[size=1]Exactly what category do I fall under? Hm? Anyway, this seems like a really ambitious project. I have a lot of questions regarding how HP/MP/Levels would affect the role-playing itself. Perhaps members could gain XP by posting, and every handful of posts they would level up. Even with a small group of players it would be a nightmare to organize, but I'm sure you understand that already. You'd need an Underground thread to manage all of the XP, and probably multiple threads in the Square. Each thread could be a separate location, like a dungeon or something. So you'd have [Grand: Forest Temple] or something. Maybe certain dungeons can only be accessed by characters once they reach a certain level, and those higher-level dungeons give players more experience for posting in them? You'd want someone in charge of the individual dungeons (A Dungeon Master, if you will) to create the various challenges that the adventuring parties would take place in. Players could organize their parties in the Underground thread, which could also serve as a tavern of sorts. Um. Yeah. That's all of my ideas for now. It really needs a new title. -Shy[/size]

With Mother obviously distracted by our new “visitor” and Ploppy away on important business it looked like I was responsible for looking after the confused and disoriented agent. In all of my time of knowing Gadget he had never been anything but reliable and coherent. I began to wonder if perhaps something sinister was taking place without the Counter-Terrorism Unit realizing it. “[b]Terror -- Error! Terror -- Error!…[/b]” Gadget began repeating this phrase endlessly as I placed him onto one of the beds. I poured a glass of water and was about to drink it when the room began to tremble. My hand slipped, pouring the liquid all over my injured comrade. “[b]Whoops![/b]” I said, [b]”Sorry about that.“[/b] To my surprise Gadget did not react at all. He merely kept repeating that same nonsense about terror as the water dripped down his face and onto his trench coat. Sanguinius rushed into the room. “[b]Grape Ape! Drei picked up minor seismic activity coming from the Terrorist Cell.[/b]” “[b]You mean they were hit by an earthquake?[/b]” “[b]It’s far too weak to be a quake, even a small one. [size=1]Obviously we all want RPGs to maintain a certain quality on OB. I think projects like Panopticon/Silver One/etc. make this site special; but I don't want things to get to a point where if an RPG isn't on that level it's considered 'spam.' OB has all kinds of writers, so we need to be respectful of that when creating and enforcing our rules. Also, I think it's important that The Square remain open to new ideas. There is obviously a demand for non-RPG games like OB Survivor and Clandestine Clues, so until we get a Games forum I see no reason they can't co-exist here with traditional RPGs. In the past I know I've been too harsh in enforcing these things, so I'm not trying to attack anyone in particular when I ask the mods to 'lighten up' on this point. After all, it's always been the innovative and groundbreaking projects (RPGs or not) that keep me coming back to this place after all of these years. -Shy[/size]

Just from reading it I get a strong sense that all of the players and creators have put a lot of thought and effort it. I'm very tempted to throw my hat into the ring during the next installment of the Death Card series. Of course, that's assuming I make it past sign-ups... I'll definitely second the decision to make 'Affection' OB's Member of the Month. In every thread I've encountered her she's always been extremely pleasant and thoughtful. There are some members who have been around for years who could probably learn a thing or two from her (myself included.) Anyway, this was a really interesting read. [size=1]I just saw 'Sicko' today and I thought it was great. Obviously Moore has a particular viewpoint he is trying to get across, but health care is an issue that everyone can rally behind regardless of what their political party is. I was very relieved when the film stopped focusing on medical horror stories and turned its attention towards how medical care is handled in other parts of the world. Those scenes were very effective, but the most interesting and informative scenes took place outside of the United States. While I knew that Canada, France, etc. had superior health care systems I had no idea the level of care those governments give to their people. I found myself embarrassed by America at several points, and kinda started wondering exactly how I could go about gaining British citizenship... heh. It should be noted that the pacing is a lot slower than 'Fahrenheit 9/11.' The film had no problem holding my interest, but there weren't any 'home run' moments that are going to make you walk out of the theater ready to change the world. This only goes to show how complicated the issue is, and what a difficult job fixing the system is going to be. With the 2008 election coming up I only hope that this movie motivates candidates to make health care a top priority. The way a lot of major media outlets have been targeting Moore without even seeing the film is ridiculous. -Shy[/size]

The government is currently ruled by the beautiful and wise Princess Dorlene, but her crown will soon be passed on once she reaches the age of 16, as is tradition. A new, younger princess will be chosen by Dorlene on her final day as head of state, but it is common knowledge that she is reluctant to give up her title. Of course, the role of princess is merely to be a figurehead, and most day-to-day operations are run by her advisors and the Zix high clerics. Dorlene?s only true power lies in her command of The Zixish Royal Navy, which ranks among the largest in the world. The capital of Zix is the ?Clockwork City? of Karisia. Highly advanced subways and railcars once carried Karisia?s citizens in and out of the city, and some were so reliable that they survived The Great Fall and are still used today. A much larger network was once used by all of Zix, but most of the pieces to the system were salvaged during the nation?s reconstruction. Due to this and Karisia?s remote location behind the river very little contact is made between the capital and the nation?s other cities. In many ways Zix is a land of two peoples. Few citizens on the outskirts and the coast have any formal education, a stark contrast to the charmed life of a Karisian. While the people of the farms are fairly simple-minded, Karisians pride themselves on their intellect and devout faith. Despite this (or perhaps because off) this education, Karisians are extremely indecisive. Many are active members in multiple political parties and religions. They try extremely hard to be ?modern,? and will go to extreme lengths to do so. This open-mindedness is often a source of ridicule by surrounding nations. The archipelago to the north of Zix has long been a source of contention between Zix and its neighbor to the east. This is a direct result of Princess Dorlene?s aggressive use of The Zixish Royal Navy to create a hegemony in the region. Zix is currently using several of the small islands as military outposts, perhaps in preparation for a much larger assault on the main continent. The climate throughout the country is hot, dry and often highly unpredictable. Crop growth tends to fluctuate wildly from season to season, and most farmers barely produce enough to feed themselves and their families. Rainfall is more regular in the west, and many Karisians see this as a sign of approval from whichever deity they are worshipping that month. The Zixish people are starving both culturally and literally. Many feel a war is what would help to unite the nation and bring new prosperity to the land. -Shy[/size]

[b]The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty[/b] The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty is an annual Community Event created by Shy in 2005. At the start of each year fifty members, threads and things are selected as being ?nifty? by the community, thus creating a fun and nostalgic look back on the site?s past year. The Nifty Fifty was designed to be a more objective and inclusive version of the popular Otaku Awards. Covering a wide variety of topics, the Otaku Awards? winners were always the site?s most popular members and often OtakuBoards staff. This was because the Otaku Awards relied on member voting to decide the winners, which meant they were little more than a popularity contest. 2004?s Otaku Awards proved to be the most biased yet, and it was ultimately decided that they should be discontinued in favor of something new. For the Nifty Fifty members are allowed to nominate up to ten items. However, unlike the Otaku Awards the winners selected in the Nifty Fifty are not necessarily the fifty who have received the most nominations. At the start of the nominations process a diverse group of members, ?The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty Committee? are selected by the Event Master to compile a list of the fifty nominations they feel best represent the community. Each member of the committee comes up with an individual list, and from those the final list is compiled by the Event Master. Individual banners for each of the fifty winners were added to 2006?s awards, adding a new visual appeal to the event. These banners are created by volunteers from within the community, and have proven to be just as prized as the awards themselves. Unfortunately the creation of these banners take a great deal of time, and contributes to the nearly month-long gap between the end of nominations and the announcement of the winners. While the demand for voting-based awards come up from time to time, members have fully embraced the concept of the Otaku Awards. Each annual installment of the event is more popular than the last.
