1. I have no objections to KW remaining as our team leader. I'm very excited about our next challenge (whatever it is,) and look forward to seeing what we can come up with as a team. -Shy
2. I don't have any specific expectations for the future of the competition. I'm most looking forward to more challenges where the team works together (as opposed to just individual members, like the current one.) Beyond that, I would like to see the pacing of the game speed up, but I understand from personal experience how these things begin to taper off after a certain amount of time... And I expect to win, of course. -Shy
3.
rofl. Clearly I came off dumber than I intended. The last part is a joke. White is a nice guy, and is a nice guy regardless of mod or eventmaster, obviously. I certainly don't talk to members on here because of status =/ I don't just flock to someone because of their rank or how well known they are. I also like to think I'm not an idiot.[/FONT']
I didn't neccessarily target you in that statement, but I can see how you might see it that way. Accept my apologies if I offended you, but most of our 27,00 registered members are idiots. The good news it you aren't one of them. I think quite highly of White, and I feel that his 'popularity' here is completely justified. If I didn't think he was cool, I certainly wouldn't have selected him to be the new Event Master. If you were around during the days of the Picture Forum you would understand how a 'cute' picture can completely change one's social standings on these forums. If anything, I was referencing 'The Juuthena Effect' in my previous post. One year we had a member, Juuthena, who was voted 'Female Otaku of the Year' by a nearly 3-to1 margin. While she was far from a n00b, nearly all of her popularity could be attributed to the fact that she was an adorable asian girl on an anime-themed website. Thankfully OtaKuties avoids the problems that the Picture Forum presented by adding some substance to what is being posted. Before it was literally, "Hey you're hot, let's be friends!" Staff members are chosen for the quality of their posts and their contributions to the community, so it's only natural that newer members would flock towards them. But for every inactive staff member with a cult following, there are a dozen incredibly active regular members who hardly receive any attention at all. Dragon Warrior stands out as someone who has made several great contributions to the site without ever serving in a staff position. If more people made an attempt to contribute in such a way, certain areas of the board wouldn't feel so exclusive and we would all be much better off as a result. In creating Community Events like the Nifty Fifty, I always tried to turn the spotlight onto as many members as possible. Obviously OB has its' 'stars,' but showing a less-seasoned member some recognition is more meaningful in the long run. It sets a bad precedent to only let staff into your cool new RPG, for example, and subtle things like this that may turn away potential new members. -Shy
4.
White is a cute boy who is also Canadian. Not to mention he's a mod AND eventmaster. It's like being married to a real e-celebrity. 8D[/FONT']
I just felt I should quote this for emphasis. I don't have anything specific to say in response. As others have said, popularity on the intenet comes and goes rather quickly. There have been a dozen generations of 'Cool Kids' since I first joined, and I'm always baffled by how certain members develop the cult followings that they do. God bless 'em, but most members are idiots and will flock to anyone with a staff position or a 'cute' mySpace profile. Fortunately, members are also attracted by quality. The more intelligent posts you make on the boards, the more attention you're going to receive. Aaryanna_Mom is a good example of someone who didn't actively go looking for friends, but somehow became one of our most beloved members. And Nerdsy is the coolest kid on the block. Someone marry that guy already! -Shy
5. If you need any help with proofreading your posts, or strengthening your arguments let me know. I may not agree with the pro-life viewpoint, but I can see just as many flaws in the pro-choice one as well. Good luck. -Shy
6.
I love the nod of respect, but uh, what'd I do this year?
You may not remember it, but you created the banner for The Great OtakuBoards Scavenger Hunt. -Shy
7. I'm really going to miss having Kathy on our team, but welcome aboard Tiana! Allamorph and I are quite friendly, so I think between the three of us we can have a lot of fun here. Anyway, my problem with this first round of debates is that I'm Pro-Choice, so I don't know if I'm qualified to argue against abortion. If nobody else is able to do so, I'll step up to the plate, but I don't know if that's a very good idea. I would be more comfortable debating in a different topic. As always, it's our captain's call, so I'm willing to do whatever Tiana feels is neccessary. :whoops: -Shy
8. I think Sandy is going to make the volunteers switch side, or possibly form a new team altogether. I don't know anything you don't, good sir, it's just my speculation. If that's the case, which I think it is, it would be best if Allamorph or myself volunteered instead of Mom. If the volunteering member is removed, we'll be without our fearless leader! Anyway, it's just something to consider. If Allamorph won't have the time this week to be very active, then I'm willing to go in his place. I'll leave the final decision up to our captain, though. She hasn't failed us yet. -Shy
9. I quite like Team Argo. The prospect of switching teams doesn't appeal to me at all. -Shy

Yay, motherly insight." - Kei Lady Asphyxia "Because she's pretty, smart,
and gives great oral sex.
" - DeadSeraphim The Boss "I've been friends with Mike a good long time now, and looking back over the last twelve months I can definitely say he's been a great contributor to OtakuBoards as a whole, though more specifically his work in the Arena has been fantastic." - Gavin Aaryanna "Again another second time round vote, the same reasons still apply. It was sweet for a long time but there was something missing. Other consoles. "And thus Hardwired Online was born. Combining the idea of the WiFi friend codes thread along with 360 Gamer Tags and MMORPG listings. It now serves as a thread where you can fight, face, or fish with other OBers no matter what you play your games on." - White Opinionate Me This! "By interviewing members on a variety of subject matter, Mimmi created one of the most dynamic discussion threads in the boards history. It?s only fitting that it was placed in OB Anthology, where it would be safe from the wrath of our less literate members." - Shy As always, those members who continue to participate in Community Events rock. Whether it be Nifty Fifty, Labyrinth, or The Legionnaires, these are created with the goal of getting people interested and involved in OtakuBoards. If you have a great idea for a Community Event, let us know! Without your participation we can only go so far. Thank you once again to everyone who has helped me in creating and running Community Events over the years. My participation with this forum certainly won't end here, and neither should yours. 'Til then, -Shy

12. Hello again everyone! Although it may not seem like it, putting together this annual event is a huge undertaking! Thank you to members of the Nifty Fifty Committee for helping me put everything together (and who this year decided to remain anonymous, oh well.) This year's awards have been the most difficult to complete yet, as we had so many great members, threads and things to celebrate. The first 30 nominations are easy to decide, but after that it becomes incredibly difficult to figure out who should make the final cut. While not everyone may agree with this list, every attempt has been made to make it the most fair and complete we have put out so far. I would also like to make a point of thanking our artists, who went above and beyond the call of duty this year: Delta, Ezekiel, Eclipse, White, DeadSeraphim, and Redemption. Also special thanks to SunfallE, GTK, and Retribution, whose artistic contributions can also be seen here. So without further ado, enjoy... The OtakuBoards Graphic Worm "The fact that graphic artists from all walks of styles could come together and make a harmonious piece simply made it something to behold. There's something about working together with others and having that strange feeling in your gut of Is my piece going to work? that draws one to it. The OBGW was about blending pieces and styles, not standing out on your own, and to make something of unity that could be admired." - Katana Otakupedia "Because it was destined to happen. OB has brought anonymous people together and had them interact in such a plethora of intense and interesting ways over such a (comparatively) long period of time that it just might have one of the richest histories of any message board in history. It's only natural that all this lore should eventually be compiled in a Wikipedia-esque format." - John Doublehex "This guy can create the most detailed fictional worlds, like Argo Arx Arcanum, the academy of war and magic in Citius Altius Fortius and the fantasy realm of Areth in Summoners of the New Age, and I personally feel lucky to have been able to see them come to life in Adventure Square and OB Anthology. The amount of background information he comes up is overflowing, but very gratifying when you get to sink into those worlds." - Sandy Deadseraphim "The man's a comic genius, he alone accounts for nearly two thirds of my AIM quote away messages. When I'm down, he picks me up... and throws me down a flight of stairs. He turned me into the band Neil Perry, and then The Locust, and now apparently I'm a sexy RnB singer. I'm glad I have Alan around so I can be all these wonderful things." - RiflesAtReccess BKstyles "Because BK, with his constant planning for something new, his unblemished attitude, and funny disposition on and off the site, is a truly dedicated member of OtakuBoards. He always tries his best at whatever he posts and lets others know he's only there to help, even when the person he's helping doesn't want it. For these reasons mainly, he's truly Nifty on OB." - Tekkaman Papa Smurf "He's Papa Smurf, for cryin out loud! His reputation on the boards for debating the point he believes in until he's blue in the face (*laughs*) has always been a high point for me. He never tries to be offensive but he does get caught up in his subject of origon a lot, thus, causing his ability to chop anyone down until the person he was talking to is left feeling like their parents just went missing. I loved talking to Papa Smurf and though he is gone, he will never be forgotten; he will always be Nifty." - Tekkaman Allamorph "Since Allamorph has joined OB, it felt like everything clicked for me; I couldn't have imagined a better person to talk to. If it wasn't for Mafia, I don't think I ever would've talked to him but now that I have, I know that he fits right in with the rest of us here on Otaku. Allamorph, in short, is the most down-to-earth, simplistic-yet-ingenious, realistic person I've met since BKstyles and i've only known Allamorph since the event of Mafia." - Tekkaman Sara "Because the only reason I didn't nominate her before was that I know she's going to get in anyway (hell, she'd get in even if nobody nominated her. Sara's that good). But now that she's nominated me, it's good tact and even better ***-kissery to let my support be known officially. Sara's seriously one of the most remarkable people I know, period. And what's more, I'm pretty sure she gets that frequently. Many oldies (I'm starting to hate that word) have lots of admiration and respect coming to them, but in my eyes Sara's the only one who actually deserves the outright awe that many members bestow on them." - John The Complaint "It reminds me of that part in The Truman Show where someone accidentally opens a false wall allowing Truman to see a group of secretive people with mysterious doings. Except in this thread, the wall fell over because one of the people in the room was bumbling around scratching his ***, then when it was open everyone started yelling at him and everyone on the outside saw it and started laughing until the ones on the inside started throwing hissy fits at them and finally just took off their paper hats and disbanded their secret club. "So you can see the similarity there, I think." - John Draw My Character! "It?s Nifty because: The whole concept of the idea was cool. It drew a lot of artists, that normally wouldn?t post in the Art Studio, to show off their art to the community through a game kind of thing. The time limit kept the game rolling and it was no surprise that this thread would reach the amount of posts it has so far. Hereby I?d like to say that Sara did a very Nifty job by putting this very Nifty game on OtakuBoards." - Boo Ninjas or Pirates? "Go ahead and read through that thread. I dare you. It's filled with piles and piles of nonsense. However, it's probably the most fun I've had defending something ever. I wish dearly that Your Mother didn't ruin it for everyone because we weren't really doing anything wrong until he came along. However Pirates won in the end, anyway. I guess it doesn't help that the Ninja-Fanboys made it so easy." - White Citius Altius Fortius "Despite it being an elaboration on already existing concept, it brought a world of possibility within a widely common field of RPing that involved high school drama, action, and magic. To the members involved, it moved along quickly yet neatly as well. It captivated everyone's attention and we as the members took it to 140+ pages before it's abrupt death. Tis true it's death was as well due to it's popularity, but in either case it is noteworthy (or nifty) both because of it's success and failure. While it's second installment was not as succesful, it too drew largely. But it could not beat the original." - BKStyles Otaku Idol 2 "Never has so much drama been in one place on the Internet ever. She's very talented and comes across as a really nice person who's always willing to help out. She also given me links to a couple of sites with hot Bleach fanart, but I'm sure didn't need to know that. 13. I fixed some of the formatting/typos I had noticed in our entry and make some of the scene transitions less jarring. I also built up Mother a bit more, and her history with Diana. This was done to make everything feel more cohesive, I don't know how anyone else feels about it, though. My goal was not to change the overall tone tone, or entertainment value of our entry. I think the final product is pretty entertaining, so regardless of what happens I'm very proud of it. Allamorph and Kathy/Mom in particular, I cannot give enough thanks for all of the hard work and time he put into this. -Shy :whoops: Edit: It looks like we failed this round's challenge, but we put forth a good effort. I think we worked together pretty well on this one... although the story may have suffered as a result of us not finishing it until the last minute. Good work everyone, and just like last time, I hope there will be no hard feelings for whoever gets voted out.
14. Yeah, I can try and ty it together somehow, but I won't have a chance to do so until the morning. I apologize for not having more time this weekend. If nothing is up by the morning I will try my best to piece it together. Thank you again everyone for all of the hard work you have put into this challenge. -Shy
15. When you post the final story I can just edit your post to include the first background, or PM you with the information on how to post it yourself. Personally that one was my favorite as well, but I wanted to give us some options. I'm liking what I've seen so far. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. -Shy
16. I really like how the story is developing so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing where Kathy takes us next in the story. It will be interesting to see how all of the different portions tie in together, and I have no doubt that Allamorph is going to do an excellent job. Just remember that the genre we are working on is 'Fantastic Adventure,' so keep that the sole focus of our screenplay. Comedy and romance are great, but our assignment was to come up with the most exciting story we can. The more action the better! -Shy Edit: Also, please be sure to vote which post background you would like us to use (if any.) Nobody seems to have posted their thoughts yet... so um... please do that.
17. Here are a few post backgrounds we could use to enhance our screenplay's overall presentation. I also PM'd each of you a large scene I wrote, although the tone of my piece is a little different than Allamorph's. Hopefully we can combine the two and come up with something spectacular. Post Background LASEDDFOHFJHGFO IFHFH FJFJFHJH IWIRO KD IROEE Post Background LASEDDFOHFJHGFO IFHFH FJFJFHJH IWIRO KD IROEE Post Background LASEDDFOHFJHGFO IFHFH FJFJFHJH IWIRO KD IROEE Post Background LASEDDFOHFJHGFO IFHFH FJFJFHJH IWIRO KD IROEE
18. Adam, this site's founder, has recently suspended all anime news coverage on theOtaku.com (link.) In case you weren't aware, our parent site is in the midst of a full-fledged war with the Anime Film Foundation (AFF) which may eventually in legal actions. The entire situation is very complicated, and may only get worse as time progresses. If ever there were a time for this community to show it's support of Adam and theOtaku.com, now would be it. Anyway, that's not the whole point of this thread. This thread is to call into question why someone else hasn't started this thread already. myOtaku.com's community came to aid of Adam almost immediately. Meanwhile, I'm not sure anyone here but Panda or Kei were even aware of the situation. theOtaku.com and OtakuBoards have never been united in anything, at least not in recent memory. Over the years the two sites have drifted apart, and it has gotten to the point where this connection has little meaning anymore. Just as we are so oblivious to the day-to-day happenings at our parent site, if James hadn't put so much work into OB already, it's likely that theOtaku.com wouldn't have a message board at all. Where, if at all, does OB fit in under theOtaku's network of anime sites? Is calling the site 'OtakuBoards' simply a throwback to the early days, and what exactly does this disconnect mean for OB's somewhat-distant future? Post your thoughts and stuff. -Shy
19. Thread closed. We should have this up in about a week. Thanks everyone! -Shy
20.
Interesting how Sandy assigned each team a genre corresponding to their name. So, we, the Argonauts, have Fantastic Adventure[/COLOR']. I'll start thinking about it this evening. In the meantime, any rudimantary ideas for plot/characters/etc.?
Sandy said 'Fantastic Adventure,' so it's obvious we should do a short adventure story with a fantasy twist. The first thought that came into my mind was doing something along the lines of Jason and the Argonauts? I think it's important we hammer out the story quickly, so we can spend as much time as possible trying to polish and improve the work. In my experience, the best thing for us to do is hammer out the the major story points together. From there we can make an outline, adding more and more detail as we see fit. Next would be getting one of us to sit down and actually write it, so once we have a semi-finished product everyone can throw in their own corrections and opinions. All of us are creative wrtiers, so this is one challenge we shouldn't have a problem with. I have some experience (not a lot) with script format, so I can write out the final script. However, if someone else has more experience, or would like to give it a try, please do. I may not have time to give it my full attention with Nifty Fifty and other online projects looming on the horizon. Having said that, I'm very excited about this challenge and can't wait to see what we come up with. -Shy
21. Question: How many pages (roughly) is this supposed to be? -Shy
22.
None, I have a popcorn machine that uses hot air to pop it and I eat it completely plain. Makes a nice delicious snack since the few times I've tried it with stuff on it the overload of sugar, salt and other spices was a bit sickening.
I completely agree with you there, indifference. Plain popcorn out of a hot air popper is a thing of beauty. A little salt is okay, but anything more than that is disgusting. -Shy
23. Well, phooey! Great challenge, Sandy. -Shy
24. You did a fantastic job on this one, Kathy! You went above and beyond the call of duty as our team leader, and I can't thank you enough. I think this technically won the challenge, too. Sakura isn't a team leader, so there post shouldn't count. This means we'll get a new member for our team from the reserves... maybe we can get kalon back? And yes, I also found the 'race' aspect to this challenge a little unfair. If I wasn't such a night owl I only now would have seen this week's challenge, and by then it could be too late. -Shy
25. I'm looking through the back few pages now, and I've already found the first: Dragon Tournament on Page 95. Ezekiel, start looking on PAGE 93 and work backwards from there (I've already looked at the previous few before reading your message.) I'll take the first page through the 25th, I guess. Remember that this is a race, so we have to hurry! -Shy Edit: I did up to Page 26. Here is what I found. Ancient Battle on Page 9 Kill Game on Page 17
