1.
I wonder what the pro-life camp on OB thinks about contraception. Should it be promoted as a means of decreasing abortion, or should it be rejected as a means of stopping (and in some cases prematurely ending) the growth of a fetus?
There's a difference between stopping sperm from getting to egg and stopping a fertilized egg from getting to implant in the uterus. There are levels of contraception that stop life from existing and stop an existing life from being allowed to continue as a life. And I also resent being thrown into a camp that is labeled simply as "pro life." Like most things, there are degrees of people who are liberal and conservative, angry and not angry, okay with group politics and not okay with group politics.
2. Well OBVIOUSLY I'd have to find and pillage my dear husband Gavin. And then of course in no particular order, Shy, Indi, Vicky, and Korey. This is by no means a complete list, this is just what I'm thinking of right now as I have just woken up. Conversely, if a thread's content offends you Crimson Knight, you don't have to post in it saying you're not going to post concerning the obvious subject of the thread.

The Lottery

When Milo woke up, he opened his eyes to find Shali's breasts hovering inches from his face. At first he was inclined to believe he was dreaming, until he moved slightly and felt the bump on his head shoot lances of pain through his brain. He tensed up, only to feel Shali's hand stroking his cheek and the soft murmur of her voice reassuring him. "They picked me too Milo. It's okay, we'll be together." "W-W-...Why?" His eyes finally focused on her face, and he felt her hand squeezing his gently. "They probably want breeding pairs for wherever we're going. Now go back to sleep. It'll make your headache go away." Milo began to protest, when he felt her body shift against him and finally came to the realization that she had her back against the side of a wagon, and his head in her lap. Cradling him with her left arm, her right was the one moving across his arms and chest. And that sweet smell was the scent of the lavender sprigs she'd sewn into the folds of her skirts. Lulled by both that scent and the warmth of his wife's body, the knowledge that they would be together in spite of the Lottery, he slept. Shali leaned her head back, ignoring the jolting of the cart and sighed. The military escort was smaller, and Jeremy had departed from the company as soon as Shali's name had been called. She began to pick apart the frayed threads on one side of her skirt and pressed one hand against the small satchel she'd had time to pack. Her needles and threads were there along with her small silver knife, waiting to be used again. "Shali Strae." Her family hadn't cried and carried on. Instead they'd pointed frantically to Milo and she'd rushed to his side to catch him as he'd fallen. Milo's mother had pressed her bag into her hand, running to her house immediately after. She had kissed Shali's cheek and then rushed back to stand with her husband and their remaining children. Shali hadn't cried then, and now that she was still with her man, she couldn't cry now.
4. This may come as a terrible shock to you, but it doesn't remain a collection of cells for very long. By 21 days, a baby's heart is beating and even so, the mother might not even know she's pregnant. At 30 days the brain is developing and growing as are the lungs, arms, and legs. By the time most women are aware of their pregnancies, their unborn have everything that makes a fetus a baby. And the nice part about pregnancy is that it isn't eternal. 9 months. 1-2 days of labor, less if you're lucky or get a C-section. Abortion in and of itself can be a traumatic violent experience. If you've ever researched it or read medical journals, you'll know how it works. It can do long term damage to the woman's cervix and uterus and have untold ramifications on a woman's emotional and mental health. If a rape victim wants to terminate her pregnancy I won't be the one to say her nay. But you're sidestepping the issue here by only arguing for rape. And don't make bets when you don't know the odds first. In some cases, DNA in a baby can be traced to a father, and if the rapist was up till then not caught... Well I think you see what it can lead to. In other cases an abortion in a rape victim can just be her trying to hide or forget what happened to her instead of facing it. Study the cases first before making sweeping statements about it. Sidenote: if anyone would like to tell me that partial birth abortions are okay, please do it now so I know who should be added to the list of: "People that should never be allowed to have children."
5.
There is also the fact that half of all pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion anyway, usually without the woman ever realizing she was pregnant. What are people who believe life begins at conception to think then? Should every spontaneously aborted embryo be considered a murder?
That's ridiculous. These spontaneous abortions as a result of the female's body rejecting a foreign "not self" are not the result of a conscious decision. The body acting on its own without the input of the mind, or any logical thought process doesn't even fit the definition of murder.
6. Alert: Can of worms being opened yet again in the Lounge. SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING! Fetus: Baby. Unborn: Life: Preborn. Slice up the science any way you want, but when it's got its own heartbeat, its own fingers and toes, it's time to start considering that the blob you want to abort for the sake of your own convenience is actually alive. It has its own D.N.A., a unique clustering of genetic patterns that make it separate from the mother and the father as an individual. Am I crazy? Yes. Completely. I understand that rape is tragic, and that sometimes [and by sometimes I mean staggeringly low statistics still admit] the baby endangers the life of the mother. But while the mother has rights as individual to not be raped, murdered, etc, those same rights should be extended to the child growing inside the same mother. It's very easy to assume that in all cases of conception because of rape the mother will want to abort, but everyone is different. Every case is different, and it's impossible to know. I know that if my grandmother had decided my mother was worth aborting I wouldn't be here. If my sister and brother's birth mothers had decided to abort, they wouldn't be living with me. I believe abortion is wrong in the vast majority of cases where it's being pitched as the only option to young scared women. And also in the case where it's being used as a form of birth control. It is dangerous for the woman's health not to mention the side effect of another human life extinguished. Ask someone who has had an abortion what it was like after. Were there any physical or mental or emotional repercussions? This is a question nobody seems to care to ask, but I want to know. I have a uterus, I have an opinion, but it's mine, and I won't be trying to make it yours too.
7. Clearly the only thing left for you to do now is to obviously join me in a monastery or a nunary and practice the ancient arts of fighting and meditation and self introspection. .....it's the only way this nonsense will stop bothering us. And after we'll be strong enough to track down the imbeciles who were responsible for all of these various travesties and beat them all to near death, get a confession and a promise to never do it again, and then go out and enjoy life.
8. Note: look how it's billed. Notice that there is NOTHING on the doll itself to indicate an Islamic slant or any other such thing. It's billed as a cooing baby doll, not an Islamic cooing baby doll. And this is Matel, not Zondervan Publishing. Fisher Price to be precise. And think about it Malkav. The general population of America that would in fact be buying these dolls are Christians, as we still remain a nation that has that reputation and hence the market for a doll that said "Jesus Is Lord" would be fine. Only the doll is not being marketed to Muslims and Fisher Price's response to the outrage admits as much. Their stance is still: "IT IS MAKING COOING NOISES!" So we shouldn't even be hearing "--is the light" in the first place.
9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKahCRbWnkw Now setting aside that it's Fox News, you can simply google "islam is the light + baby" or doll, or any variant and get the soundbyte. What do you hear? I don't hear "Satan is King" but I do hear rather clearly "Islam Is The Light." Fisher Price - Mattel - has sent out a very lawyerly response to the vehement response from the general public. And while I'm okay with a doll that says that, my condition for being okay with it is when they come out with other dolls that say things like: "The Buddha speaks Truth" and "Jesus is the King of Kings." What do you think this means? If you think it was an accident or a snafu, explain the reasoning. If you think it was intentional, what possible motivation could a toy company have for distributing this doll across the entire nation at Target, Wal Mart, etc? Oh wait, I found the response from Mattel. Note the use of the word "scripted." Wahaha! Bingo.
10.
I'm surprised you didn't hear about this. Things are getting vicious. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/obama-death-threat-at-mccain-rally-sparks-probe/1330479.aspx
Wait, I did hear about this but I also heard just today that the probe went nowhere because there was nothing to be found. Simultaneously I've heard about death threats against Palin, which some weird inner sexist part of me views as more appalling than the assassination threat against a man. I don't remember the exact source, which is a shame, but I'm pretty sure that there was nothing to this death threat and also pretty sure that Palin and McCain didn't go: "THAT'S MY BOY!" Then again, they're only responsible for saying what they say, not what their base does. If they didn't endorse then plan and don't in fact endorse the death of the opponent then hey. Crazies are everywhere. That and I'm pretty sure the Obama campaign hasn't been perfectly squeaky clean either. The things said about Palin were blown so far out of proportion, or put entirely out of whack are just disturbing and a little confusing. Why the demented howling from the far left? She's just a woman politician, not a God. I'm not accusing Obama himself, but his campaign workers haven't all been shining examples of goodness and honor.
11.
I don't want to say I'm for Obama just because people I respect and admire are fully confident in him, or because I think Palin is the most bizarre, inappropriate choice for Vice President possible, or because I hate how smug and eager to interrupt McCain was last night, or because a sizeable portion of his base is calling for Obama's death and are still considered patriotic and loyal.
Death threats against Obama? This is new. I know that both parties will always have leaping screaming loonies on both ends of the spectrum, but if you can provide concrete evidence to that point I'd be interested in seeing it. And who is considering people who are advocating any political assassination patriotic? That's insane. I might think Obama is not right for the country but I don't want to see him get shot. I'd rather use the system than a bullet to press my point.
12.
First of all, I was being derisive about the fixing elections thing. Only Bush does that. And ACORN, really? Are you on McCain's payroll or do all of you conservatives just like repeating yourselves over and over and over and over again about things you're completely incorrect about. Of course that has been the staple of the McCain campaign, say a lie loud enough and maybe people will believe it. Barack was never an ACORN community organizer. ACORN never hired Obama as a trainer, organizer, or any type of employee. ACORN was not part of Project Vote, the successful voter registration drive Barack ran in 1992. Spreading false accusations and smear is unappealing and it makes you look petty.
Wow. Okay no. I am not on anybody's payroll but my own and you have personally repeated over and over your bias towards Obama and firm unshakable belief in the rightness of the polls you've shown me despite no real data to back it up. Furthermore, Bush is a moot point. He's halfway out the door anyway. If all you can parrot in return is talking points from Obama's 'fight the smears' website instead of researching for slightly more factual evidence then please kindly refrain from accusing me of being a mindless mouthpiece for the McCain campaign. If I was you would most likely have figured it out right away when I came out unequivocally in favor of McCain and everything he stands for. But since I haven't, and am just questioning your numbers and your lack of appropriate data I can only assume that you feel extremely threatened by someone who doesn't agree with you and can only get angry about it. Go figure. You shouldn't be calling me petty when you've already accused me of being a Republican when I've never claimed to be one nor identified with the Party, on McCain's payroll when I have yet to find any pro- McCain propaganda in my arsenal of opinions, and jokingly claimed that Bush fixes elections. Well if he fixed the elections, I suppose that does make him less of a moron than was previously believed.
13.
ikr. Forget Asian names, name this dog Bear.
Psh, why not go for Killer? I mean that's a nice respectable name that is also suitably ironic.
14.
And since when have elections carried the voice of the people. To my recollection if Republicans don't like the outcome they just fix the election.
Okay you can stop that right now. Go ask ACORN how they're going to get Mickey Mouse to the polls to vote. Go ask the guy who was registered to vote 70 times in exchange for cigarettes, or the 12 year old girl, or the 16 year old guy who was registered without his consent. It's all over the place. I've been approached several times on the college campus I go to by Obama volunteers who have tried to get me to register Democrat to vote for Obama. Every time I deny them, they tend to get offended, even when I just wander past them with a glazed expression on my face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mteMQh5zD0c And since I've heard the word "landslide" used way too much in various soundbytes from a variety of talking heads, I'm just parroting the media's current Obama slant. You're trying to tell me that after fixing an election, the Republicans were content to not control the media and let the majority of mainstream pundits trample all over Bush's administration instead of just silencing them?
15.
No. That particular group of people just voted in that fashion. My examples are simply showing that all of the polls agree.
But not to the degree that would indicate a landslide, and not with consistent figures. Again, we'd need margins of error, etc etc etc before knowing if all the polls are right to agree. Or you know, an actual election.
16. So CBS and CNN were just random hiccups? I don't know to be honest because you haven't included margins of error, sample sizes, and all the pertinent information that goes with those polls that you'd actually need before passing judgment. Don't get me wrong, I don't think ALL polls do this. And in fact the closer we get to the election certain pollsters like Zogby and Gallup start trying to get the numbers more accurate because they reaaaaally don't want another "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline to sink their business into the ground. But I have trouble agreeing with most polls run by news organizations because the majority of them have nothing to lose; their numbers are already ridiculously low. The same goes for exit polls on election day.
17. Well a "cute" name in Japanese usually starts with the Ch- prefix. I.e. Chiri, Chiki, and Charie! I think Chikiri would be a cute name for that little fuzzball.
18. I'm sorry to say that I don't think I was trolling. And I believe the evidence supports me when I say that polls consistently over sample those of a more liberal persuasion. It'd be my opinion and right to state that the polls numbers are being cooked by the people putting them out there. And I never said McCain was my guy. In fact that's ridiculous to assume that the majority of Republicans [and I am not even a Republican] are believing in McCain as the party's guy. We know he's a maverick, we know he will only listen to us because he knows we're the only ones that can put him in a position of power, and we also know that this is ridiculous. He's the right wing base's first choice. Don't think that I'm simply spewing brouhaha. And that "likely voter" thing is just a phrase pollsters use to make themselves feel better. The margins of error, the actual sample sizes and whatnot are not done with an unbiased by the majority of pollsters. Additionally, the number of people who hang up on these calls is never reported, but it's an extremely large group of people. I used to do polling at my college. I can't even begin to list the number of people that hung up on me when I asked them questions about administrative policy. This election has been fried, roasted, rehashed, and barbecued repeatedly in threads on OB. All I'm saying is that it's pretty clear where most of the people who are actually old enough to vote on OB stand.
19. Ah but remember, polls consistently oversample Democrats and otherwise unoccupied people that still pick up land line phones. Most Republicans never get polled properly because a: they're all busy working and b: Hence they aren't home to pick up the phone anyway. Well it's the same point but it's hard to point out that inconvenient fact when discussing polls. Oversampling, biased questions, push poll questioning etc, it all happens with polls regardless. But even so, I'm not going to be able to say either way. And as far as who I'm voting for, if you can't surmise that from previous posts I've made on the numerous topics involving the politics of the nation, then alas. You'll just have to guess.

21.
I don't think anybody now peddles the Holocaust fairy tale by the way - I think most people are pretty clear about why the United States got involved in the first place. I don't think that changes the reality that it was an involvement that had to happen sooner or later.
Oh ooh I know someone who does! Actually wait, no. I know TWO people who do! Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and David Duke. Granted both are total loonies, but both get air time. Both get face time. And there's not much to be done about it except to marginalize. Which brings me to my point about terrorism. An actual way to defeat terrorists is to marginalize them, much in the same way the KKK has been marginalized in America along with racists and bigots who have crossed the line from just being annoying to being ridiculous. Take the Reverend Wright for example. Why else would Obama switch pastors? Except to cover his own political rear end. BUT ANYWAY. Wait, now that's three people... I agree with you James on the points you've made, only we're still in Japan and we're still in Germany. We're also still in Kuwait, Kosovo, Bosnia, and South Korea. We never leave any place once we get there. People should know this by now.

The Lottery

Shali had just finished embroidering the last rose in a long line of borders at the corners of the sheets when Jeremy Hampton came swaggering into the shop front of her home. She felt the same sort of weariness upon seeing him as she'd always had, even when they were children and he'd flirted hopelessly with her. Nowadays he only showed up to torment her or her husband. Only torment was too strong a word. He was so immature he probably didn't even- "Heeeeeyy.... How you doing?" Gently setting down the final set of sheets she looked up at him, one hand under her expansive apron. She gently reached for the craft needles she kept in one of her back pockets under the folds of her skirt and kept her tone calm and conversational. "I'm working on the last set of sheets for the Monoda family." "Shouldn't you take a break? I mean you have time." Shali kept her eyes on him instead of glancing towards the position of the sun like she knew he wanted her to. Then she turned back to him with a sweet smile while her fingers closed around the edges of the largest needles she worked with. Holding them between her fingers, both of them pointing outwards just slightly, she waited until he put a hand on her left arm. Then she whirled her hand up from under her skirts and slammed her fist down on his, the needles sinking deep into the flesh. Her voice thickened into a snarl. "Don't you dare touch me ever again. If you do I will sew your lips together, perforate your asshole, and stitch your penis to your balls." In a wrenching motion, she jerked the needles from his hand, the puncture wounds welling up just a little blood. Shali picked up her embroidery once more and refused to look at his shocked face, the indignation mingled with the horrible pain. He ran out the door and she went back to her work, getting up now and then to stir the hasty pudding that they would be taking to the celebration. Then, just before Milo came home, she took off her apron, folded up the sheets, and got out the skirt she'd put blue threads into. Tying it around her hips, she whipped the sash around and tied it in a square knot. Then she pulled back her hair and pinned it back with the bone styluses Milo had whittled for her while was out in the fields. When Milo came in, she turned and kissed him gently before he could say a word, even though she saw the anger on his face. When she pulled away his words spilled out before she could stop them. "Did Jeremy come in here? Did he touch you? Did he say any-" She put a finger to his lips and then kissed him again, reassuring him with her body first. "I put my needles into his hand. He won't get you through me. Never." Milo's face went through a variety of changes before he allowed her words to sink in. Then she held out his evening jacket, one she'd put lines of interlace across and helped him into it. Taking one end of their cauldron, she gestured at the other end and the two heaved it up and across the threshold of their house, headed for the courtyard of Orsys. Setting their contribution down, Shail began ladling out the pudding as people held bowls out to her while Milo went out to bring back their share of lamb and vegetables from the others.
23. Mrs. Young was standing at the far window, watching the outbuildings, watching her adopted children running back into the house, shrieking with fear, running with purpose, their heads a mishmash of frightened thoughts. She took another hit, exhaled slowly, and breathed the smoke out far enough to give her a halo when she tilted her head just right. "Guess it's all up to me after all." Eros pulled his rifle in, reloaded, and jerked down his window, setting the kevlar blinds and locking the bolts behind them. Carol slammed the door behind her and pulled down the iron barriers that they'd reclaimed from burned out convenience stores that weren't using them anymore anyway. Korey looked up in surprise as Grace quickly jerked down the ones over every exposed window and door. The bolts were thrown and they stood for a few minutes, merely breathing hard. "Did you steal those fro-" "7/11." Carol calmly began filling one of her purses with what looked like packets of razor blades in plastic cases. She turned to him and flicked a couple between her fingers, catching them and swirling one on the pad of her first finger. "We can withstand quite a bit of abuse when we go on lockdown. It's happened before you know." "You're kidding me." Grace began reloading and strapping what looked like a bandolier across her waist. "Nope. Happened just last week." The dogs began pacing in the foyer and then Carlotta sat and looked up at the window just above the door. Grace looked up with her, then took a running start across the living room and did a handspring back onto the staircase, landing on one of the banisters. She stared at it one more time, blinked twice, and leapt upwards, twisting her body forward, catching herself on the windowsill. She put her legs on either side of the wall and pushed herself up, locking herself in place. Then she twisted one arm back and gestured at Carol. "Point of entry if they get past the first line." "Line?" Carol opened her laptop on the kitchen table and began to type. Korey looked over her shoulder and saw the floorplan of the house highlighted in red and green. She pointed to lines around the property. "First line of defense isn't what you just saw. That was just us putting out feelers." "YOU KNEW WHAT TH-" Carol held up a hand that combined both power with absolute serenity. She continued in a voice so calm it soothed the dogs who finally stopped pacing As she spoke she tossed up a metal plate to Grace, who flicked over to Jennifer's raw strength and caught it in a quick movement before slapping it up against the window. "We wanted to see what you could do. We already knew what Grace could do." Korey stared blankly while Carol did a little typing and then snapped the laptop shut again. "We have about two hours to go. We'll be able to use that time to both prep the escape hatch in the basement and see how the house holds up." "You're kidding me. This can't be happening. This is a crazy house." Carol tilted her head at him and for a moment he watched about ten different colors flash over her eyes before they went back to normal. Grace dropped down from where she was and strolled back into the kitchen. "Now he notices."
24. In her private room, Graie gently finished unlacing the ribbon from the ringed piercings and set it back on its spool. She turned and let Thorn sponge off her back, flinching only a little, and not for the reasons most humans flinch when he pressed down on the torn flesh. She carefully changed the rings on her nipple piercings and adjusted the angle of her navel piercing. Thorn meticulously began to wipe down every individual strand of his flogger when the door creaked, announcing a presence just at the threshold. Algolangia twitched once in Graie's mind and she turned immediately to her chair and swirled a gauzy length of silk across her bare chest, tying it off between her shoulder blades. She gave Thorn a quick nod and he opened the door as the boy they knew to be Stretch stood, his arm out in preparation to knock. He recoiled immediately when fixed with an utterly inhuman glare from Algolangia and he almost felt himself flinching. "My mistress would like to meet you if you have some time to spare for Her." His voice was a moist thickening of consonants, made thicker by the variety of metal rings and studs in and around his mouth. Graie looked up at him from where she was sitting and abruptly let the knot loosen, pushing it down around her hips, low enough for the line that marked the beginning of her thighs to appear. He stammered a little when she drew an impossibly long tongue across her lips and severely pointed incisors. Then he recovered when he immediately shifted his gaze over to Thorn, who had put on a loose flowing blouse, covering up the shallow scratch marks Graie had given him in thanks. "Tell Her to come see me in the Windsor room when she's ready. My next show is in three hours." "Really?! I-I-I was...." Painslut hissed at him, a layered sound and he felt something crackling and popping in his ears. He fled and the door slammed behind him without his touching it. Graie reasserted herself and ran a brush through her hair, pulling snarls out from where Thorn had tangled it with his fingers. She sighed and twisted the locks into individual strands, looping them around casually until they began to twist on themselves. Thorn held up hair ties for her and she began to tie little bows with the silk thread, then went back to cleaning his floggers. She stood and began to wrap her fingers and wrists with black bondage tape, making sure to leave enough room to wiggle her fingers, but not enough to keep them from staying almost in the same positions. Thorn leaned over to help her tie off the strands with square knots. "So you're really going to meet with Thalia? Sin?" "Are you worried that I can't take her? Everything she do to me will be every stimulation I've ever inflicted upon myself, only intensified." "You think she'll hurt you?" "I don't think she'll be able to control herself." He looked down into her eyes and for a moment he saw a brief flicker of the Fallen within her. Instantly Graie suppressed it and gave Algolangia a quick jerk to remind her who she would and wouldn't show off in front of Thorn. Algolangia muttered in the back of her mind in a slightly rebellious whisper, until Graie took a hold of one of her piercings and gave it a wrench to the right. Immediately the muttering was replaced by a long low sigh, and Graie turned back to Thorn with a peaceful expression, so laconic it was almost Zen. "We'll be just fine. But your concern is sweet." Thorn gave her a slight frown, quickly replaced when she rose up on her knees to give him a gentle kiss on the cheek. Without breathing too hard, she adjusted the buttonfly jeans she'd taken to wearing when not performing and walked down into the basement of the Birdcage, where the Windsor room was standing ready. Thorn stayed just outside the door, waiting while she primly knelt on the raised wooden platform in one of the several corners of the room. Letting her eyes roll back in her head, she tossed her neck from side to side and felt Algolangia twitch in her mind.
