Good post Zanarkand. It would be pointless and absurd. When I assumed Zidane and Vivi were, you know, that really annoyed me. I hope they leave homosexuality out of it or at the hints rather than as a plotline, and I also hope they can pull out of the fanservice tailspin they seem to be caught up in what with the new outfits for Rikku and Yuna among others. Once a series becomes focused on fanservice, it loses most of what makes it stand out, IMHO.

Well, that could be assumed, but Vash does seem to fall for any somewhat respectable woman that crosses his path (from Rem to the sheriff-what was her name?- to Elizabeth to Jessica to Meryl, and it's hinted at several times that he's been involved with women) so I'm convinced this is "cultural shonen ai," because in Japanese culture very short-term male/male or female/female "encounters" are sometimes seen as an acceptable way of cementing a strong friendship, or so I've heard. Of course, I see that particular cultural practice as repulsive and promiscuous, but your thoughts of it may vary. And as for the theory that their bond came from their common drunkenness, the same thing happened with Wolfwood later on, so maybe that does present a non-shonen-ai explanation: unless the sites that pair him with Wolfwood are working from something. However, I don't agree with those sites so. . .

I'd have to say that would be Kenshin. . .unless Cloud from FFVII counts. Hmm. I wonder who'd win the most votes if the Arena at theotaku did a match between Kenshin and Cloud. LOL!

Anime The anime characters that I like and why
MillieFan replied to Dan Rugh's topic in Otaku Central
Hmm. My favorite characters would have to be: Obviously, the one in my username and banners, Millie from Trigun. I liked that character from the beginning because she's like this total airhead and seems to have a nose for getting herself and others in trouble (like stumbling into a bandit raid or mixing up the weather report with the report on the location of Vash): yet she's also a very deep character at some points. Also, you have to love that she wasn't drawn for the fanservice. From the same series, I also like Wolfwood, because he was one of the most well-written characters I've seriously ever seen in anime or RPGs. The conflicted antihero characters forced into being "good" are usually some of the better characters anyway-and he's near the top of that character style. Oh, and I like Vash too, LOL. I don't have a why on that, I just think he's a cool character. I like Haku from Spirited Away, don't know why there either, but I do. I like the cat Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service because he was funny and always seemed to have the "right" thing to say LOL. Although I only watched a few episodes from the first volume when it was on TV here (on the International Channel) I must say that Tylor (from the Irresponsible Captain Tylor series) was a riot, LOL. That character was one of my favorites, though I gave up the series due to the horrible sub (it looked like a fansub) and when I heard the second volume was borderline hentai. I guess you can say I like the lovable idiot in most instances, and the cool, collected antihero who nevertheless does some good in the rest. LOL. -
Hmm, yes, that's one way of interpreting it, but that same activity is also a common one in a yaoi context.
-
It may be beyond bizarre and foreign. . .but I'm sure that was what they were doing there. Maybe I'm wrong: I have been before, but I'm almost certain they were engaging in a form of homosexuality. O.o is right.

NOTE: I don't want this thread to become a promotion of shonen ai/yaoi nor do I want it to be an argument. I'm only posting it because posting in another thread about some characters in FFIX reminded me of this. If anyone posts images or the discussion goes over the line, I request that this thread be closed AT ONCE. Does anyone think Frank and Vash were engaging in shonen ai in the episode "The Peacemaker?" I honestly don't *know* about this. In the first scene where it's implied, it looks like Frank's advances are definitely unwanted (i.e. Vash was begging Meryl, Millie, and all bystanders to rescue him, LOL). Nevertheless, later on, it could easily have been implied that when Vash got drunk, he lost his inhibitions toward it. Either way, the characters' "friendship" grew rather fast (even the girls or Wolfwood didn't become friends with Vash that quickly), and Frank would do anything for Vash. . .which would be kind of unusual if *all* they did was follow each other home, drink some more, and pass out. I'm not saying my theory's right, but it's kind of strange.

I'm not a yaoi fan and I personally think it's stupid. Call me closeminded as much as you want: I believe that homosexual leanings are a sorrowful affliction and that the acts are sin. Nevertheless, I consider the implied relationships and "hints" at that sort of thing, and you're all missing a really big one. The Honey Bee Inn in FFVII was one that was really there. I'm not sure about CloudxZack/Sephiroth-that sounds like the Gundam Wing rumors. Just because a male character isn't interested in women doesn't necessarily mean he's interested in men either. . . What I'm talking about was in FFIX. First time in Madain Sari, the night scene, Zidane and Vivi. They were offscreen, but the text boxes implied some serious shonen ai going on between them. O.o
Originally posted by PiccoloNamek Yes, I have seen it all. So post away. ;) Hmm, speaking of plants... I never really paid much attention to this, but are Vash and Knives complete plants that have simply been manipulated to resemble humans, or are they plant/human constructs? You'd think it'd be kind of hard to manipulate a plant's DNA to the point of giving it a brain and nervous system, (As well as all of the other senses that come with those) but, I don't know for sure. Gee, I hope I don't sound too "New".
No, you don't sound too new. LOL! I think they're plant-human constructs, sort of like "the best of both worlds," and I think, but am not exactly certain, that Vash is more "human" than Knives is. That would explain his interest in women (which Knives doesn't seem to have), his love for food and drink (which Knives also seemed not to have), and why Legato could somewhat manipulate him while he couldn't manipulate Knives at all.
-
Yeah, she does die in that episode, but the theory still stands somewhat, since that episode was set like after 10 years on the Flying Ship.
-
Hmm. Have you ever thought that maybe Legato had some plant DNA himself, but was a "failed experiment," kind of like Sephiroth in FFVII? That would explain why he was the only other character than Vash and Knives who had the ability to use the gun arm and was equipped with one, why he had somewhat of a long lifespan compared to the other "human" characters, why he was able to use the other powers, and why he thought humans to be an "inferior species." And yet, since he was weaker than Knives, he couldn't manipulate him.

Wow, you're a published writer? That's really cool, although I'm feeling quite cynical and anyone can say anything on the Internet, so could you post some proof before I congratulate you further? Hehe, thanks -^.^-

Yeah, but almost all the religious content is really "strange," lol. One minute it hints at Christianity, another at Buddhism, another at Shinto, and so on. (BTW while Wolfwood is a "priest," and has some trappings of "Christianity," he's not *meant* to be depicted as an expressly "Christian" character. I'm sure you all know that, but I just wanted to throw that in for anyone who sees that as a correct depiction of Christianity. If you do, you have a lot to learn about us hehehe. . .~.^) It's IMHO just thrown together into a completely clashing mixture which doesn't take much away from the series and is actually quite interesting in its setting. Most of that due to its being a very creative way of establishing the conflict in Wolfwood's personality between being "good" and being "evil." Nevertheless, I just wanted to post a general warning to anyone who thinks it's a clear representation of any faith: it's not. By the way: I want to apologize to anyone I've offended by demeaning Japanese culture. As a Christian, I try to keep balanced in my outreach to others (by not demeaning their beliefs) and yet maintaining the purity and realities of the Christian faith in contrast to what some people think it is. Sometimes I sway a little too far over on either side, and I'm sorry about that.

Considering the threads in Anime Lounge. . .
MillieFan replied to MillieFan's topic in Help & Feedback
Blah, yeah. . .I'd agree. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all. ::sigh:: -
They are. Trust me, hehehehe. I've researched it for a while, and the thing is, most people there are like a strange admixture of Buddhist, Shinto, atheist, and agnostic. Nevertheless, they believe that they can incorporate all symbolism into anything. Like "Christmas" (which in Japan is a sort of Valentine's Day-totally sickening since Christianity sees Christmas as the day our hope of salvation was born into the world-not the day to celebrate by sinning all the more with an insignificant other)

Anime When should you stop watching anime?
MillieFan replied to AnimeAddict's topic in Otaku Central
LOL, who really knows. I've met some of us who are in their 50s and 60s, and one time I even saw a pic of some cosplayers who were definitely close to forty or older. LOL, I think I'll stop only if I've watched it all and there's nothing else to see or if all new anime becomes mindless, plotless hentai-in which case I'd only stop watching the new all-H stuff and I should by that time have all the best normal anime in my DVD collection, LOL. Yeah. . .that is kind of an odd sight, and I can just imagine myself now if I'm 80 years old. . . "You think that's anime? Back in my day. . ." hehehehehe. -
Newbie? Don't you realize how offensive your name is? It's a racial insult. Please apply for a name change soonest. Thank you. -^.^-

I have to agree with QA: tragedy is often a quite interesting part of the story in any anime. Nevertheless, I somewhat agree with the poster who complained. While it was well-written and possibly good for the current series,
killing off Wolfwood
made making the second manga series into an anime series almost impossible unless the chronology is worked around or a new character is introduced, because
Wolfwood was one of the main characters in it, from what I've heard.
While it was a good writing decision for immediately advancing the plot, it was a miserable decision for any future series.

Well, I'm personally opposed to that kind of lifestyle. Not that I could live it because it would be a wrong thing for me to do, but even if I had the choice and it wasn't "wrong" like it is, I wouldn't because I don't want to fry my brain on dope and booze like my cousin did, and I don't want to die an early death from AIDS.
-
Why don't you all open up a separate Trigun forum under Otaku Anime? I mean, there's definitely enough interest, more so than in the existing Gundam forum, and I think it would be a good idea. (nominates herself as the mod ~.^ just kidding! LOL, I'm already busy enough at other boards.)
-
I think you're onto something with the theory that Meryl and Millie are Rem's fifth-generation descendants, not reincarnations. Both have some direct characteristics of her, but not others, and often, not in the same person. Like Meryl has her intelligence and practicality, and Millie has her compassion and idealism. Who knows, maybe if there ever is a sequel to the anime, this might be expanded on. . .
-
LOL, I've felt out of place almost my entire life. I'm the youngest in my immediate family (12 years younger than my only sister). I'm the only anime fan in my immediate family. I'm not like the other women in my family in that I can't cook well and that I hate sewing. I'm not as intelligent as everyone else I know.
Originally posted by Lady Macaiodh Harry, I am so far beyond sick of you. I can't believe you are saying this stuff. I understand that you like to create "controversy" to get "attention" but at some point there is a line you don't cross. You obviously have no compassion for others, and it is the people without compassion that make the world the sick place it is. It's people like you who carried out the events on the tape. So, congratulations, your more of a conformist than you thought. You should be ashamed of yourself. I'd say more, but I don't want to violate the rules of the boards.
I want to express my agreement with this post. If anyone thinks that the victims "brought it on themselves" or "deserved it," that person *cough cough Harry* is sick beyond belief. How can anyone's mind operate like that? Eek. I don't want to be accused of flaming so I'll stop here. :worried:

I've seen a lot. As a Christian, I really don't see it as offensive as much as I see it as "blah, these writers didn't bother to do their homework to even learn what they're saying." I mean, so much of it is so mangled that it really represents no actual religion beyond illustrating what a syncretic society Japan is religiously. IMHO, I don't care really. I know what I believe, and I'm not going to trade it in for something else.

Anime Yaoi/shonen-ai: what's the attraction?
MillieFan replied to Utena_Tenjou's topic in Otaku Central
Hehehe, sorry for the mistake: It looked really like her from that episode early on in Trigun (I think it was either "Lost July" or "B.D.N.") where all the characters but the ever-sensible Meryl were totally bombed at the city's celebration. Not one of my favorite scenes, and something I probably shouldn't have laughed at like I did what with my beliefs, nevertheless. . .
