[strike]Is this RPG going to be using some form of the chapter system for posting, or will it be free-for-all? On that note, since I'm playing as a supporting cast member I'd like to have some idea of how often I should post once this starts up. -Shy[/strike] Edit: Yes there are! Reading is fundamental!

I had to skip over a lot of tracks by The Magnetic Fields that kept repeating, for some reason my iTunes is in love with it. Character Name: Stanford Gaines Age: 34 Profession: B-Movie God Brief History and Description: Stanford is a tall and muscular individual whose natural charisma makes him the idol of women across the globe. Most recently he has gained noteriety playing Detective Bruce Carnage in the popular film series "The Carnage Mysteries." Corn-fed and raised in the great state of Kansas, Stanford Gaines was actually born with the name Damien Alexandrov, but changed it by request of his agent at the age of 22. It was at that age he left his middlingly successful acting career in the American Midwest to move to out Hollywood in search of fame and fortune. Although he often receives credit for the snappy dialogue and intricate storylines present in his films, most of those things are lost on him, who quit high school at the age of 16 to pursue a career in the performing arts. Just the same, he is first and foremost an actor, so accepting praise and feigning knowledge of any particular subject come naturally. With his movie-star good looks and penetrating blue eyes Stanford is often seen on the cover of various tabloids and women's magazines, where many speculate on his lovelife and notorious status as a bachelor. However, like many other Hollywood icons in his day, he could care less about the fairier gender. -Shy

I don't feel like a Games forum is a good idea because it's unlikely that their current popularity is anything more than a "fad." By that same token, we should create "Otaku Fiction" sub-forums, and bring back the sparring one. There's no reason these threads can't co-exist with normal discussion threads, or in The Arena where they used to be. In fact, Adventure Square used to be called "Games and Stories" because the threads within it were just that -- Games and Stories. If anything, there should be some discussion about figuring out where a permanent home for these kinds of threads should be (if one is even needed.) I personally feel like they should be examined on a case-by-case basis, as some games deserve to be in Anime Lounge, or Play It, etc. -Shy

My main hobby is probably the Internet, sadly, and my time/attention is split over several sites. More than anything I'm a lurker, since I can't seem to commit to writing much anymore. OB is obviously close to my heart, but most of my writing is done on Orange Lazarus these days. Beyond that, I'm an enormous comic book nerd and read pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I occasionally read "real" books, but it's almost always non-fiction of some kind. This is probably because of my interest in Journalism, although I wouldn't classify it as a hobby. I'm a huge fan of gambling, so I actively seek out card games and casinos now that I can gamble legally (Blackjack is a classic.) So, in other words, I'm boring. -Shy
I'm going to guess that #7 is PWNED...=/ Either that or Strongbadia.
Just to warn you, Marsh, you can't include two answers in your post. It looks like you are guessing PWNED, but I just want to make sure, because if you don't specify your guess won't count. Also, most of the people who have posted their guesses are very, very wrong. Keep trying! -Shy

Dear Sir or Madame, I cordially invite you and one guest to join me for an evening of dinner and cocktails on February 14, 1965. As is tradition, this event will be hosted at my family?s estate, only a short drive outside of the District of Columbia. My dinner parties are widely publicized throughout the New York tabloids, and many have found their fortunes turned after making a simple appearance in my home. Those who frequent my parties are kings, presidents, celebrities, and some of the world?s most brilliant minds? but for one reason in particular I?ve decided to invite you. Despite my apprehension for allowing so many newcomers to attend one of my parties, your services (and the services of many others) may be required. You see, I?ve heard many great stories about your skills, and it is my most sincere hope that you will be able to unravel the dangerous and complicated string of events leading up to my own murder. I suspect that this Valentine?s Day will be my last, and think you will be key to finding the culprit. Please R.S.V.P as soon as possible. An old woman with a target on her head has better things to do than wait for your reply. Sincerely yours, Alice Longfellow
Alice Longfellow, a wealthy socialite from Washington D.C., has personally invited you to attend her own murder. Food and drinks will be catered by Paris' Martine Waterford, and live music will be provided by Sara Franks and the Orleans 6. Please include the following in your reply. Character Name: Age: Profession: Brief History and Description: If your reply is deemed acceptable by Mrs. Longfellow, she would like you to bring another guest (player) of your choosing. That's right, choose a date. This guest may be someone who wasn't approved by Mrs. Longfellow, or another character entirely. What is important is that each character fills out a reply in this thread before they begin posting in the main thread. It is also important to note that posts in the actual thread will contain a word count limit of 650 (or fewer) words per post. Your first reply in the main thread, and all replies in this thread, need not follow that pattern. Be creative with your reply, and make use of this mystery's setting. Any questions about this adventure may be posted in this thread. All replies are due by August 15th. Don't be late. -Shy
Interesting note:[/B'] This post, excluding this note, is 685 words.
Your post is actually a lot smaller when you take out all of the times you quoted others, love. Anyway, if you had read my last post (it's the one you glossed over to respond to Gavin's points) you would see that I never intended to institute this as a rule, or even propose such a thing. I'm merely tossing an idea into the Underground, and seeing what the various reactions are. It would make for an interesting writing exercise, and force some of the more long-winded writers to do something short, coherent and to the point for once. To be honest, I would be just as interested in doing an entire RPG with 50 or 1,000 word posts being the requirement... I simply chose the 400-600 range because it seemed to be the average. This is all an attempt to keep up momentum with an RPG to prevent it from dying rather than artificially boosting the number of posts in order to declare it as being a success. -Shy Edit: Not including this note, or the quotation. 169 words.

Sara said a lot of what I was meant to, so I'll try not to retread over her thoughts. No, the word limit would not be some sort of rule set across the boards, but it is something that I may consider enforcing in future RPGs. Gavin and I have discussed the high amount of pressure people feel when posting in certain 'high profile' RPGs, and we feel this is partially to blame for long gaps in, and the eventual death of, said RPGs. I know that with a word limit I personally would feel less pressure to turn in a lengthy piece of literature with every post, and in turn I would be much more active as a result. That isn't to say the quality of my posts would neccessarily suffer, but the stress of posting something 'remarkable' has hurt me creatively at times. If anything, a word limit to encourage more regular, casual posts would help. The longest single post I have ever done for an RPG was about 3,000 words, and it took me nearly three weeks to complete. Other than the fact that I chose not to, there's no reason I couldn't have split it up into several smaller posts. An RPG should always be a work in progress, so maybe major plot twists and character developments should take place at a slower, more natural pace and over multiple posts. This gives other players a chance to contribute, piece by piece until the story itself is a real collaboration (rather than just a single player's vision.) It's often the case where a single writer dominates the story with a lengthy piece of writing, which pressures other writers into making every submission into a 10-page epic. I guess what I'm saying is that right now I'd rather be participating in a constantly active RPG with 100 small posts than one whose story stretches out over 10 infinitely long ones. This isn't to say smaller posts have any less quality than large ones. We all know that the writers are the ones who dictate the quality of an RPG, not a posting order or word count. -Shy
-
I think it will hurt it because sometimes the best posts are the smaller ones. Sometimes I just want to write a quick two minute scene, and I think that putting enough detail in that 2 minute scene to make it five minutes worth will eventually hurt it in the end.
No, I'm sorry if my post was confusing. I mean, putting a limit on how much the players can write in each post. The posts would generally be shorter, but there would be more of them. Also, this might challenge writers to fit as much content into their posts as they can, knowing that they aren't allowed to write more than 400 words (or whatever.) -Shy
-
I'm toying with an idea, and I needed some feedback... How do you feel about putting an upward limit on the size of RP posts, to encourage activity? What would this magic number be? Do you think it would help posting, or hurt creativity in the end? -Shy

Welcome to The Great OtakuBoards Scavenger Hunt! This is the first of several events to keep members entertained throughout the summer, and hopefully it will do just that. First and foremost this event is a scavenger hunt in every sense of the word. Each week I will post a new set of riddles/clues, and it is up to the members to figure out the answers to these riddles and post them in this thread. The goal here is to find certain members, threads, and things on OtakuBoards.com. Be sure to keep that 'Search' feature nearby, because nearly anything on the site can be the answer to a riddle, from fonts to smileys to banned members. Also, anyone can participate -- staff members, too! Although I may post as many as ten riddles each week, members are only allowed to provide the answers to one of them. By being the first member to post a correct answer to one of the riddles you will earn a single point on the scoreboard. At the end of the event, the member who receives the most points will win a special mystery prize. Remember that only the first correct answer counts, so if someone answers the riddle correctly before you do, you need to try and answer a different one before its too late. At the start of each week a new set of riddles will be posted, as will the answers to the previous week's riddles. When posting the answer to a riddle, please post the number of the riddle you are attempting to answer. Answers without a number will be ignored! Members won't know if their guess was correct or not until the end of the week!Week 1 #1
I am usually very round, sometimes I bounce around. All I need right now is a 300x100 banner (1 pixel border) that reads 'The Great OtakuBoards Scavenger Hunt.' I don't have anything specific in mind, in terms of colors of images or what. You have complete creative control over what you want to do, just keep in mind that this is going to be a fun summer-y event. Thanks for your help. I need this ASAP. -Shy

Warning: Sexually related Question. 17+ Only. Rating [M-S]
Shy replied to Dhampir's topic in General Discussion
And on that note I'm going to close this thread. I feel like the original question was answered in a satisfactory way, and everything else being discussed is pretty off-topic. Anyone who wants to start a hentai thread in the Anime Lounge can (I suppose,) but remember this forum has strict rules against pornography of all kinds, and linking to sites deemed inappropriate by members of our OtakuBoards staff. Topic closed. -Shy -
i agree with what others have said here, that this is quite possibly the worst thread to ever appear in this forum. Normally I would just delete this thread, and pretend it never happened, but I think it's a good time to set an example with you. When you act like a moron on our boards and blatantly disregard the rules you get banned, and guess what? You're getting banned. My apologies to the members who inhabit the Underground. I'll do my best to keep an eye on this place until the issues with staff placement can be resolved. -Shy

It's not so much a ladder when I'm on the top, and everyone else is below me. Ahem. People with similar interests tend to attract the company of one another. The anime nerds like to be with other anime nerds, as do the roleplayers, etc. There are obviously cliques on the forums, but I don't think of it as some sort of elitist, 'We're better than them,' thing. People claim the moderators are somehow divine and as a result there are certain members who worship the ground we walk on. It's not that I don't like being worshipped (quite the contrary!) but it's the individual members who place staff on such a high pedestal. As is often the case in real life, a social ladder only exists because people create them in their heads. The best way to make friends on this place is to be active and interesting. Having a title or being here for half a decade might seem cool, but some of the most boring people on this forum have been around for years. No matter what clique they belong to, some members are just lame. I'm looking at you, Shinmaru. -Shy
