Granted, breaking down crying every night when you do your homework because you don't understand it is probably not the best way to operate, either.
Oh bah, it got me through high school somehow. Of course the irony is that one day when I realized my mother had suddenly stopped bugging me about studying I actually did better. *twilight zone music* I suppose my gripe about self esteem is when people use it as a way to coddle children into thinking they can just think well of themselves and be great people. I believe, like so few people these days, that true self esteem can come from real achievement. Like scoring high on an exam or getting a job because your resume was actually not comprised of lies.
  2. It's occurred to me lately that in America, there's an enormous push to raise the self esteem of our current generation of children. Somehow people believe that if children feel "better" about themselves then somehow they'll do better in classes. Now this might be true for some people, but compare international math test scores between America and South Korea. American children foolishly believed they had done well and South Korean children thought they'd utterly failed. Of course the reverse was true because South Koreans typically spend more time studying and less time watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. He was lying when he said you're special just for being you. Am I wrong? Did you do well in classes when you thought you were the latest boy genius? Or did you think you were failing all the time but in reality doing well? I had a harsh Chinese mother that kicked my butt repeatedly for getting Bs instead of As. So I thought I was a bad student until I looked around and realized I was the only one who cared that I was doing well. How tragic. Here's the link for the study. 4. No dear, you don't want your relationship back, because as we've already discussed, you are still miserable about the last break up you just had. How many weeks ago? Rebound. Rebound. Rebound. I say again, it might seem like a relationship in which you have a chance to forge good from an unhappy past but while this might sound ridiculously pompous [and it is], I don't think you're ready. Consider leaving off this kind of romantic thought, because while I'm sure you desperately want to have someone special in your life right now, you're still developing mentally and physically and will continue to do so for several years at least. Leave off the romantic hearts and flowers and pleasant warm fuzzy feelings until you're finished going through puberty.
  5.
I'm not familiar with the concept of a confirmation name. Does it have any significance beyond the ceremony? For the record, my favorite female Biblical character is Jael (click). She killed an enemy captain with a tent peg and won a war. Pretty impressive woman.
And this was after lulling him with a massive dinner and milk and honey. Deviousness I say! Let's see, there's Rahab, but she's a prostitute. Although she IS an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Ruth, but she laid down at the feet of Boab to trick him into thinking he'd accidentally consummated the marriage she was trying to get into. And Esther, but she had sex with that naughty Xerxes. He was bad. At least if you believe 300. I have a close female friend whose confirmation name is Celeste, and while it's out of date I recommend naming yourself after one of the sacred virtues. I.e. Grace, Charity, Love, Hope. Slightly cooler than the other ones.

There's a fun list of saints you can find with a google search that should help narrow the field a bit, since my favorite thus far has to be St. Anselem.

  9. Linnett's thoughts turned outward, and for the first time, encased in ice, her eyes opened. She blinked very slowly in the darkness of half twilight, and then her eyes closed once more. She sighed, unaware of the passage of time, even though it had been fifty years since her dreaming had begun. The stories had stretched themselves endlessly, growing thin. Unlike the other vampires that had slept around her, she did not have centuries of past memories to pull into her dreams. If she could've leaned back casually, she would. Instead she blinked again, and her movement attracted the first of the vampires to awaken. Dahler, not from the same clan as her, but the same strain of vampire, strolled casually across the frozen wasteland to her tomb. He slipped under the crevice that contained her body and stood in front of her, his face inches from the ice block that held Linnett immobile. Dahler smiled at the girl, a prize indeed in times like these. Not only was she clearly a wild child, her brothers had stopped coming around to see if she was still resting. He put one slim finger against the ice and pressed gently. Immediately it cracked all around her and Linnett found herself standing, leaning against the ice wall and staring into blood red eyes that most definitely did not belong to anyone she knew. Immediately, she jerked back, only to slam against the wall behind her and the pain came as a surprise. While she had dreamed she hadn't felt any physical pain, just memories of mental anguish that were nothing like this. Dahler smirked and advanced until his nose was almost touching hers. Over two thousand years of arrogance and hatred glowed in his voice, and Linnett could hear her father in him. "Little girl, woken up before her time. You should've slept longer. It would've kept you safe from me for longer." "If I was only going to be attacked by you when I woke up, then what's the point of hoping it would be prolonged?" "A judicious question." Linnett's eyes flashed a hawk's gold, and she snarled, revealing the fangs Dahler somehow knew were hiding behind her pale silver lips. Not every wild child had the enormous fangs, but thus far she was proving a textbook example. Although, like every wild child he'd ever seen before, she moved completely erratically, dodging his attacks in unconventional ways, displaying an initiative he hadn't seen in the past ones. It would explain why she was put to rest instead of kept near the clan. That same clan of course was now utterly destroyed, not that either knew, but Dahler had an inkling anyway. He inhaled her scent as he dodged a vicious backhanded swipe from her, the claws on her fingers nearly shredding apart his robe. She seemed completely self aware, and the way she'd spoken to him earlier meant that she was at least several degrees removed from the typical completely insane child born to two vampires. Someone had either taught her to ape normal vampyric ways, or she had evolved on her own. Higher consciousness was supposed to be impossible, but the way she timed her attacks and used her power effectively made him wonder just what he had set free. In a pincer movement, he caught her by both wrists in one enormous hand and pulled her upwards until she was several inches above the ground. Instead of kicking at him and putting strain on her wrists, she relaxed her arms and let herself dangle, pushing her head forward slightly to look closer at him. "You've very odd little girl. You smell like a wild child. You have the fangs of one. But you aren't in a blood frenzy." "I countered your attacks. And you weren't completely rude to me. It's easier to stay calm that way. And I'm hungry. I can't waste power I don't have." "Too true. And the other vampires will sleep forever if we step lightly around them." He dropped Linnett, and she landed more or less on her feet, her wrists crackling slightly. She looked up at him and narrowed her eyes for a moment. No visible marks, just pale skin and dark hair. European eyes, probably close to the Dynn family, and he smelled like her father. She didn't recoil right away, but held herself still. Attacking him now, after not feeding for so long would be suicide. She'd never been able to put a mark on her father, and she most likely couldn't do it now either.
  10. Manjusra's phone buzzed and she picked it up automatically flicking through the text. The loa's departure had finally ceased to make her shiver and suffer, and now she could focus on the future troubles. Like the fact that Loa Ama had come to her specifically to both tell her the future and tell her what the future shouldn't be. She sighed and typed out a swift response to Thom. "Check your fucking e-mail dumbshit. We're wanted in the South Town. Something big is coming for us, gunning for us. We're kine again. And don't call me ghostie. Drunkie." She stood up and found her boots lying in a corner, pulling them over her jeans, she laced the threads automatically. Mentally she calculated the risks of flying in an airplane to New Orleans and how much sun exposure it would mean. While her body was adapted to deal with extreme temperatures, she didn't really like the thought. But no real problems that couldn't be dealt with. And the Messengers would help, or think about it anyway. She grabbed her heavier coat and pulled the hood deep over her head, nearly eclipsing her entire face. Snatching her weapons from the counter she dodged the door and kicked the lock in place from behind, following the path she'd outlined for Chase. Knowing him he would be going straight for the Ghast, get his ass kicked, and get up and try again. But this time the headaches came on faster than the last time. The Ghast couldn't have moved that far on purpose, which meant that the damn loa was right and instead he was just getting stronger. His blast radius increasing. It meant a world of pain if she stepped closer. But it was also coming from Jax. .......why was he here anyway? Chase too. She closed her eyes for a moment to collect herself. "I hate you all. I'll always hate you for this." Mouthing the words of her mantra, rolling them in her head, she began to use it to focus her thoughts further. "Om A Ra Pa Cha Na Dhīh." As she thought the words, she felt an incorporeal spirit brush past her, sending a wave of pure panic in its wake. Focus disrupted, she swatted angrily with one hand, pushing it to one side. Again, whenever she tried to focus, to brand the Ghast, it happened again. Finally, Manjusra lost her temper and slammed both of her hands into the ground from a crouching position and screamed the incantation instead, the edge blasting through several spirits at once. "Om A Ra Pa Cha Na Dhīh you fucking bastards!" The brand, shaped like the Third Eye soared across space, invisible to the human eye, and plastered itself on the Ghast's face, glowing white. Jax paused for a moment, looking over his shoulder. There was only one hunter he knew that could send a brand like that, and only one who would make it take such a shape. He grinned and thumbed another cartridge.
  11. No, but you didn't make it very clear and expecting us to divine the entire story from one copied aim conversation is relatively unhelpful. If he's so distressingly foolish as to want to actually try drugs, you might as well let him. If you can't point out all the things that could go wrong: altered mental state, sudden anaphylatic reactionary shock, coma. And if he doesn't figure that you might be onto something there, then don't waste your time. What help could you possibly need?

    Zelda: The Lost War

Egalia sighed and finished wrapping up a small packet of ergot and slippery elm bark for one of the local prostitutes that wasn't too proud to come to her. These kinds of things were somewhat sketchy, but if things went wrong, Egalia could always repair the damage with magic. Touchy business but rents had to be paid, and bills were always present. She closed the shop door, locked it and set down the bar behind it, then pulled down the rattan shades over the two windows. Shuffling a few papers on her counter, the cats purred and mewled, twining themselves around her ankles, excited about the prospect of her feeding them now that work was done. Lugging the enormous boar's head behind her, the bits and pieces Shiek had left for her wrapped securely in her apron pocket, Egalia headed down the stairs towards her basement and laboratory where all of her best work was done. Setting down the head on a worktable, she turned towards the jugs that lined the back wall and tipped a prodigious amount of milk into the saucers for the cats, all six immediately converging on the saucer like she'd set off an alarm. "Drink up little ones, I'll need you later." This kind of spell was best done at midnight, but the preparation for one of the more forbidden spells in the land was extremely long. The boar's blood would be useful when dried in the extensive and all purpose magic circle she'd taken the time to carve into the stone floor. Some people laughed at her. What use after all would a white and blue mage have for such a huge thing? It wasn't portable and it wasn't very useful for anything but enormous spells. But the dirty little secret was that Egalia could both use it with a minimal amount of effort, and that her six cats could help her channel the power to make it look simple. The boar's head, still containing an excellent amount of blood, she slashed open in several places with the ritual silver knife she'd picked up from a very handy set of smiths down the way. The blood gouted and swelled, pouring into the cracks of the magic circle, a pain to clean, but useful in their own way. She pulled down packets and crocks from the shelves that lined the walls of her workroom, placing them on her table, before consulting with one of the enormous tomes that lay open. She lit several candles as she passed by with a fingertip, the torches flaring to life when she narrowed her eyes and snapped her fingers at each one. "Now, divinity, divination, diversity, no there it is." She picked up her quill and ink pot, and began marking measurements on a parchment spread out and weighed with river rocks she'd marked with runes for the occasion. Copying down the recipe was painless enough, if tedious as most of it was in the Old Language and thus necessarily translated. 2 vials containing essences of rat saliva 1 cake of dried spider's blood 3 sprinkles of verbenna 6 pinches of dried rubarb 10 stirs with the left hand 8 with the right Pour into a silver basin as the moon wanes and look to see what you would see. "Well could be worse. At least there's no ritual sacrifice at the end like these things used to demand." She set down her pen and picked up the ingredients. Most spells like this took forever to get just right but could last for days. And since she had a full night and day to finish up, and didn't want to have to deal with more of it tomorrow when customers would be coming around... Might as well finish grinding with the mortar and pestle and get down to business.
  16. Once upon a time, a time where security was lax everywhere it should've been rigid and rigid everywhere it should be lax there was an island. Not The Island, that was already taken. But this was an island with steel and sheet rock and rebar and granite and many cliffs leading straight down into the ocean beneath. It was only reachable by helicopter, and the landing pad was so sheer that it was necessary to rappel down the side of the landing pad just to reach the ground. This island was known as the Battle Island, and dedicated viewers saw what happened there through the thousands of cameras hidden across the entire rock. Some days it would be children pitted against children, men against women, women against men, but some days it would be everyone against everyone else. And the war of all against all was very simple. Everyone was fitted with iron collars that kept them within bounds or instantly dead. Everyone could find the weapons scattered across the compounds and use them until they broke or ran out of ammunition or both. And everyone would die. The helicopters dropped the people in groups. Their names floated above their heads to the people watching eagerly on their TVs and computers. Allamorph, Boo, Aaryanna, Darren, Ikillion, Korey. The first group arrived and were kept blindfolded and handcuffed, the collars already in place. The second group, Clurr, Sunfall, Rach, Sandy, Petie, Indi. They too were dropped down, after an appropriate time, the handcuffs unlocked themselves, leaving their hands free to rip off their blindfolds and look around. Nobody ever knew when they would be grabbed by the Establishment to go the the Battle Island, but they'd been told it would be all against all. Alliances were quickly broken or never even formed. The innate distrust was perfect, and anyone who did not pick up a weapon and fight were killed. "Kill or be killed. The fights began faster than people had expected. Allamorph was the first to make a kill, his weapon of choice a katana. Dressed in a simple black jumpsuit, he found Ikillion an easy target, having only turned to pick up the weapon he had literally tripped over. The second to kill was Indi, her fencing saber already pulled free of Sandy's back. Dishonorable, but nobody kept track of that. Instead, they noticed the blinding speed with which Petie cut through the people that hadn't armed themselves fast enough, or came at him with murder in their eyes. Clurr, Rach, Boo, Korey, all fell quickly under Petie's broadsword. Perhaps it was the sheer hatred in his eyes that kept them fearful. But then again he too fell, stabbed through the neck, down towards the heart when Allamorph took him off guard. Aaryanna lasted a surprisingly long time, her butcher knife doing enough to keep her alive against Darren, his guts spilling out for others to slip on. Indi followed her from a safe distance, both capable of hiding, both capable of killing. Sunfall died early on when she refused to pick up a weapon to use against her fellow human beings, no matter what they did to others of their own kind. And the collar's death was the worst. It tightened slowly instead of just breaking the neck or slashing open the heart. Others could see she was dying, but it was too late. Interfering would've killed them too. It came to a point where Allamorph simply couldn't find the remaining survivor. Indi was watching him, still holding her saber in one hand so the collar wouldn't kill her, but charging head on would be suicide, just as staying still would too. The collar would know if she sat for just a moment. So she paced just out of his line of sight, which mean he was out of hers as well. Finally, as she felt herself growing tired, he charged, and her response was immediate. The two paused, seconds from slitting eachother's throats, both of their right arms poised and crossing, the point of the katana curving towards the bottom of Indi's chin, her saber tickling the point where his two clavicles met. For a few moments they stood, their feet shuffling slightly, breathing heavily at the strain of not pushing forward and killing themselves along with their opponent. Then something twitched in the back of Indi's mind, and from the corner of her eye she could see Aaryanna's body sprawled across the uneven terrain. She lunged, piercing herself on the end of Allamorph's katana, shoving forward with the last of her strength, hurling to her death. As both fell, their hands dangling loosely at their sides, their collars fell from their necks and the lights went out. "All clean up crews to your assigned stations. In the morning the Battle Island would be reset, and the newest batch of unfortunates would be eaten alive by the monster in the human mind.

  21. Manjusra methodically washed the dishes, a towel tucked into the waistband of her jeans. She was glad Chase had come in, and she would punch Beartalker the next time he visited and let him have the job of explaining the fractured jaw to his wife. She set the dishes on the rack and went to the bedroom, hanging up the towels she and Chase had carelessly dropped on the floor. Everything set back into place, she found her jeans thrown up against the bookshelf and her shirt just under that. The benefit of not being an active hunter meant that she didn't stink up her clothing too often. A hood from a light jacket pulled over her eyes, she sat at the computer desk, trawling the pages and blogs of hunters just to ensure nothing new and horrible was about to happen. And then the e-mail came. Manjusra leaned forward slightly in her chair, a finger pressed to her lips in preparation for the headache that was sure to descend in the form of either the Messengers or some other horrible revelation. Instead she found herself slightly irritated at the pompous tone of the missive. Cattle? Sure some were eaten, but to most of the demons and monsters, they were hardly kine. Of course the way some of her fellow Hunters charged blindly into battle made her wonder if the unknown sender really did have a point. Manjusra added her response to the thread discussing it, which was mostly filled with angry blustering about why other Hunters shouldn't just come too. "Remember, we are men and not beasts to be herded. To oblige this unknown sender we must obey his rules for he would not make idle threats. Old world rules still withstanding, it's best to do it his way as much as it rankles. Any Hunter I see approaching the coordinates that wasn't listed will be pointed out and brought down. We are not Kine." She hesitated before hitting reply, wondering if the unknown sender would laugh at her. But the hell with it. Manjusra hadn't spent her life being pushed around more than a bit. In fact, she was ready to take this to the end. The Thing must've known she could only get so close. Perhaps with enough sight she could save herself. And see what would be. The doorbell rang and Manjusra jumped slightly. Pulling her hood down further and picking up the gun on the way, she paused to collect herself, then opened the door and found herself staring into the eyes of a badly wounded Chase. "The Ghast might be following me! Let me in!" "You went for it yourself? Why? I told you how strong it was." Chase shuddered and shivered, bleeding from half a dozen wounds, and Majusra let her eyes flicker over his form, just for a moment. Then she pulled back and let him in across the threshold, leading him into the living room, the Mauser by her side, loose in one hand. When she beckoned him to sit at the table, he suddenly jerked back when he noticed Manjusra had leveled the weapon at him and was glaring through narrowed eyes. "Name yourself ghost." "Loa Ama. I appeared in this form to get your attention, although it seems you saw right through it. I should've known you of all people would've." "Don't fuck with my head. You're a loa, you're supposed to be beneficial." "This is a small portion of what could happen to your paramour because of the Ghast. What you Saw was only a fraction of the real thing. Flickering shadows thrown on a wall." Moving around, always keeping her back away from the loa now inhabiting the body of Chase, Manjusra reached for the tin of chewing tobacco on top of the refrigerator and set it down on the table, across from the loa. It took a handful and chewed, spitting it down across the floor like some kind of baseball player. She narrowed her eyes and took a step forward, when the loa held up a hand, gesturing for peace. "Be careful Watcher. That message you received today. I'm sure you can divine its true meaning in time. But remember, you truly are Kine. Every one of you." Without another sound, Loa Ama was gone. No whirling smoke, no cloud of dust, just gone. The tobacco juice went with it, and Majusra set down the gun with a sigh of relief. Loa in her house was a rare occurrence and when it did happen she either had to clean up the corpse it left behind or work at controlling herself for several minutes after. In this case, Manjusra sank to the ground, breathing hard, forcing herself to calm down.

  25. Manjusra luxuriated in her bed, rolling over to the spot Chase had vacated, curling up in the warm dent still left in her pillows. Hearing him come back in, she waited until he was in the shower after fiddling with the dials for slightly longer than she'd expected, then pulled herself out of bed and slipped in behind him, pushing the water warmer with her left foot curled around his side. He let himself relax again, feeling her body curving up against his, even if her head only came partway up his chest. Turning, he leaned down to give her a kiss on her upturned face, barely visible in the partial light of her bathroom. LIke her bedroom, it was illuminated by downward turned nightlights, which he could only guess made shaving complicated. Not that he typically did but why on earth was he thinking such idiotic thoughts anyway? Oh yes, to distract himself from the small female currently sidling past him in an utterly sensual way, reaching for the shampoo with delicate outstretched- She turned to him, only her silhouette visible and with her hair full of suds, she watched him with one of her eyes while the other had suds run over the lid. "You want to go see the Ghast today, don't you?" "How did you-" "Well it's obvious. You're trying to focus on work so you aren't distracted any more by me." Chase managed a sheepish grin, which Manjusra inferred, rather than saw. After all, she might be able to see in partial darkness better than him, but that didn't mean she cared to strain herself when it was only 4 in the morning. Fifteen minutes later, Chase was still standing in the shower while Manjusra wrapped a towel around her waist and picked up another from the adjacent linen closet for him. He came back into her bedroom, about to ask her about the Ghast's location when he noticed she was kneeling at the shrine again, still wrapped in her towel, with her fingers pressed together solemnly. Feeling like he was intruding, he slipped backwards into the kitchen and waited for her to finish, pouring himself a glass of water as he did. Five minutes later, fully dressed, Manjusra came back out, pulling the disparate strands of her hair into smaller braids, twisting them around quickly so they wrapped over themselves and smiled up on him. "Morning again. Would you like some breakfast?" "Er, just a beer?" "What kind of hostess would I be if I let my guest have beer for breakfast?" Chase opened his mouth for a reply when she snatched up an apple from the fruit bowl and popped it into his mouth, catching on his teeth. He chewed while she turned to the stove and began mixing cream of wheat, sifting in cornmeal with her fingers. He sat down at the table when she pointed and gave him a look over one shoulder and while she set down a beer, a bowl of cream of wheat, and a fat jar of honey, he couldn't help but wonder if she was this nice to all of her house guests. Not that a girl like her would get many.
