The Obligatory "Haul" Thread
Shinmaru replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in General Discussion
Here's my list: - Hotel Dusk: Room 215 for the Nintendo DS - Kafka On the Shore and Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (I've already read the latter, but it's nice to be able to re-read it whenever I want) - How I Met Your Mother Season 2 DVD set - A nice looking polo shirt Also got a kickass blue long sleeve shirt, a nice brown jacket, and some slippers yesterday during Christmas Eve. My brother also received Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney today, so I'll be playing that when he finishes the game. :) Lastly, during my family's annual Christmas movie trip, my siblings and I saw Sweeney Todd (which is pretty good; more people should see it), while my parents saw National Treasure 2. All in all, a fun Christmas. *goes back to playing Hotel Dusk* -
Manga Naruto Manga [Warning: Spoilers]
Shinmaru replied to Ryo the Tactician's topic in Otaku Central
Jiraiya: Goes out like a badass. Pein: Keeps going as a douchebag. All that I really need to say about that fight. The Sasuke/Itachi fight will be fun if only for all the godmodding you know we'll see. Plus it'll be good to see Itachi (hopefully) actually pushed somewhat in a fight for once. Like Tombstone, I'm also interested in the BIG UCHIHA SECRET~ as well. -
Yeah, the loading is terrible in Chrono Trigger, and the game slows down a lot, as well. For me, the worst is when you're fighting
Queen Zeal
and the battle is like five times longer than it should be, because the slowdown drags everything to a crawl. It's much better in Final Fantasy IV, but then again, it takes 5,000 years to save in that game, so I guess there's a trade off. There are the same problems in Final Fantasy Anthology, too, unfortunately. :(

Argh, still waiting on episode 12. I did catch up to the other episodes, however. Episode 10 was great with Nozomu's incredibly warped ideas of the minimum standards of culture. To be fair to him, though, that was one cultured potato. Episode 11 was interesting with Chiri going batshit insane lol.
Is it safe to assume she stabbed Nozomu? That seemed to be what was implied, but I'm not 100% sure lol.
Nozomu's obsession with hibernating was funny, as well. I wish I could hibernate. :(

Is that the second seal of approval you've made for me, Des? Haha. [/obscenly late reply] Finally caught up to Shugo Chara yesterday. It's really fun when all the Charas band together and interact lol. I enjoyed watching them hunt for the embryo with Tadase's arrogant Chara taking the lead. Another hilarious moment with Tadase's Chara was in episode 10 when he was trying on the Santa costume and Tadase and Kukai busted him and laughed their ***** off. The costume did look nice on him, though. :p Anyway, yeah, still enjoying this show immensely. Even though most of the episodes have their formula (someone gets moody ---> X Egg is released ---> Amu transforms and beats the crap out of it, saving the day), they also offer something that's fun and interesting.

Actually, I watched Fellowship of the Ring again maybe half a year ago (along with the other Lord of the Rings movies), and I actually liked it much more than expected lol. The fact that the movie is so long prevented me from buying the Rifftrax for it, but if it's as good as you say, then I'm buying it today. Most of the other Rifftrax I've held off on buying because I don't have the accompanying movies. (I have The Bourne Identity, but I didn't get that because I wasn't sure the crew could get anything too funny from the movie. Judging from the preview, I was right.) Eh, about The Matrix, I guess I just wasn't feeling it. Harry Potter was just so hysterically funny that anything else probably would have been a disappointment. I'll definitely give it a rewatch and see how it holds up. And yeah, I agree that there are a ton of great lines you end up missing the first time through. I watched Harry Potter again the other day, and there was some hilarious lines I missed the first time through (the funniest being Snape's "Shut up and kiss me" to Quirrell in the darkened hallway, haha).

I can't believe I didn't see this topic before. Anyway, I recently bought a bunch of Rifftrax and had a blast listening to them, although a couple were slightly disappointing. Here's a quick ranking, from best to worst: - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - Independence Day - Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - Spider-Man - The Matrix - Raiders of the Lost Ark The top four are all fantastic riffing experiences that would fit in well with any episode of MST3K. Mike and Kevin riffing on the ridiculous ethnic stereotypes in the Phantom Menace is incredible, as is "Rommel, you magnificent son of a *****, I read your book." Harry Potter is almost as good. As always, the Rifftrax crew are at their best when a) Someone has died or b) When they have a bunch of dorks and losers to destroy. The latter is full force in Harry Potter, haha. Moving on, Attack of the Clones is fine, but it's not as good as I hoped it would be, considering the dubious quality of the movie. Chad Vader is also a horrible guest riffer - he barely says anything, and when he does speak, it's not at all funny. Spider-Man and The Matrix are also disappointing because while there's some funny stuff (the Bonesaw scenes in Spider-Man are great in particular), there was definitely the potential for more there. Raiders of the Lost Ark is the most disappointing of all, though, because it's not that good. There are some funny lines ("It's a Jew!" when one of the Nazis pulls out a gun being my favorite), but they're few and far between, which sucks because Mike, Kevin, and Bill are all here for that one. Oh well. Still, my experience with Rifftrax so far has been far more positive than negative. It's fantastic seeing the boys back together. What Rifftrax have you listened to, John? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to check out Cinematic Titanic...

School is okay for me. I almost royally ****** up in one of my classes, because I got the schedule for finals week all mixed up in my head and ended up missing one of my final exams. However, through the means of a Christmas miracle (code for copious, humiliating begging), my professor was kind enough to let me take the test before the week ended. I got a B+ in the class, which was sort of disappointing considering I was well on my way to an A, but I'm lucky to have a grade at all, so I'm not too annoyed about that lol. My other classes weren't bad. The highlight of my quarter was writing a 15-page research paper in my Communication Research class about interpersonal relationships in Dexter.

Thanks for finding that. The only other trailers I've seen have been of God awful quality. I'm hoping the strike doesn't affect Lost too much, but at this point it doesn't appear as though there's much reason to think it won't. This show just can't catch a break when it comes to scheduling.

Clurr: How'd you like Cat's Cradle? I read it about a month-and-a-half ago, and I thought it was pretty good. Wasn't as interested in the overall story as I'd liked to have been, but there was some hilarious stuff and some interesting ideas (ice-nine, Bokononism, etc.). If you liked this and haven't read Slaughterhouse-Five, then you should get on that right away. Ken: Yeah, I'd agree that Lovecraft is hit and miss. Some of his stories can get a bit boring, but when he hits, he really fucking hits. "The Rats in the Walls," "The Colour Out of Space," and "Call of Cthuhlu" were the favorites of what I read. I also kind of liked "In the Vault" and "Pickman's Model." I don't think I got the chance to finish the collection I read, though... I should request it again from the library.

So, in a desperate attempt to remember every book I've read in my life (which isn't going so well, sadly), I stumbled upon Good Reads, which helps people document the books they've read, compile favorite quotes, look at what their friends are reading, and so on (if anyone here has the iRead application on Facebook, then you'll see it's pretty much the same thing). Hopefully if any of you wants to remember every book you've read, you'll do better than I have so far (I'd say at least half of my list is made up of manga, Goosebumps, and Dr. Seuss - clearly I am an intellectual reader). Anyone else here a member of the site? Here's my profile. Just so this doesn't degenerate into a thread of link-posing and friend-making (not that there's anything wrong with that), we can also discuss whatever new books we're reading, any books that interest us from another person's profile, and any nostalgia trips that come as a result of seeing a long lost book on someone else's page. Anyway, to get the ball rolling a bit, I'm reading No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy. The Coen Brothers' movie adaptation looks great, but I can't see it yet, so I opted to read the novel instead. I'm liking it just fine so far. McCarthy's style is a bit weird at first. It didn't take me long to get used to it, however, and I'm pretty sure I'm at the point in the novel where the story is really going to pick up, so I'm excited about that. Just as a brief synopsis: The novel is about a man named Moss who finds a drug deal gone wrong in southwest Texas and takes a briefcase from the scene which contains $2.4 million. The other stories in the book include Sheriff Bell, who is trying to solve the crime and protect Moss, and Anton Chigurh, a violent criminal who is hired to get the money back. Not the best synopsis in the world, but I'm not too far into it at this point, so whatever. I want to read about what everyone else is reading. :p

Manga Naruto Manga [Warning: Spoilers]
Shinmaru replied to Ryo the Tactician's topic in Otaku Central
Yeah, same here. I'm bracing myself for something utterly bonkers that will threaten to snap my brain in half. Also, it was nice of Kishimoto to give us two brief glimpses into other stories before being like, "sorry nothing else lol" this week. -
Ha. Here's another good one: http://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=2318516

I think you have intense debate-sensing powers. Whenever someone argues against something you posted (or makes a counterargument to your counterargument), you feel it deep inside and immediately launch into Refute Mode.

Yeah, I thought about it for while, and I like the final case in Trials and Tribulations more than the final case in Justice for All, as well. JfA's final case was a great conclusion to the game; TaT's final case was a great conclusion to the trilogy. It just wraps up so many things in such a satisfying way. So awesome. As I mentioned before, there are so many great moments that come one after another.
Phoenix drinking the coffee at the end is a good one (the fact that he had his "I FOUND A CONTRADICTION" face on while he was drinking it had me laughing for a good few minutes). Also, right when Elise Deauxnim showed up, I was immediately like, "...Misty Fey?? Could it be????" So great, haha. I also liked the build-up to Godot's involvement in the fifth case. Once you realize Godot is Diego Armando and remember that he was the lawyer killed by Dahlia Hawthorne, there's that tugging in the back of your mind about how that will play out in the final case. The moment where Phoenix accuses Godot of engineering the whole thing is so amazing.
More people must play this!!
-
I finished the game a few days ago, and it lived up to my expectations and then some, especially the final case, which is one "OMG AWESOME" moment after another. From
playing as Edgeworth~!
to
the ****ing hysterical Canadian judge (who is the brother of the series' main judge - who is also Canadian now, I guess??)
and
Godot's plan of vengeance against Dahlia Hawthorne
... what a ride, is all I can say. I also agree with Charles that generally the evidence presented is more logically determined than random "WTF does this have to do with it??" evidence that pops up more often than you'd like in the second game (though there is still some of that in the game). Even when some of the evidence seems that way at first, after the explanation given it fits in logically. It's more satisfying than randomly trying out evidence and hoping to God it works, haha. Now I just need to find the first Phoenix Wright game and finally play that... :(
To Former Staff Members: Would you return to your post?
No. I would be so damn bored moderating again. I'm fine with just coming here and making a post every once in a while.

I wore it my freshman year in college (2004). ... Jesus, where the hell is that "things that make you feel old" thread now...
Lunox's ghetto pirate costume, put together in ten minutes: -1 flamboyant scarf tied around head -1 pink ribbon for side-ways ponytail -1 paint-splatter-styled oversized button-up -1 green waist belt -1 bohemian hip tie -1 blue short-short -1 pair of red heels -1 foam pirate sword - too much mascara & eyeliner = best costume ever. Pictures? Possibly.
Someone's following in my footsteps!! :o I didn't dress up, unfortunately, because I was way too busy with random crap. I thought about dressing as Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia (my high school graduation gown along with a paper with, "Arr!! Don't kill babies!! Overturn Roe v. Wade!!" written on it), but I figured there was no real point to it since I mostly sat at my cubicle all day. :/

WTF, people still do that color changing ********?? I thought that died in the 90s when it should have. Regardless, that's still a pretty kickass figure. That Haruhi isn't half bad either.

I ordered the new Phoenix Wright off Amazon, but it's not going to arrive here until mid-November because I'm cheap and don't want to pay shipping. It'll be well worth the wait, though, I'm sure. :) I really want to see if any of the new cases approach the amazing final case in the second Phoenix Wright, though. Any word on whether one (or more!! :O) of the cases are that good, Charles?

Another good episode. I thought Light's VA was better this week, although there are still moments when he's a bit over the top (mostly when he does the annoying trembling laugh while talking bullcrap). However, I think he did a nice job of sounding like a sniveling punk while Light was watching Lind L. Tailor on the TV. L's voice is solid right now. It's calm and even, but there's still a bit of amusement in there where you can tell he's clearly enjoyed going one up on Kira. The real test will come when L finally shows himself and more of his personality shows through, though. Light's dad is a bit weird to me. Nothing particularly wrong with the voice, but I just always imagined it sounding different. Oh well. EDIT: Also, it's uber fun to remember how badass L is (despite some eerie similarities to Light...). Tricking Light into killing Lind L. Tailor (and Light's subsequent hissy fit) will never get old.

My favorite is the classic "You solved a puzzle!" jingle from The Legend of Zelda series. I wish that played every time I got a question right on a test.

Sorry I bailed after like an hour and a half. My computer = ultimate fail. :( If you want to do more in the future, though, Haruhi would be a lot of fun, as would Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei once that's finished being subbed (in about ten years XD).
