F-word in Cobain quote sparks controversy
I, Colossus replied to Rachmaninoff's topic in General Discussion
(Actually I don't consider anything a "swear word". But that's just me being difficult. As Usual.)
Yeah, sorry if I'm getting too off subject, but I completely agree. I've never understood the concept of a word being "bad". It's not what it actually means, because there are several synonyms that are perfectly ok to use. So what in the world makes letters arranged in a certain order "bad"? Kind of ridiculous if you ask me. -
I had a Twitter for ten minutes. I think you'll live just fine.
Could you be more condescending?? Serious business here, folks.
Do any of you guys listen to Little Brother? If so, any song recs? I only have their song Watch Me and I want more but I'm also lazy.
Get the album "The Minstrel Show". Classic stuff. I know you asked for songs but this is somewhat of a concept album, and definitely worth it.
Pretty amazing stuff right here. A great lyricst and a super original song concept.
Holy ****. I'm a huge hip-hop head and I managed to miss this somehow. Thanks for posting. incredible. Anyway, people just checkin in to say get ready for Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx 2. It's finally coming out in Sept. and the single "Wu Ooh" is great. Throwback to the Wu's golden days.

I Forgot What You People Look Like (Image Heavy)

Definitely some good ones so far, particularly Damien Rice. The Blowers Daughter is beatiful and the entire album is heartwrenching. When it comes to "romantic" songs, or songs about love I generally listen to songs on the other end of the spectrum. I think BOTH sides of love are essential to the human expirience. So, I'm going to throw in a few depressing songs (dealing with love) for good measure, lol. First off, All I Really Want To Do by the legendary Bob Dylan is probably my favorite love song, and the most true to my own expiriences with the emotion. Both All I Want Is You, and Anybody Else But You from the Juno soundtrack are extremely cute and simple love songs. There are a really good amount of love songs from the Scrubs soundtrack that I really enjoy too. The main one being Question? by the Old 97s. Really good alt-country band I fell in love with a few years back (when I heard Adelaide), they just performed here last Friday and I missed it cause of stupid money issues. :( Fresh Feeling by the Eels. Dreaming Of You by the Coral. And finally Our Love by Rhett Miller, the frontman of the Old 97s. A few others that come to mind (no more links, ha, tired of that) are:

Because + I've Just Seen A Face by The Beatles
Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
Beck's cover of "True Love Will Find You In The End"*
Destiny by Zero 7
First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes
* For the record, I prefer the original by Daniel Johnston, but Beck's version is probably a tad more acessable. I'll be back to edit the heartbreak list, I require some gin, a joint, and some tissues before I attempt that, ha.

Oh, I really liked the inclusion of the aliens. lol
I thought it made a lot of sense, for two reasons.
One, David was under that ocean for thousands of years...a very, very long time. And related to that, the aliens are there to demonstrate that mankind has become extinct. They need some intelligent species to replace mankind, if you think about it -- otherwise, David isn't going to have that experience with his mother or anything. The movie would have just ended at that point. I also loved the fact that the aliens were compassionate beings. They weren't your typical "blow up the earth" type of aliens. They came across as being enlightened and generous, which I think really fit in well with what was going on.

This is an extremely old thread. But just for the record
those were advanced robots, not aliens.
So... what did you get for Christmas?
I, Colossus replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
Asked for nothing. Got a computer. I love my daddy. :) The celebration was shortlived though. My sister had a miscarriage. :( -
Just thought I'd post my friend code really quick, I'm adding everyone in the thread. 1289-7906-8602 I'm really interested in seeing how well this works, so let's go fellas. :)

OMG pretty fun. Been playing with my friends for bout an hour. Already unlocked Ness. I've just been playing with Pokemon Trainer, mainly with Squirtle. What does the great Otekuboards think so far? The loading times are pretty wack though...
First. I am a new member. My interests include art, counter-culture, and the occasional recreational drug use. I also enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelit dinners, and donkey shows.
So, in the spirit of getting to know you better. Just pot? Other psychadelics, too?? Or do you mess with the rough stuff? I've been somewhat of a pothead for about a year now. I've tried salvia and DXM, both of which were pretty fun. Though, I've stopped with the DXM use, it just seems...unnatural or something. :P I'm planning on trying Shrooms and DMT eventually, but I've yet to get the opportunity. Anyway, since the userbase has almost completely changed while I've been away, and I've changed too, I figure I should tell a little about myself. I've been around OB for a while, this account goes back to 03, but I first joined when I was in the 7th grade. I've had a million namechanges and whatnot but "Cyko" and "Shroom" are probably the names I stuck with the longest. Now, I'm a freshman in community college, work full time and Burger King, and still have no real aspirations for the future. Basically I came back (well, I've been lurking for a while now) because I started watching anime again (Claymore and Paranoia Agent) and I just got nostalgic for this place. I missed it. Seems lame, but way back when this place was a pretty big part of my life, as big as as website can be anyway. So, I'm back. :animesmil

I've been around for quite a while. If anyone remembers me it'd probably be as "Cyko" or "Shroom" though, not Frog Brigade. I don't know. I still lurk here a lot. I just never have anything to say, ever. I'm having a hard time justifying this post, actually, haha. But, I have to ask. QA, is that treton_noir's baby you're having?

As much as I loves me some Raekwon, I havent got a chance to listen to that whole album, so I'm neutral on it for now.

DeadSeraphim, listen to Wu-Tang man. Now. As for Ol' Dirty Bastard being the best of Wu-Tang, I wouldnt really agree. But the Wu-Tang memebers are almost IMPOSSIBLE to rate against eachother. First of all, they're nine of the best MCs this world has ever seen, and second of all they have so many ****** side-projects thats it's hard to keep up with. As far as in-Wu stuff, I'd have to say that: GZA > Method > Ghostface > Inspectah Deck > Ol' Dirty Bastard > Raekwon > Masta Killa > U-God -- But it's so damn close it's not even worth ranking. Solo stuff is easy. GZA wins with ease. Liquid Swords is a candidate for best hip-hop album of all time. Ghostface is 2nd. Method is 3rd, if only for the first Tical (the sequels were weak). ODB would be right below there. And the rest are tied for a distant, distant, distant, distant, distant, 5th. But yeah, they all rock, so theres no point in arguing. Also, I'm buying this today. Looks good. One of the few Wu-Side Projects I havent heard.

About the freestyling thing, it's kindof psuedo-freestyling. It's the exact same writing process Nas and every MC usues, just without paper. I do find it impressive, but I don't think it would effect who I think is better. B.I.G. and Nas are about tied as lyricism goes. But overall B.I.G. definitely wins, he was way more consistent in his greatness. Unlike Nas, I still can't believe how wack Nastradamus is. :( Andt yeah, Wu-Tang Clan is un-****ing-believeable. The one thing I love most about Wu-Tang is how different all the MCs are. I was just thinking about how when I was a youngin listenin to Wu-Tang, I always considered Method one of the weakest links, and RZA one of the strongest. And now, years later, thats reversed. I'm starting to think that Method Man (method's solo song) is the best track on Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). Oh, and man you should check out this album called Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets the Indie-Culture. It has guys like MF Doom, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, members of Cannibal Ox, all collaborating with Wu artists. It's ****ing ill.
Well, that is your opinion I suppose. I think the reason you say "Takeover" is lesser to "Ether" maybe the fact that Jay-Z was attacking mutliple opponents in "Takeover"
Yeah, but Jay-Z released another (and even weaker) dis to Nas after "Ether".
Personally, I love Nas and Jay-Z, but for me, Jay-Z is just easier to listen to. I mean, for me, I just can't get into some of Nas' music, because he just seems too dark or moody, where is I like MC's with more energy.
I definitely understand that. Nas has some pretty upbeat, more energetic, and lighthearted songs, but honestly those are usually the tracks where people start claiming he fell off. I dont really agree with them, but those are definitely his weakest links.
I mean, yeah, I'll admit Nas is a great MC, but I really don't think he got any better after "Illmatic". After that album, most people believe he went down hill
It's not Nas' fault you can't top perfection, haha.
where is, after "Reasonable Doubt", Jay-Z simply continued moving up and exploring different musical styles.
Eh. I definitely don't agree with that. Do you really think anything off of the Black Album, Blueprint, etc. etc. can match up with Dead Presidents II, or D'evils?
I mean, for me, "Hard Knock Life" is better than any song Nas can provide.
Blasphemy. haha, that's probably the biggest insult to Nas I've ever heard. ahah. Hard Knock Life (which I dont particularly care for, but to each his own) simply can't match the lyricism of a bunch of Nas' songs. Rewind/NY State of Mind/Nas is Like, etc. etc. -- I understand that you simply like HKL better, but can we at least agree that in this particular case Nas is the superior lyricist?
Regardless, I think Jay-Z won that little battle, seeing as how he released more albums, freestyles all his material
Well theres one thing we agree, not so much the batte/album thing, but Jay-Z is infinitely better than Nas when it comes to freestyling. But thats not too much of a compliment because Nas' freestyles are horrible, ahha.
Haha. So, even if he lost the battle, he won the war. Haha.
Yeah, with no questions you got me there. I was pretty pissed when I heard about him signing with Def Jam or whatever. I thought the fact that they reconciled was Ok, but man, partnering up? After you called eachother's rhymes trash, said you ****** eachother's wives, and threatened death? That's weak.

Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and all the usual fare. Can't help myself, they're spectacular. Recently though, I've been absolutely obsessed with Tortoise. I bought TNT and Millions Now Living Will Never Die about a month ago. I quite like Millions Now Living..., but I think I've about worn TNT out. I've never been much for instrumental music in the past (except for the occasional Pelican song), because I put a lot of value on lyrics, but I must say Toroise is an amazing band, and I think lyrics/vocals would actually hinder their talents. TNT is a ****ing spectacular album, definitely check it out.

I replied the last time you made this (or a similar) thread, I think it's my latest post actually, lol. But yeah, since that thread my tastes for hip-hop have changed quite a bit. First order of business: Jay-Z, possibly the most overrated MC of all time. Not trying to insult you or something, but Nas (greatest of all time) absolutely mauled him. Listen to "Takeover" (Jay-Z) and "Ether" (Nas) side by side, and tell me who won that battle. If your answer is Jay-Z then you need your ears checked, even Jay-Z admitted he lost. Nas killing him isn't why I dont like him though, Nas could pretty much destroy anyone at anytime. Other than a couple of songs here and there, scattered throughout his many albums, Reasonable Doubt is the only thing he has going for him. And even that album has a couple weak links. Not to mention a good majority of his verses were directly stolen from B.I.G., Rakim, and the like. But yeah, overall, Jay-Z, like Eminem, is way too overhyped and as far as I'm concerned, just mediocre. One thing I'm curious about though, does anyone here listen to Canibus? He's amazing. A real contender for best of all time. I invite everyone with even the tiniest interest in Hip-Hop to listen to "Second Round K.O." (aka LL Cool J being destroyed), "Poet Lauret II", "100 Bars", or "2,000 BC". All spectacular, all showcase his skills well. Actually, I retract that, 2nd Round K.O. is a tad weaker than the rest of his stuff, still enough to make LL Cool J his ***** though. Other than that I've been diggin' on the following artists a lot lately: Wu-Tang Clan (plus Method, GZA, and Ghostface's solo work), early Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, Slick Rick, Rakim, Big L, Gangstarr, KRS-One, Mos Def, etc. etc.

As long as Veronica Mars is still on, this doesnt affect me much at all. But I just wanted to ask one thing: Did anyone catch the CW shoutout (aka Season 3 confirmation) in the finale? -- I

As far as southern hip-hop goes, Little Brother is probably the only group I enjoy. All of my friends buy all the chopped and screwed mixtapes and what not. Like "Whut It Dew" and all that crap with Bun B, Cham, Slim Thug, etc. etc. And as much as I've tried, I can't enjoy it. Other than Cham completely destroying Mike Jones on that 3 CD mix he put out, I've gotten absolutely no enjoyment out of any of them. In terms of "underground" artists (not talkin Jeezy or Ludacris), there is nothing distiguishing them from eachother. While I agree with Mugen's statement on a general basis, " Hip Hop isn't about cars, clothes, and women. ", it just isnt true with a majority of the artists getting airplay. Also Jeezy is probably the most overrated rapper of all time. People were calling Thug Motivation album of the year, placing it above Be and The Minstrel Show, so I automatically went out and bought. Biggest. Dissapointment. Ever. Not only is it not even close to the AOTY, it's a contender for worst album of the year. Personal favorites of mine are: Big L, Gravediggaz, Giant Panda, Buck 65, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Geto Boys, Quasimoto, Gang Starr, Dead Prez (flawed/annoying political views aside, they still kick ***), KRS-One, Sage Francis, Dizzee Rascal, Common, Little Brother, etc. etc.

Out of the four shows listed, I?ve only enjoyed one: Night Stalker. Both Surface?s concept and execution are laughable, it?s probably the worst new show I?ve seen this season. I?m honestly surprised it hasn?t been cancelled yet. I doubt many people would disagree with me on this. It?s seems more like a SciFi channel TV movie than a series on NBC. Supernatural & Invasion are both pretty interesting, I?ll give them that. Invasion (the worse of the two) is mediocre at best. It?s produced really well, you can tell ABC wants this to be the next big thing. But I can?t stand the writing, and in particular the dialogue. Unfortunately I haven?t seen Supernatural yet, but I plan on watching it next time around. Night Stalker (which I?ve only seen the pilot of) on the other hand was cleverly written, executed well, and had some great performances.
-
I guess thats a rather graceful way to go out. -- I understand it's not your type of show, and that's fine. But I would've defended it forever. But, for the record, I wasn't saying that the first two seasons were bad, but that they had some of the 'repetitive' episodes you spoke of.
-
Just because the episode has a new title doesn't mean its "fresh" as the WB calls it lol.
How many episodes have you even watched, you sound like you?ve watched two episodes and decided it was predictable and boring.
Granted yes the characters have changed a bit, but aside from a couple outlandish episodes (the musical one for example) they're all incredibly similar.
I?m really starting to think that you?ve only seen Season One + Two (and apparently the musical). They?re the only two seasons with monster of the week episodes, which are the only ?similar? episodes in terms of plot. But once they got into Season 3, those episodes pretty much stopped dead in their tracks.
As Shinji said before, they fight a new demon every episode.
You?re very much wrong there. There are plenty of episodes that don?t revolve around any sort of Demon/Vampire/Mystical Being or whatever. Sure, they appear in the episodes, but a lot of the time they mean absolutely nothing. They?re scenery. (Season 5 Spoilers) ? [spoilers]Like in ?The Body?, from your analysis of Buffy, Joyce would?ve been killed by a demon of some sort. No, she died of natural causes. ? Come on, is that predictable? No.

And the characters had to change eventually, or else every episode would be exactly[/B'] the same, rather then just incredibly similar.
If you?ve paid attention at all during Buffy you?d realize that (aside from Season 1 + 2) every episode is extremely different. ? Just to give you an example of an episode. Have you seen ?The Zeppo?? The episode was a spoof of the series. The Hellmouth opened, yet again, and they had their ?hardest battle yet?. You didn?t see any of it, it was nothing. It was the background for an episode about Xander regaining his confidence, that?s completely different.
It gets old, and as much "teen" drama as they want to add to the show, it's just played out already.
I?m guessing you?re calling it angsty, if so, just shut up. :P
wow, Buffy...what a terrible show lol. How generic can you get, a teen fighting demons/monsters and dealing with school and her own life problems at the same time. If you read that without knowing we were talking about Buffy 20 other TV shows could've popped into your head. I mean c'mon, I've seen people ngrossed in this show and it just shows me that they have nothing better to do, and apparently nothing better to watch. If you actually take a step back and look at the show, you'll see just how predictable and cheesy it really is. A lot of the acting is pretty bad as well, it just seems so incredibly obvious and its definitely not a worthwhile show. After they run out of ideas they just begin to bring certain characters back and replay some of the same problems they had before in the show. Sorry to burst your bubble. :animeswea
I?m all for having differing opinions and all. But I?d really like to know what shows you watch that aren?t generic or terrible or cheesy. Just so I can get a better grip on what you like, and how terrible Buffy is in comparison. The interesting thing about buffy isn?t that she?s fighting demons/monsters and dealing with school/life problem at the same time. It?s how they relate to each other. The metaphors hidden within the show, well, not hidden, but, there. Like in Season 2 (Spoilers) ? When Buffy slept with Angel, he lost his soul and became horrible person, like he was before. This happens in real life, girls sleep with guys and it turns the relationship upside down. As for the ?running out of ideas? ****, Buffy was almost always fresh. The reason ? Evolving characters. Buffy in Season 1 is not Buffy in Season 7. They?re polar opposites. Willow is different, Giles is different. But Xander is, admittedly, pretty similar, just a bit more mature. Also, some of the acting was brilliant, James Marsters (Spike), David Boreneaz (Angel), and Sarah-Michelle Gellar (Buffy), in particular. They put on some of the best and most memorable performances on Television. When it comes to cheesy-ness. Yes. Lots and lots of cheesy lines and camp. But I like it, so there is no use arguing it.

Ah, Buffy. What to say about Buffy. The most amazing TV show to ever grace the television screen. This may seem like a bold claim, and it is. And, I bet that if you watch an episode or two, you'll probably disagree. The reason for that is, Buffy doesn't seem like much on it's first few viewings. It actually takes a while to get into it. When I first heard about it on the WB, I thought it sounded retarded. Then I watched it. And I still thought it was retarded, of course I was 8, but that's beside the point. Anyway, over the summer, I started watching the syndicated episodes on F/X. Again, at first, I wasn't impressed. But the characters really started to grow on me. I became engrossed in the story, the evolving charactes, the dramatic sequences, and the intelligent humor. Then, school happened. And I was deprived until recently, when I got DVR. grin.gif So now, I'm a normal watcher. I wont bother with the story, it's pretty appearant from the title. And it'd get really hard to get into with all the long branching story-arcs. So, right now it's syndicated on F/X, it comes on Monday through Friday at 7AM, 8AM, 12PM, 1PM, and occasionaly 2PM. The 7 and 8 episodes are usually the 1 and 2 episodes from the day before too. Also, sometimes movies throw it off scheduel, or, well, let's just say it's not set in stone. It moves around a lot. Sometimes I'll get one episode, sometimes 3, etc. (All Times Eastern) I reccomend everyone watch it on F/X. They're in Season Five (out of seven) right. So it might benefit for you to wait until Season 1 rolls around, especially since Seasons 1 through 3 are the best. Or, you could rent the DVDs, they probably aren't that expensive. And please dont judge it immeadiately, I admit, there are some horrible episodes. They're usually the outlandish ones that give nothing to the story. It's definitely not as consistent as it should be. But overall, it's [ censored ] brilliant. I command thee, go forth and watch. (Very inconsistent and random thread/rant type thing over)
