Ok, I'm done for now - oh, and new music sucks, especially Green Day and other such emo music (Now, that's just my opinion!)[/COLOR']
Hey, a sweeping generalization. Awesome. (Now, that's just my opinion!) :bdance: Anyway, here's my top ten band list as of right now: Sonic Youth (One of the godfathers of alternative rock, one of the most influential bands you'll find today, and they're still alive and making great music to this day. I'd put their best albums against any group's best.) Pixies (Another incredibly influential band. Black Francis and Kim Deal wrote some great, incredibly bizarre songs, and I love both of their vocal styles. I don't think that there's one song of theirs that I don't like.) Curve (Mmm... shoegazer. So very fantastic, and Curve basically perfected the genre in my opinion. Love Curve to death, and Toni Halliday may as well be my favorite vocalist ever. God, I love her voice so much.
Or they're just not into it. Now I'm not trying to start anything, but come on.... No point in being judmental if someone don't listen to a certain type of music.
Actually, I agree with RiflesAtRecess. I think that there are just too many great artists and bands out there to totally dismiss any one genre of music. I'm not that big into hip-hop, for example, but there are artists in the genre I like (MF Doom, Outkast, etc.). If you think that there are genres with absolutely no merit at all, then I think that you just aren't looking hard enough for the great musicians. They exist in all forms of music. Anyway... I try not to limit myself to certain genres, but I do have my preferences. I love shoegazer (Curve, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, etc.). The sound of shoegazing is incredibly melodic, and a lot of my favorite vocalists are/were in shoegazing bands. I can't get enough of it. :) I've also been listening to a ton of punk lately. Nothing like a good, simple barrage of guitars and drums to get your mind off of things. The best punk bands are so much fun to listen to.
Second would be Into the Woods[/b']. Two of my best-loved anime series deal with Western fairy tale archetypes and so forth, so how could I not fall head over heels for this? The songs aren't really the kind of thing you can walk around humming (although I've been known to bellow the "AGONY~~!!!" chorus in the shower from time to time), but the lyrics are clever and the soundtrack is very listenable. I like how it's both bittersweet and uplifting.
My brother and sister love this musical, and they got me to watch it about a month ago. I liked it a lot; I think I might watch it again soon. (Thanks for getting the "AGONY!1!11!111!" chorus stuck in my head, btw plz die k thx) I'm not too into musicals, but there are some others I enjoy. The Blues Brothers is my favorite. It's got everything: A killer soundtrack, hilarious comedy, great action sequences and car chases, a bajillion awesome cameos, a bonafide mission from God, and Carrie Fisher trying to kill John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. What's not to love? :) I'm also fond of The Wizard of Oz (of course :p) and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Bitter parents groups received more fuel for their crusade against the entertainment industry when an unfortunate young man died after taking the Beach Boys' "Wipeout" literally...
Can I choose the entire Final Fantasy IX soundtrack? The game is filled with wonderful pieces of music, and this is probably the best game OST I've had the pleasure of listening to.
I thought that I had already posted in here agreeing with you, but I guess not lol. FFIX's soundtrack is indeed awesome; it's up there with the Super Metroid, Ocarina of Time, and Chrono Trigger soundtracks as my favorite in gaming. The entire soundtrack is quality for sure. :) Also, I'd like to mention Metroid Prime's soundtrack... holy crap is that ever awesome. I love it. :D
Most people have a fetish. I'm not surprised Tarantino has one too. I don't find this much of a shock at all, really - it's really a nonissue in the grand scheme of things. lol[/color']
Yeah, basically. I don't know why this would be such a big deal to anyone - other people have way more bizarre fetishes than just a simple foot fetish lol. I've read about some pretty disturbing fetishes in the past, haha.

I think that Drix is right on the money. The big problem with restricting "offensive" speech is this: Who's to say what is and isn't offensive and what "serves the purpose of society's progression" and what doesn't? It seems like common sense but it really isn't. South Park, for example, has tons of stuff that many people would consider offensive, but it also has lots of incredibly sharp political and social satire. I would definitely say that South Park contributes towards the progression of society, but someone else might not think so due to the show's offensive content. Degrees of offensiveness of speech and the speech's worth to society are very, very subjective, and I don't think that there is (or ever will be) any one standard to actually measure those qualities by. Should I be able to force NBC to never show an episode of Friends in syndication because I think the show's a dull, vapid waste of space and doesn't contribute to society? Or because I'm offended by how seriously unfunny the show is? Of course not! If NBC wants to stink up the airwaves with Friends, and if lots of people watch the show, then that's their prerogative. Just like NBC has the freedom to put a crappy show on the air, I have the freedom to completely ignore it. It's the same thing with the political cartoons, in my opinion. Political cartoons have been offending people for centuries - frankly, I would expect a political cartoon to be at least somewhat offensive to somebody. If everyone agreed on the point that a political cartoon was making, then what would be the point to making it in the first place? Political cartoons are inherently controversial. I can't say that I care too much for the way the cartoonists are making their point, nor do I think the cartoons are very witty or funny, but I don't think that curbing the cartoonist's (or anybody's) right to expression is the way to go. Just as these cartoonists have the right to produce offensive cartoons, we all have the right condemn them. That can be done without completely infringing upon individual rights lol. Also, I don't think that the "lies" argument holds up very well, because the cartoon is clearly based in opinion rather than being an actual statement of fact. Statements of opinion are, and should be, protected speech, even if they are "offensive" opinions. From what I understand, the cartoonists drew absurd caricatures of Muhammad as a representation of self-censorship - the cartoons depicted Muhammad in that manner in order to state an opinion, which was elaborated on in the article accompanying the cartoons, and not to paint him as a terrorist. It's obvious to me, at least, that Muhammad wasn't a violent terrorist who carried a bomb under his turban. I don't think that any reasonable person would believe that; someone who is foolish enough to think that because of the cartoon probably already held that belief in the first place, honestly.
One more thing, though slightly irrelevant. My dodgy connections landed me a copy of the first episode of Season 2 today, and I swear to god,
the dude in the hatch is Liquid Snake from MGS all over. He talks like him, looks like him, and spouts out the word "brother" like anything. When he had Locke at gun point, the way he revealed himself by calling Jack "brother" just had Liquid splodged all over. Again, inter-textuality, though this time to video games, even if that wasn't the intention.[/spoiler'].
Haha, I never thought about that before - I can see some of the similarities, though lol. (Except that
Desmond seems to have a much better tan than Liquid Snake.
:p) Just more reasons to like
Desmond, though, I suppose.
I wish he were on the show more. :( Good to see that you're liking Lost. The second season is just as good. :) Anyway, I wish we didn't have to wait another week for the next episode - a Sawyer episode, even! Sawyer is definitely my favorite character on the show (though
Mr. Eko
may have something to say about that by the end of the season), so I'm looking forward to the new episode very much. More insight into Sawyer's character can be nothing but awesome.

I watch pro football every once in a while. I'm a very casual Raiders fan... basically that means that I don't dress up like a pirate, paint my face silver, or stab people. Personally, though, I like watching college football much more than the NFL; the games are much more exciting to me, and I can actually afford to go to some of them. :p However, I've definitely been keeping up with the postseason. It pains me a bit to say this, but I am rooting for the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Gotta keep the championship in the AFC. :)
Wait a minute, you're in FLORIDA. Where it's WARM. There will be no more complaints like that tolerated as long as there's snow on the ground up here in Iowa.
Correction: She lives in Florida, where it is insanely humid and muggy (I've been down there during the summer, and it's actually made me appreciate southern California's blazing hot, ultra-dry summers lol). It's a nice place, but I wouldn't want to live there, personally lol.
I love how Shinmaru and I live maybe 20 miles away from each other and we've made no attempt to meet in real life. It's probably for the best, though. There are more than a few members here who can vouch for how boring I am in real life. Thank you Morpheus, it's about time someone started up an account for OB. -Shy
Haha, if we met I bet that the world would collapse upon itself from all of the boring. Anyway, as you can all see, I added myself earlier. I bet that you were all just dying to see where I live - and now you know! By the way, there sure are a lot of OBers on the east coast... lol. w3$t $1d3 4 lyf3 d00dz

MST3K may very well be my favorite TV show ever... either that, Futurama, or The Simpsons. What a choice. Anyway, my first exposure to the show was during the Sci-Fi years; I'd say I watched MST3K for about three years or so before Sci-Fi "retired" it. (I was very sad that day. :() Because of that, I've seen far more Mike episodes than I have Joel episodes. I prefer Mike overall, but not by that much... they're both hilarious for different reasons (Mike is generally crazier, Joel has the funny, soft-spoken voice, etc.). My favorite episodes during Joel's tenure are "Cave Dwellers," "Pod People," "Manos, the Hands of Fate," "Eegah," and "Mitchell." My absolute favorite out of those is probably "Pod People," if only for the hilarious reproduction of a song sequence from the movie that Joel and the 'bots do. "It stinks!" Cracks me up every time. From the Mike years... I love "Prince of Space," "Space Mutiny," "The Final Sacrifice," "Quest of the Delta Knights," "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders," "Final Justice," "Horrors of Spider Island," and "Squirm." "Space Mutiny" is my favorite of them all. Mike, Crow, and Servo just tore that movie to pieces lol. And all of the nicknames that they gave the main character... haha. It was glorious. :) MST3K is awesome. I just wish I had enough money to afford the boxsets... I will have them one day, however. Oh, and you are officially the greatest person ever for starting this thread, Kisha. :)

My favorite is either the Legend of Zelda theme or the Super Metroid theme. Both songs are video game classics, and they get you in just the right mood for the game. The Super Metroid theme in particular is just perfect for the type of game that Super Metroid is... I love that soundtrack so much. It's amazing. :)

I Need Music Reccommendations - Instrumental
Shinmaru replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
I also recomend Pelican, Isis*, and Neurosis* if you wish to try heavier music. Explosions in the Sky is also another good one.
Pelican and Explosions in the Sky are both great. :) Godspeed You Black Emperor is also good from what little I've heard. I'm surprised that Mitch wasn't the first to mention them, haha. The Antarcticans are a good instrumental band; they're similar to Sonic Youth, if you've ever given them a listen (my favorite band, coincidentally lol). They make some very long songs, so you'd probably have to be in the right mood to listen to them, but they're awesome to listen to. -
One movie I really didn't enjoy was Lost in Translation. Although obviously a good film, the story didn't attract me at all, nor did the characters. I also hated the way they made fun of the Japanese. Or perhaps I'm just too young to understand it! XD
The movie wasn't so much making fun of the Japanese as it was highlighting how alienated and lost Charlotte and Bob are. They sort of roam around Japan and take in the culture, but they don't really understand it. You're getting a view of Japan as it appears to Bob and Charlotte; it's a very strange look, because neither of them know what to make of the Japanese culture. Their being lost in this 'strange' culture mirrors how lost and confused they are in their own lives. That probably won't change your opinion about the movie (can't fault you if you couldn't get into the story or characters, after all), but I hope that it explains the film a bit better.

We've already got a thread for the Nintendo DS here. If you'd like to post about the DS (hopefully in more detail than you've provided here), then you're free to do so in there. Thanks. :) Thread Closed

Haha, that chapter was awesome. The n00b misreading "Otaku Prom" as "0t4ku Pr0n" was a great joke, and the whole n00b singing bit cracked me up. The "I SP3LL UR NAM IN CAPS COZ u R0xx" line probably made me laugh the most. That was fantastic. You know that someone has to have used that line before... Great stuff, Solo. This story is so much fun. :)

I think that I would most definitely be ineptly warm and fuzzy at a wedding. And I do so listen to myself speak!! How I could not listen to that deliciously sexy, intelligent voice is beyond me... Anyway, great stuff here, Solo. I'm always entertained when you make a new entry to Enter the Net. Can't wait for the next part! :)
Question! Since I was thinking about the future, is there any "futuristic" invention that you'd really like to see happen someday? Mine is needle-less shots, which I've heard are actually in the works. *has a fear of needles*
The "What If? Machine" from Futurama. How cool would that be? You could have an answer to every stupid question you could ever think of! I'd probably wear the poor thing out within a couple of days. lol Has anyone ever had a dream but not really noticed it until later in the day, when you're just thinking about some random thing and you suddenly realize that all of the crazy events that happened to you earlier in the day were all just a dream? (Yes, this has happened to me more than a few times.)

The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2005 (Nominations Thread)
Shinmaru replied to Shy's topic in General Discussion
Sage Kaley I haven't been chatting with her for very long, but she's awesome. I mean, she started an MST3K thread for God's sake. If that isn't an indicator of complete and total niftiness, I don't know what is. Crappy Club For Jerks Because everyone loves blogs, right? Right?? Exactly. Arcadia Because she's in my signature, and therefore is awesome by association. Also she kind of sort of does a decent job of being slightly cool on her own. OtakuSennen He makes most of my banners. Once again, awesome by association. And he introduced me to The Perry Bible Fellowship, so he earns extra cool points for that. Desbreko [strike]Because he's my boss and his boot is scary. :( [/strike] Because he gave me stuff in Animal Crossing: DS. :) Generic NPC #3 Because he rawks more than Rawk Hawk. And that's a lot of rawk, let me tell you. He's also more punk rawk than Avril Lavigne, as unbelievable and shocking as that may sound. Furthermore, I have it on good authority that he, not The Scorpions, will rock you like a hurricane. Andy/satan665 Because Andy rhymes with 'dandy' which is a synonym of 'nifty.' It only makes logical sense that he make this list. Who are you to deny the power of logic?? Also he may be somewhat cool in one way or another. I hear he has magic powers. Alan (DeadSeraphim)/Raina (Hevn) Because it's nice to know that [strike]someone on OB is actually getting laid[/strike] romance can actually thrive in the online world. :) John John rules, that's all there is to it. Though our musical tastes sometimes clash (he doesn't like Okkervil River, the weirdo), he's gotten me into a few bands and vice versa. I appreciate that he always takes the time to reply to the band posts on my site, too. :)
The Communist Party Since Shy as good as outed me earlier, I might as well admit it: My favorite color is red, I was buddy buddy with Che Guevara and Mao Zedong, and I've never taken a drink of water in my life (only vodka, never water); I'm a Commie, through and through. You Capitalist pig-dogs will soon get what's coming to you when you are finished gorging yourselves on the blood of the worker! Recognition on the so-called "Nifty Fifty" is only the first step in re-establishing The Communist Party as the true power of the world. End transmission.
