Chapter Three: The Gardens
30

Rin and Len laughed mercilessly as they watched Charlotte struggled with the monster that they had summoned from within Charlotteâ??s psyche. Battered and defeated the young woman lay mercilessly at the bottom of the mansionâ??s rear staircase as she was being beaten within an inch of her life. â??Isnâ??t it lovely, Brother?â? Rin asked with a mischievous grin, â??To think we could have been doing this all along instead of wasting our time with these other boring ghostsâ?¦â? Charlotte cried for help as the beast slashed the poor girl across the face with her jagged fingernails. It was not that the creature had overpowered Charlotte, she was merely too frightened to fight back. â??Youâ??ve been a very naughty girl!â? Len shouted with delight, â??And as much as weâ??d like to see the other guests punish you, I donâ??t think any of those boring adults would--â? Suddenly and without warning Charlotteâ??s monstrous doppleganger dissipated into a harmless puff of smoke. As the vapor began to clear the Gravedigger appeared, standing between Charlotte and the Twins. â??Your champions have fallen, and I am here to collect our your end of the deal.â? â??Thatâ??s not fair! We only just got started.â? â??Yeah! Weâ??re having fun and weâ??re not going anywhere!â? The Gravedigger had grown tired of these children, and the way they were turning his game into something much lessâ?¦ civil. The beautiful Miss Hamilton was helpless against the power of these two spirits, and to him that seemed most unjust. As menacing as the Rosengard ghosts were, it seemed to the old man that these mortals should be much more worried about one another, where at least they stood a fighting chance. He raised his shovel slightly above his head and suddenly the two childrenâ??s eyes began to illuminate with a fiery glow. The Twins cried in agony as they collapsed to the blood-stained floor. â??Donâ??t waste my time, children. I have other matters to attend to.â? The room began to shake as he spoke. Charlotte attempted to wipe some of the blood from her face as she slowly rose to her feet. She braced herself against the stairs railing as she watched the three spirits converse, entirely unsure of what to make of the scene happening before her. â??....thank you, sir.... whoever you are, thank you....â? The Gravedigger turned his head towards Miss Hamilton. Even without the use of eyes, the specterâ??s gaunt face somehow managed to show total and utter contempt for Charlotte. A door suddenly opened, one that led out onto the mansionâ??s dark and labyrinthine gardens. He uttered a single word as he pointed his shovel towards the girl: â??Run.â?

Great post, Nathan! A perfect way for us to end our round. As it stands TWO players have had both of their characters eliminated and since they did not have a Life Card at their disposal they are removed from the game. So let's take a moment to thank both Inuyasha Fandom and Shy for their enthusiasm and participation... wait a second here.... Both of my 'dummy' characters were among those eliminated, and as such I am removing my own Power Card, the Poison Card, from play. Also: The Playtime Card and the Twins are out of the game as well, and I'd like to ask that IYF refrain from posting from now on, and that people no longer use the Twins in their posts. Don't worry, though. You'll all have an opportunity to give the Twins a proper send-off soon, I promise! Thanks to the unwise decision I made of having an energy drink I'm going to launch the next round right now with a post. IYF had one Power Card in their possession that never saw play, and I'm going to shuffle that back into the rotation for our remaining players. That will give us a total of TEN Power Cards in play this round, SIX of which will be Death Cards. Just like the previous round, this one ends when all of the Death Cards have been used. Two Bonus Cards were earned, One for Heaven's Cloud and one for Nathan. How did they earn it? Showing significant compassion or mercy between mortal characters in his post. There will be a new special criteria for earning a Bonus Card this round, and it may not be so pleasant.... - Shy NOTE: Some players have already received Non-Death cards. Unless my instructions state otherwise, all of those cards are used just like Death Cards and should be included in the body of your post. Each of these special cards are unique, though, so I would appreciate if you included the description of the card in your post as well.
Seems we're just left waiting on Anomaly and Nathan then, very curious to see who the last two deaths are going to be and what extra cards might come in to play afterwards. Josh, quick question, are we allowed have the spirits interact with one another ? For instance the Butler is going to be pretty peeved if the other ghosts start wrecking up the Manor.
Yup. That's perfectly fine. - Shy

Correct again! You can be as cruel as you want to our human guests as long as you don't kill them. So have at it! - Shy
so are all the death cards going to be played before the new cards are dealt?
Correct! The round ends once all of the Death Cards have been played. Other cards that may have been dealt out may be saved for later rounds. People have asked me this a couple of times already, but I thought I would repeat this for the group; You can use your ghost's individual Power Card as often as you'd like, but once you attach it to a specific character it remains in that character's posession until you (and only you) say otherwise. So, for example, Diana Ross is going to be subject to the Gloom card until Heaven's Cloud says otherwise. - Shy

Six down, and at least three Death Cards to go. Who will survive? -Shy
Well, I hope I got that right. If there's anything that needs changing Josh please let me know.
You did great. I just want to remind everyone that your ghost's specific card is independent of Death Cards. Consider your ghost powers to be status ailments which can be used as often as you'd like. Characters can only be killed with Death Cards or some other similar card. It would appear we already have the first death. Let the games begin! - Shy
-
Okay, round 2 is started and each of the players have been assigned their cards. I can tell you that 12 cards have been dealt out, and 9 of those are Death Cards. Everyone has at least 1 card, and the other 3 cards have been assigned randomly. There is at least 1 bonus card that can be earned by completing a certain objective: What that is I cannot tell you, but I'll let you know at the end of the round. The round ends once all of the Death Cards have been used. Other special cards such as Shield Cards or Life Cards may be saved for later rounds or used now. Let me know if there are any questions. - Shy
Chapter Two: The Game Begins
30
All of the guests had huddled together in the cavernous dining room and began introducing themselves to one another. Their conversations were brief and pleasant, but few were willing to go into more detail than a simple greeting. Elyssa folded her arms, a bit of rainwater still dripping from her long gown. â??Does anyone know what we are waiting for? When is this supposed â??contestâ?? going to begin?â? â??You musnâ??t worry â??bout that, dearie,â? Madea said drly, sitting from a chair at the end of the large dining room table, â??Our host has been watching us the entire time.â? As if waiting for an introduction The Gravedigger appeared in a cloud of smoke from behind the old woman. Several of the guests jumped back, startled by the suddenness of his arrival. he wore a long trenchcoat and aged black boots covered in dirt. In one hand was a rusted shovel covered with several indentations, while in the other hand was raised towards the roomâ??s enormous chandelier. â??Good evening,â? the dark figure said. Suddenly the large glass ornament above them lit up, revealing The Gravediggerâ??s face. It was tired and ragged, even moreso than the leather on his boots, and there were too deep sockets in place of his eyes, â??Welcome to the game of souls.â? â??Who are you?â? Umbert asked as he rose to his feet, â??Are you the caretaker of this estate?â? â??In a sense, yes, but that is not of concern to you. I am here merely to act as overseer of this competition.â? â??And that contest is...?â? Evelynn asked impatiently. â??Survival. None of you are saints, each of you know this in your hearts to be true. Whether it be the result of your fellow man, the traps that have been laid in the mansion, or the vengeful spirits participating in this game, only one will survive the evening.â? The crowd suddenly burst into panic as several of the players fled the room immediately. Kevin immediately charged The Gravedigger, placing his hand on the manâ??s shoulder as he attempted to tackle him to the ground. POISON: The character wielding this card will slowly become poisoned over time. Upon touching The Gravedigger Kevin found himself overcome with an intense nausea and immediately collapsed to the ground. â??Kevin!â? Sara cried, rushing to his aid, â??Are you alright?â? â??He made the mistake of trying to harm me... let that be a warning to each of you. The others will find that the gates have been sealed, and there is no escaping from this place. Treat your fellow players with mercy when you take their lives, as you can only hope for the same for yourself when your time comes. Good luck.â? With that the chandelier went dark once again, and The Gravedigger was gone.

I hate to sound like a nay-sayer so early into the game but are we sure we want to use terms like "coloured folk" and "white folk" in this ? Granted the setting is akin to the 1920s or 1930s but I have to say I'm not terribly comfortable with that kind of terminology.
I respect how you feel Gavin, but at the same time I feel like that language can help establish a character's personality. We have four black characters in the story (which is awesome) and if we're going to address the race issue I'd like to see the full spectrum of viewpoints represented through those characters. The good thing about this story is that if some of the characters get out of hand you have the power to kill them, or, as HC said, rewrite them in a manner which better suites you. -Shy

It would appear that all of our characters have entered the game, even though White and Nathan have yet to post at all. I don't think anyone intends to keep the game from moving forward, so here's what I'll do: White and Nathan have roughly 36 hours to make a post. From my watch that means they have until 8/11 to post, but obviously Nathan and White have their own time zones. if either or both of them fail to do so we'll move forward and I'll start handing out the various Death/Life/etc. cards. Until then everyone should feel free to post in the RPG, and are more than welcome to make use of their ghostly Power Cards. Have the characters explore the mansion, make a few enemies, and explore their backstories a bit more. Have fun! - Shy
People, if you don't start posting soon, I swear I'll introduce all the characters myself. ;P Just kidding, I just want to encourage everybody to post something. I don't think Shy is looking for Almagest-quality posts for this game, so I believe even something simple and short will suffice, if your time is constrained. ;D
We've gotten most of the characters introduced in little over 24 hours, so I'm really pleased with the response time so far. Some of these characters are already fascinating; I hope my favorites survive into the later rounds so we have a chance to flesh them out a bit. - Shy

Okay, we're up! In this chapter every single character must be introduced within the story before the first cards are dealt out. In my post the two characters I wrote about shared a connection, but the characters you write about can be strangers or whatever. Feel free to include as many or as few characters as you would like: the sooner everyone has posted the sooner the fun begins. In this round the spirits will NOT directly interact with the mortals but you can use your Power Cards now if you want. When you attach any card to a character do it like this within your post: Your spirits are welcome to interact with one another, or you can write about your ghost's history in a flashback. Really, the amount of involvement you want your spirit to have in the story is up to you. Primarily this game is about the mortals, but I'd love to delve into the mystery of the Rosengard murders as well. -Shy

outside the Rosengard Estate, his spectral form concealed beneath the heavy rainfall that surrounded the countryside that night. This evening had been in the making for years, and now the pieces were finally in place for the game of souls to begin. He knew there was little to fear from the spirits he had chosen to take part, they were too consumed by fear and greed to see his true intentions. He stared up at the Moon, concealed behind the thick clouds, and grinned. He could hear the mortals arriving now, and it would not be long before first blood was spilled. A raging storm assaulted the Rosengard Estate as Miss Charlotte Hamilton pulled up to its wrought-iron gates in her horse-drawn carriage. She had traveled a great distance to come to the famed Rosengard Estate, but was shocked to see the sight before her. What was once the pinnacle of luxury was now a dilapidated, and by her view, dangerous looking hellhole. Every single window was broken, and it appeared that large portions of the roof were missing as well. She reached into her purse and checked the mysterious letter that had been delivered to her: [blockquote]Miss Charlotte Hamilton, You are cordially invited to take part in an unusual competition to determine the future fate of Rosengard. Be warned: This is not a game for the weak of spirit. Your skill, strength and integrity will be tested at every turn, but he who succeeds will inherit both the massive estate and the family fortune that comes with it. I wholly encourage your participation, and look forward to meeting you in exactly three weeks time. - G PS: Enclosed is a trinket expressing my sincerity in this matter.[/blockquote] It had to be more than a joke, she thought as she clutched onto an ornate, jeweled necklace she had been given, Why else would they give her such a remarkable piece of jewelry? It was the most beautiful and expensive thing the simple woman owned, and worth more than she could hope to earn in several years of her modest nurses salary. How could she turn down the opportunity for more? After all, it was only a game. She reached the enormous front door of the mansion, her clothes soaking wet, when suddenly the dark building began to glow with the faint glimmer of candlelight. Charlotte knocked on the door, calling out for anyone else who might be within earshot. "Hello? Is anyone here?" Silence. "Is there someone around? Anyone?!" "I'm here," a deep, male voice replied from behind her. Charlotte turned around, startled, to discover a dark-skinned, middle-aged man standing before her. He wore a fine suit and held an umbrella in one hand, and a familiar looking letter in the other, "You're drenched my dear. Please, share my umbrella with me." "Thank you kindly sir. Are you... are you the one who invited me here?" "No, I was invited here as well. I've been surveying the outside of the building, hoping to see any signs of life inside. It looks completely abandoned." "That's not possible. Someone has to be lighting the candles inside." "Then I suggest we enter together. I checked the door earlier; it's not locked. At the very least it will give you a chance to dry off." "Yes, of course," Charlotte said, extending her hand to the stranger, "My name is Charlotte Hamilton. It's a pleasure to meet you." "I know who you are, Miss Hamilton," the man replied sternly, "My name is Daniel Mathis." "You know me, Mr. Mathis? How is that possible?" "How can you not remember?!" Daniel paused for a moment, collecting himself before he spoke again, "...My wife, Elaine Mathis, and was one of your patients. In fact, it was exactly one year ago tonight that you killed her."
Sign-ups are closed, and I just started the Backstage thread. I expect the RPG to launch within the next day or so. Thank you again to everyone for your interest so far! - Shy Edit: We're up!

Expect the RPG to launch sometime before the weekend is over, and then each character will need to be introduced into the story before the first cards are handed out. Please read the Power Cards carefully: I made tweaks to some of them from the sign-ups. In Gavin's case I renamed his card: I didn't do this intentionally, I just made the card with the wrong name in mind and am too lazy to make a new one. Sorry, bro. - Shy

I'd like to express an interest in this. However I don't have time before work to finish preparing a sign up. I will be able to do that via editing this post tomorrow evening. Provided you are still accepting applicants at that time.
For you, anything! That goes double for anyone else who might be interested: I probably won't be able to get the first post up until the weekend, so by all means sign-up. Some of the players who signed-up for the RPG haven't sent me their characters. I don't have a set number of players in mind, but once I have a sufficient group I'm launching things. It's better to get things sent to me sooner rather than later. - Shy

This is great news. I'm gonna get married so hard tonight. Maybe twice. It's my right! -Shy

No joke, I am terribly excited about this movie. I grew up on cheesy action movies and this looks like it's going to be a wonderful night at the movies. I thought the recent Rambo movie was pretty good, too, so this gives me a lot of hope. I'm also really looking forward to 'Machete,' which looks like it's going to be even campier than The Expendables, if such a thing is possible. - Shy

Great sign-ups everyone! I'm really pleased with what has been posted so far, but of course there is room for more if someone else if more people are interested in participating. I'll leave sign-ups open for another few days, and hopefully launch the RPG sometime on August 5th. A minor note about sign-ups: I'm pushing for a more timeless and fantastical feel to this story, so please try to keep any specific references to real cities or historical events out of your posts. Heaven's Cloud using the stock market is perfectly fine, though. Many countries have a stock market, so it's not a big deal. Let me know if there are any questions. Edit: I figure I might as well include the information about what to send me in regards to your secret characters. I may ask some players to alter their Power Cards, but everyone so far will be accepted. PM me the following information about the TWO characters that will be your champions within the game. Remember that from the following details these characters are blank slates; their personalities and backstories will be created by all of the players over the course of the story.
Picture: Include a PHOTOGRAPH of your character. I will modify this image to create a posting avatar. Name: first name and family name Gender: male or female Age: Occupation: if the character is still a child or has retired from some job, mention that as well
-Shy

Welcome back, Nathan! I was intending on the next post dealing with Belmonda and the gang to be their last for this particular story. If you'd like you can take the reigns!
Basically Natalia/The Ship are going to transport everyone else off-board, back in Anova, and disappear. Where the ship goes, and Jack's obsession with capturing it will be touched on in the next RPG.
Beyond that you have complete freedom to do what you want with it, and give your character a touch of closure for this particular chapter in the story. -Shy

The stately Rosengard Manor sits abandoned on this cold winter night. The looming iron gates and lavish exterior are slowly fading away into oblivion, a reminder of lost providence from so long ago. Once home to the most powerful family in the land, Rosengardâ??s fate changed forever with a mysterious killing spree that took place within its walls one terrible evening. Some say the familyâ??s matriarch went mad, others say the Rosengard family fell victim to a curse, the result of their own careless greed. Stories tell that the spirits of those killed remain to haunt the estate until their murder is solved. Those stories are true. The game of souls is about to begin: One spirit will be freed from their eternal prison and allowed to pass on into the next life, but it wonâ??t be easy.
Life and Death
Welcome to The Mansion. You will be playing as the spirits of those murdered so long ago, as well as the mortals who have been unknowingly summoned to the estate for a game of survival. Each spirit will secretly choose two mortals to enter the mansion as their champions. Throughout the game traps, magic and deceit will push each of the champions to their limits, until only one remains. That champion and their accompanying spirit win the game. I, The Gravedigger, serve as steward to this mansion and referee for the game:

Each player will create several characters who are controlled by everyone participating in the game.
Only the player and the gamemaster know which characters belong to him or her, and itâ??s essential that the secret is kept for as long as possible.
The players try to kill off each otherâ??s characters with Death Cards, and revive their own dead characters with Life Cards. Additionally, there will be many other cards that affect the flow of the game. They include (but are not limited to) Creation Cards where a player can add a new character to his or her roster, and Shield Cards, which protect a specific character from Death Cards for one round. Cards handed out by the gamemaster at the beginning of the round must be used by the end of the round.
Cards are dealt by the gamemaster at random and in secrecy at the beginning of each â??Round.â?? A round lasts for as long as it takes for each player to use all of their cards. At the end of a round posting ends until the gamemaster deals out cards again.
Bonus Cards (Fate Cards, Poison Cards, etc.) will be awarded to players after they complete certain actions using any character within the story. For example: A character who drinks alcohol within the story might award their player a Poison Card to use. All Bonus Cards are unique and can only be earned/used once. Bonus Cards can be used immediately or saved for later rounds.
Players are eliminated at the end of the round if they have no remaining characters.
The winner is the player whose character (or several characters) is the last one alive.

Power Cards
As mentioned earlier, the players will play both as ghosts and as the mortals chosen to represent them. While the mortals can be controlled by any player, the ghosts are player-specific, and will not be affected by any cards: They act merely as your avatars in this game. Each ghost will also have one unique Power Card that they can use on the mortals to give them special powers. Hereâ??s the rules specific to this card:

The power can help the soul to survive, or send it to an early grave. For example, the power of flying can be used to allow the soul to escape a dire situation, or to make it suddenly plummet to itâ??s death (by using a Death Card on the character).
When the mortal with the Power Card â??equippedâ? is killed, the card will be returned to the ghost to be used on a different character. The ghost may also opt to suddenly remove the Power Card from the soul and give it to someone else.
One character may have several Power Cards invested to it, but there is only one Power Card per ghost, so one power cannot be shared.

Sign-Ups
Now, hereâ??s the sign-up sheet for your ghosts:
Ghostâ??s Name: It can be a proper name (Buddy) or a nickname (The Gravedigger) Manifestations: What your ghost looks like. No pictures necessary. Personal Description: Brief history of your character. Why they were in the mansion when the killings took place, or at least their alibi. Power Card: Describe the unique power that the ghost possesses (see the rules on Power Cards above.)
To give you an idea on what Iâ??m looking for, here is my ghost, the judge of the game:
Ghost Name: The Gravedigger Manifestations: He is an older man whose dress and demeanor are straight out of the Wild West. He wears a solid black coat and pants, but has no eyes. He carries a shovel with him at all times. Personal Description: After decades of restlessness Gravedigger appeared before the spirits of Rosengard to make a bargain: They would participate in what he refers to as the 'Game of Souls,' and in exchange one of their spirits would be allowed to break their curse and pass into the ether. The remaining souls, both of those losing the game and of the newly-murdered victims, would become his property for all time. He is a grim presence, but a fair one. He will ensure that his game is run fairly, no matter what the cost. Power Card: CURSE: This character loses the power of sight and is rendered blind.
You can post these in this thread, and once chosen I will require that each player create two characters to represent them within the game. Those characters will be sent to me via PM. Any questions, comments or concerns you have can be posted here. Also: Special thanks to Sandy, and everyone who has helped to develop the concept of Death Card RPGs on this site! - Shy
