I just tested it out, Adam, and the counter is working now. Thank you.

Haha. Not so, my friend, not so. If you really knew me and my friends, you wouldn't say that. But I can't convince you that we're pretty decent gamers (iincluding when it comes to fighting games) without actually having you play with us. So let's drop that whole thing.
Actually, the quality of your peers and yourself is something that would aid in this disucssion, but yes, there is no way to indicate that unless you've played in regional tournaments. :-/ Oh well, on to point 2.
That's "fighting games 101" material right there. Even when I "button mash," I learn which of my moves do what and employ them as I think would be best. My button mashing is not "pressing random buttons"; it's simply playing using straight-up intuition.
Ok, so you are learning moves and tricks as you play. That's great. In fact, we can forget about your peers and focus on you, especially since you believe your friends are veterans/masters of the fighting games and I'm prone to disagree. We'll remove all variables except skill. In SC2 or VF4, are you saying that if you fought a more experienced version of yourself, that the inexperienced version would hand your rear to the experienced one? If you "mastered" the game and your "novice" version played against you, you're sure that the experienced one would have trouble or even lose to the novice one? Your logic seriously eludes me. Why is it that you are allowed to adapt and learn from your opponent, yet your experienced people can't do the same and outdo you, since they are more seasoned and should be able to catch on faster than you?
The games I pointed out as "n00b-resistant" were Killer Instinct and Super Smash Bros. Melee. That's it. And those ARE "n00b-resistant." How do you figure I like easy-to-learn games? Just because I like DOA more than SC2 doesn't mean I like it for its simplicity. I dislike it for its simplicity. I like it for its graphics/animation. I like SC2 for its music. Currently my favorite game to play is Ninja Gaiden, and once I'm done getting all the scarabs I'm gonna move on to very hard. I wouldn't say that I like easy-to-learn games.
I'm not familiar with Killer Instinct, but the other two games, DOA and SSB:M, I know to be games that you can pick up at a friends house in less than an hour. They are both games where you don't need to learn much in order to join the fray of players. Granted, there is another level of depth for SSB:M, but in a four-way free for all, individual skill becomes diluted. So, novice and expert can collide and no one would be the wiser.

(I don't mean your girlfriends, I mean people like me or my other hardcore gamer friends)
You have definately been playing the wrong crowd of people. No offense to any of your peers that live around you, but they must be slow at learning and therefore assumed, after a set period of time, that they've "mastered" the game, without actually learning anything. Come along anyone - girlfriends included - they lose. What an epiphany... Virtua Fighter and Soul Caliber 2 are not games where you "master" a fighting style and then expect to win. The focus (what makes the games deep) is in adapting to your opponent's fight style. You may have a default style with which you open every fight, but it has to transform and conform with respect to your opponent's. You aren't going to use fancy moves and tricks against a button masher - that's just wasteful. Instead, you are going to use wide and long range moves to screw those types over. In addition, you aren't going to use your best moves to start a fight with - that's giving away your chance at victory. If you realize this fact, you don't have to master much to take down a n00b. Problem solved. Any other flaws? There's also the point of "flow," which ties into style, but it's not necessary or important to point it out at this point. Now, just looking at what games you've pointed out as "deep" and "n00b-resistant," I can tell that you like easy-to-learn games. Half or more of DOA's fight is countering, which is just a direction and the block button. Now, add that with the knowledge of what type of move (high, mid, low) your opponent specializes in, and half your battle is done for you. You've just learned nothing except statistics and BS. Now, the other half of the fight is pretty simple. Already, the game's speed is set to "underwater:" everyone is ridiculously slow (Ein's got some fast moves - comparatively speaking ). The slow motion aspect gets boring really fast, and the resulting unresponsiveness borders on revolting. The only thing that actually makes you wait so long for a move to finish is how cool it looks. Aside from that, people (unfortunately) praise this game for the women. If you took that part away, so many people would not be so blind to the faults of this game. But what are you going to do, "sex sells." And sex is not deep.
Now, I don't care if a game doesn't stress skill quite so much if there's other things it has to offer.
Actually, for fighting games, skill is one thing I look for. Sure, fun is certainly important, but fighting games are supposed to be competitive. How can you be competitive if there's no skill involved?

Yes, yes, I've been having the exact same problem! My IP changes everyday, so if other people's hasn't been changing, mine has. However, I haven't gotten my daily free hit for a few days now. Do I have to be not logged in for the hit to count or something? ;)

Anime Which ANime Character do you dislike/ Like the Least
AzureWolf replied to Chocobo Gene's topic in Otaku Central
I have to disagree with the Hercule group. While the character's design and look is repulsive, and he does take undue credit, he's not a flat-out bad person. As we see later in the series,
Hercule's the one responsible for befriending good Buu and then destroying evil Buu
. While not a hero, he represents people's hope in the series. Even in anime, action speaks louder than words. Hercule is full of hot air when he tries to boost his fame, but his actions more make up for it. Ugh, DBZ... ::shudders:: -
Anime Which ANime Character do you dislike/ Like the Least
AzureWolf replied to Chocobo Gene's topic in Otaku Central
Panda brings about an good corollary to your already interesting thread, Gene. I'd really like to hear if you feel that your hatred towards the selected anime character reflects something about you in real life; and of course, what that something is. Wow, the worst anime character... I'm going to have to think about that one. If I were to pick one out of what I'm currently watching, though, I would put Hyuuga Neji from Naruto on top of my list. One of my pet peeves - maybe my strongest one - is arrogance. There's something worse than hatred within someone who is too full of themselves to see the truth or accept others. Orochimaru's tongue has nothing on this guy. -
Did you at least look up a "chemical nomenclature" book before coming up with that name? "Bi-hydro?!" Not only should there be no hyphen, but hydrogen cannot be abbreviated like that. Also, look up Gibbs' paradox: if liquid A is the same as liquid B, how can you tell that they are mixing when put together? So, right there, you'd have to argue pretty hard to say that water easily mixes with itself. This forum is Otakuboards. No one is going to fall for something so obvious. Respect the members' competence.

I think it would be cool if we could have feedback on wallpapers, maybe in the same fashion as the fanart is done. You know, I'd like to know what people think of my wallpapers, and it'd be cool to see an overall rating.

Like food, everyone has a different taste in anime. There's variety of anime, and to be a healthy otaku, you should get a good dose of each kind. Chances are, people who are anime cynics had a bad first impression with anime. That is, they saw a series or a few episodes of many animes that were not up their alley. To compare, giving someone brocolli when they are a bread person at a newly opened restaurant would pretty much scare the person away for good. I mean, you could bring them back to the place, but it'd be quite a feat to do so. I'm hungry...

I wouldn't say that sex sells for any special reason. It's preference, really. Some people are bought on sex, others on action, and still others on sincerity. It's just a form of propaganda that works towards some audiences and dwindles against other ones. Haha, I find it interesting how little sex-related material there is in the viagra commercials... :)

Yes, I know what you mean about people not being around when you need them to be. That's known as Murphy's Law. However, I don't think it's entirely true... You see, you tend to only remember things when they go awry. That's why they say if you do something wrong, you'll learn from that mistake moreso than if you do something right. You tend to remember it better because you brush aside things when they do go right. Not just you, but everyone just has a natural tendency to appreciate only faults/failures more strongly than successes. Haha, I just said the same thing four different ways!
But the freezing sites also includes Shinmaru's site for some odd reason O.O;;;;.
It's a good thing you mentioned Shinmaru's website. On the school computers, whenever I go to Shin's website, there's a pop-up saying that there's an error, and if I want to keep running whatever caused the error. That might actually be the cause of your computer trouble rather than a large compilation of pictures and sounds.

I'm wondering... Why is there any restriction placed on myO? Shouldn't every person be free to put whatever they want on their personal page? If other people don't like it, I don't think it's fair to punish the person who signed up expecting that kind of freedom. No one is forcing another person to visit their page, right? I'm not a computer buff, so I might be missing something. I'm just curious since most of the problems people are now having could be solved by just removing any and all restrictions.

Dark Kakashi, what part of "Do Not Directlink" do you not understand? Be considerate of the website, its talented creator, and NarutoEx's contributions.

Better yet, forget about having this whole times and time zone thing. Instead, we should have the feature that OB has: you can see which posts/threads are new, and there's a bullet if you've posted (or, in the case of myO, commented) in the new entry. Plus, you could see if the entry is popular in the same fashion as OB. I'm not saying it should exactly be like that, but the general function should be the same.

AzureWolf Arden "Test, TEST, TEST... Stay focused, c'mon, just stay focused for one measly hour. Ok, the skeletal muscles can only contract, not relax, and that's why those muscles have complementary ones. Heh, my tricep itches. That means I'll need to contract my bicep to scratch it. That's it... Yeah, I don't know why it was itching. Maybe it was because I used too much soap this morning? Or was it too little?" "What am I doing?! The test, the test! Ok, what was I thinking? Something about muscles. Yeah, and the biceps and triceps being complementary. Maybe I should use another example? The teacher used that example too many times during lecture. I don't want to regurgitate everything he says. I definately don't want to sound like this geezer. Haha, that was so embarrassing when he started yelling, 'the body is a terrible thing to waste.' That's as bad as my history teacher's 'brain fart' comment..." This mental cycle continued until the teacher called an end to the examination. "Alright, time's up. Hand in your exam before I leave the room." "Doh!" thought Arden. "Why do I always do this? I'm so screwed... Well, whatever the grade, it would be better than not handing in the test at all. I could only imagine what a zero would do. Oh wait! Professor!" Arden rushed to stop the professor at the door and handed his paper in. The professor gave him a condescending "I have no hope in you" look and accepted Arden's test. True to his prophecy, Arden's grade reflected his attention span: low, and dangerous in the long run. "Oh man," thought Arden, "I should seek some counsel about my current dilemma. Maybe I should make something up, like I'm very stressed these days because my great aunt died? Would they background check that? Hey, this school is notorious for not keeping with their paperwork. Hmm..." "How's the food?" Arden's friend asked. "You are eating it like it's actually good." "Huh?" Arden realized he was munching away mindlessly at what was probably the worst combination of pizza and toppings ever. "Oh god! I think I'm going to throw-up!"

We can all dream, but I don't think people's wallets will be any fatter in the future. What I think you two are forgetting is the financial aspect of gaming: all this technology will have a price to go along with it. I mean, take a look at the PS2's ridiculous online offer: buy the system, buy the modem, buy the game, and buy a hard drive, AND pay to play the game online. No thank you... Additionally, online gaming is overrrated. It's a great idea, but until an acceptable speed becomes the standard (56k is still standard), there's no way online gaming can take off. Add this dilemma to the fact that you still have to pay to play a game you already bought for 50 bucks, and you've got a financially impractical future of gaming. I don't think online gaming is the future. There's so many other things to address until that time, such as a more intuitive control scheme for certain games thanks to the addition of another dimension. Maybe even a revolutionary controller, one that is nothing like the all-too similar controls of today!

I read the original Dune story a long time ago, during the summer when I was entering high school. We were sent a list of books and had to read any three from the list. I love sci-fi, and my sister was always fond of the book, so I gave it a shot. It was a sound investment (of time). The Dune universe is very intriguing, but the story's development was rather slow. I thought this book was some kind of political satire or something, since there were two rival families looking to be cool in the emperor's eyes. What kept me reading were the few hints dropped here and there that the story's so much more. Needless to say, reading past the slow introduction to the Dune universe was rewarding. The ideas Frank Herbert came up with were ingenious. The most interesting aspects of the Dune universe (to me) were the Fremen suits and the physiological changes a person undergoes in this environment (as fictional as it was). What was the most interesting aspect of the Dune universe to you?

myOtaku (as in the service) is just a collection of blogs by Otakus. It's still around, and is a separate entity from OB, meaning you have to manually set everything up if you want one. That also means that someone could have taken your name by now! How long have you been using my otaku? I think I'm one of the first few to signup. I signed up around 07-31-2003 and my myO has been active ever since. I remember there was a huge campaign over here at OB, telling everyone to register ASAP. At the time, no one was exactly sure what myO was! It's come a long way, haha. How frequently do you work with my otaku? Hmm... it varies. When I get the chance, I put a lot of work into the thing. Other times, I would say I work on it once or twice a week. I made a few welcome banners, and the myO avatars are fun since they are so big. I had some help with color scheming by the one-and-only Uchiha, though. You'll need to put some chunk of time when you first start, though. There's a lot of things you'll have to mess around with before it becomes the way you want it. After that, though, everything's pretty much easy to deal with. What all of you do with my otaku? Well, everyone does something different. Ideally, I want to talk about anime, but I haven't gotten around to that. =/ As I said before, it's mostly a blog thing. I'm not sure what you mean by this question, but if you mean "what is something everyone does the same?" then... Everyone hangs out at everyone else's myO. We sign people's guestbooks, leave comments, putting our 9 cents into the blog. Greeting new people via guestbook signatures is very nice. I know it's always a surprise for me when someone signs my guestbook, haha. In short, it's a really friendly community - friendlier than OB, I dare say...

Art Can it be?! Domon's first attempt at a banner!!
AzureWolf replied to Domon's topic in Creative Works
Hmm... *nods* I see, I see... Great ideas, but I think there's room for improvement. The grain effect, IMO, should be restrained to the BG, making it look like the mech is something beyond it's 2D environment, as if it surpasses it. It'll make the stock picture stand out more as well. For only legibility's sake, the text should also be above/outside the grain filter. While the words can be read, they aren't clear. If that was the intention, at least see how my idea looks before rejecting it. In fact, I'd like to see how the entire thing would look without the filter. The BG is very nice, and the filter may add character, but it'd be interesting nonetheless. Lastly, borders are a must. Hope that helps. ^_^ -
That's a very well-executed theme right there. The only thing I could say that seems... strange(?) would be that the avatar is larger than the banner in terms of height. That just seems a little weird. Aside from that, the BG is a very nice touch, and the stock pictures appear very natural on it. The positioning of the hand and the light in the banner was a nice touch. No complaints here. ^_^

Although I would have agreed with the majority when I first played JSR:F, I have to say, the game really grows on you. There's no denying the fact that JSR:F's difficulty is stuck on "loser," but when you play the game just for mindless grinding and gaming, it beats out its predecessor. Yes, I know it's stupid how you can't lose in those "fights" against rival gangs, but look past that for a moment. The original was so much harder, and so playing through the game's story was always fun, not soporific. On the other hand, JSR:F's true claim to fame is when you have completed the game and just try to unlock all the secrets and do the tricks. You could even do that while playing through the story, but the point is, it's the extras that make JSR:F fun, whereas the original was fun for it's innovative core design.

I can understand video game things happening out west, but why are all the big anime conventions over there as well? It's such a bummer. I hear that Tycho and Gabe from PA will be attending the convention yet again, so that'd probably be the highlight of the convention if I went. To those of you who are going: what are you looking forward to the most? Is there a particular reason you are going, or just want to enjoy the convention in it's entirety? There's got to be one thing that outweighs all the other events for you.
-
I currently have one suggestion. I didn't read through all the suggestions (some were pretty cool!), but I did do a search for the word "preview." Anyway, I think a "preview post" like we have here at OB would be a cool thing to have. It would be helpful to make sure all the HTML and what-not came out properly.
-
Whoa... Are you the Ruby of the old OB? Haha, I remember you! Nice to see that you are still around! Getting to the artwork... the banner's really nice. The purples complements the red-hued girl really well, but it's a little faded. You should increase the contrast of the BG to correct that problem. The same thing goes for the avi. It has this "magazine scan" look to it. It was a cool effect idea, but the picture seems too faded now. If you could somehow keep that effect AND the picture's color, that'd be perfect. If it doesn't make sense, the quality of the girl in the banner is what I'm talking about. Notice how everything else, compared to that stock picture, appears faded. Hope that helps.
