2. I'm sorry to say this but I think I'm going to end the RPG now. This isn't a slight to anyone in particular, but I was never really impressed with the response WWN has received so far. I think it's fair to say that we can all spend our time and creative energies on other projects we have more of an interest in. Thanks again to everyone who has participated. I hope this doens't discourage anyone from signing up for more RPGs in the future (especially mine!) -Shy
  3.
I think that was Wondershot's idea, actually; otherwise, I have no earthly idea what you might be referring to.
You're totally correct. My memory slipped temporarily, and once again someone chimes in to correct me right away. Heh. -Shy
  4.
Yeah, I guess discrimination online happened back then, I wouldn't know, I wasn't around. Sorry for the ignorance
Well I'm not saying it was some big epidemic, but it's definitely something that does happen (even subconciously) to this day. I've never felt the need to pretend to be a different age online, but I didn't "come out" on OB until years after I had joined. There are countless other examples, I'm sure, but the anonymity of the internet is both a comforting and terrifying thing once you start to develop some real personal relationships online. -Shy
  5.
Just curious James, are you going to pick another Event Master to replace White or are we looking at Otaku Idol 3 being held at some stage in the near future ?
Otaku Idol 3!! Yes!! :p But seriously, this is one of those great ideas that got lost in the shuffle of Otaku Idol 2. I know there are a lot of members (myself included) who would love the chance to pitch some more Community Events. [strike]Allamorph[/strike] Wondershot, for example, came up with an awesome idea for 'Otaku Talent Night' during Final Quest for Glory 2, but we ultimately decided to run the Bermuda Triangle Mystery instead. A Suggestions thread would give everyone an opportunity to look at the idea, pick it apart, and find a way to make it work. More importantly the thread would probably serve as a good way to gauge member interest in a particular event. If one idea gets a lot of response then we'd obviously know what to run with. -Shy
  6.
Well, I frankly just have trouble believing it's the age thing. That's like, so immature and overly dramatic to count as a "confession." Not trying to be rude, just saying it's no big deal.
I dunno, having been around at the time I remember that Justin's 'confession' was pretty shocking at the time. And a lot of what he says is true, even on an internet message board people tend to make certain judgements about a person based on their age, location, whatever. According to Otakupedia we're coming up to almost five years to the day of your 'confession' Kam, so I think the time for you to feel any guilt over what has happened has long since passed. I've always considered you a great member and a friend, so let us move on. Jenna's departure from OB had nothing to do with you, so I wouldn't bother feeling any guilt over that, either. -Shy
  7.
I do believe this has been suggested before: Community Events Suggestion I was in favor of the idea then and I still am. I think there are a lot of ideas out there just waiting to be put into action.
Yeah, Mom's idea is obviously the inspiration here, and I've been hoping to get this up and running for a while. White's involvement in Community Events has kind of declined recently, though, so I was hoping we could build some more interest in the idea before someone ultimately creates it. Revolver: I'm not sure if a poll is neccessary, only because I can't imagine anyone objecting to the idea. Of course, if those people do exist they should feel free to post. -Shy
  8. Community Events are one of the most unique and exciting parts of OtakuBoards. In this forum members can take part in a variety of contests and community projects (?Events?) run by the Event Master. However, from personal experience I know that the Event Master can?t be the only one to come up with ideas for these events. So I?d like to propose creating a Community Events Suggestions Thread in the Community Events forum, a dedicated home where members can pitch, develop and work together on compelling and creative events for the OtakuBoards community. Obviously the forum is about getting as many members involved in these projects as possible, so anyone would be free to chime in with their own ideas and opinions. Using the suggestions in this thread as a basis, the Event Master would organize and run these events with their creator. This would hopefully remove a lot of the burden of coming up with original events from the Event Master, while also encouraging members to take a more active role in the site. More importantly, it would help ensure that we have a steady stream of active events taking place in my favorite forum. -Shy :whoops:
  9.
Doctor Rhodes made a mental note of staying close to the officers while on board the craft. Though she had helped to design some of the weapons being used by the crew, Nakeisha had very little experience in actually firing them. Two officers and a translator?, she thought to herself, I?d feel just as safe entering that space station with my grandmother?? Kendra Erickson had a lot to answer for, but that would have to wait until she returned. Right now the young doctor?s focus was on ready her gear. Few members of the crew seemed concerned about the dangers involved, something that Dr. Rhodes felt she needed to overcompensate for. Even her roommate, Dr. Catherine Sanderson, had decided to grab a bite to eat rather than prepare! ?Captain Schovick,? Nakeisha asked as she reached into her backpack and withdrew her sidearm, ?I don?t think I?m going to have room for this? thing. Can you return it to the armory for me?? Theresa rolled her eyes as she hesitantly grabbed the pistol from the doctor. ?It?s probably best you hold onto this, Doctor Rhodes. What exactly do you need the rest of this stuff for, anyway?? ?You?ve got to be kidding!? Nakeisha huffed as she sorted through her enormous bag, ?Rebreather, CPT, EMR, liveDroor, exothermal responders, plasma scope? I?m only carrying the basics.? ?Being prepared is one thing,? Michael said with a smirk, ?But taking all of your personal effects on every mission is a little extreme.? ?So is sending an engineer from the private sector on board a hostile alien craft,? Dr. Rhodes replied as she glared as Kendra, ?Don?t think for a moment that I?m not going to report this to the The Federation?s Humanities Inquisitor? ?You stopped being a civilian when you boarded this craft, Dr. Rhodes,? Colonel DeSouza clenched his fist as he spoke, ?Please learn to respect your superiors orders so that we can run this investigation effectively.? Officer Schovick handed Nakeisha back her weapon. Marcus nodded in silent approval. ?Very well, Colonel,? she replied, ?I suppose I can do without most of these instruments, even though a much less experienced engineer might not be able to. Just let me change into my vacuum suit...? The crew?s collective jaw dropped. ?Vacuum? suit?? Michael was for the first time at a loss for words, ?You?ve got to be joking!? ?There?s no way of telling how breaching the space station?s hull might effect its? atmosphere,? she said as she headed to a private room to change, ?But if the rest of you want to risk your lives on Ms. Erickson?s unproven measurements feel free.?
10.
Anyway, the bit with Dr. Rhodes at the end there, I figured with how she dragged 'proper' tools and equipment along that she showed up carrying something weird or eccentric. Which is why Michael is thinking, what is she thinking? I can change that if you wish Shy. Still I just can't imagine her showing up without doing something. Though I didn't specify what so I wouldn't mess up whatever you have in mind Shy, well if you have something in mind that is.
Oh, you'll see what Nakeisha is thinking soon enough. I had to read the post a few times to make sure I didn't miss the park where you explained what she was holding, but thank you for leaving it open for me. I'm just going to post a short bit about her 'equipment' and then I'll be ready to board. -Shy Edit: Posted!
  11. Even adding just one more sticky thread to each forum would create a lot of mess and clutter. I'm going to have to agree with Des on this one, DeeBee. As far as I'm concerned Hardwired and Anime Lounge have too many stickies as it is. Having an official favorites threads for each thread directory seems perfectly fine, though. I'm a little surprised we aren't doing that already. -Shy
  12. It appears that Kei and I are going to investigate El Chupacabra being hunted by Elvis in Mexico.... that can't be right, can it? Also I included a bit about Loren having to meet with her publisher shortly, which is why she seems so short at the meeting (no pun intended, I think.) -Shy

    Weekly World News

Liam slowly scanned the crowded ‘Bullpen‘ with his eyes. With so many people in the room it was surprising how quiet this meeting was. He wondered if they weren’t too afraid of Loren to speak up; he knew that was definitely case with him. “M-Mrs…. F-Fignon?” He asked sheepishly as Loren took a sip from her ‘The Bitch is Back’ coffee mug. The woman cringed in response to hearing her name being called. “What is it, Ian?” “Liam.” “Sure.” “I got this letter earlier,” Liam said sheepishly, pulling the envelope from his jacket, “And I was hoping that you would--” Loren quickly snatched the letter from Liam’s hand and tossed it onto the floor. “LOCAL BOY RECEIVES LETTER; MAILMAN SUSPECTED!” She announced to the room./ “Er, um…” “Talk to me if you have a story, Ian. The people in this room are far too important to deal with you and your newbie questions,” Loren motioned for Naomi, “Jergunson!” Naomi dropped her clipboard in shock. “Me, chief?” “Yes. You’re deal with Schuster and his newbie questions. Until then… someone find a real story for these two.” Several voices started calling to the two reporters, each suggesting a story more bizarre than the next. Time travel, government conspiracies, talking frogs, Liam couldn’t make out everything being said to him. Naomi began writing notes of what she was hearing, hoping to make sense of it later. Liam felt a strange force pushing him from behind, not entirely realizing that his editor-in-chief was forcibly kicking he and his partner out of the room. “I’ll save a space for your article on page 24, 5 column inches, next to the beauty supply ads. Naomi raised an eyebrow out of the door of the offices. “5 inches? You’re kidding, right?” “That’s prime real estate Jergunson. Show me your chops with this article and maybe you’ll get a little more down the line.” “Um.. Thanks boss?” Liam replied. “Now everyone get out! I’ve got a meeting with the publisher in 15 minutes!!” A small stampede of copy editors, reporters and photographers rushed out of the office, almost knocking over Naomi and Liam in the process. A loud slam of the door echoed throughout the office, a signal for the two reporters to get on their way. “So, Naomi,” the young man extended his hand towards her, “I’m Liam Schuster. It’s nice to meet you.” “Naomi Jergunson, nice to meet you. Let’s get started on that story, shall we?” They stared at Naomi’s notes for only a moment before realizing how terrible her handwriting was. With everyone calling out story ideas to her so quickly she never had a chance to turn the page. As a result several dozen story suggestions were written over others, making the entire page an indecipherable mess. “Elvis… hunts… Chupacabra in… Mexican tourist town?” Liam struggled to make sense of what he was reading, “That can’t be right, can it?” “I’m not sure. I can't read my handwriting either,” she replied dryly, “Just fill up your car with gas and let’s go.”
14.
As far as changing and such...I actually think we are constantly rejecting the status quo at OtakuBoards. I personally love to change things; I wish I could work full-time on OB, lol. Unfortunately when things do change some people tend to say "Things are changing too much, please keep some things the same like we remember them!"
We just want things to be totally new and unexpected, yet not really change at all. You should be used to our unreasonable demands by now, James. -Shy :whoops:
  15.
I do think that structural changes need to be made across the entire site, but not for the purpose of making the site less "uptight" but simply because the current set-up is kind of stagnant. I don't think we need a fancy new OB Evolution skin for that kind of reworking.
Agreed. Over the years we've gotten a little too comfortable with the status quo, making things a little bit stale as a result. This isn't just about staff or admins; certainly members are as much to blame as anyone else for declining activity. Creative thinking and new ideas are going to be needed if we hope to make OB appealing to the next generation of potheads. -Shy
  16.
I don't know if I'm being too hasty, but I got the feeling the editor-in-chief gave my character to get rolling, so I did. Just tell me if my character needs to stay in the building for a longer while, Josh. Also, my post brought up the question of the location of the World Weekly News office. I was assuming it'd be somewhere in the hot California (in which case it would be possible to drive to Arizona by a car in a moderate amount of time), but please correct me if you want the location to be something else.
We can be based in California, that's fine. Instead of Los Angeles, though, let us be based in the coastal city of San Diego. You and Yoshi can begin your trek out to Arizona if you'd like. You two seem like an unlikely pair, so it only makes sense that you team-up like this. That leaves me with Kei and Gavin with Blayze? Premonition appears to not want to post, so we'll assume that he's no longer a participant. Raiha: What exactly do you have planned for your character while we're out investigating? -Shy
  17.
In my post, the two photographers discussed about an article about crops circles in Kansas and another about a ghost van in Arizona. These ideas can of course be scrapped or postponed in the upcoming meeting.
Either of those ideas are fine. Once the stories are decided on I'm not sure how I'm going to split up the group. I suggest you guys use this thread to split into smaller groups for you to investigate the stories themselves. Great job so far guys. Hopefully the rest of the players will begin posting soon. -Shy
  18. I'm proud of Gavin's ability to lie about his own shortcomings. Anyway, I suppose above all things I'm most proud of the person I've become and the person I am still becoming. It took me quite a while to realize just how awesome I am, and now that I know life is much more enjoyable. My friends, my boyfriend, my dog... there's not a lot in my life I'm not proud of. I'm very fortunate to be the person I am, and have the life that I do. Even if you had asked me two years ago I never would have thought I could end up living such a stable and pleasant life. So yeah, I'm proud of my existance I suppose. You're all very lucky to know me. -Shy
  19.
Liam Schuster took a deep breath before walking through the front door of the Weekly World News offices. Although he had visited before during his brief job interview, the crowded newsroom seemed like a totally different place now that he was an official employee. The headquarters of the famed Weekly World News were a labyrinth of paperwork, cubicles, and knick-knacks, yet somehow in this environment the most widely read tabloid on Earth was published every week. It was loud, it was foreign, and now to the young employee it was home. This was a far cry from the laboratories and libraries he dreamed of working in someday, but it would do for now. After all, a paycheck was a paycheck, and it certainly beat waiting on tables. A heavyset, balding courier pushed a large cart of envelopes past Liam. The two locked eyes for a moment “Mr. Schuster?” the stranger asked, sorting through the mail in front of him, “I‘ve got a letter for you…” Liam’s eyes widened as the man handed him a small, nondescript looking envelope. There was no return address, only a stamp and the name ‘Mr. Schuster’ on front. “H-how did you know who I was, and what is this?” The man continued sorting through letters as he pushed the cart past Liam. “Heck if I know kid,” he replied, “I’m only a mind reader. I don’t have X-ray vision...” Liam smiled politely and stuffed the strange delivery into his pocket to read later. Right now he had to navigate his way across the room to meet with his new boss, Editor-In-Chief Loren Fignon. What strange people here,Liam thought as he walked through the hallway, I can't imagine what my parents chose this line of work in the first place... Phone calls, shouting, and bizarre dialects could be heard bouncing back and forth across the walls. This was normal background noise for any respectable publication, but to an outsider like Liam it seemed terrifying. The few staff members outside of their cubicles seemed like a very eclectic bunch. Liam was not the most fashionable man in New York, but the rhinestone-covered leather jackets and tie-dyed burkas others were wearing made him look like the homecoming queen in comparison. “Excuse me?” Liam nervously asked an odd looking man in a trench coat and mirrored glasses, “I’m trying to find the Editor-In-Chief. Today is my first day on the job, and she said to…” The unusual figure raised his sunglasses to reveal a pair of bloodshot red eyes. “You can see me!?” There was an awkward silence. “Uhhh… of course I can,” Liam awkwardly replied, “…Why… wouldn’t I?” The man withdrew a small tape recorder from his coat pocket and began to speak into it. “Fascinating. Absolutely fascinating,” he whispered, “It appears the effects of the serum were only temporary…” Liam backed away cautiously before accidentally slamming into a set of glass doors, knocking over several signs that were attached to them. Immediately he leaned in pick them up, reading them as he did. “WWN Bullpen? Huh?” There was a loud tapping on the glass behind Liam, startling him once again. He turned around to discover his new boss, Loren Fignon, standing on the other side of the door with an annoyed editorial board behind her. Loren was a short woman, she had no trouble intimidating the young reporter twice her size. “Schuster. Get in here,” she said as she motioned for him with her index finger, “Now.”

  22. I tried to follow my mission briefing as best I could. My initial post had a lot more tension between Kendra and Nakeisha, but I toned it down to something a little less aggressive. I have no doubt that there will more confrontations between the two in the future, so I don't want to push things to the next level until we 'earn it.' Feel free to put Nakeisha on the boarding party for the space station. It seems like fitting revenge. Heh. -Shy
  23.
Nakeisha buried her face in the navigation screen for several moments before realizing that nobody was paying attention to her anymore. During this time the crew of the Agro Navis had reassembled, with everyone else now focused on the seemingly abandoned space station before them. “What are you people looking at?” Nakeisha asked the group. After a moment of silence Dr. Sanderson finally replied. “There’s something unsettling about this space station, Dr. Rhodes,” Catherine said as she remained fixated on the video screens, “Michael, can you make out what those faded symbols on the side of it are?” Michael Travis continued to focus the ship’s cameras on the mysterious writings. “It certainly doesn’t look like the Creid,” he said, “But even in the known inhabited worlds there are literally thousands of different dialects and written languages. It’s going to take me a while to figure it out…” Dr. Rhodes nodded as she entered a few keystrokes onto her computer console. "That gives me plenty of time then." Suddenly all of the video images displaying the space station were replaced with ones of the gravitational anomalies. Nakeisha walked towards the front of the bridge and began to speak, hoping she could complete her train of thought before a certain crew member could interrupt. “If everyone doesn’t mind taking a break from their… gawking, I’ve made some very exciting findings in regards to these unexplained gravitational fluxes…” Kendra stepped forward to confront her subordinate. “Those findings can wait for our meeting. I’d like to ask that you run everything through me before explaining your hypotheses to the crew. They have more pressing duties to attend to.” Nakeisha sighed. “Oh ‘pressing‘ is exactly what this is!” Dr. Rhodes said as she locked eyes with Kendra, “Let me make this brief for you with shorter attention spans… “At first I was under the impression that these anomalies were occurring in response to us entering the system. But I’ve been monitoring these, and there doesn’t appear to be a set pattern or duration for any of these generated gravity wells. They seem to be happening totally independent of us.” “That’s very nice, Dr. Rhodes,” Kendra replied dryly, “But at this point in the investigation I don’t see how that’s very relevant.” “They seem to be happening randomly, yes, but if this were true that space station would have been destroyed by now. Something more than probability is keeping that object from being eaten up by one of these gravitational anomalies.” Alex raised his eyebrow in curiosity. “So you think they‘re just trying to make these things look random?” “It’s too early to draw that conclusion, Mr. Bishop, but I’m sure that’s something Kendra can investigate when she boards the vessel.” “Excuse me, Dr. Rhodes?!” “Well I’m certainly not going on board that graveyard. It‘s dangerous,” Nakeisha replied dismissively as she exited the bridge, “I'll be in my quarters if you need anything.”
Okay. The following players have been accepted into the RPG! I'm feeling generous!
Nuevoxraiha Premonition Gavin Yoshi Blayze Kei Sandy Sadly Warmside was not accepted due to his sign-up not really following my thread rating. Let that be a warning to everyone else, I suppose. This is a [PG] RPG and it will stay [PG].
Now that you've been accepted I'd like to ask that each player create a brief character description for the RPG in this thread. Each one must contain the following:

Name
Age
Profession (Reporter, Editor, Photographer, etc.)
Area(s) of Expertise (Cryptozoology, UFOs, Elvis, Religious Prophecies, Conspiracy Theories, etc.)
Physical Description (No pictures, please!)
Brief History and Personality Description
Name: Liam Schuster Age: 23 Profession: Junior Reporter Area(s) of Expertise: Science. Physical Description: Liam is of average height with short dark hair and a slender build. One of his eyes is green, while the other is blue. Most people don’t even notice, but this is something Liam is extremely self-conscious about. More often than not he will dress casually when on the job, going for jeans and a t-shirt unless the situation absolutely demands it. Liam isn’t necessarily unattractive, but his pale complexion and average size make it difficult for him to capture the attention of the fairer sex. Brief History and Personality Description: Liam Schuster is the only child of a renown Boston publishing family. Sadly Liam did not inherit his parents’ gift for language, and he found at an early age that his true calling was science. This greatly disappointed both his mother and father, but they were generally too occupied with their careers to try and persuade their son to do otherwise. With few friends Liam spent most of his free time following his passion, and he developed a keen analytical mind. Matters dealing with the supernatural have never been of interest to Liam, nor does he believe in anything that can’t be explained by science. Liam was accepted into several prominent universities after high school, but his father refused to pay for the tuition unless he become a Journalism major. He refused, and instead tried to support himself by working odd jobs through his education. Sadly, this added stress of working was too much to balance with his studies, and Liam was dropped from his university in the middle of his third semester. With few alternatives Liam has decided to apply for a job with the Weekly World News, hoping that his father’s name will get him in the door. Liam has never read the publication before, but he feels that earning a regular paycheck will be better than going back to his parents for help. Liam is a intelligent, headstrong and extremely naive. He believes he knows how the world works, but in almost every situation he is proven wrong. Few have any trouble getting along with Liam due to his friendly demeanor, but more often than not his so-called “friends” take advantage of him at every turn. - - - - - - Sign-Ups are now closed. The Weekly World News Underground will be created shortly, so look forward to that for more information about the RPG. I hope to have it launched by Friday. Thanks again! -Shy
  25. First of all, congratulations to Aaryanna and indifference on the soon-to-be-completion of your first Otaku Event.
