1.
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel Right now, I'm looking forward to Beyond Good and Evil and MK: DD as my next two GCN purchases... this is in the wings. Depends on what other magazines give it. All I know is that I'm hearing far more better things about those two games than PoP, and money is too tight for all three.
Ah, Beyond Good and Evil is another game on my watch list right now. EGM knocked it down a bit because of its supposed short length, but ten hours or so sounds good to me, considering how good the game sounds. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! goes without saying, heh. I am definitely going to pick that game up no matter what.
2. The original Prince of Persia games were really good (except for the last Prince of Persia, which was pretty forgetable). I especially enjoyed the SNES Prince of Persia...I liked the end puzzle at the end, heh. So simple, yet so many people never seem to get it...the mark of a great puzzle :D Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is definitely at the top of my list, as well...there are so many great games out there and I simply can't get them all :( I just hope that Sands of Time sells well because it's certainly deserving of great sales. Could be a sleeper hit, in my opinion. What's most intriguing to me is the time powers, though...I really wanna take those for a test run and see how much the developers integrated them into the game. I just hope it isn't a disappointing gimmick like in Blinx; that game was more than a bit disappointing.
3. I've heard tons of great things about this game, it's amazing. For those who might not know, the Prince of Persia series is an Adventure/Platform series that has been around for years. Sands of Time is the latest game in the series. The gameplay is said to be phenomenal. The controls are tight and easily used and the time powers that are at your disposal in the game are said to be quite fun to use. Also, from what I've heard, the fighting does not get repetitive and the puzzles are tough but not too tough. The story is also said to be pretty deep. Sands of Time has been getting incredible reviews from just about everyone. I'm wondering if anyone else is going to get this game and why or why not.
4.
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel I have a fondness for random games back from those days. NES and Atari mostly. Dragonfire and Kaboom! on Atari 2600 rock. Clash at Demonhead, Ducktales, Little Nemo... on and on. Games really aren't the same anymore, at least not as frequently.
I remember Clash at Demonhead and Ducktales...awesome, awesome stuff. I was also a Gauntlet addict early in my life, as well.
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel Nintendo isn't a toy. It's a way of life. Yes, I am a loser.
Ah, this is just too perfect! I will quote this until the day I die...*makes that quote his official credo* :D
5.
Originally posted by Shinobi1827 Well, the ps 1 had a five year manufacturer's warrenty, even if the ps2 didn't. I don't know, but i'll check. Oh, and just so you know the PS1 is over 8 years old and they still make games for that. Just so you know.
I don't see why you have to take on such a condescending attitude. I know that games are still made for the PlayStation; however, that's a rarity in the gaming industry. Usually, when the leap forward to another console is made, the number of games coming out for the old console will slowly trickle down and then stop completely. Besides, how many good games do you see still being made for the PlayStation? Not many, I'd imagine. And you asked where Tony got his information from earlier, right? Well, I don't think it's too much to ask where you got your information from. Perhaps you can reference the official website or the PlayStation/PS2 instruction manual, if you so firmly believe what you are saying. Until you present some actual proof, I'm not inclined to believe your information. EDIT: Here's a little something Shroom showed me right now that'll validate Tony's claim that the PS2 has a warranty of three months.
LIMITED WARRANTY FOR THE PLAYSTATION CONSOLE Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) warrants to the original purchaser that this product (hardware, game discs and accessories) shall be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ninety (90) days of the date of the purchase. If this product is determined to be defective during the warranty period, SCEA agrees to either repair or replace, at it's option, the SCEA product. You must call 1-800-345-SONY to recieve instructions to obtain repair/replacement instructions.
This is from the official instruction manual. As you can see, it clearly states that the console in question has a warranty period of 90 days.
6.
Originally posted by Shinobi1827 3 months? Uhm, it's like a 5 year warranty, where do you get your information?
Really, this statement is ridiculous when you consider a few simple things... 1) A video game company would have to be crazy to make a 5 year warranty for a console that they'll probably only make games for only five years. It's just not good business. 2) Nintendo has always had the longest warranties for their consoles. It's a fact. And, what is their warranty? According to the instruction booklet included with the GameCube, it has a warranty of exactly 12 months (1 year). So, you see, it's a bit of a stretch (and that's putting it lightly) to say that Sony has a five year warranty for the PS2. Unless you got some sort of special deal that I am not aware of.
7. I've been taking a ceramics class in school for the past few months and I'm surprised at how much I've enjoyed it. All I've made so far are a few bowls but it's really enjoyable going through the whole process of actually making them and glazing them. You really feel a sense of accomplishment when you get the pieces back from the glaze kiln...you can't help but look at the pieces and say "Wow, I made this?" Even with bad looking pieces lol. I really like the environment in my class, too. It's nice and cool and it's a great break from the horribly hot weather in California. And it's actually pretty relaxing, too...working with the clay relieves a bit of tension, I've found. So, how many other people have taken up ceramics as either a class or a hobby? How many of you have enjoyed it to the extent that I have?
8. I'm very fond of the FLCL banner but it still needs some work. The images are a bit fuzzy and the lines that stick out when some of the shorter images pop up are a bit distracting. I like the new banner, too. The font looks really good and goes with the whole Evangelion theme. I like the background, too; the blue goes very well with the bright lights at the far left side of the banner. Great stuff, Sennen.
9.
Originally posted by Shinobi1827 What do you mean, the cd player in the PS1? That worked perfectly, gave you the images sowing bass levels, etc, and more. The DVD player? What's wrong with it? You may say that they need to take all that stuff out, but that stuff alone will double their sales. Triple. becasue you don't nedd to fill a room to get everything. IT'S IN ONE BOX.
Sure, it worked fine, but it was very cumbersome to use. Why buy a PlayStation to listen to CDs when you could buy a CD player? It doesn't make any sense, really. The same with the DVD player in the PS2. I don't know how many people are (foolishly, I might add) buying it just for the DVD capabilities, but I assume it's not many.
10. I live in La Puente, which is thankfully out of the way of the fire, but we're still feeling the effects of it. Our air quality, which wasn't too great to begin with, has gotten much worse because we now have ash floating around everywhere. As one of my teachers described it, "It's like it's snowing, but with ash rather than snow." Plus, all the smoke and stuff is making everything even hotter than it usually is because it's trapping heat down here. I believe that's the source of the recent heat wave around here, heh.
11.
Originally posted by Semjaza Azazel I don't know what the interest is in this. You could buy seperate things that do stuff better than this does for around the same price, most likely less. Oh well.
Took the words right out of my mouth, Tony (first time I've called you that on the boards - I must write this date down :p). You could easily buy everything included in the PSX seperately for about the same price (possibly a little more or a little less depending on where you go) and it will all work better, too. Face it, people, additions like this to video game consoles aren't the easiest things to use and deal with, plus they're very limiting. Need I mention the CD Player in the PS1? Or the DVD Players with the PS2 and X-Box? So, yeah, the PSX doesn't really seem to be worth it, to me.
12. My favorite boss has always been Blind the Thief from Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. It wasn't actually that difficult but that's not what you're thinking when you actually fight him, heh. It starts out very easy but when he has two heads flying around shooting fire at you, with a third head shooting lasers at you, you're pretty much pleading for your life. I managed, somehow, to beat him with just a quarter of a heart left. My palms were sweaty as hell afterwards lol. My least favorite boss would be that Dodongo, as well. *yawns* Boring...I could've beaten it with my eyes closed...
13. Okay, I think I'm gonna have to close this. Cyke, I definitely know that you know better than to make a near-useless post in a thread. You could've easily told James over PM or AIM that you had fun debating him.
14. My banner rules and everyone knows it =P Yep, nice and simple - just how I like it. And it looks like a regular OB banner, too, since it's nice and small now. And I like the shiny effect, too - though, my banner could stand to be cleaned with some Windex lol.
15. What, no mention of the NES? I'm shocked, people. Shocked, horrified, disgusted and tired. Anyway, the NES was like my best friend when I was a kid. Super Mario Bros. 3 and I were like inseperable buddies; friends to the end, we were. I was completely and totally addicted to that game. I would get up at 5:00 in the morning just to play it. In fact, that's probably why I always wake up that early in the morning now o_O I played with Ninja Turtles a lot, too. They were just really cool. I had the van, the helicopter, the sewer and the Technodrome (yes, I remember what it was called). Of course, they all ended up missing limbs eventually. Hey, those turtles had to earn their victories against Shredder! I also had a ton of Spider-Man toys. Awesome little figures those were. Just about everyday, Spidey waged war against the bad guys. I even had the different figures where Spider-Man showed different degrees of damage and I'd switch them around in the middle of fights lol. The Super Nintendo goes without mentioning. Still my favorite system of all time...I loved the little guy ^_^ EDIT: I also had a crap load of Star Wars figures...I still do, actually. I even play with them a lot. I just improvise new scenes for them to go through...it's the weirdest thing in the world lol. Where else are you gonna see Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker riding in a dune buggy trying to escape from the Ninja Turtles?
16. Real Name: Shinmaru Hazuki Callsign: Two-Face Age: 25 Gender: Male Alliance: Southern Vipers Biography: Shinmaru was just your average person growing up. At least, he would have been average if we all lived in a psycho alternate universe, but that's beside the point. To put it bluntly, Shinmaru suffers from a split personality disorder in which he is one of two extremes. His first extreme is what is known as the "justice personality." Basically, this personality will stop at nothing to do what he feels is just and will employ any means neccessary, in his views, to get the job done. The other extreme is the "sadistic personality." This personality thoroughly enjoys every second of torture that he employs; it is safe to say that he even gets sexual pleasure out of another person's pain. It is almost impossible to tell which personality you are interacting with, as they remain dormant in a sort of "neutral personality" until they are provoked. Shinmaru was also an avid reader of comics growing up and he always had a connection with the character of Two-Face from Batman. Thus, he always carries a penny (a penny because he doesn't feel he can measure up to the worth of his idol) around with him to decide the correct time to dispense his unique brand of physical and mental pain. Personality: When unprovoked, Shinmaru is basically an average person. He's quite intelligent (in a surreal sort of way) and very quiet. He interacts with few people, often opting just to talk to himself because he finds the conversation more stimulating. However, he is easily provoked into either one of his extremes, so people learn not to get used to his "regular" personality. Weapon: A special penny whose outside "edges" are razor sharp. The penny also has a unique boomerang ability, so that Shinmaru never loses it. This is the same penny that he uses to decide when to set out on a violent course of action. EDIT: Thought I should add something to make the weapon a bit more potent, heh. There is also a special button, so small that it can not be seen by the naked eye, in Abe Lincoln's eye that expands the penny to about the size of a small circular shield. Pressing the button again causes sharp spikes to jut out along the outside of the penny (all along the circle, that is). Picture: Well, he just looks like Shin from Cowboy Bebop. I just designed the whole Shinmaru mythos around him, heh. But, for a pic, you can just view the attachment.
17. Some really nice work, Sennen. Since I have the inside scoop, I got to see a few of these banners (okay, only one -__-) before Sennen posted them here, hehe. Anyway, really nice work you have here. My favorite is definitely the Asuka banner - the flaming red looks very, very cool. If it didn't say OtakuSennen on it, I'd think about stealing it for myself (though, I'm still waiting for you to post up my new biatch banner ~_^). I didn't really think that the green worked with the Shinji banner. It just looks a bit odd to me. The banners are a bit plain, too, but I'm still not sure if you've gotten used to the program yet, so I can't really hold that against you. But it's still good work, especially since you're just starting with the program. I look forward to better work from you in the future ^_^
18.
Originally posted by Flame Priestess Hmmmm... Isn't Phantasy Star Online 1&2 for gcn an ONLINE game? Nintendo sells modem and broadband adapters, too! They just don't really use them!
Er...are you sure you posted in the right thread? Your post seems to be more relevant in this topic: Phantasy Star Online Version 1 & 2. Please try to be a bit more careful about what you post and where you post.
19. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha! Nice that I got a sneak preview yesterday ~_^ The banner is great, though. The images are very crisp and clean and the text goes well with the look of the characters. The first two characters look very nice...South Park-esque ^_^ (though, I haven't seen Fooly Cooly, so I can't comment on how well the banner looks in that aspect). I also see that you fixed up the border, too. I didn't think that the dashed line border went very well with everything. The solid banner works much better. I don't have any major problems with the banner, Syk3 - one of your best, in my opinion. And I've seen a lot of them ~_^
20. EDIT: The images didn't load right, so don't look for any images >_> Since neither King of Sony made a thread about this awesome game, I think I'll take the initiative ~_^ For those who never played the first Fatal Frame, the basic premise of it was that you could only kill ghosts by taking their picture with a camera and thus stealing their souls. It sounds a bit lame but the great atmosphere of the game really hooked you in. This is the sequel to the original Fatal Frame. The premise is basically the same: You control Mio and Mayu Amakura as they follow a crimson butterfly into a forest and stumble upon an abandoned village. This is where the game begins. From what I've heard, the atomsphere is much improved over the original. The graphics are dingy and gray, very much like those in the Silent Hill series. Sound is also used to high effect in the game...the area remains eerily silent until you are approached by a spirit. This game does a great job of building up tension. Light is also used to great effect in this game. The light sources and shadows are eerily realistic. The different uses of dark and light only add to the spine-tingling tension that the game sets up. It's quite evident that the game is not meant to be a quick scare game like Resident Evil, but a psychological thriller like Silent Hill. I'm not quite sure when the game is coming out, but it's definitely on my watch list. I'd suggest that others keep an eye out for the game, as well.
21.
Originally posted by PoisonTongue Sorry, Shin, but I've gotta do this. Kefka is a flat character. The very definition of "flat character" is one who is a cliche...a stock character...an exaggeration. Think of the Clown from Shakespeare. He's put in there for the sole purpose of making people laugh. He has no depth or fullness to him. He is there simply for the sake of being there and acts as such. He makes a fool of himself the entire time--wait...fool...another term for Shakespeare's Clown was..."Fool." Yep. Stock character. Not saying that Sephiroth isn't flat, but he's less flat. He shows a more sincere emotion and doesn't resort to yelling and shouting and generally making a fool of himself. He's not a cliche to the extent of Kefka. Kefka is a caricature. Sephiroth shows depth through restraint. But anywho, I've since drifted away from RPGs, but when I did play them... I recall Super Mario RPG. That was a fun game. My timing sucked trying to get Freebie attacks and such, but SMRPG combined two of my then favorite gaming tendencies: RPG and Super Mario Bros. How could I go wrong with it? I loved the humor about it, too. The characters were nuts, Bowser especially. Peach's frying pan had to have been the funniest weapon ever. Just seeing the enemy reactions to getting beaten in the head with it. Priceless. :) As I recall, most of Peach's weapons were hilarious. Final Fantasy 7. Great game. Spent hours upon hours playing it during my Soph year of high school. The scope of the game was remarkable. 3 disc, 70+ hours, epic storyline. Great stuff. The Chocobo raising and quest to get KOTR were games in themselves, and I loved Golden Saucer. I spent entire nights just playing the games-within-a-game. Final Fantasy 6. This was one of the last RPGs I played, simply because I started lacking the time required to play them. It was a really fun game, had some memorable moments (finding Gogo was my fav ^_^), and the battle commands rocked. Attacking wasn't a chore like in other RPGs; attacking was actually entertaining.
*shrugs* No need to apologize; you have your opinion and I have mine ^_^ I just thought that Kefka was sort of a fresh take on the typical RPG villain. He didn't become ultra-powerful until later in the game and had to resort to trickery and backstabbing to achieve his goals. He wasn't some moody, ultra-powerful badass and that's why I enjoyed his character so much. Super Mario RPG...I had so much fun playing this game even though it was a bit short (for an RPG) and really easy (and this was when I was no great shakes at video games, heh). I loved how Square fleshed out the characters a bit more (especially Bowser...you gotta love him in this game) and really gave them some personality. The story was hilarious, I loved all the little Nintendo references sprinkled throughout the game and the battle system was deep enough to hold my interest. Final Fantasy 7 is another good RPG. It's quite amazing how Square manages to take a seemingly simple story and make it very complex (the number of people who still haven't figured the story out amazes me o_O). The battle system was decent enough to keep me playing and all the minigames were great ways to spend your time (who doesn't like gambling on Chocobos :D). I still go back and play this game every once in a while and I've beaten it about seven times now. So, I think it's safe to say that I enjoy the game ~_^
22. It really depends on where your interests are at. The GBA SP (if you go the GBA route, definitely go for an SP) has a solid lineup of platformers (Castlevania, Mario Advance, etc.) and RPG/Strategies (Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, etc.) Plus, you have the huge library of Game Boy games that are compatiable with the GBA. And, if you travel a lot, then GBA is the system to get. However, there is one thing that might tip the scales heavily into the GameCube's favor: Game Boy Player. If you have enough money to get a GameCube and a Game Boy Player, then I would definitely suggest getting that. The Game Boy Player, in case you don't know, lets you play any and all Game Boy/Color/Advance games on your GameCube. The GameCube has a ton of awesome titles to go along with all these games, as well. Since you're coming into this in the middle of the GameCube regime, you'll have access to tons of top-notch games like Smash Bros. Melee, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, etc. It's a literal treasure trove of gaming. I would definitely suggest GameCube. To me, it just has more titles that are worth buying and the Game Boy Player gives it the definite advantage over the GBA. But, to be honest, you can't got wrong with either decision ~_^
23. This thread is insanely old, but since Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will be coming out soon, I figured that conversation about the game would be picking up and this thread has some good information and screens...so why not use 'em? Anyway, the review for Double Dash came out in the new issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. They really seemed to like it lol. Two 10s and a 9.5, heh. Of course, it still has the standard great graphics and tight controls that we've come to expect from the Mario Kart series. However, the whole dynamic of the series has changed with the addition of two people on each kart. Mixing and matching the characters riding the karts provides an entirely new level of strategy to the game. You can go with all light, all medium, or all heavy...or a combonation of any of the three (however, the kart you ride will always be the kart of the heavier character). The character you choose matters more than that, too. Each character, I believe, can use items that are specific to them only, which adds even more strategy to the gameplay. EGM also added that the LAN play was fantastic. You can use splitscreen in conjunction with LAN to get eight players on only two GameCubes and two TVs. Also, they said that you can get 16 players at once if you play in co-op mode, which sounds like a blast to play...now if only I could play LAN >_< Anyway, I'll be sure to pick this game up when it comes out. I was previously on the fence about it but this positive review from people I trust has got me ready to spend my money on it.
24. Very nice work. I love the morbid description that you put into these events. It's always great when writers take the time to describe every facet of what they're writing about because it makes it that much easier to imagine yourself in the story, watching what's going on right as it is happening. Obviously, the censorhip takes a bit away from the story, but you can hardly help that, heh. The dashes are easier to stand than the asterisks, at least. I also enjoy stories that start off with an event and end with that same event...you can really see how the events that have transpired are flashing before Jake's eyes.
25. The reason why this rule is in place is because posts are much easier to read when you can actually read them. Online "grammar" may be faster to type but it's confusing to sift through and it's very annoying to look at. If you do not think it is fair, then feel free to go to a message board that does allow you to post in that manner because the rules certainly aren't going to change here, heh. Especially not for something like this.
