I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!!! I suck at life. Been so busy with school and all. But for realz, expect a post tonight! EDIT: ...And fail! (I'm working on the post right now though. Hopefully by tonight!)
All kidding aside, I know you're super busy Darren so take your time. :whoops: As it stands now the Church group should be arriving at the Vosper Summit, with the Anovans some distance behind. I'll likely be writing the introduction post to Vosper, I just want to talk to Sunfall or Rach first. The Czenovians haven't even left yet, but if someone wants to handle that feel free. We haven't gotten a formal introduction to Harrison's commanding officer... have we? -Shy

I look forward to losing to Anomaly, but it should be fun. Let's do this thing! -Run

Hurm. I'm gonna get rambly. Spoiler warning. This was an interesting creative exercise. Having read the book it's difficult not to watch it and think about all of the bits that were left out. You grow up with certain ideas of what a film would look like, and if you're like me you've openly dreaded the prospect of this movie being made. Still, Snyder did a competent job of recreating the original comic in the most accurate way possible. Although I appreciated Snyder's attention to detail Watchmen also showcases his weaknesses as a filmmaker. The things that 'worked' had nothing to do with him at all, and were a testament to the real 'visionaries' of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons two decades ago. Snyder's only signature on this are the exaggerated slow-motion action/sex scenes, and a handful of shallow performances throughout. Conversely, it's his willingness to preserve the source material at all costs that let Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach truly shine. So I dunno... mixed bag. I actually liked Malin Ackerman in this as Silk Spectre II. My biggest issue with her is that the attempt to recreate certain sequences cut-for-cut from the comic ultimately leave her most important dramatic sequences flat. Were she given a complete, continuous shot to actually emote there might be fewer complaints. Just as Dr. Manhattan struggled with his growing distance to humanity so does Laurie. All of the characters are really, and I think you see that in the performances. The stuff that everyone liked I also liked. Dr. Manhattan works well. He is just as iconic and powerful figure on film that he was within the confines of a panel grid. Billy Cruddup does a remarkable job, and he adds just the sliver of compassion necessary for his relationship with Laurie to work. Jackie Earle Haley gives the best performance of the bunch as Rorschach. I'm pretty terrified by how well the audience reacted to him. I'm sure Alan Moore will find a lot of humor in that his right-wing psychopath is destined to become a folk hero. Visually this is a treat. I did not get the chance to watch it on IMAX last night but undoubtedly I will soon. There are so many minor details and visual clues throughout the film; yes all of them were lifted from the graphic novel but they are pretty. The Mars sequence was every bit as beautiful as I hoped it would be. There are a lot of things that didn't work, though. The political stuff was only lightly touched on, but without the ancillary material presented in the comics most of it falls on deaf ears. Things like the Keane Act are alluded to, but due to the reliance on flashbacks it is difficult for moviegoers to completely understand the timeline. The original Silk Spectre's story suffers quite a bit due to time constraints, and her complicated relationship with Laurie is never fully realized. Also the mystery isn't as compelling as it was in the book, simply because the mystery was created for a different medium entirely. Small visual clues that can be studied and picked apart by a comic book reader fly by so fast on screen that the audience is unable to catch them. This, combined with the episodic nature of the story make the film feel even longer and more tangential than it already is. Only in the conclusion does everything tie together, but it's too late for most people to care. In my showing several people walked out during the first 90 minutes, and these were people who were enthusiastic enough to see it on a midnight screening. The ending? Well, it makes sense in the confines of the story. As many have mentioned explosions simply don't carry the dramatic weight they once did on screen, and as a result the conclusion feels underwhelming. This is a cleaner final solution than the original. The shock and awe isn't there, and given the main characters' distance from 'reality' it's impossible to care through their reactions to what has unfolded. Quite frankly I miss the squid. This film will ultimately appease the vocal fanboys, but what we end up with is a long, polarizing movie that feels like a poor xerox of the original. The major bits and pieces are there exactly as they were on the page, just something is lost in the reproduction. -Run

I knew I was forgetting someone who helped with the banners, and that person is Korey. I'm sorry Korey. I'm a bad person. You and your banners are awesome. Thank you. I love you. -Shy

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Shy replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I wanted to be King of OtakuBoards and 8 years later I'm still waiting.... But yes, when I was in the first grade I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer. I don't know how this came about specifically, but somehow I decided that smart people have to be one of those two things when they grew up. Blood has always grossed me out, so there was only one choice. It also didn't help that Jessie from Saved by the Bell went into law school when they 'graduated' on the show. Thank goodness I didn't learn about 'Showgirls' until years later, or else I probably would have tried to become a dancer. -Shy -
Thanks again to everyone for their involvement, especially Boo, Korey, Indi, Vicky and Adam. You guys did a great job with the banners. Cheers!
OB’s Official Funtime Thread of Humor and Mirth "Well isn't that just like Ace to nominate his own creation without a single thought. No, but seriously. I can't take all or even most of the credit for this thread. Everyone pitched in to make it the epic archive of win and funny it is today. It's lost steam since its creation, but this little thread's still truckin' along, miraculously being revived without too much effort before too long every time. Funny will always exist on the internet, and I'm confident that this tread will survive as long as that remains true. Or until someone locks it for being too long or something." - Ace Naruto Manga Chapter Recaps "I for one, would have dropped everything to do with the series, had it not been for those recaps! And I'm sure many other people feel the same! Ace has somehow managed to turn a lot of the FAIL that plagues the Naruto manga into something so awesomely funny that I could sue him for the injuries my sides have been subjected to due to my laughter. Something so devilishly hilarious DESERVES to have the fitting title of NIFTY." - chibi-master Crimson Knight/Lunar/Monarck/any onther name she changes it to! "Heck, why ISN'T she nifty?! This nutcase has made so many popular threads, argued many an argument, and back-handed me with so much random junk that it's impossible NOT to notice her! Popping up in what I'm sure is EVERY FORUM, Ms. Changehername has added so much spice to the boards that I feel the need for a glass of water! And because I have mentioned it so much before, she keeps changing her dang username, keeping us all on edge! She has captured the attention of many a member, and thus, I nominate her for the label of NIFTY." - chibi-master Raiha "Who else can you point blank argue with to the point of whacking each other upside the head and yet still be friends with? Very Nifty, if you ask me...." - DeLarge Backstage "The Backstage has really come into it's own this year. It has been the jumping-off point for so many great RPs, and it's generally just a good way to gain interest in new RPs. It was in the Backstage that such RPs as Almagest Legacy, Von Braun and many more besides were born, and look how they turned out.” - DeLarge The New Joker Obsession "Every other RP I've looked at, whether it is intended or not, has some kind of reference to the Joker. It was a chance for other members to get involved - and win - even if they weren't terribly amazing with a mouse and graphics programme. All the artwork for it looks great whether or not it got into the Hall of Fame... did I mention I won it once?” - Vicky Graphic Worm "Because it's been going for years.
Leonhart and Ivan Almagest entered the courtyard of Rosengard late that afternoon. It was a lovely day outside, and many of the freshly planted flowers had already begun blossom in the unusually warm weather. The small children of Rosengard, many of whom had become orphaned during the Revolution, played beneath an enormous oak tree as a small crew of workers worked to maintain the grounds. With so many new faces and sights the Almagest estate had never been more alive; but ironically the family’s patriarch no longer felt at home there. In his old age Leonhart found it difficult to sleep, and would often spend his evenings walking the halls, inspecting Rosengard for even the slightest imperfection. In years past he had passed that responsibility to his oldest friend and most trusted advisor Dame Anna Grimalkin, but the actions of another had damaged that relationship irreparably. He was a perfectionist first and foremost; aside from Anna there were few who could survive his impossible attention to detail. With each passing day in Anna’s absence, no matter what Leonhart did, it seemed to him that Rosengard continued to fall deeper and deeper into disrepair. To those in Czenovia, and even abroad, Rosengard was a monument to his family’s name. This was the home that Lord Celcius first constructed over a century ago, and one whose history should never be forgotten. Leonhart was more worried than ever about the future of his family. Perhaps like Rosengard, he wondered, The Almagests were perhaps falling apart as well. Leonhart made a mental note of some overgrowing brush towards the stone archway as he entered through an enormous set of double doors, and motioned Ivan towards the stairway. “Up there should be a room prepared for you,” Leonhart said gruffly, “Expect to depart late this evening.” Ivan sheepishly nodded, clearly intimidated by his great uncle, “Yes sir,” he walked halfway up the stairs before stopping momentarily, “And thank you.” “Don’t,” Leonhart paused before he continued, “I thought very highly of your father.” “Will you be coming with us, sir?” “No,” a commanding female voice called out from the top of the stairs, “He most certainly will not.” Although he did not recognize the voice Ivan certainly knew the face. The woman before him was none other than Lady Bavaria Deacon, Leonhart’s wife and the current advisor to Dynast King Primas Generous. He did not know the details specifically, but he had heard from his mother that she and Leonhart had a falling out. She folded her arms as Leonhart turned his attention her way. “Bavaria. This is a surprise.” “An unpleasant one, I’m afraid,” she replied dryly, “I need to discuss your expedition with you.” Leonhart narrowed his eyes, “No.” Bavaria let out a soft laugh as she walked down the stairs, passing Ivan without the slightest acknowledgement of his presence. Leonhart turned his back to her, and she followed closely behind as the two headed down the hall towards his study. Ivan, unsure of what to do, decided it might be safer to head upstairs rather than witness the exchange unfolding before him. “Did you think you could prepare supplies, chimaera… an airship without King Primas learning of it? Were you not going to talk to me first?” “What I’m doing is in the best interest in Czenovia, Bavaria. There was no time to put this matter to a vote.” “This is more than a simple treasure hunt. The last time an Almagest uncovered a Xear artifact it ended in disaster.” He shook his head, “Only because it was stolen by Primas’ father. I will not make the same mistake again.” “I suppose Cole is working with you on this as well? If so, you can inform him that the recovery of any Xear artifacts on Czenovian soil should have been reported to the Czenovian Poice immediately. That map of his, and whatever comes of it, are rightful property of this nation.” “Cole is on vacation with Beatriste Elyse,” Leonjart replied, “I will lead this expedition myself.” “That’s absurd,” Bavaria said coldly, “I have merely come to express the orders of the Dynast. A member of the military is being approached right now, and he will personally escort your team to the location of the artifact.“ “This is none of the Dynast’s concern,” he said between heavy coughs, “Nor yours, since you’ve taken up residence in the Mirror Palace.” She winced, “There’s another thing… it’s my brother Jack. I asked him to work with your team.” “You can’t be serious, Leonhart said as leaned against the wall, “Your brother is an unreliable scoundrel.” “He’s my blood and I thought he we held leverage over him. However, it seems he has disappeared in one of Artemis’ advanced airships. I'm afraid if he hasn’t sold the details of the artifact to the Anovans he may have turned to the pirates.” “This is exactly why I wanted the details of this private,” he glared, “It appears nobody can be trusted.” “Please, try to act adult…” As they turned a corner Leonhart stopped for a moment, breathing heavily. Bavaria reached for his shoulder, and he pulled away suddenly. “Are you alright?” There was a pause, and suddenly Leonhart reached for his chest, collapsing to the ground. "Leonhart!"
Writing The Otaku Prose Contest Round 1.3 (Anomaly VS. Lrb)
Shy replied to Mykul's topic in Creative Works
Anomaly has my vote! I'm really bad with constructive criticism, but I will say that Anomaly's did a better job at drawing me into the store. It seemed to be more nuanced and less cliche than Lrb's. -Shy -
Soooo..... What are we supposed to do now? I've forgotten.
Well... since you asked.... here is my understanding of what is going on.

Leonhart has recruited several for his crew, including Macey and Ivan, but there are two more who still need to join up. Harrison and his mentor/leader need to be recruited, and from there the small crew (minus Leonhart) can head up to the Vosper summit.
The Anovan crew (Frederic, Belmonda, Natalia) have one more addition to the crew as well. I don't know if Malkav is handling that in his post or Nathan though. Then they will head to Vosper, however both the Czenovian and Anovan expeditions have no idea what exactly they are looking for.
Felix, Elaine and Juste are free to head up to Vosper immediately. It is a trip of several hours, so there is time to rest and for the crew to interact with one another until they arrive. Once they 'arrive' I will write a post featuring these characters and establish what exactly the mountainous Vosper summit is like.
Gustave, Victoria Ann and Liana (if she would like) are attending the fashion show. Gustave and/or Esther are free to attend as well, or pursue their own adventures... whichever.
Fonty has a bad headache from the night before. And it's only going to get worse.
And that's about it. Get to posting, yo. -Shy
Maybe it's just me here, but the way I read it sounds much more like Leonhart was the one who arranged the expulsion so he could take advantage of Ivan's knowledge while shifting the blame to Dawlish so Ivan wouldn't suspect the truth of the matter. After all Leonhart is just an older version of Dawlish for many intents and purposes, so him being an even bigger and better sneak wouldn't surprise me at all. Or perhaps it's just the idea that Dawlish would be so petty, having already trounced his nephew in front of the whole family on the Alaina doesn't fit with his character. Sure he's a jerk sometimes but that might be going a bit far to destroy someone whom he doesn't have any strong feelings for, like or dislike.
I suppose that's fair. I think we discussed that Dawlish has high hopes for Ivan, and I figured this would tie into those higher plans. It's perfectly within character for Leonhart to orchestrate this whole thing, though. -Shy
I get the feeling I probably messed something up somehow here. Let me know if it needs to be tweaked. Or overhauled.
I could actually see Dawlish report the incident to the school and police in secret. I'm not sure how the 'international incident' thing works, but charging Ivan for assault is possible. After all, Dawlish is kind of an asshole (still love Gavin, though.) As for the end, I will say that the Xear expeditions are secret. Natalia discussing the mission with her father was fine, since he is an Achard and can most likely be trusted. The only ones 'out of the loop' on the Anovan side are Gustave and Olivier, although I suspect both of them will find out soon enough and won't be happy with it. The police wouldn't be aware of Leonhart's mission, but if Leonhart were to visit the school and announce that he was taking a vested interest in the child the matter would be dropped entirely. From there Leonhart could approach the boy in private, and recruit him, trying to set his wayward grandson on the right path. But it's Leonhart, so you never really know what he has planned.... -Shy

Okay it's the next day, and various characters are being approached to join the two(four?) expeditions. Meanwhile the Church is making plans of their own. Some of you I have spoken to on AIM about the various plans for your characters, others are given a little more free-reign to do whatever they would like. Hinata/Nathan: Although Frederic would keep the details of the expedition secretive (for now) the area we will be traveling to for the first artifact is largely inaccessible by airship. Chimaera are the primary, and really only, method of transportation. If Natalia has no interest in traveling we can work around it. I don't want to force anyone into anything and there is A LOT of room for flexibility. PJ McKraftison: You are free to cover Felix explaining what he knows to the Sief. Aaryanna Mom will be covering specific details about the location of the first artifact in a future post (as soon as I talk to her about those details, that is.) Everyone else, stay gold. Sorry for the delay in getting this up. -Shy

Setting the Stage The Alaina’s celebratory flight only lasted a few short hours, and it was not long after landing that the two families parted ways. For Belmonda, like many other guests, this meant another long airship voyage home where she could resume her work. Although it was nice to spend an evening with Felix and Frederic again, the occasion brought on too many painful memories for her to bear. For once Belmonda was grateful that the Almagests were so quick to air their dirty laundry at public functions; Dawlish’s arrival made her own emotional outburst seem tame by comparison. The next morning Belmonda left Achard Hall early for her job at Le Monde’s famed Bourgade National Museum. Over a century ago the Bourgade family was the wealthiest in all of New Globe, having earned their fortune through a successful shipping business. Their matriarch, Abigail, was a prominent artist who took great pride in displaying her works, as well as collecting the works of others. It is through her acquisitions that the bulk of the museum’s collection was formed, and following Abigail’s death Bourgade Manor was opened to the public and renamed to the Bourgade National Museum. Even with recent renovations and additions small touches were scattered throughout the manor that made it very clear that a family had once lived there; after all, nowhere else could one view prehistoric fossils in the middle of a kitchen. Space was limited, certainly, but the dedicated staff and curators worked tirelessly to make the Bourgade the finest in the New Globe, if not the world. Much of the history museum was located in an adjoining building constructed years after the museum had been donated to the Anovan government. Enormous skylights beamed in the silver glow of morning, adding an extra bit of luster to the historical heirlooms that were being prepared for display. In only a week the Bourgade would be debuting a historical retrospective on the Mine War, one of the first of its’ kind. While in Czenovia the war was looked at as a source of pride, on the other side of the desert there was still a great deal of shame and resentment. As Belmonda polished a bronze Czenovian helmet near a display case she heard the sound of footsteps approaching from behind her chair. “Hello sister.” Belmonda turned around to discover Frederic standing before her in full military regalia. “This is a pleasant surprise,” she said with a smile, “It’s so rare that you visit the museum anymore.” “The SSF has kept me busy, I’m afraid. In fact, I can only be here a few short moments.” Bella raised an eyebrow in suspicion, “Then I wager that this is not a personal visit. Is everything alright?” “It’s regarding the Xear. I’m sure you overheard whispers at the party last night.” Of course Belmonda had. It seemed as though once the word was muttered it was all the guests could talk about. Decades earlier Lector Moebius had discovered the key to translating select portions of the Xear language, leading to a renewed interest in uncovering information about the ‘lost’ culture. As a result, throughout Belmonda’s education she visited several former Xear cities, including the ruins beneath Cobalt Bay. These expensive excavations proved time-consuming, and ultimately few artifacts were ever recovered. “It would appear that some sort of Xear map was found during a dig at the Villette Mines,” Frederic continued, “A map to what, nobody is certain, but Cole Dreadnaught has made it a priority that a search party is formed immediately. ” “That is absurd,” Bella huffed, “Archeologists have been looking for Xear culture and records for ages. It seems obvious that whatever this map leads to was destroyed or stolen centuries ago.” Frederic nodded, “That’s certainly a fear, but the alternative is not to act at all, and that seems even more foolish.” Many in the historical community believed that discovering the secrets of the ancient civilization was a lost cause, Belmonda included. However she was fully aware of what ramifications that uncovering another piece of advanced weaponry could have. Had the Underdogs’ Xear canon not been destroyed or fallen into Anovan hands, the balance of world power might have shifted significantly. “Cole has asked me to lead the expedition, and I would like for you to work alongside me Bella.” Belmonda knew that tone of her brother’s voice well; he was not so much asking as he was telling. She shook her head softly, “And when would this expedition begin?” “At once. I need to speak with a few others, and Natalia, as her expertise with chimaera will be paramount to our first destination. She is one of the best in her field, and more importantly I know I can trust her.” “But do you know that you can trust Cole Dreadnaught? Aren’t you concerned that his allegiances shifted along with his surname?” “Not at all. My understanding is that this group is being assembled without the knowledge or approval of the Almagests and Czenovia. Besides, I’ve no doubt that Leonhart is organizing a group of his own.” “Married for not even a day and already plotting against his family. Perhaps Cole was a better fit for the Almagests than I thoughts….” she looked into Frederic’s eyes, hoping to steal a smile from his stone-cold façade, “I’ve little choice in the matter, do I?” “I spoke with Director Ordway as I entered. As of right now you are taking a leave of absence due to a ‘looming national crisis.’ I have made it very clear that he will have to answer to me if you aren’t welcomed back into your position by the end of this…” “--However long that may be.” “However long that may be. Yes.” he replied, “Now head home and pack light. We will be leaving this afternoon.” “Pack for what? I don’t even know where we are going.” “You’ll find that out when we arrive, Bella,” he replied as he bowed farewell, “But I would recommend bringing a jacket.”
I don't know a lot about cars but every time I go to get my oil changed I am asked if I need to get my air filter replaced. Normally I say yes and deal with the extra 30 dollar charge, but today I was watching my spending and had to decline. In order to better sell their point, the salesman show me a pitch black SQUARE air filter, covered with leaves and oil, claiming it was mine. I recalled getting my air filter changed the last time my oil was, so immediately my suspicions were raised. I had to stop at a parts store and pick up some coolant for my car anyway, so I figured I could buy a new air filter and change it out myself. When I went to store I was immediately suspicious of the service I had received at Jiffy Lube. The filter I was shown by the mechanic was SQUARE, but the air filter I purchased (the only kind that would work for my car) for my car was RECTANGULAR. When I got home I was certain that Jiffy Lube had been trying to rip me off. The 'filthy' air filter was in fact only slightly yellow in color (not black,) and nothing at all like the one they showed me. The Jiffy Lube repairman lied to me in order to sell me a new air filter. Jiffy Lube should be ashamed, and I don't think I will ever get my oil changed there again. This is exactly the kind of cheating that turns people off to hiring a mechanic in the first place. Have you ever caught a mechanic trying to rip you off? -Shy
I don't know if it needs to be changed, but Esther very much doesn't want people to know that she and Dawlish are involved. Apart from that, though, you wrote her perfectly.

These spam/porn/ad/bots are ridiculous. Why are they even able to register for the site? -Shy

I don't know exactly why, but I wrote a post featuring Esther and Dawlish pretty heavily, If anything needs to be changed let me know, as I don't feel like I had a clear grasp on either of them. I like Esther a lot, though, so people had better start using her. Heh. James I also mentioned in my post that the House of Grimoire will be holding a fashion show throughout the week. Perhaps this is something you want to touch on; it's a good excuse for Edith to interact with some of the other characters. And Dawlish spoiled the surprise of the Xear artifacts to the crowd. I trust the Church of the Phoenix, and many others will find out about this soon enough. -Shy

Several of the Alaina’s private security had formed a semi-circle around Dawlish Almagest, cautiously waiting for an excuse to forcibly remove the unwanted guest. As the crowd gossiped amongst themselves, Leonhart Almagest took a moment to admire the size and scope of Dawlish’s Merdidia. Every since the young man sold his interest in Magitech and founded Icarus Leonhart had been hearing rumblings of enormous construction projects taking place along the Anovan border. If he were able to build such a majestic ship in only a few year’s time, Leonhart thought, What else could he have created? “That is quite enough,” the old man commanded, motioning for the young Ivan to leave, “I will not have either of you make a mockery of my daughter’s wedding.” Dawlish thought for a moment, then softly nodded, “But of course Leonhart. I merely came to present a gift to the bride, and send her my best wishes.” He reached within his coat pocket and withdrew a simple silver pendant, containing a few arcane symbols scratched onto its’ side. Beatriste turned her head away in disgust. Dawlish reached for his cousin’s hand, but was quickly interrupted by a sharp set of glances from Cole and Gustave. Instead he reached for Cole’s hand, and placed the jewelry in his palm. Cole took a moment to admire the piece, and soon recognized the origin of the inscription: Xear. “It seemed appropriate given the mumblings I have been hearing from Villette, Cole. I take it you’ll launch your search as soon as the festivities are over?” Beatriste leaned in to her husband, “What is he talking about?” “You’ve been spying on me?” Dawlish let out a cocky laugh, “It’s a necessity of this business, I’m afraid. But don’t worry, not even I have seen the details of that Xear map you have hidden so deep underground….” The word ‘Xear’ quickly drew the attention of several onlookers. Leonhart narrowed his eyes; what he had hoped to be a private search was at risk of becoming public; he knew that he would have to organize an expedition at once if he hoped to recover the artifacts for Czenovia. Beatriste was clearly upset by these confrontations, but did her best to hide it so as not to ruin her make-up, “Cousin. Please. We will be landing soon and I’d like to enjoy the rest of my wedding peacefully.” Dawlish bowed respectfully, "You are right Bea, I'm sorry for the commotion." The bride stood up and walked away to Esther, who had been sheepishly standing in the corner during the various confrontations, “Hello my dear, I don’t believe we have been formally introduced, and I make it a point to meet everyone who attends my wedding.” Esther curtsied, “My name is Esther Blake, Dawlish's personal assistant and advisor. It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Dreadnaught. Your gown looks absolutely gorgeous.” “Why thank you Miss Blake, and you can call me Beatriste. This was a personal gift from my friend Edith Grimoire,” Bea smiled softly, “I see from your dress that you are a fan of her label as well.” “Oh very much so! I think every young girl goes through the newspapers, though, cutting out pictures of the latest fashions from the House of Grimoire. If Dawlish had not been kind enough to buy me this, I never would have been able to afford it myself.” “Well, I think even Edith would agree that someone such as yourself deserves only the finest things in life.” “You are too kind.” “Not at all. If you are in Le Monde after the weekend you should visit the House of Grimoire, and tell them I sent you. I understand the label is holding their annual fashion show throughout the week, and nobody leaves without a designer outfit or two.” The two women shared a laugh, and they turned towards Dawlish. “This is the side of him I loathe, Esther said coldly, “In private company he is one man, yet when running Icarus or dealing with his family he is someone else entirely.” “It is… it is hard for me to pity Dawlish after everything he has done, but I will always care for him. He has been through much tragedy in his life, I only wish he could find peace.” Esther sighed, “I only wish he would let me in.” Beatriste paused, thinking for a moment before she spoke again, “You know, Dawlish’s mother once told me that the key to dealing with an Almagest was patience. If you give it enough time, his softer side will begin to show itself.” “And what am I supposed to do until then?” “Ride it out and make the most of it, I suppose. After all, you are being paid to attend the biggest party of the year. It seems such a waste not to enjoy yourself at least a small bit.” Esther gave an approving nod, and she walked back towards her date. "How was your chat with Beatriste Elyse?" "Good, thank you. She's as nice as the papers say she is," Esther replied as she extended her hand to Dawlish, "Now if you're done terrifying your family, this girl would like a dance."
