I'm with you 100%. But you know that's where it's going to end up. A pastor won't agree and it's going to be a big hissy fit and a screaming tantrum. And the next thing you know a pastor will be "lynched" by the media.
I don't think anyone is going to do that. There are many religious organizations and churches that do not discriminate against homosexuals, so most gay couples that choose to add religion to their ceremony have the option of going there instead.
We could go into a much lengthier discussion about how churches receive government tax-exemptions despite the fact that many openly discriminate against certain groups... but we won't!
-Shy
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In a much-anticipated ruling issued Thursday, the California Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional. California's Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the state's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. Several gay and lesbian couples, along with the city of San Francisco and gay rights groups, sued to overturn state laws allowing only marriages between a man and a woman. "There can be no doubt that extending the designation of marriage to same-sex couples, rather than denying it to all couples, is the equal protection remedy that is most consistent with our state's general legislative policy and preference," said the 120-page ruling. It said that the state law's language "limiting the designation of marriage to a 'union between a man and a woman' is unconstitutional, and that the remaining statutory language must be understood as making the designation of marriage available to both opposite-sex and same-sex couples." With the ruling, California becomes the second state to allow same-sex couples to legally wed. Massachusetts adopted the practice in 2004, and couples don't need to be state residents to wed there.
So um... yeah. This was good news for me to wake up to this morning. Shy replied to Charles's topic in General Discussion
My last final is tomorrow, so I'm going to try and get some articles up during my Summer. On a related note: Has anyone heard from Charles lately? It's one thing for people to spend less time online, but I haven't heard from the guy in probably 6 months. I hate it when people disappear like that, I get concerned. -Shy -
I mean Hillary definitely gave him a run for his money, and she can take this to the convention if she wants, but this race is mathematically over.
I agree that the race is over, but this election hasn't been so cut and dry either. Although the pundits have been quick to point out that Hillary can't mathematically win, Obama can't either. At last count the delegates are 1697 for Clinton, and 1869 for Obama. This isn't an enormous difference, so I understand why she has to drag this out all the way until the convention. Plus, if Michigan and Florida were to have been counted the delegate counts would be even tighter. Anyway, I've always felt like Obama will have difficulties in a general election. I think he is a very competent candidate, but I prefer Clinton for her stance on the few issues where they actually disagree. It will be interesting to see who he selects as a running mate. I'm hoping for Bill Richardson because (heaven forbid) he is the most qualified guy for the job. -Shy
Just an interesting read: Seeds of Destruction, New York Times I'm honestly not sure how you can say this in good conscience -- not only has Obama won "lily-white" states in the past, he continues to do well even without the white vote. In fact, he leads McCain in the General Election, according to the Rasmussen Report for 5/11. Simply because he's not pulling in the majority of the white vote does not bode poorly -- blacks are voting as a singular bloc for him, with the youth turning out in record numbers far in his favor. Feel free to write them off, but they're what got him this far.
How is 'Blacks are voting as a singular bloc for Obama' any better an argument than 'The whites like Hillary'? Also, I wasn't neccessarily agreeing with the Clinton argument, I was merely stating it. Whites are the largest voting group in America and Republican candidates get elected almost exclusively by Whites. Even if every Black person in America registered and voted Democrat it would still impact only a handful of states. Candidates will need all of the Black and youth support they can get, but in most states 'record turnout' for youth and Black voters is basically anything over 10% of the population. That isn't enough to turn over the enormous White voting blocks that have dominated American politics for 200 years. Clinton has a stronger hold of that voting bloc. To win this election Obama will need to broaden his base appeal beyond young and minority voters. Otherwise McCain will snatch up every single undecided voter who was once a Clinton supporter. Obama's wins in southern 'lily white' states can be attributed to his popularity among African-Americans. However, in those same states the majority of voters are registered Republicans, so who cares? -Shy
-
Sure, take into account all bits of information of candidates. It makes sense. It's logical. I guess the entire mess disturbs me because Clinton is willing to say Obama can no longer bring in the white vote. Her entire pitch for the Presidency has gone from being "I can stand up to attacks" to "I have a delegate lead" to "I have the superdelegate lead" to "C'mon people, I'm white!"
That's not correct. The Clinton argument is that Hillary's main voting block (white middle-class voters) are probably going to be the ones who will decide the general election. Whereas Obama has won more overall votes, he has done so in states that are already guaranteed Democratic states. Hillary's wins are in contested states that could very well decide the election -- this is a key difference here. The fact of the matter is that blacks and youth vote almost exclusively liberal. While his popularity among those groups is commendable, it's not going to impact the election. -Shy

If there are any issues with my sign-up let me know. I had hoped to catch James or Indi online before I started writing my sign-up, but once I got started I kind of got carried away. For the record: Edward Kundi, Terra Prime and Arthur don't know anything specific about the cause of the Great Disaster, but merely see some sort of connection between it and space travel. They mean well in their mission to prevent another Great Disaster from happening, but will not let the loss of a few lives get in the way. -Shy

Passenger Name: "Arthur Clarke" Real Name: Arthur Kendi Age: 28 Identification: Occupation & Background: Born in Washington Prime, but raised abroad, Arthur Kendi is the son of Professor Edward Kendi, the reclusive historian and terrorist leader. Edward sacrificed his career by speaking out publicly about the NARA's space program, fearing it could result in another cataclysmic event. However, with no evidence to support his theory, Edward's views were dismissed by the NARA as 'rampant paranoia.' He was mocked in the press and shortly thereafter fired from his position as a university professor. Following a difficult separation from his wife and newborn child. Edward went on to form Terra Prime, the world's leading and most notorious space protest group. In the years leading up to the Von Braun Odyssey Terra Prime has been responsible for sabotaging space test flights and destroying production factories across the globe. These actions have resulted in many deaths, which Edward simply dismisses as 'casualties' of his personal war. Prior to the launch of the Von Braun Odyssey the NARA rededicated itself to stopping Terra Prime at all costs, resulting in the successful arrest of Edward Kendi. This has left Edward's only son, Arthur, to carry on Terra Prime's mission. Arthur has been raised by his mother for most of his life, but retains an almost fanatical devotion to his father's beliefs. With much of Terra Prime's manpower and resources lost, Arthur was unsuccessful in preventing the Von Braun's launch. However, he has managed to sneak himself on board the maiden voyage by using a false identity. Quiet and soft-spoken, Arthur is a man with many skills and many secrets. He has vowed to prevent another Great Disaster from ever happening, no matter what the cost.

The thing is that members are always called upon to help make these events a reality. If the Event Master can't assemble a group of like-minded individuals to support and develop their project then they may be ill-equipped for the job. I mean, it's not like we're trying to get people to join the army, it shouldn't be a chore. And if you thought getting one person to create an event was difficult, try working through the red tape of getting multiple individuals to agree on something. I kind of like Sandy's OB court idea. It's very similar to an RPG I'm thinking about launching, heh. -Shy
Alright, I'll be working on my final post tonight, wherein some sort of reunion with Henry and Morphia will take place. So if my post seems to backtrack in history a little bit I hope that's fine, since I figure it'll happen just after Morphia left the palace to find Henry. And Shy, I don't know if you were planning to do a final post with Morphia or not, but if you were and want to talk to me about what you want to happen between the two, I'm all ears :D
I don't have any specific plans for Morphia. Malkav was considering something, but I think we'd both much rather see what you have in mind. These final posts have been great so far. I cannot wait to see the rest of them. -Shy Edit: I don't know if it was clear in Malkav's post or not, but Morphia is set to inherit Artemis Air Transports from the late Meredyne Artemis. Meredyne would want Jack to run the company, but as a pirate he knows that the business world is not his place. How involved she is in the day-to-day operations of the business is open to interpretation, but more than anything it's a simple gift between siblings.
Yes I'm bringing this back. Deal with it. RPG Title: 101 [PG-V] Genre: Horror/Sci-Fi Setting: A sleepy midwestern college town. Basic Summary: Sara, an aspiring writer, enrolls in her community college's weekly 'creative writing' class. She soon finds herself jaded when she discovers that her fellow students only like to write tacky sci-fi stories and vampire fiction. As Sara considers dropping the class she stumbles across a crime scene eerily reminiscent of one of her peer's stories. It is then that she realizes her fellow students aren't just writing tacky sci-fi stories and vampire fiction, they're living it. Players would assume the role of Sara, her friends, and the eclectic students who fill her creative writing class. Excerpts from creative writing 'assignments' would be included in some posts, and often juxtaposed with action or comedy. The RPG would be a balance of action, soap opera, and cliche, all as the momentum builds towards an exciting confrontation during finals. -Shy

If you have any doubts as to what I'm referring to Shy, I'll link you to specific examples via pm.
Believe me, I know. An RPG's creator can set the tone for the story in their posts, but ultimately it's determined by the other players and their posts. After all, this is collaborative storytelling. I was merely saying that you'll have a better idea of what to expect based on the sign-ups, and who expresses interest in the project. Anyway, will players be allowed to play as staff and hotel guests, or will all of the player characters in the RPG be one or the other? -Shy
Let's just say that, given who's in control, I don't think that'll be a problem.
You'll learn that the creator has less to do with the content level than the players themselves. From behind the shattered glass and broken doorframes there appeared to be some sort of bustling activity taking place within. With the sun recently set over High Czenoble, the small kerosene lanterns inside were the only lights in the entire city. “Do you think the King is alright?” Eva asked worriedly, “The Palace is a wreck.” “I’m sure they’re fine,” Catherine said, her voice strained from the day’s events. Gustave nodded, “There doesn’t appear to be any damage to the structure, at least. As long as they stayed indoors they should be fine.” Fauntleroy shared an awkward glance with his father. With his pale complexion and disheveled appearance Leonhart Almagest no longer looked like the larger-than-life figure who had been present throughout his son’s entire life. Though he tried to hide it, he was clearly exhausted, and trembling slightly. This was not the same man who had dismissed Fonty so many times before; perhaps in time, he thought, he might be able to form a relationship with this stranger who had come out of the tunnels. Victoria Ann leapt from Lucy and immediately dashed through the Palace doors, “I’m starving! I hope they have something to eat here…!” Catherine rolled her eyes as she, and the rest of the group, followed the young girl inside. Only a few of the Almagests had ever seen the Mirror Palace, and even in its’ current state it was still a sight to behold. Gustave watched in amazement as dozens of servants dutifully swept and scrubbed the palace floors, removing any trace of the battle. “Watch your feet!” a housemaid cried as the group traced in dust from the tunnels, “We only just got this floor clear!” “Pardon us dear,” Macey said politely, “But we must see the King right away. There are matters that demand his attention.” “You will have to wait. King Primas is locked in his quarters at the moment with Lady Bavaria, and there are strict orders not to disturb them.” “I would expect as much from the harlot.” Macey replied callously, “…Oh, sorry about that, Father.” Leonhart narrowed his eyes as he looked at the maid, “Never you mind, girl. I'll find Bavaria myself.” The woman stared at Leonhart curiously for a moment before realizing who she was speaking to, “My, whatever you'd like Lord Almagest!” With all of the activity in the palace, Morphia found the need to leave her family and find some peace and quiet. As a result, she retreated once again into the dungeon below, where a lone guard watched over Prince August. The young man sat quietly in the corner as the soldier watched Morphia carefully. “No visitors are allowed for the prisoner, Lady Markham.” “I’m merely trying to hide from my father,” she replied with a feigned smile, “I’m sure you won’t mind me in here for a few moments.” “And here I thought we servants were the only ones afraid of your father,” he said, “Stay as long as you‘d like. It‘s not as if our prisoner has been much for conversation…” Morphia approached the large cell holding Prince August. The two locked eyes, and Morphia let out a warm smile, “Hello August.” There was a moment of silence before Augustus finally spoke up. “H-- h-- hello, Morphia,” he said sheepishly, “I-- I’m sorry for the things I said to you.” “What do you mean?” “I knew that someone was p--p--plotting against my family. I thought it was Agron, b-but it was really Augustine... Morphia’s eyes widened, “Do you mean that’s why you did… what you did?” August nodded slowly, his eyes streaming with tears, “I-- I saw her with The Starks. She was behind everything.” Morphia turned to the guard, “Call for my father right away! He has to hear this for himself!” “Of course!” he replied as he rushed up the steps. “Oh August,” Morphia said softly, extending her hand through the bars to August,“Everyone has been so afraid to speak to you, of your condition. But I knew there had to be an explanation of some kind…” “She was lying to me, Morphia. She had even hired Hugo Black to sabotage your race.” There was an uncomfortable moment of silence as Morphia’s mind began to put the pieces together. She had always known that Black was a tool of the Dynast, but never did she imagine how far this loyalty went. Though her family had blamed Henry for what happened, she knew better. Now finally she was able to prove it. “You have to tell them everything, August. It will save your life.” “My life is already o-over,“ August said as he turned his head away sharply, “I was already a prisoner in this Palace, Morphia. What I did was a mistake, I have no interest in r--ruining the name of my sister.” “August, please!” “This c--crown has ruined my family. Don’t let it do the same to you.” The thunder of footsteps stormed down the stairway. Agron Deacon, closely followed by a pair of guards, quickly entered the dungeon. “Morphia! Back away from the prisoner!” Morphia rose to her feet, “Father, please. Prince August has something that you must hear.” The Prince shook his head, “Go!” “Guards keep an eye on the Prince,” Agron commanded, “Under no circumstances shall he receive visitors of any kind, do you understand?” “Yes, sir.” Her eyes welling with tears, Morphia slowly walked upstairs at his father’s side. He attempted to hold her hand, but she pulled away sharply. “You scared me half to death, Morphia,” Agron exclaimed, “I was trying to contact your brother when I heard that you were with Prince August. How can you be so foolish?” “Prince August is an innocent soul. You know as well as I do that he wouldn’t commit a crime like that unless provoked.” “Provoked or not, the law is the law. There are no exceptions to that.” “Exceptions? Jack is as much a murderer as August. How many ships has he downed over the years, father? Yet you desperately call for him to return to High Czenoble, under the pretense that he‘s needed as some sort of figurehead.” “Jack‘s actions can be overlooked during a time of war. I am merely trying to protect him.” “And who is there to protect August?” “Has it not occurred to you that the Prince might be satisfied with his fate?” Agron asked, “After all, to royalty dishonor is a fate worse than death.” “How can they live like that?” Agron sighed, “They simply have no choice. Nor do we.” Morphia shook her head, She turned her back to her father, and began walking towards the palace doors. “Morphia, where are you going?!” “Where I should have been in the first place, father. I need to find Henry.” Agron sighed as he rubbed his forehead softly, “That girl is just like her brother…” "That's the nature of children, I'm afraid," said a familiar voice from behind, "Were we no different?" Agron Deacon turned around slowly to discover a scruffy-looking older man standing before him. His eyes quickly widened is disbelief as he realizes that this was no stranger, but Leonhart Almagest himself. "Leonhart!? You're alive!?" "There will be time to discuss what happened to me later, but I'm told that there is still much work to be done." There was a moment of silence as Agron struggled to collect his thoughts. "Why yes, of course. As we speak Czenovia is forming a new democracy, the likes of which the New Globe has never seen before." "Do you really think this will end the conflict?" "I am certain of it. After all, who else is more qualified to save the nation than my own daughter?" "Bavaria is an amazing woman..." Leonhart replied with a grin. "Just like her mother, I suppose. Come with me, old friend. Let's be a witness to history."

Well Blayze, I realize I was thinking the same way you were. Then I remembered an important rule in the musical world. For a musical, it's normal for people to spontaneously burst out into song. It's what they do, why they live. It's an unwritten, understood law of nature if you will.
Exactly. The characters in the story will not be self-aware in that sense. To them bursting into song if perfectly normal, and nobody would bother to acknowledge it within the story. Basically we'd be including the lyrics as dialogue, and, if possible MP3s of the original songs within our posts. Here's a brief example of how I imagine things would work.
Diana and Michael entered her dark apartment in the middle of the night. Michael was badly bruised from his fight on the streets, and she carefully rested him on the couch while she searched her apartment for a first aid kit. "Oh Michael," Diana said, her face full of worry, "What was wrong with those people that attacked you on the subway? Did you notice how strange their teeth were?" "That's what I've been trying to tell you, Diana. They're vampires." "Now you're being ridiculous," she replied from the bathroom, "I'm just glad we're somewhere safe." Michael let out a heavy sigh. Although they had managed to escape once, now that they had a taste of his blood there would be no way to hide. Diana entered the room, and Michael took off his shirt to reveal a bloody puncture wound on his chest. "Oh, it's awful. You're gonna rest here tonight." "Just patch it up so I can leave," Michael winced as Diana poured rubbing alcohol across the wound, "We need to go back to my place and get my things, Diana." "And why do we need to do that?" "I need to confront them once and for all. I have weapons at my place..." Diana's eyes narrowed, "There's almost a dozen of those guys, and you're just some scrawny kid from the suburbs. I'll call the police in just a minute...." "You don't understand. They're gonna follow us." "You don't understand, Michael. I've lived in this city my entire life, and I'm not losing another friend to the street gangs. There's only one safe thing to do and that's to wait for this whole mess to blow over.
They told you don't you ever come around here Don't wanna see your face, you better disappear The fire's in their eyes and their words are really clear So beat it, just beat it You better run, you better do what you can Don't wanna see no blood, don't be a macho man You wanna be tough, better do what you can So beat it, but you wanna be bad
"It's about more than that, Diana! You know I can't run away with you!"
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it No one wants to be defeated Showin' how funky strong is your fighter It doesn't matter who's wrong or right Just beat it, beat it Just beat it, beat it Just beat it, beat it Just beat it, beat it They're out to get you, better leave while you can Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man You wanna stay alive, better do what you can So beat it, just beat it
As Diana finished placing the bandage on his chest Michael rose to his feet. He looked to Diana for compassion, but she merely folded her arms with a look of indignation across her face. "I'm sorry..." Michael reached for his shirt, and stormed out of the apartment.
So that's how I figure a typical post might look like. Let me know what you guys think. -Shy

The Moonwalker idea is actually pretty awesome. Are any of you guys familiar with Captain EO (link)? It was a sci-fi themed 3D movie that ran in the Disney theme parks for a couple of years, and somehow managed to combine Michael Jackson with space opera. I wouldn't want to rip that off entirely, but it might be fun to do a fantasy setting heavily inspired by MJ music. Sci-Fi is the obvious choice for genre, or maybe Horror if we decide to focus on Thriller. What would you rather do? -Shy
