1.
(too approachable, too little storm and stress, no looming sense of "importance" - basically, not European enough).
Haha, +1 to you, my friend. Anyway, I watched this a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm a total sucker for time travel stories, whether it's a Heinlein logical mindbender or something more lighthearted and emotional like this. I think one of my favorite aspects of time travel stories is seeing what certain characters do when given the ability to travel through time, and those scenes did not disappoint here, haha. The way Makoto just throws herself through time and rolls around everywhere like a little ball of energy is really adorable. And, come on, who wouldn't use time travel to ace a few tests? :) I also liked how the story emphasized the responsibility Makoto had to take for her actions. If you could just jump through time whenever something didn't go your way, then life would be way too easy lol. Making choices and dealing with those choices is a big part of life; running away from the decisions you've made and their consequences completely defeats the purpose of choice. By avoiding taking responsibility for her choices, Makoto just ended up hurting herself and the people around her. Aside from that fun stuff, though, the movie's also well worth watching for the karaoke scene, haha. I had a good laugh watching Makoto roll into that cramped room over and over again, jumping up and shouting into the microphone, with Chiaki and Kousuke watching her, utterly bewildered. lol
  2. Yay, I can use the Internet again! I liked it a lot - probably moreso because I went back and read OotP and HBP and found that I enjoyed those two much more than the first time I read them. You know, I found Deathly Hallows to have much more actiony than any other book in the series... I don't know whether that's because it actually does have more action or
because Harry, Ron and Hermione travel so much
, but the book really started moving like crazy once
the Death Eaters invaded Bill and Fleur's wedding.
Anyway, some parts I really loved... - NEVILLE NEVILLE NEVILLE
Neville was so awesome. SO freaking proud of my boy for taking charge at Hogwarts, smarting off to Carrow, standing up to Voldemort, and cutting off Nagini's head. Neville = total badass.
-
Snape's memories. There's really nothing more I can add that hasn't already been said elsewhere. Incredibly powerful and emotional send off for Snape.
-
Mrs. Weasley going utterly batshit on Bellatrix Lestrange. lol @ Bella. Kind of weird how many members of the Order of the Phoenix were using Unforgivable Curses, though, haha.
-
Harry morphing into Dumbledore during his fight with Voldemort and taunting ol' Voldy. So perfect for Harry to call him "Riddle."
-
Harry's death/resurrection and his talk with Dumbledore. Pretty shocking to learn all that terrible stuff about Dumbledore throughout the book, but I guess it shows even the greatest people have their flaws.
-
Kreacher leading the house elves during the final battle. Redemption everywhere, yay!
-
Crabbe randomly becoming intelligent and usurping Malfoy, if only because I think it's funny to imagine that he's been waiting seven years to do that.
That's enough good stuff for now; I'll let other people have their fanboy/fangirl moments. :p Just a couple of things I was iffy on, though... -
Fred's death, if only because I love the Weasley twins so very much (I would say they're actually my favorite characters in the entire series), and getting hit by a blown-up wall is a lame way to go out. It seemed like he died just for the shock value of it, frankly, and it seemed a bit unnecessary to me.
-
The disappointing lack of redemption for Malfoy. Yeah, he was really disturbed by what Voldemort was doing, he tried to avoid IDing Harry and his friends, and he tried to keep Crabbe and Goyle from killing Harry (maybe using Voldemort's wishes to mask his own desire to keep Harry alive), but I don't think any one thing totally redeemed Draco. Oh well, at least everyone can imagine him with a receding hairline, haha.
3. Right now, I would say I am at an 8. I'm nearly fully recovered from being miserably ill all weekend, I'm reading Dan Simmons' Hyperion and enjoying the hell out of it, I'm going to read Lolita afterwards (which I know I'll love after having read the first 25 pages or so), and I'll be going to Disneyland next week with some friends for the first time in God knows how long. Life is good.
  4. My favorite books were all the books in Louis Sachar's Wayside School series... I'd say I must've read each book in the series at least 20-25 times each. Hell, I even read the Sideways Arithmetic books multiple times, and I hated math! I'd spend a lot of time reading them and daydreaming about going to Wayside School instead of my boring ass elementary school. None of our buildings were more than one story. :( I was also obsessed with the Encyclopedia Brown books and the Clue books. Mystery-solving was (and is) fun.
  5. Did Haruhi become a male without me knowing it? :p Anyway, I say... 1. Naruto 2. Inuyasha 3. Rurouni Kenshin 4. Chrono Crusade 5. Yu-Gi-Oh! 6. Ichigo 100%
  6. Yay, second season! Anyway, watching the series again since getting the first two Haruhi DVDs got me in the mood to see the other episodes. One random reference from Remote Island Syndrome Part II that went completely over my head before (due to not having played the game referenced until today) is when Haruhi totally turns into
Phoenix Wright when she puts the final stamp on the mystery. Smacking her hands on the table, the blue background, THE ACCUSATORY FINGER POINT~!, and all the crazy Phoenix Wright-style camera angles were so ****ing awesome.
God, that had me absolutely rolling. EDIT:
It is also awesome that Haruhi says there can only be one solution to the case.
EDIT 2:
Hahaha, apparently Itsuki does an Edgeworth impression, as well, which makes it even more awesome.
7. The Haruhi boxsets are loverly. I bought them both at AX, and even though I normally would not spend so much money on two DVDs, all of the extra stuff won me over. Especially Vol. 1's amazing box.
  8.
Holy ****, is it that time of year again already?
Haha, it snuck up on me, too, actually. Time has been going by way too quickly for way too long. :( Anyway, here are some pictures of me from my trip to AX yesterday. I was on the fence about cosplaying, but I decided to go for it though my costume was hardly outrageous. For anyone who cares, I went as Aizawa from Death Note. I'd say a grand total of zero people recognized me. Oh, the plight of the secondary character who has no distinct attire. :animecry: I'll have more pictures to post within the next few days once my friends send me the pictures they took.
  9. I can never resist these threads. A terribly, wondrously exciting photo of my photography professor and me at a celebratory banquet for Cal Poly's student newspaper, The Poly Post. That's the most recent photo I have of myself... at least until Sunday when I go to the Anime Expo and pose shamelessly with cosplayers to the delight and/or horror of all my adoring fans.
  10. You know, until I read the idea on another message board earlier today, I hadn't considered the thought that
Near wrote Mikami's suicide into the Death Note. It is something to think about, and I definitely think Near killed Mikami in the manga, otherwise there would be no real point in bringing up the possibility... in the anime, I guess I could go either way. As I wrote earlier, I could definitely see why Mikami would choose to kill himself, but his death is also so abrupt and violent that it's more than a bit suspicious.
11.
Speaking of dignity. I've already seen people complain that the changes [spoiler']make Light seem less pathetic. While I guess this is true if you compare episode 37 to the episode 37 that might've been if they followed the manga 100%, I don't think it's true at all if you compare the experiences of reading the manga & watching the anime. The voice acting alone makes the pathetic factor stand out in sharp relief, so I don't think anything was really lost in comparison to the manga. I certainly don't think they glossed over Light's downfall or anything. Just listen to Miyano go at it.

Yeah, thinking about it right now, it seems to me that the manga and the anime
represent the pathetic nature of Light's downfall in different ways, with the manga emphasizing the inhumanity Light gained and the anime emphasizing the humanity Light lost. In the manga, the only shred of humanity Light seems to have left is the instinctual ability to fight against one's demise, and that isn't even exclusive to humans lol. Everything else left him - his logic, his empathy (though that disappeared a hell of a long time before the final chapter, haha), and everything else save his intense desire to somehow stay alive. Personally, I think Light's inhumanity was emphasized to get the type of reaction you described, Dagger - I know that's certainly how I felt when Light's eyes grayed out in Chapter 107's final panel. With the anime, the stuff added to it shows how much Light lost and really seems to confirm what Light's father said about the power to kill being the real evil. In the end, Light was left without the evil tool that had consumed him from the start, and without it he was like a lost child desperately trying to find a way out of the mess he got himself into. In the end, though, there was no way for him to avoid it, and then he did the most human thing he could have - he accepted his fate and died a quiet whimper of a death. In many ways, I think the anime Light is a more pathetic, tragic figure than the manga Light because his last shred of humanity was wasted on the end result of the wasteful life he'd led for the past few years, whereas manga Light had been long gone by the time he died.
12. I think it's safe to say I'm addicted to any sort of sour cream and onion potato chip. A couple of weeks ago I scarfed down a whole thing of Pringles sour cream and onion chips in the space of a half hour or so, and I didn't hear the end of it from my siblings, especially after I confided in my sister that I really missed those chips about an hour or so after I ate them. Last time I look to her for sympathy! :( Also, I worked as a dishwasher at a hospital restaurant a few years back, and they had the most delicious hash browns I ever tasted. I swear to God, whenever they had any leftovers whatsoever, I always cleaned them out. I really, really, really wish I had some of those right now... *cue taunting* Oh, and garlic bread. I would eat that 24/7 if I could. Alan will back me up on that. EDIT: Cherry Starbursts, too.
  13. I couldn't wait until translations came out, so I just watched the raw right now since I have at least a decent idea of what everyone is talking about due to having read the manga. Now to discuss!
It did what the manga never could:
made me feel for Light at the end, made me sense on an emotional rather than logical level the sheer farcical waste[/i'] of it all.

I agree. The biggest emotional punch for me is
Light's face when he dies. In the manga, his expression strikes me as one of total fear/desperation, as in, "Oh ****, I'm actually going to die," whereas in the anime Light has an utterly sad look upon his face. It's as though he's realizing what you wrote about at the beginning of your post - that everything he did was a mind-boggling waste. He killed or helped kill an astonishing amount of criminals and innocents, and the only thing those deaths led to is Light dying quietly in a real dump of warehouse, broken and alone, everything he'd worked for ripped away from him by the inevitably awful end that comes to all human Death Note users. Amazingly enough, I actually felt sort of sorry for the little bastard; I still think he more than deserved everything he got in the end, but it's really sad when you think about what Light could have been. The quick flashbacks to the beginning of the series work well to show Light as he was before the Death Note secured its cold grip on him - he was a normal high school kid like any other, and he could've gone on to have a pretty fantastic career with the Japanese police alongside his father. It's a shame, but Light chose to use the Death Note as an instrument of death (no matter how "good" his intentions), so he alone had to deal with the despair that would be wrought upon him because of his abuses.
The whole deal with
Mikami worked better in the anime, too, I think. I always thought the throwaway mention of Mikami dying in prison (by Near's pen if Matsuda's theory is to be believed) was a bit anti-climactic for him; the pained look on Mikami's face and his subsequent suicide (try saying that five times quickly) in the anime make for a more fitting end for him and really help drive home the futility of what Light was doing. To Mikami, that whole deal in the warehouse is like the most humiliating slap in the face he could've received - it's his first time seeing Light in person, his god and divine justice, and he's owned completely and thoroughly by a little white-haired kid who plays with finger puppets. I think Mikami felt completely betrayed by the vision of Light he'd formed in his mind, and before he killed himself, Mikami realized the justice he'd been striving for his entire life and that he thought he'd found in Light was an absolute ruse. Mikami kind of got what he deserved, too, though, the nut. His suicide was shockingly violent, however, haha. Unless I'm forgetting something, that's pretty much the most violent scene in the entire anime, correct? That's the argument for using brutal violence as sparingly as possible - when it is used, then a violent scene will hit as hard as it actually should.
That's enough for now. I'll probably come back in here after I can actually understand what everyone is saying. :p
  14.
EDIT: While we're on the subject of Kuja... you know who the worst villain is? Necron.
Oh God, that was so terrible.
"i think i'll pop up and fight u with no build just cuz lol btw if u lose i MDK the universe"
I've seen Final Fantasy IX get an unfair rap in certain places, but even though I like it a lot, I have to admit the final boss is awful. Of the villains mentioned so far, I agree with Ganondorf (from OoT on, though he's really fun to fight in LttP), Lynx, Magus, and Revolver Ocelot (though I prefer the older version from MGS 1 and 2). Actually, pretty much every villain in MGS is great except
Decoy Octopus - sucks to be the dead one, loser.
Bowser is sort of up there, too, but I like him best in the Mario RPGs when he's either a protagonist (Super Mario RPG, Super Paper Mario) or a limited antagonist (Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door). As for new additions to the list... how about the entire cast of Punch Out!!? I've never seen a more wonderful bunch of stereotypes in my life.
  15. Frankly, the easiest way is to sleep your way to the top. Everything else takes care of itself after that.
  16. Every time I've tried to keep a written journal, I've abandoned it after about five days. Electronic journals are so much easier to keep up with, because I type much faster than I write and there's far less cramping.
  17.
Don't decide on a major yet, or at least keep more than one possibility in mind.
Yes. If you're completely unsure about what you want your major to be, don't feel pressured to choose one and stick with it completely. You're going to have general education classes out the *** no matter what you're majoring in, so you'll have plenty of time to find something that fits. Also, if you find yourself completely despising your major, whether you're only a few classes in or halfway through the curriculum or whatever, don't be afraid to switch to something else. Better to take a while to find what's right than to quickly find something that will drive you insane. Another thing - don't feel restricted by what jobs you think certain degrees will get you once you finish school. I'm not an English student, but I think this is a good enough example: Lots of people (including me when I graduated from high school) think the only thing you can do with an English degree is become a teacher or a writer. However, lots of employers from varying industries hire English majors for their analytical skills and ability to communicate well (ugh, I'm totally sounding like my school's English Department Web site here...). As another example, I have a friend who majored in history but got a job in NBC's sports department because they knew she could do hard research for them. Certain majors lead you down a relatively straight path, while others open up many non-specific opportunities. One last thing... if you're considering becoming a music student, I assume you're already planning to do this as part of the school band or something similar, but find something to participate in at school. For the first couple of years of school, I just attended class and then went home, and I can't begin to tell you how freaking dull it was. This year I manned up and started writing for the school newspaper a bit earlier than I had to, and I'm kicking myself for being such an idiot the last couple of years because I've enjoyed it so much. People who have fond memories of college are the ones who actually did something there besides get grades. Join a club, an activity involved with your major, or whatever else strikes your fancy. College is incredibly boring otherwise lol. EDIT: Haha, I didn't even answer the questions you posted. Maybe later when I am without headache.
  18. CTU headquarters loomed large in the distance, a towering monolith representing all that was right with the world. Namely, intelligent Internet posts, anti-Communism, and leadership roles for minority gorillas. This was where it all went down; hundreds of agents were in there, scrambling to and fro like pillbugs in a flaming shoebox, doing their best to counteract dangerous, scummy terrorist activity. Only these bugs didn't exist, at least as far as the trusting citizens of America were concerned. Vague government agencies pouring boatloads of taxpayer money into officially non-existent military agencies for the sole purpose of blotting out retards on Japanese animation-related message boards. God, I love it so, almost as much as I love saluting the flag before my boy's Little League games. A fresh, cool wave of air flowed across my face as I walked into HQ. As I understood it, we were already pretty deep into the war, which didn't surprise me in the least. They never called on me until the saps at the front lines were all wasted away and they had nobody else to do their dirty work. The Mitch-slappings alone claimed a few good drinking pals of mine. The poor bastards. I'd make certain those terrorist SOBs got what was coming to them - a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the State as dictated by the Sixth Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. And they damn well better appreciate it. If I were speaking to an actual person, and not just insane with patriotism, you might be wondering who I am, whoever you are. My mother taught me never to talk to strangers, but she's in a better place now somewhere in Florida, God rest her soul, so she'll never know if I disobey her just this once. I go by many names, mostly due to the fact that I have various forms of less-than-legal identification, but they know me best as El Kabong. Why El Kabong? Because Quick Draw McGraw taught me that on the battlefield, if you can't play the kabonger, then the next best thing to do is smash someone over the head with it. That life lesson has stuck with me for many years; perhaps I'll have it written on my tombstone after I die a glorious death in the warzone. Plus, I like cartoons. Sue me. After being momentarily distracted by a delicious slice of apple pie, I stepped into the elevator and waited for it to take me to my destination. Five minutes later I remembered to press the button, after which the elevator lurched skyward like an Addams Family butler. A shock ran through my hands, and once I recovered from the static zap I received from touching the metal panel on the wall, a tingle ran through my fingers. This was it - there was no turning back now. The terrorists wouldn't know what hit them, at least until the trial, whereupon I'd be forced to abandon the anonymity of the Internet in order to testify against these anarchists in a court of law. I made a note to get my hair done to match ID #33 if that happened. The elevator stopped and the doors slid open, revealing agents running around the room as though a traitor had been discovered in their midst only fourteen posts prior. It was time to step up; it was time to take action; it was time to kabong. ... Now where the hell is my kabonger?
  19.
I don't want to step on Shinmaru or anything...
Haha, no problem. As I understand it, anyone can post a limerick any time he or she wishes to... I got unexpectedly busy after my post, so if you had to wait for me, you would've been waiting a while. :p There once was a man in the desert Went crazy stifling his pleasure His mother was a crab And she took a mighty stab Hurrah, chocolate syrup for dessert! Twenty minutes later and I'm still reeling. :animesmil Holy crap, what a great way to end the season. The
flash forward was so well executed; Jack is going to be such a mess in the future lol. (Random note: Man, Jack gets all the bad hair. The beard is just brutally ugly, yuck.) As far as whether that future is fixed or variable... Charlie's death points to the future being ultimately fixed, and as things are right now, the survivors are definitely heading toward that future. But something tells me that they'll be able to change it.
RESPONDING TO POINTS~
- Coffin: The theory I've read that makes the most sense so far is that Ben is the person who died. He's got no friends or family off the island, and it wouldn't be at all unusual for Kate to act the way she did if Jack suggested she go to Ben's funeral. As for Sergeant Suicidal, in the future it seems he becomes disturbed by the realization that Ben was right when he told him not to trust Naomi and to not use the radio. Jack's got nothing left in the outside world, and he wants desperately to return to the way things were on the island, where he was a respected leader and he had not one, but two ladies comin' round his way. Ben is Jack's last link to the island, and once that's severed, Jack's got nothing left. Of course, there are a whole set of questions that come along with this, the foremost being... how the hell does Ben survive long enough to die off the island? Why would Jack let him off the island when he said he'd kill Ben when the rescuers arrived? Who knows. The only other option that makes sense to me right now is that Juliet is in the coffin. Really, I wouldn't put it beyond Kate to get all pissy at the idea of going to Jack's island girlfriend's funeral. But if it's Juliet's viewing, then why would nobody be there? She had family, most notably her sister (unless she dies or something). EDIT: Now that I'm thinking clearer, I remember Jack saying that he was neither friend nor family to the deceased, so that would seem to count out Juliet, unless he had some sort of reason for hiding their relationship. Dagger mentioned Locke as someone who could be the person in the coffin, and thinking about it, that makes almost as much sense as Ben. With Ben's authority crumbling and Locke's desire to keep everyone on the island, I don't think it's too farfetched to believe Locke could take over Ben's role as leader of the Others. With that, Locke could also end up being Jack's final link to the island, hence why Jack would be so upset at Locke's death despite the fact the two haven't exactly been friendly for a while. The way the story is going right now, though, Ben being the dead person still makes the most sense to me. Ben told Jack not to use Naomi's radio to contact the outside, and Jack could look back on the decision to do that with intense regret, even though that really was the only logical thing to do at the time. - Kate's "he": Sawyer makes the most sense. Could be her as-of-yet-unconfirmed/unborn child, but eh. I hope Kate has the kid on the island. (By the way, the most depressing moment in the flash forward is the realization that Kate will probably live to get off the island. Argh. Kate gets a happy life of (possible) marriage and not being on the run from the law, while Jack ends up a total wreck? IS THERE NO JUSTICE??) - Jack mentioning his father: HE'S ON DRUGS. - Who's coming for everyone?: It ain't a rescue party, that's for sure. I'm sure this theory will probably be blown out of the water by the time Season 4 premieres, but I think there's a decent possibility Naomi was connected to Dharma. Who else would Ben think are "the bad guys"? The food drops and Kelvin and Desmond's work for Dharma in the hatch are somewhat solid proof Dharma wasn't finished with the island even after Ben helped the Others murder the island chapter of the Dharma Initiative, and now they could be making a move. - Sayid: HOLY CRAP YES. That was a Jack Bauer-approved kill right there. I loved the look he gave Sawyer afterward, too, like, "Yeah, I did that." Also loved Hurley saving the day and utterly bulldozing what's his face; awesome ****, I felt so bad for Hurley after Sawyer told him to take a hike. Furthermore, a sad, yet awesome, moment when Sawyer shoots Tom. The guy totally had it coming for being such a colossal prick to the survivors in seasons 1 and 2, but he became so lovably goofy this season that it was sad to see him go. My brother and I will definitely miss cracking jokes about Mr. Tom's awkward hello to Jack that we turned into a catchphrase. Godspeed, Tom.

"I'm [strike]Tom[/strike] dead, by the way."

- Crazy stuff with Mikhail surviving yet again. The guy just won't die. If he's still alive after eating a grenade blast, then, well, I just don't know. I'm assuming he's dead though. - CHAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRLLLLLIIIIIIEEEEEEEE. I believed in you all season, buddy, even when you got all clingy and possessive and creepy with Claire. Charlie was awesome taunting the Others ("It's Charlie! Tell him I said hi!"), and, as predicted, Charlie went out like a hero. Also, I think it's safe to say Penny's one hell of a lot closer to finding the island now... - Ben getting the piss beaten out of him the entire second half was horribly hilarious. Best part was when Rousseau elbowed him in the jaw. Ouch. Another cool, violent moment was Locke knifing Naomi; sure showed how desperate he is to stay on the island, though I guess not quite desperate enough to own Jack.
Lots of spoilers, yes! One final thing, however: Death list! Let's see how I did...
1. Ben (still alive for now) 2. Charlie (heroic death, +9 points) 3. Mikhail (assuming he ate it in the grenade blast, +8 points) 4. Juliet (still alive though totally ignored after Hurley saved everyone) 5. Naomi (dead and good riddance, +6 points) 6. Tom (dead btw, +5 points) 7. Desmond (still alive though weepy) 8. Kate (GOD DAMN IT STILL ALIVE) 9. Alex (still alive, nice reunion with mom) 10. Claire (still alive and her baby still has a giant-*** head)
28 points, not bad. :p
[spoiler']But I kind of agree about the Sayid thing, too. He doesn't really have any open ends to tie up, and there was that little teaser clip of him on his knees in the preview trailer.

Sayid's still got Nadia (who Charlie saved from the robber, in case you didn't recognize her at first, which I didn't). She can't be popping up in all those flashbacks just so we can squeal to ourselves and shout, "ZOMG NADIA~" Then again, Libby's barely been touched since we found out Desmond got the boat from her, so who knows... Really, I just don't want Sayid to die. He's pretty much one of the few people remaining on the island who has some actual sense.
