1. Hi all! I'm looking for a copy of (what I believe is) the oldest known anime still in existence: Obasuteyama ("The Mountain Where Old Women Are Abandoned") by: Sanae Yamamoto, 1924 I would be overjoyed to find it in any format whatsoever: avi, divx, mpeg, .torrent, whatever! Thanks for your time, Paul
 2. Wow, eight responses already! (I guess the 'boards are a bit more active than a year ago... ^_^) Thanks for the input! ReFlux, thanks for reminding me about Yojimbo.. I put it on for the first time in forever yesterday, what a great movie!
 3. I have a question for those on the 'boards who might be a bit more versed in Japanese lore... Why do the ninjas in Naruto and other movies/series (Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo spring to mind) run the way they do? For example, in Naruto, when the ninjas have to run though a field or whatever, they lean wa-a-ay forward and throw their arms out behind them. (In the first episode of the Ninja Scroll TV series, Roga runs through the forest in almost exactly the same way.) I'm just wondering if there's any reason this strange (to my eye) style of running pops up now and again in ninja-themed anime? Is this some form of conveyance actually used by ninjas, or just a stylistic norm for depicting running ninjas in anime? Thanks in advance! ^_^
 4. Tch! Got here too late... You guys have scarfed up all the best feature-length anime! Ah well. ^_^ Movies like CB:Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, and Tezuka's Metropolis definitely top my list... As far as series go, I'm always pimping Samurai Champloo, and lately I can't seem to stop thinking about GITS:Standalone Complex 2nd GIG. (Especially the Tachikoma/attack helicopter chase at the end of the fourth episode!) Just amazing, both in terms of visceral response, and the technical perfection of the blending of 2- and 3-D animation.
 5. Lately, I've got to go with Mugen from Watanabe's new masterpiece-in-the-making, Samurai Champloo. The whole series just drips with style, but Mugen's attitude and break dance-inspired fighting style are way over the top... ^_^ All-time? Probably have to go with "Major" Kusanagi from GITS, or Kaneda from the Akira manga. (I think Kaneda comes off as a lot stronger in the manga than in the movie, in terms of his motivation and personality.) Just my $0.02...
 6. Well, I was reading through AD's anime FAQ tonight, and found to my dismay that all three of my Cowboy Bebop soundtracks (Music for Freelance, O.S.T. Future Blues, and CD-Box) are all bootlegs. What's really surprising to me is the quality of the packaging, especially the CD-Box! It's in the same type of die-cut, pressure-formed cardboard sleeve that the "real" CD-Box is shipped in, and even includes the 50-odd page booklet... dammit! I thought I had purchased legitimate copies that were actually helping the artists, but instead I've invested roughly a hundred bucks in a Chinese bootlegging operation. This got me thinking... I know that a *lot* of people have no problem whatever buying (or downloading) bootleg audio... And I'm certainly not one to point a finger, as I used to run an extremely popluar MP3 server. What do you guys and gals think about this? Is there a way to pick out the bootlegs from the legitimate releases, besides just having a preternatural instinct for pirate CD's and DVD's? A question for all the P2P'ers on the boards... (ahoy, me hearties! ?_?) Is there anything that would make you stop swapping bootlegs? e.g., would an across-the-board drop in CD/DVD prices convince you to purchase music, if you knew the money was actually going to make it to the artist? Or perhaps, a reliable, secure online distribution model? (Please note, I'm not trying to take an elitist stance on this, I'm just interested in the future of rights management tech.) Same question for the people who still buy stuff... What changes do you see in these industries, as the RIAA continues to sue it's own customers? (Possibly the silliest business model ever...) Will the next big thing in digital audio and video come from the Big Four, or (as I tend to think) will it be more of a grassroots thing? Obviously just not paying for stuff isn't going to work in the long run... Tch. This is embarassing.. And frustrating! I work hard for my money, and when I spend it on anime/manga, I want to know that it's going to the people who deserve it -- the directors, animators, composers, and etc. that produce this stuff! If I had a hundred extra dollars, I'd PayPal it to Yoko Kanno right now. ?_?
 7.
yeah im aware that
vash killed Legato
but that was only one, and Vash's nature, isn't to kill...
I think we're on the same side here... ?_? I was just pointing out that 1/2 of your original point might be misleading.
 8. I've been a couple of times, once to a woods course, and once to a big commercial warehouse-type deal. I definitely prefer the woods, just because it feels a little more like actual combat. (said the suburban computer geek... heh. ?_?) Anyway, I'd definitely recommend that you go at least once, just to say you've done it! It's a lot of fun, and the bruises go away in a day or two. ?_?
 9.
the end of cowboy bebop should have been more of a fight instead of a quick draw
I should have clarified, I was talking about the whole scene, starting with Spike walking into the Red Dragon high-rise. Not just the very end where Spike and Vicious have that Mexican stand-off.. But yeah, I can see how that could be disappointing. I guess they wanted a different kind of fight than the one between Spike and V. at the end of Ballad of Fallen Angels..?
 10.
1. Vash doesn't kill 2. He did wrap him in bandages, and carry him back..
Well, actually
Vash did kill Legato!
Man, that scene was hard-core... But I think I'm going to side with the "Knives lives" folks. ?_? As has been pointed out many times, Vash never hit any vital areas on Knives, and in fact
only shot the two "Angel Arm" guns in that last scene.
11. The Vincent vs. Spike fight is definitely top-five, that's some killer Jeet Kune Do right there! ?_? It's even more impressive when you think about how much work went into animating it! It would be great if it were live-action, but as an animated piece, it's just mind-blowing... Second on my list would be Vash vs. Knives at the end of the Trigun series... I'm a big fan of John Woo-style gun battles, and as far as anime goes, this is one of the better ones I've seen. They're so evenly matched (and both so GOOD!), that you don't know at any time during the fight who's going to be walking away. But my favorite fight scene of all time, anime or otherwise, is the final fight between Vicious and Spike in CB Episode 26. I suppose I hardly need to elaborate on this fight, as it's one of the more often-referenced scenes whenever people are talking about anime. Suffice it to say,
when Spike died at the end of this fight, it elevated CB from a great anime to archetype status.
Bloody fantstic... ?_?
 12.
I used to wonder what the world was like back then, as I thought that everything (not just TV) was in black and white.
heh, that's great... ?_? hey, didn't Watterson do a Calvin & Hobbes about that, once?
 13. I remember the first time I watched Scarface, I couldn't really say anything when the movie ended... and like an hour later, I wouldn't shut up about it! ?_? Amazing movie, just bloody great. Actually, I was rooting for Montana!
I really wanted him to somehow survive that huge gunfight at the end...
Tch. Such is life...
 14. Let's see. wierd kid stuff... We had this really small b+w TV when I was a kid, and because it was all I'd ever seen, I guess my brain made some sort of leap and started coloring the shows for me. Hard to describe... Anyway, it was well into the second season of He-Man when I saw it for the first time in color, at my Grandmother's house. I was outraged when I saw that Battle-Cat was green, and not bright orange, as I'd seen him every day for over a year! There were several other color-corrections made that day, but that's the one that stuck with me. (To top it off, when I went back to my house the next day, Battle-Cat had magically turned green on my tv set, and was never seen as orange again! wierd... ?_?)
 15. I loved POTUSA back when they first came out... "Lump", especially, was definitely unique and fun enough to stick out in my head as being an important song for my teenage years. I have two of their other albums, "II", and "Freaked out and Small." None of the new songs are really all that great, with the notable exceptions of "Toob Amplifier" and "Death Star", if only for sheer quirkyness.
