OK, now that I've watched all the anime I bought a while back, I'm going through another famous anime franchise -- [b]Patlabor[/b]! Starting with the original 7-episode OVA. It's not mind-blowingly amazing so far, but it is a lot of fun. The basic concept involves a section of the police that use giant robots in the line of duty, but they're always shafted on budget and bored out of their skulls because there is barely anything to serve and protect. So it's like half crime thriller (when things of that sort happen) and half sitcom. Sounds like a weird combo, but it works. Third episode is my favorite so far: It takes a ridiculous scenario (mad scientist), plays it completely straight at first and then makes it progressively more ridiculous as the episode goes on. It's hilarious.

Personally, I am not a fan. Spends too much of its time on inane bullshit and not enough time weaving those philosophical themes into the narrative in a way that is both coherent and strengthens the story. It's all philosophical masturbation to me.

Just little things like that, nothing major that changes the overall story or anything. There are three directors cut episodes in the set, but I haven't watched those yet, so I don't know how different they are from the actual episodes. The holiday edition set is basically ADV pulling a Gainax and cashing in on the show as much as possible. It's available on Right Stuf for fairly cheap -- $34.99, as opposed to the thinkpak edition of the Platinum set, which is almost twice that.

I have the Holiday Edition set, which is basically a repackaging of the platinum DVDs. They have little bits added to each episode, I think; I [i]did[/i] notice a few differences in the episodes I watched, though they weren't huge differences.

I started my rewatch of [b]Evangelion[/b] recently. Nothing much to report since I'm only through the first three episodes and I've seen those (and iterations of them) a crapload of times, but this [i]is[/i] the first time I am seeing the TV series in DVD quality, and, uh, it really makes the animation shortcuts Gainax took more prominent!

10 minutes into recording the podcast and I already have an answer for Magus's question.

So, [b]GaoGaiGar[/b] is what it is -- lots of fun, and the series does get really good in the second half, but my god the repetition. I couldn't watch more than a few episodes per day because of it. But I'm watching [b]GaoGaiGar Final[/b] right now, and it's AWESOME. Everything that is great about [b]GaoGaiGar[/b], but without any of the crap and with decent animation. Love this. Also watched [b]I My Me! Strawberry Eggs[/b]. Was pretty frustrating since there was some actual clever gender satire in there, but all the stories are resolved in the easiest, most asinine ways, and there's so much anime comedy bullshit that I've long grown tired of. Still better than a fair number of shows, but I'm kind of pissed at it for actually raising my expectations and then pulling the rug out from under me.

Good god, that ending bit (before Beth and Kei's theme song) is creepy as hell! I also like that Korey's impression of me is deeper and manlier than how I actually sound. Damn you. Pretty good episode! I can't listen to myself, so I'll assume that you guys expertly edited my blatherings. Having Kei and Beth on the show was a lot of fun; really made everything go by even quicker than it usually does. Hopefully it opens the floodgates and makes people be a bit less hesitant to appear on the show. Boo and Korey don't bite!

I'm loving the Rebuild flicks so far. Definitely need to buy the first; I'll probably snap it up once 2.0 comes out in the States. The movies have me eager to rewatch the series, too -- I actually bought the series for the first time a month back specifically for that purpose, although I'm not sure when I'll get to that. It's been years since I watched the show, though, so I'm sure a lot of it will be fresh to me too. Hell, I'll probably rewatch End of Evangelion as well. I saw it only once and barely remember anything aside from all the freaky imagery and Shinji pulling a Bill Clinton on Asuka. From what I recall, 1.0 is mainly cosmetic changes, aside from the very end. It looks great though. 2.0 is almost all different. There are basic scenarios that remain, but the characters are switched around, and of course the development of the primary characters is different too. Mari also throws a wrench into things, although she is still fairly mysterious by the end of the movie. As far as I can remember, Kaworu doesn't appear until near the end of the TV series ... there aren't even hints of his appearance before he arrives like there are in the Rebuild movies.

I'm 22 episodes into it right now, and "Saturday morning cartoon show for kids" is right on the money. It's one giant throwback to old super robot shows -- simple characters and story, WORK THROUGH EVERYTHING WITH GUTS AND PASSION, monster of the week storylines, etc. It's fun because it's so weird and crazy, but I wouldn't say it's a must-buy or anything so far.
