2.
Originally posted by Mitch Overall, this is good. But really, I am kind of left wondering what meningitis is. You need to get some facts in there. Also, you didn't explain too well what exactly happened. I know that a student caught it and so on. But I want the details. This then leads me to wonder why you didn't get an interview with the student. It would've made it entirely better. Because with a person you can tell a story. With a person you actually get more. I suppose you're tight for time or you couldn't get the student for an interview. But as my Journalism teaches says--you have to be a marine when you're a journalist. You have to find a way. Such as you could've interviewed the principal and so on. Or maybe I am utterly mistaken and this is just an editorial, opinion article. I'm sure that's the case. It is good, but I can see a lot of work that can be done to it. Mainly more details. It's so vague. But good job.
This is an editorial Mitch. I chose to leave a lot of details out because we have a front page news story about Meningitis, my editorial is in response to that. It is kind of unfiar to not let you read the article, but I don't have a copy.. and it's really, really long. Generally opinions articles should not have quotes. I write an editorial to state my opinion, not someone else's. If this were a new story it would be a really poor one, news articles should be written objectively. I'll try to search for a copy of the article for you.... -Shy
3. My main concern is that the Beast fought Cordy when he originally emerged from the ground. I do not remember how injured she was, but Conner was completely devastated in the fight. If Cordelius (My name for evil Cordy) was responsible for the beast?s appearance, then why did she try to fight it? My guess is that Cordy has been evil since she first returned to Earth this year. But why was she returned to Earth in the first place? Is evil Cordy really Cordy, or some sort of doppelganger? *falls over* Ow. Also, we need to remember that Conner was born in the exact same spot that the Beast emerged from. If there was some sort of connection between Conner and the Beast, we probably would have heard it by now. It might have been a coincidence, or it might be part of Cordelius? plan to make Conner turn evil. In the last episode we saw that he is unable to attack when within the range of the Sanctuary spell, this means he is a demon. And now Cordelius is having Conner?s demon lovechild, so he might as well go all the way and start acting more demonic. -Shy
4. This Upcoming Issue, March 2003 The conclusion needs work, that is why I am working on it now.. Neck pains, high fevers, headaches, seizures and vomiting: the effects of contracting meningitis are extremely dangerous, but there are some lesser-known symptoms that can be just as damaging. Not too long ago a student here contracted a severe case of bacterial meningitis, causing an epidemic of suspicion and fear. Rumors started to spread throughout campus. People who had come in contact with the infected student, began to worry that they were susceptible to the disease. Many students spent their lunch period talking to others about the ?plague?. The average ALHS student cannot even pronounce ?bacterial meningitis? let alone know its symptoms and causes, and soon everyone began to fear that they were at risk. Suddenly people became afraid of something that they knew absolutely nothing about. But this seems to be common today; we live in a society where the media enforces new brands of paranoia every day. Something completely new and even more terrifying than the day before is always there to make Americans worry during the nightly news. One day killer sharks are attacking innocent swimmers, the next day Michael Jackson is endangering the lives of his children, the day after that Michael Jackson hires Voodoo priests to make killer sharks attack innocent swimmers. Because of this sensationalistic news, people become paranoid, and duct tape sales go up. There is too much important information out there to fit into a thirty-minute nightly newscast; important issues and politics cannot be simply explained in little sound bytes. That is why most people have absolutely no idea what is going on in the world around them. Students began to think that they had contracted meningitis, even though they did not know any of the real symptoms. A simple cough or sneeze was enough to make people feel uneasy, so it was unbelievably important that the school inform people of the facts of the disease and the case at school. Days passed before any real action was taken by administration, and during this time a large number of people ended up thinking that they actually had the virus. Misinformation is how rumors and gossip get started in the first place. If the school had made a formal announcement about meningitis as soon as it had started there would have been no need to send out individual letters to every parent. Fortunately no other cases of bacterial meningitis have been reported; but so much had time had passed before the letter was sent that a genuine outbreak could have occurred on campus without parents? knowledge. The school attempted to protect the privacy of the initial student involved, which is the main reason that action was not taken sooner; but keeping information like this from the student body endangered the health of others. I don?t expect the school to tell me when the person who sits next to me in English catches a cold, but would they smile politely and pretend that nothing had happened if I contracted the ebola? The only way I learned about the Meningitis scare in the first place was from another student. Their information was not 100% accurate, which only made me more nervous. The disease itself was not the biggest issue, everyone?s complete ignorance and how they reacted was. By now most have already forgotten about what was so critical and life-threatening just two weeks ago. But I'm sure that the next person to fall asleep during PE will end up being diagnosed with the bubonic plague. -Shy

willard

My review for the school paper... Willard is the heartfelt story of a lonely man who befriends a large group of cute, four legged creatures, and through the power of friendship they overcome their problems. Ok, so the cute, four legged creatures are really rats, the lonely man is psychopathic, and they overcome their problems by killing people... but is this movie really that different than ?Air Bud? or ?M.V.P.: Most Valuable Primate?? No. All of these movies have bizarre premises featuring animals, and all of them are predictable. The only thing that sets ?Willard? apart from the rest of the pack is its dark humor and disturbing visuals. As I mentioned earlier, ?Willard? is about a lonely man, Willard Stiles (Crispin Glover), who is in his 30?s and lives with his ailing mother. Willard lives a very sad life. He is so busy taking care of his mother that he often ends up arriving late for work. As a result, his boss, Mr. Martin (R. Lee Emery) ridicules Willard on a daily basis, making his life a living hell. One day Willard finds that there are rats in his basement, but after trying unsuccessfully to kill them, he tries to become their friend instead. Willard develops a close friendship with one albino rat, Socrates, and through Socrates Willard discovers that the rats will follow his commands. The entire premise of this movie is pretty weird. It is actually a remake of an older 1971 horror film, but this version tries to pretend that it a psychological thriller. This does not work very well though, and I do not think that there was a single point throughout the movie that I was ?thrilled?. This movie would probably not scare anyone, unless they had a severe fear of rats. Willard?s few rodent friends multiply into hundreds by the end of the movie; but I highly doubt that anyone who afraid of rats would see this movie, so I am not entirely sure who the audience for this film is. The acting was a little overdone, especially by Mr. Martin and Willard?s mother. They are a sharp contrast to how composed and monotone Willard is. The only ?normal? person in the movie is Willard?s love interest Cathryn (Lauren Elena Harring), but it seems like her friendship with Willard is out of pity more than anything else. Willard has no idea how to act in front of people, as he only feels comfortable when he is with his rat friends. In fact, Willard is so socially inadequate that he is boring to watch. He hardly ever says anything, and when he does he often repeats it several times for dramatic effect. The best acting in this movie was done by the rats, but I can?t be sure if most of them were real rats, or just computer generated rodents. In the 1970?s when special effects were limited, seeing rats attack a person might be more frightening because the audience could easily tell whether it was real or not. We live in a world of dancing hamsters and rapping kangaroos, so the ?wow? factor of seeing the rats do certain things is diminished. So, the only thing that would have been able to keep my interest was the story, but that also failed miserably. When Willard uses his army of rats to seek revenge on his enemies, the conclusion of the movie is obvious. There are very few good qualities to this movie, and I would not recommend it to anyone unless they were a fan of extremely bizarre and films. By the time the movie was over I felt like I had fallen victim to an eight dollar mouse trap. -Shy
7. I can't imagine how Wood's mother survived the pregnancy. I'm guessing that she did not fight vampires and demons during this time, but her responsibility as a Slayer is more important than her desire to have children.. isn't it? Someone on a BtVS forum that I visit suggested that Wood's mother was impregnanted by her watcher. It would explain why Robin got Watcher's training. Also, I think the name 'Wood" is more of a pun than an homage to Robin Hood. What do you stake a vampire with? Wood. Unless they are the Turok-Han, of course. Even though the character development has been light this season, they have still added a large amount of regulars to the cast. The current Scooby gang is: Buffy, Xander, Willow, Anya, Dawn, Giles, Kennedy, Andrew, Principal Wood and Spike. Plus about 25 Potential Slayers. This is compared to the very beginning of the season when it was just Buffy, Dawn and Xander. Taking care of the vampires during the last summer must have been a pain while Willow was away at Hogwarts, Spike was nuts, and Anya was evil. 'Angel' eclipses Buffy in terms of overall quality this season. What the heck do you think is going on with Cordy? -Shy
8. Even though Joey does not have the best deck, I have been waiting for the release of this for a while. There are a few key cards missing (Time Wizard, first and foremost) but overall it seems like a good purchase for Joey fans like me. How much did it cost? -Shy
9. We generally do not allow favorites topics on the boards because they lead to short and pointless posts. AnimeGurl, please put more thought into your threads before posting them. Topic closed. -Shy
10. I agree that someone should be telling Buffy to shut-up, but it should be someone that Buffy will actually listen to, like Willow or Xander. Or maybe even Dawn, I'm beginning to think that she would be a very capable leader of the Scoobies. Even if Kennedy is just a "average temporary girlfriend", her and Willow have no chemistry together. Heaving said that, if Kennedy was given more time to develop I think I would like her more. Tara never bothered me because of how passive and quiet she was, for the past few episodes I have been saying "Shut up Kennedy" every time she opens her mouth. Kennedy is not the only Potential Slayer, there are about 25 other girls in that house who deserve more attention.. including Dawn. Dawn has come such a long way since S5, seeing her vanquish that demon (or was it?) in "Conversations With Dead People" was great. The year she has been much more useful. With her abilities in swordsmanship and magic Dawn might end up being useful in the end. Dawn has never been given a full chance to develop either, hopefully Dawn will show up in a spin-off. I would love to see her join the cast of 'Angel' *is in fanfic mode now* Honestly, I didn't realize that the First was from "Amends" until I watched the episode again in reruns. But something big will, I'm not even sure if the FE will be behind it though. Right now it seems like anyone could turn to the dark side... What do you think of Andrew and Principal Wood? I think that both of them are great characters, especially Principal Wood. His conflict with Spike is great, it is the best plotline this season, in my opinion. It will be great to see how that battle turns out. -Shy
11.
Originally posted by Endymion It's been a good while since the last "Buffy" topic and I really want someone to talk about the current season to. So who here likes watching "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer"? Anyone watching the current season? What do you think of Kennedy? The main villain this season? The fact that this is the last season (7)?
There is another fan of Buffy on OB? Yay! *has been dying to talk about this season* Let me start from the top. Kennedy: Nearly every "die hard" fan of BtVS seems to hate Kennedy, but I don't. My only complaint is with how stupid the character is. Even though she is a Slayer In Training, she is not the Slayer, at least not yet. Kennedy is extremely brash, moreso than even Dawn was in her first year. She *supposedly* has more training than any other potential Slayer, so she should at least have some knowledge of the Hellmouth around her. It seems like Kennedy knows absolutely nothing about everything, so she constantly relies on her slightly superior fighting ability. If she continues trying to solve every problem with her fists (or her lips) she is going to get killed. On the positive side, I think the entire Potential Slayer's plotline has created some very interesting characters (I like Amanda) and things should pay off by the season finale. Also, I hate Willow+Kennedy. It seems like the writers just wanted to give Willow another girl to make out with, rather than bother to create a new and interesting character. Oz was a brilliant and thoughtful human being, Tara was passionate and loving, Kennedy is boring. She reminds me too much of the people I go to high school with. The Willow+Kennedy relationship seems rush, but so does everything else this season. The Big Bad: The First Evil is boring me right now. The main problem with FE is that it is not really a character, it just seems like a worn-out gimmick. Me, like everyone else was cheering "This is going to be the greatest season ever!!" when all of the big villains returned in "Lessons". Sadly, it has gone downhill from there. As soon as everyone figured out that the First Evil was taking the form of dead people, FE lost it's ability to manipulate the group. It has been threatening that something bad is going to happen for months now. They should not have started building up to an apocalypse in September, if the vent was not going to happen until June. I still have no idea what is going to happen in the next few episodes, so that is kind of exciting. There a few character who I would like to see FE take the form of: Tara, Jenny Calendar, Glory, Ben and the Mayor. I also wonder why FE hasn't taken the form of the First Slayer, wouldn't it drive Buffy nuts if the FE/First Slayer started giving her fake prophecies? S7 As A Whole: S7 is much different than any other season of Buffy, but there have been some good moments so far. "Selfless", "Storyteller", and "Him" easily earn a place on my list of favorite episodes. It seems that every episode has at least had one memorable moment. In "Same Time, Same Place" it was the posable Dawn, In "Lessons" it was all of the Big Bads returning, and in "Potential" it was Xander's great speech. But it seems like every great moment is countered by something so terrible that it makes me cringe just to think about it. Like Andrew has pointed out in "Storyteller" Buffy has given way too many motivational speeches to the group, but she hardly takes action. What happened to Buffy's original "If they want an apocalypse, we'll give them one" speech earlier this season? Buffy seems worn out from taking care of the Potential Slayers all year, so it is no surprise that the gorup hasn't tried harder to take out the First Evil. We are nearing the end of the season and we still no asolutely nothing about it, or it's weaknesses. I want to see the group finally get some information about the First Evil that they can use. Perhaps Willow can put it into a corporeal form using magic.. but that's ridiculous because Ms. Rosenberg is still scared of her own power. Willow has been using her powers really lightly this year, probably because the only thing that she has done so far is locate demons and put up magical barriers. Arguably, Willow is the most powerful person in the group. If anyone has a chance of learning more about the FE, it is her. At least she is going to be on 'Angel' next week. Maybe she can finally show off some of her mojo over there, LA needs all of the help it can get. Is Xander even on the show anymore? I vaguely remember someone fixing windows this season, that's about it... Edit 2: Not done yet, I'll post more again later... -Shy
12. [glib]My vote goes to Mitch.[/glib] The RPW is not dead. This round was less active than the previous ones, it is not a big deal. My schedule has been busy lately, so I was unable to turn in a submission. Next round I will put much more effort into my post. It is intimidating turning in a lazy post in a group full of such strong writers, so some people would prefer to have write nothing at all. This is your decision, but it would be sad if you gave up on the RPW already. Your next project might be interesting, depending on what it actually is. You tend to keep things very vague Mnemolth. -Shy

16. I read a lot of magazines, here are some of my favorites... Electronic Gaming Monthly: I have been subscribing to this for three years, and I keep every issue (They are all stashed under my drawer, heh). In my opinion they are the best gaming magazine out there; their news is almost always %100 accurate, and they are unibiased when they review games. Ever since Hsu became Editor-In-Chief the quality seems like it has been going downhill though. My only complaint is that they have way too many ads. Animerica: I do not subscribe to this, but I buy it almost every month. It is the only anime maagzine available in my area, so I do not have very much to compare it to. I like their reviews system, and their monthly columns. But I wish that they would devote more space to anime reviews, and less space to gaming and model building. Disney Magazine: What? I am a huge fan of animation, especially Disney, so it is no surprise that I subscribe to this maagzine. Most of the magazine is a gigantic advertisement for Disney's latest projects, but every so often they write something about Disney history. -Shy

I'm not looking for a supermodel, but I need there to be a mutual attraction between us. [*]Probably someone tall and thin, with dark hair like mine. Spiked hair is my favorite, but it doesn't make a huge difference as long as they take care of it. (Like others have mentioned, bad grooming is a complete turn-off.) [*]Light skin would also be good, they do not have to be completely tan or anything like that (because way too many people in Cali are). [*]They do not need to be athletic, but it would be nice. I am not very athletic, but I am trying to go to the gym and stuff. Going to the gym could be something that we could do together. [*]I would not date anyone more than five years older than me. I would prefer that they be older, just because that means they would be more mature. [*]They need to share my interests, or at least they need to tolerate them. I want to share the things I feel passionate about with him, there should not be any moments where I am afraid to talk about something because it would be "awkward for them." [*]If I want to be alone, they need to leave me alone. They have to respect my privacy, because sometimes I need my personal space. [*]They need to smart. I can't stand explaining things to people. It is important that we can talk about a wide variety of topics. [*]They should be a writer, artist, or teacher. Their career is not very important to me, but it generally dictates how intelligent they are. [*]It is important that I like their friends, and that they like mine. I do not want to feel alienated if I ever hang out with him and his friends, over time they should become my friends too. [*]They should like to travel and go on trips, if they cannot handle a long car ride then we are in trouble. [*]They need to respect my work schedule. If I take a career in Journalism then I might be working at random hours. [*]They must not smoke, drink or use drugs. I try to be a moral person, they should be too.
-Shy

25. This has been brought up more times than I can count, but I would like everyone to reconsider their stance on the idea of custom titles. This is my idea for how they would work. Staff members would have a little symbol next to their names. Super Moderators would have an "SM", Adminstrators would have a "A", etc. On the line that currently shows our titles we could put custom titles instead. In order to limit the workload that this would cause to Admins and Tech Staff, this could only be available to members who have been here a certain amount of time (instead of post count, because that would only lead to spamming). Also, Bosko would be a really good OB mascot. -Shy
