?Give me a few minutes, Ape?? Sanguinius said as he reached into his pocket and withdrew a screwdriver, ?A signal like this would require a lot of power, so it?s possible that it?s being powered through OBCTU headquarters somehow.? ?Terror -- St-- Error!! Terror -- St-- Error!? He placed his hand on Gadget?s shoulder. ?Do not worry, comrade. I?m going to find El Kabong, and then we?ll simply disable the power until your signal is no longer overridden.? ?Excellent work, Agent. Keep me posted about your progress.? He quickly exited with sick bay. Sanguinius took me by surprise. It seemed only yesterday he was our terrorist prisoner, but now he had become one of my most trusted aides. Perhaps there was hope for the terrorist scum, after all. Only a moment later Agent Fluff entered. She carried a serious expression on her face, and I instantly knew something was wrong. ?Gape Ape,? she said softly, ?It?s my Mother?? A million different thoughts popped into my head, each one more terrible the last. ?Is she okay?? ?I?m afraid not,? the young agent replied, handing me a letter, ?She feels the terrorists have gone too far this time. Agent Mother is resigning from her position, and wanted you to have her letter of resignation.? I nodded and placed the letter in my pants pocket. With so much still going on I would have to make time to read the note later. ?Very well,? I said, ?Your Mother was an excellent member of the OBCTU, you know. You have very big shoes to fill, Fluff.? Agent Fluff grinned. ?Pssh! Once you see the event that Agent Crystia and I have planned you won?t be thinking that anymore.? ?Events?!? a familiar voice called out from around the corner, ?Don?t leave me out of the conversation!? Agent Webster popped his head out from behind the corner, starting both Fluff and I. ?Wesbter!? You?re back!? I shouted. ?It would appear so, Grape Ape.? ?How was Portugal?? ?Salty. Did you receive my correspondence about my event?? I nodded. ?That I did. OtakuBoards Talent Night seems like a very solid idea. Having members post videos, short skits and songs in a competition would be a great deal of fun?? Agent Fluff rolled her eyes. ?But I?m afraid at this point in time it may be too involved for the members of OtakuBoards. You see, we need something very accessible which doesn?t require a great deal of commitment. The idea of having members post videos, songs and short skits is really fascinating? but I don?t know if the OB membership can support something like that?? Agent Webster sighed. ??But fortunately for us OB has an extremely large community to draw from. Adam?s recent Haruhi Dance Contest at theOtaku.com proves that there are members who are capable of creating such videos, they might just not be on the boards themselves.? ?Well I guess that means my event is the winner by default,? Agent Fluff said with a smile on her face. ?Who is this girl, anyhow?? Webster asked, She seems to be more than a little on the aggressive side.? ?Agent Fluff at your service!? She said as she extended her hand towards Webster. ?Oh, I see,? he moaned, ?Charming.? I coughed. ?As I was saying? I don?t think it?s a bad idea, there just isn?t the demand for it currently. I?m going to try and discuss it with Adam? perhaps we can launch Otaku Talent Night as an event that crosses over between OB and theOtaku.? ?That would be wonderful, sir.? ?Now what about me?? Fluff asked impatiently. ?Yes, your idea for OtakuBoards Bermuda Triangle was also quite strong. I like how it took something we did last year, the OB Scavenger Hunt, and kind of pushed it to the next level. ?However, you had also proposed the idea of doing it as a ?Death Card RPG? similar to ?Labyrinth? and ?The Panopticon.? An RPG is unsuitable for this current challenge for a lot of reasons, the main one being that we want to get as many members to participate as possible. Something that members don?t have to sign up for would be much better for this.? ?I see?? she replied. ?But having said that I think it will still be quite popular. I suggest three rounds of ten missing items each, and then a final round where the top three (or so) can compete for the top prize. Maybe we can also give them a custom user title or something, assuming they aren?t a staff member or something.? ?So is OB Bermuda Triangle the one we?re running with?? Webster asked. ?I believe so, but I?m very serious about doing Otaku Talent Night in the future.? Agent Webster saluted and began to walk away. ?I think I?m going to go try to find Sanguinius. I?m sure that without me he?s gotten himself into all kinds of trouble...? Aaryanna and/or indifference please PM me before you post your event. I'd like to see what your first post looks like. - Grape Ape

Exactly what category do I fall under? Hm? Anyway, this seems like a really ambitious project. I have a lot of questions regarding how HP/MP/Levels would affect the role-playing itself. Perhaps members could gain XP by posting, and every handful of posts they would level up. Even with a small group of players it would be a nightmare to organize, but I'm sure you understand that already. You'd need an Underground thread to manage all of the XP, and probably multiple threads in the Square. Each thread could be a separate location, like a dungeon or something. So you'd have [Grand: Forest Temple] or something. Maybe certain dungeons can only be accessed by characters once they reach a certain level, and those higher-level dungeons give players more experience for posting in them? You'd want someone in charge of the individual dungeons (A Dungeon Master, if you will) to create the various challenges that the adventuring parties would take place in. Players could organize their parties in the Underground thread, which could also serve as a tavern of sorts. Um. Yeah. That's all of my ideas for now. It really needs a new title. -Shy

I have no problem posting in the challenge, although I really don't want to go first. However, the members who post first will have the first opportunity to use up all of the good cliches. We definitely need to work together on this first post. I vote we come up with a list of cliches via PM/IM and have our original poster work off of that. Unless I misread the rules, there's nothing saying that these individual posts can't be a collaboration. -Shy

I escorted Gadget to the sick bay, my fourth trip this week. With Mother obviously distracted by our new “visitor” and Ploppy away on important business it looked like I was responsible for looking after the confused and disoriented agent. In all of my time of knowing Gadget he had never been anything but reliable and coherent. I began to wonder if perhaps something sinister was taking place without the Counter-Terrorism Unit realizing it. “Terror -- Error! Terror -- Error!…” Gadget began repeating this phrase endlessly as I placed him onto one of the beds. I poured a glass of water and was about to drink it when the room began to tremble. My hand slipped, pouring the liquid all over my injured comrade. “Whoops!” I said, ”Sorry about that.“ To my surprise Gadget did not react at all. He merely kept repeating that same nonsense about terror as the water dripped down his face and onto his trench coat. Sanguinius rushed into the room. “Grape Ape! Drei picked up minor seismic activity coming from the Terrorist Cell.” “You mean they were hit by an earthquake?” “It’s far too weak to be a quake, even a small one. We think it was some kind of explosive.” I nodded my head. Of course! It appeared Janus’ mission was much more… exciting than I had originally planned it. I only hoped that the CTU agents remained unharmed. “Very interesting news, Sanguinius. Please keep me posted.” “Terror -- Error! Terror -- Error!” Sanguinius stared at Gadget, obviously confused. “Is this guy alright?” Small electrical sparks began shooting out of Gadget’s eyes. “Terror -- Error! Terror -- Error!” “I’m not sure. You wouldn’t happen to be an expert in robotics, would you?” There was a moment of silence. “I don’t understand, Grape Ape. Exactly what is Gadget?” I pulled a chair closer to Gadget’s chair and motioned for Sanguinius to sit down. “I think you’ve proven your loyalty. It’s time I let you in on one of the biggest secrets in OtakuBoards History...” “Years ago the OtakuBoards Counter-Terrorism Unit had begun developing a highly advanced member substitute: The OtakuBots. These OtakuBots could take the form and posting style of any member, and were used to take over the duties of moderation when the real mods were away from the site….” The agent’s eyes widened in disbelief as I told him the tale. This was obviously a lot for anyone, even an experienced member like Sanguinius, to take in. “…They were incredibly cunning, durable, and lifelike, so much so that nobody had realized that these OtakuBots were systematically kidnapping and replacing prominent staff members. If it weren’t for a fault in Zehbot’s programming we may have never realized what was happening. The OtakuBot revolution was short-lived, but Ploppy kept several models to… experiment with.” “Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” I lowered my head in shame. “That’s right. Agent Gadget, also known as Treble, is really a reconfigured OtakuBot from an older version of the site. The real Treble has been missing in action for years, and now…” “-- Terror -- Error! Terror -- Error!” “I’m afraid this artificial version seems to be experiencing some sort of malfunction.” Agent Sanguinius smashed his fist against Gadget’s bed. “I knew it!” he shouted, “This explains all of the weird equipment I saw in the underground Terrorist Cell.” “What?” “When I worked with Charlie Bin Laden he always seemed to be toying around with strange pieces of equipment. I was never allowed to know what they were… I think they’re working on something -- something BIG.” "You think they're building OtakuBots of their own?" "Not only that," he replied as he began pacing around the room, "I think they may have come up with a way to override the default programming! I'm not sure, though. Webster is the communications expert in the group and he's away on business..." "And Ploppy is gone as well. How on Earth can we get to the bottom of this?" Sanguinius saluted me. "Don't worry, Grape Ape. Whatever might be overriding Gadget's programming would need an extremely powerful signal to do so. I think I know just who to turn to for help..."

What kinds of threads are and are not appropriate for the Adventure Square?
Shy replied to Gavin's topic in Help & Feedback
Obviously we all want RPGs to maintain a certain quality on OB. I think projects like Panopticon/Silver One/etc. make this site special; but I don't want things to get to a point where if an RPG isn't on that level it's considered 'spam.' OB has all kinds of writers, so we need to be respectful of that when creating and enforcing our rules. Also, I think it's important that The Square remain open to new ideas. There is obviously a demand for non-RPG games like OB Survivor and Clandestine Clues, so until we get a Games forum I see no reason they can't co-exist here with traditional RPGs. In the past I know I've been too harsh in enforcing these things, so I'm not trying to attack anyone in particular when I ask the mods to 'lighten up' on this point. After all, it's always been the innovative and groundbreaking projects (RPGs or not) that keep me coming back to this place after all of these years. -Shy -
These are some great articles. High-fives all around! That Panopticon article is enormous. Just from reading it I get a strong sense that all of the players and creators have put a lot of thought and effort it. I'm very tempted to throw my hat into the ring during the next installment of the Death Card series. Of course, that's assuming I make it past sign-ups... I'll definitely second the decision to make 'Affection' OB's Member of the Month. In every thread I've encountered her she's always been extremely pleasant and thoughtful. There are some members who have been around for years who could probably learn a thing or two from her (myself included.) Anyway, this was a really interesting read. My expectations for an OB newspaper were pretty low, but you totally blew me away. I can't wait to read the next installment, and hopefully I can contribute some articles of my own. -Shy

I post almost exclusively in The Arena and I really hadn't noticed. From a creative standpoint I could see why the accidental filtering may upset people, but it's not a huge deal... most of the time people can tell what you're trying to say anyway. The only annoying thing will be when the censor is lifted and all of the old swearing is still blacked out. -Shy

To-Do

Family game night with Aaryanna and Mom.
Solve mysteries in the bayou with Arcadia.
Visit famous American gravesites with Sara, and send our friends postcards from them.
Wander around Atlantic City totally wasted with Charles and Alex
See a silent film with Tony in Los Angeles, and then complain afterwards about how much talkies suck.
James.
Trap Sandy and White in a locked room, to see who makes it out alive.
See the Alamo with Ken, because I honestly don't know what else there is to do in Texas.
Nerdsy needs to see what a real comic book shop looks like.
Save Mitch from his land-locked blues. Coffee sounds good.
Visit an Irish pub with Gavin and Raiha. Leave when things get awkward.
Definitely not Dead, because I wasn't on his list. Jerk.
I've been very fortunate to have met as many OB-ers as I have... Southern California seems to be a prime location for these things. In fact, I just saw Adam today at Anime Expo (which was kind of surreal for a variety of reasons.) -Shy

I just saw 'Sicko' today and I thought it was great. Obviously Moore has a particular viewpoint he is trying to get across, but health care is an issue that everyone can rally behind regardless of what their political party is. I was very relieved when the film stopped focusing on medical horror stories and turned its attention towards how medical care is handled in other parts of the world. Those scenes were very effective, but the most interesting and informative scenes took place outside of the United States. While I knew that Canada, France, etc. had superior health care systems I had no idea the level of care those governments give to their people. I found myself embarrassed by America at several points, and kinda started wondering exactly how I could go about gaining British citizenship... heh. It should be noted that the pacing is a lot slower than 'Fahrenheit 9/11.' The film had no problem holding my interest, but there weren't any 'home run' moments that are going to make you walk out of the theater ready to change the world. This only goes to show how complicated the issue is, and what a difficult job fixing the system is going to be. With the 2008 election coming up I only hope that this movie motivates candidates to make health care a top priority. The way a lot of major media outlets have been targeting Moore without even seeing the film is ridiculous. -Shy

I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I couldn't help by try to contribute somehow. 14. Zix Zix is an island nation of farmers, artists and priests. The government is currently ruled by the beautiful and wise Princess Dorlene, but her crown will soon be passed on once she reaches the age of 16, as is tradition. A new, younger princess will be chosen by Dorlene on her final day as head of state, but it is common knowledge that she is reluctant to give up her title. Of course, the role of princess is merely to be a figurehead, and most day-to-day operations are run by her advisors and the Zix high clerics. Dorlene?s only true power lies in her command of The Zixish Royal Navy, which ranks among the largest in the world. The capital of Zix is the ?Clockwork City? of Karisia. Highly advanced subways and railcars once carried Karisia?s citizens in and out of the city, and some were so reliable that they survived The Great Fall and are still used today. A much larger network was once used by all of Zix, but most of the pieces to the system were salvaged during the nation?s reconstruction. Due to this and Karisia?s remote location behind the river very little contact is made between the capital and the nation?s other cities. In many ways Zix is a land of two peoples. Few citizens on the outskirts and the coast have any formal education, a stark contrast to the charmed life of a Karisian. While the people of the farms are fairly simple-minded, Karisians pride themselves on their intellect and devout faith. Despite this (or perhaps because off) this education, Karisians are extremely indecisive. Many are active members in multiple political parties and religions. They try extremely hard to be ?modern,? and will go to extreme lengths to do so. This open-mindedness is often a source of ridicule by surrounding nations. The archipelago to the north of Zix has long been a source of contention between Zix and its neighbor to the east. This is a direct result of Princess Dorlene?s aggressive use of The Zixish Royal Navy to create a hegemony in the region. Zix is currently using several of the small islands as military outposts, perhaps in preparation for a much larger assault on the main continent. The climate throughout the country is hot, dry and often highly unpredictable. Crop growth tends to fluctuate wildly from season to season, and most farmers barely produce enough to feed themselves and their families. Rainfall is more regular in the west, and many Karisians see this as a sign of approval from whichever deity they are worshipping that month. The Zixish people are starving both culturally and literally. Many feel a war is what would help to unite the nation and bring new prosperity to the land. -Shy

Drei was kind enough to wrap my leg in a bandage as we sat in the medical bay. The bite wasn't anything seriously, but I would probably be limping for a few days. I certainly hope that dog is house trained. Just the same, I could trust the rest of my team and knew they would be able to reach a final decision about the Community Event soon and without my help. Janus entered the room with a grim expression on his face. Something was definitely troubling him. But then again, who wasn't troubled by this recent string of events? "Ape, may I speak to you for a moment?" "Why of course, Janus." He uncomfortably motioned towards Drei. "I'd prefer we discuss this alone." Drei rolled her eyes. "I'm a member of the Triad, I said as I placed my hand on Janus' shoulder, "Anything you can say in front of me you can say in front of them, and it will be held in the strictest confidece." "Very well then. It's about the rest of the team..." "They are a little eccentric. Yes." "Extremely so," he replied, "I'm afraid that maybe they are holding us back from what we're trying to accomplish with this war." "These boards are just as much theirs as they are ours. While I admit they can be wild at times, it's imperative that we maintain a united front..." I locked eyes with Drei. She nodded, and left the room quietly, closing the door behind her. "...But I do understand that there are some things that the youngers members don't need to be a part of." Janus raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "I don't understand, sir." "Between Japan and 'Muffin' the terrorist side has done an excellent job of embarrassing me-- no, this whole organization in front of my peers. Worse yet, Nomura was privy to information regarding our plans for the final battle..." I reached into my jacket and withdrew a small pistol. "How do you still have that? Those were banned during the Tenchi Wars." "That's not important. It's yours now." I handed the weapon to Janus and he began to inspect it. "As you know, it's a modified non-lethal Mod Rod used to close threads, sometimes referred to a 'Lock.' You and your teammates will be wielding these on your new mission..." "Mission?" "I would have gone myself, but my recent injury could hurt our rate of success. You need to go in my place. Your mission briefing and the others will be waiting for you at the rendezvous point." "I won't fail you, Grape Ape."

The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty is an annual Community Event created by Shy in 2005. At the start of each year fifty members, threads and things are selected as being ?nifty? by the community, thus creating a fun and nostalgic look back on the site?s past year. The Nifty Fifty was designed to be a more objective and inclusive version of the popular Otaku Awards. Covering a wide variety of topics, the Otaku Awards? winners were always the site?s most popular members and often OtakuBoards staff. This was because the Otaku Awards relied on member voting to decide the winners, which meant they were little more than a popularity contest. 2004?s Otaku Awards proved to be the most biased yet, and it was ultimately decided that they should be discontinued in favor of something new. For the Nifty Fifty members are allowed to nominate up to ten items. However, unlike the Otaku Awards the winners selected in the Nifty Fifty are not necessarily the fifty who have received the most nominations. At the start of the nominations process a diverse group of members, ?The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty Committee? are selected by the Event Master to compile a list of the fifty nominations they feel best represent the community. Each member of the committee comes up with an individual list, and from those the final list is compiled by the Event Master. Individual banners for each of the fifty winners were added to 2006?s awards, adding a new visual appeal to the event. These banners are created by volunteers from within the community, and have proven to be just as prized as the awards themselves. Unfortunately the creation of these banners take a great deal of time, and contributes to the nearly month-long gap between the end of nominations and the announcement of the winners. While the demand for voting-based awards come up from time to time, members have fully embraced the concept of the Otaku Awards. Each annual installment of the event is more popular than the last. -

Several of us were gathered in the cafeteria, eating dinner, sharing a few stories and remembering our fallen comrade, Peacock. The events of the past few days had been both tragic and unexpected: Karumi-Chan?s reveal, Ploppy?s brush with death, Peacock?s passing, Japan?s sudden betrayal and now? Fluff. Things were happening so fast, perhaps too fast. I was spending so much time focusing on the current crises that I hardly touched my food. Mother was the first to notice. Of course. ?Was there something wrong with your dinner, Grape Ape? Mother asked. ?No, not at all,? I said with a sigh, ?I just keep thinking about everything that had happened, and almost wonder if we?re not in over our heads.? ?Ha!? Sour Candy shouted from across the room, a candy cigarette in his mouth, ?We should @&$#)@# march right on down to the enemy base, grab ?em by their collars and drag those #*****&% into jail where they belong! I?M THROUGH PLAYING GAMES, SOLDIERS -- YEEHAW!? Sour Candy?s spirit and enthusiasm were welcome, even if they were a little intimidating. El Kabong, who was seated next to Sour Candy, picked up his dinner and quickly seated himself on the opposite end of the cafeteria. ?I?m just glad Fluff wasn?t around to hear that?? Drei said drly as she rubbed her forehead, "That's some harsh language, if you can even call it that." Throne coughed to get the attention of the group. ?Anyway. I think what Sour Candy is trying to say is that we should be more proactive in our war on OtakuBoards Terror. This Community Event should be a reflection of that.? ?Agreed, Starbucks said in between sips of her Mochacinno, ?We need to come up with something strong, robust and maybe even a little nutty for our project. We need our coffee to say ?We?re not afraid of you terrorists. We?re gonna drink whatever we want!'? Wander turned towards Starbucks, her eyebrow raised. ?Coffee?? ?I didn?t say coffee, I said ?Event.?? ?No you did not, dear. I even heard it, and I?ve got my headphones cranked up to 11.? The room nodded in agreement. Starbucks blushed. ?Oh. My? well what about my ?Otaku Bachelorette? idea? I admit I don't know the community very well anymore, but I imagine anime fans still go crazy over a moderately attractive female.? ?It?s true,? Sanguinius replied, ?They?re pretty pathetic sometimes.? El Kabong raised his hand to speak. ?And we can?t forget about Webster?s ?Otaku Talent Night? suggestion. As someone who is neither an Otaku nor talented I think it could be a lot of fun.? Drei quickly smacked El Kabong against the back of the head. ?Quiet, you.? I stood up and looked around the room. Surely between the 20-odd remaining members we could come up with something spectacular. If only Peacock were still around? ?Whichever event we choose, we need to do it soon. Gavin--? ?Janus.? Ploppy said over the intercom, ?He goes by Janus now.? ?Okay. Janus and Crystia were able to recover bits and pieces of information about our enemy?s forthcoming Community Event. They seem much more prepared than we are for this challenge, and it could be launched at any time. I?d like to see someone step forward and assume control of this operation.? It was at that moment I felt a sharp pain in the back of my leg, knocking me to the ground. Fearing the worst, I turned around to discover what looked like a fluffy white sheep tugging at my right calf with unbridled fury. ?Oh my goodness!? I shouted, trying to kick the beast away with my free leg, ?Get it off! Get it off!? Mother snapped her fingers and the monster instantly let go of me. ?Aaryanna!? Mother shouted at the? thing, ?Bad dog! Don?t bite Grape Ape!? The little ball of fur whimpered and bowed its? head. With a closer look I was able to recognize my attacker as being none other than Agent Fluff?s Bichon Frise, Aaryanna. ?How embarrassing,? Mother said as she patted the dog on the head, ?I thought my daughter would have known better than to drag you along for a dangerous war like this, Aaryanna. Oh well. The more the merrier, I suppose.? The entire group surrounded the animal, rubbing its? belly and awing every time it performed a new trick. ?I think I?m in love! Gurt shouted excitedly, ?It?s soooo cute! I came back to my feet. The back of my leg was in excruciating pain. ?Adorable. Drei.? I said softly. ?Yeah, Grapey?? ?I need you to escort me to the medical ward. I think this bite might need to be disinfected.?
