Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Dagger replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
I want FUNimation to have enough money left over to license Hunter x Hunter (assuming they're not already trying to work out some kind of deal), so I guess I'll be rooting for Sony. :D In an ideal world, Naruto would end up on Toonami... however, it worries me that Case Closed was considered too dark for anything but Adult Swim. Although Full Metal Alchemist is sort of pushing it, that particular series does suit AS better than either Inuyasha or Naruto. It's also a lot more difficult to MST3K, which is a big plus. Both FMA and GitS: SAC are steps in the right direction; Milk-Chan will be if and only if they show the heavily altered dub. ~Dagger~ -
Come on, DBZ is soooo redundant. Geez how many different ways can you punch a guy, give me a break, it is usually the same old thing show after show.
True, but you just described nearly every shounen action series on the planet. While I don't personally care for DBZ, I have noticed that a lot of people scorn it without even bothering to watch ten or twenty episodes in sequential order--often the same people who adore extraordinarily repetitive shows like Inuyasha. Does DBZ really screw up in some significant regard (i.e. plot, characterization, and so forth) or do anime fans just like to hate it because its popularity? Lynn Luck, please PM me, Solo or Queen Asuka the next time you have a question (so as not to drag this thread off-topic). To be honest I'm not quite sure what you're having trouble with--if you want to create a regular hyperlink, use the globe button in the WYSIWYG editor. ~Dagger~
It seems that whenever we think of the term 'homosexuality' we immediatly think of men and I have come to realise that it is far more acceptable to be a gay man than it is to be a gay woman.
In the US, at least, the exact opposite is true. While lesbianism is not always treated respectfully or seriously, there are a lot of people (predominantly male) who think along the same lines as Mr. Midnight Rush. There's definitely something of a double standard in effect, and I would guess that this is because we as a population find it easier to exploit women who sleep with other women than to tolerate men who sleep with other men. ~Dagger~

Turn A Gundam was made in 1999, after Gundam X but before the super-popular SEED. Like X, Turn A Gundam was something of a flop in Japan and currently remains unlicensed. Though this anime has its share of problems, it's well on its way to becoming one of the few Gundam series I actually enjoy watching. It has a pretty unique atmosphere, and at times feels a lot more like a futuristic fantasy than hardcore science-fiction. The main plot has to do with a conflict between the people of the Earth and the "Moon race," two groups which have remained estranged for time immemorial. The inhabitants of the Moon desperately want to return to their home planet. They appear to possess a huge advantage in terms of weaponry, but those who live on Earth are gradually uncovering forgotten relics of their technologically advanced past. Among those relics is--believe it or not--a Gundam. Turn A's soft, muted character designs are markedly different from those seen in Gundam SEED or Gundam Wing. Generally speaking, I really like the show's artwork, but there are certain aspects of it which fall horribly fact. The titular Gundam, for example, looks laughably bizarre: the poor thing sports a metal moustache. Fortunately, Turn A Gundam has a fantastic, gripping story and an interesting cast. The male lead, Loran, is especially intriguing--he's naive and not particularly bright, but extremely capable, optimistic and responsible all the same. Even if you don't like other Gundam anime, Turn A is well worth a cursory look. As far as I know it has no relationship to the other parts of the franchise, so no prior knowledge is needed to watch the series. ~Dagger~
Can we tell people links on a PM or are we not aloud to do that either? I don't think so, but I was just wondering..
Yes, you can. That's the kind of thing private messages are for. And just to make it extra-clear--links themselves are not forbidden, as there are times when pointing out a specific site may help someone resolve an argument or provide pertinent information. However, linking to illegal material (including fansubs) is not permitted. ~Dagger~

Larva, a character in the Vampire Princess Miyu OVA and television series, has a number of very nifty weapons--including his long-nailed hands (which look vaguely like white gloves and can cut through any material), a giant scythe and the ability to generate magical fire. In both romance and battle, he and Miyu make an exceedingly cool pair; it's unfortunate that the TV show kind of... well, sucks. ~Dagger~
>< Actually, Dagger, in anime hair does have more significance than that. Like: people with lighter colored hair (usually white) tend to be the evilest of them all. Halfway, I agree with Yami; if people want to talk about anime and manga character?s hairstyles, let them. I mean, if its interesting to them, why stop them? Its keeping them from screwing up other topics (such as this one). BTW: I may sound like a mod(LOL), but Yami, no double posting. If you had more to say go back and edit. Besides, Dagger, look on the bright side: now you know something else about anime hair. ^_^ I do agree with Dagger, though. My advice is(though I?m not a mod; I just like to contribute) don?t use such a broad topic. With the hair, for instance; something like, How hard is it to draw this style of hair, or, How can you shade black hair, or something. I?m done rambling now. *hands out nachos*
Both of the variations you listed would in all likelihood have to be transferred to the Art Studio, but they are excellent topics in and of themselves. Anyway, back to your first point. While I would have loved to talk about whether or not hair color (and perhaps by extension, other seemingly random superficial attributes) can be said to consistently and accurately reflect characters' personalities... the thread we're discussing did not pose that question, and in fact left little room for any kind of broader debate. ~Dagger~
-
I'm not an administrator, I'm a moderator. And I didn't delete either of those threads; I locked them. ;) The person who posted the hair thread (he also created what has been a rather successful "best weapon" thread) PMed me, saying--
Yeah, well hair in anime is pretty damn cool topic. It was even a question in Animerica, which attracted many results. Maybe you don't have the same opinion, but that's no reason for closing the thread.
I replied--
Good for Animerica. Unfortunately, this is a message board and not a magazine. I can't vet responses in the same way as the editors of the aforementioned publication would have to (well, I can, but frankly I'd rather not). Basically what it boils down to is that weapons generally have some relationship to characters' actions, the outcomes of various fights, etc. Hair... usually doesn't have a bearing on anything except someone's relative hotness or lack thereof. Because of this, the only decent responses your hair thread could attract would be ones that a) described a specific character's hair and the attributes which make it weird, or b) talked about what qualities contribute to hair-related weirdness. Simply put, the vast majority of people aren't going to spend much time or thought on discussing hair. You're welcome to disagree with this if you will, but in my experience threads about aesthetic things ("Who's the best-looking bishounen?" "Which character has the coolest eyes?") degenerate no matter how well they start off. If you'd like a second opinion, try PMing Solo--it's late at night and I may have been less coherent than I had hoped.
That was my reasoning, for whatever it's worth. ~Dagger~

I am frankly appalled that not a single person here has even pretended to heed Solo's graciously written warnings. Thread closed. ~Dagger~

Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Dagger replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
*bursts out laughing* According to an announcement made at Dragon Con, Adult Swim has bought the rights to air ADV's Super Milk-Chan Show! And, yes, it's been confirmed that the next 52 episodes of Case Closed probably won't be shown on TV (unless the series moves to Toonami, where it should have been from the start). I just don't understand what ADV or the CN suits are thinking. ADV has The Anime Network; why the heck are they whoring out their series to other channels? I hope to heaven that AS will air the super-localized (i.e. actually funny) version of Milk-Chan. ~Dagger~ -
Anime Samurai Champloo [from the creator of Cowboy Bebop]
Dagger replied to Dagger's topic in Otaku Central
I normally hate clip jobs, but episode 12 is actually pretty entertaining. Fuu's sheer cuteness, combined with some amusing new material and a bit of insight into how she feels about Mugen and Jin, make this episode well worth watching. The fact that the ED changed gives me reason to wonder whether the series will be twenty-four episodes long (since this sort of thing usually happens about halfway through). ~Dagger~ -
There are tons of horrible animes. Mostly because they were ment to entertain ages 5-10.
Hmm... so are you saying that My Neighbor Totoro is horrible? Personally, I'll take a good children's anime over a pretentious gorefest any day of the week. ~Dagger~

First Raito, then Right... now apparently his name is supposed to be Light. I give up! Raito sounds best anyway. Chapter 31 gave me a huge headache, haha.
It would be easy to take L's assertion at face value--it would make sense for him to genuinely like and value Raito as a true friend. After all, L doesn't exactly try to seek out human companionship. The fact that Raito is probably the first person he's ever met who can keep up with him intellectually adds credence to L's claim. However, I can't help thinking that L is, in his usual candid way, still striving to catch Raito off-balance. Raito was unusually startled when L said, "Raito-kun shouldn't be Kira... but if he were, I would be in turmoil... because Raito-kun is the first friend I've ever had!"
Ooh, maybe that was foreshadowing of some kind. I laughed for about ten minutes when I got to the part where Raito said he wanted to punch Misa. ^_^;; ~Dagger~

This show looks so freaking good on DVD. I can't even begin to stress how glad I am that I bought volume 1--obviously its video quality is infinitely better than those of the fansubs, but the changes go beyond just that. ADV's version of Get Backers, which is identical to that seen on the R2 DVDs, blows the television broadcast out of the water. Not only is it in gorgeous anamorphic widescreen (though I mentioned this in an earlier post, I still can't get over it), but also boasts extra footage and--if my eyes aren't deceiving me--subtly cleaned-up animation. That's not all; Get Backer's dub is one of the best I've heard in quite a while. Honestly, I think I prefer it to the Japanese version (no more Engrish!). From the very start of episode 1, every single character sounds perfect. Ginji and Ban in particular are exceptionally well acted. Although the box is the crappy folded type that ADV gives to most non-GONZO series, at least it has some nifty artwork. In all other regards, Get Backers volume 1 is a fantastic product and more than worth its price for almost any fan of action and comedy. ~Dagger~

If the elections were held tomorrow, who would you vote for?
Dagger replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I'm, going to spam in response, sorry mods:
Since when has a flippant apology ever given anyone the right to spam? You've been here for a while; you should know better. If you don't have anything intelligent to say, then don't say anything at all. @bigspike: It upsets me that people and the press are talking more about the Vietnam war than the one that's going on right now. God knows John Kerry practically brought this mess upon himself, but that doesn't make the Swift Boat ads any less pathetic or crass. At least McCain had the decency to condemn them. That aside, what do you mean by "political skills"? I don't quite understand how being injured thirty-five years ago relates to lacking such skills today. Given my druthers, I'd want someone who's actually experienced war to work on getting us in and/or out of military conflicts. ~Dagger~ -
I honestly don't see how this thread could possibly attract intelligent discussion. Weapons (in reference to your other new topic) are one thing; hair is something else entirely. If you feel otherwise, you're quite welcome to PM me for a detailed explanation. Thread closed. ~Dagger~

While I would also love to see a second season of Fruits Basket, I did enjoy the ending of the original series. Given recent developments in the manga, I'm not certain that it would be possible for future episodes to cover some of the most monumental plot twists without making the first season look slightly... well, wrong. Moreover, some key characters were never even introduced in the anime, which would make incorporating them into a potential second season difficult and awkward at best. Please don't read the following paragraphs unless you aren't averse to learning about some really colossal spoilers.
First of all, as was revealed in the lastest chapter of the manga released in Japan, Akito is actually a woman. Secondly--and this is more general--in the Fruits Basket manga, Shigure is generally portrayed as being much more conniving, devious and ruthless than he is in the anime. There's a pretty good chance that he will end up being the ultimate bad guy. Since he's such a benign figure in the television series, I don't know how later episodes would be able to go about showing the darker aspects of his nature while simultaneously advancing the storyline.
But then again, Akitaroh Daichi is a genius. Maybe he could pull it off after all. ~Dagger~

If the elections were held tomorrow, who would you vote for?
Dagger replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in General Discussion
I'd vote for Kerry as the lesser of two (well, three) evils. I don't like the man very much, but I like Bush and Nader even less. John Edwards isn't so bad. Haha, Alex, I was also fairly impressed by Kerry's performance on The Daily Show. If nothing else, he proved that he a) has a sense of humor and b) isn't a total block of wood. ~Dagger~ -
So far the first seven episodes have been subbed. To be honest, Otogizoushi hasn't impressed me as consistently as either of the series I mentioned at the beginning of this thread. I'm waiting for some kind of big overarching plot to emerge. I don't care whether it deals with political intrigue, romance, family drama or supernatural problems--I'll take any of those. However, a prolonged hunt for the remaining magatama just won't cut it. Perhaps I'm being a little unfair, but in my opinion Hikaru has still not been genuinely tested. As she herself mentioned, she's relied on others throughout her journey. I mean, while she can obviously take care of herself (as was made quite clear by her sudden display of martial arts skills in episode 7), nothing has really forced her to seize a position of leadership. Tsuna and even Sadamitsu simultaneously submit to her and prod her along in the right direction. I kind of want to see her rise up as a type of conquering Mulan/Jeanne d'Arc, heh. ~Dagger~

This thread concerned me from the start. Although the creator posed a specific question, most of the subsequent respondents didn't really answer it, instead posting the two or three-sentence equivalent of "me, too." I just don't see the topic going anywhere, not to mention promoting the kind of quality discussion we generally strive for. Thread closed. ~Dagger~

Earlier today, ANN relayed an interesting TV Tokyo announcement that had been previously posted on several other sites. The station is going to start broadcasting a fifty-two episode Viewtiful Joe anime in October, which I assume is at least somewhat connected to the fact that Viewtiful Joe 2 is coming out in Japan sometime this fall. I haven't played the game and know very little about it, but I'm aware that it has at least a couple of fans on OB. Hopefully the anime will be able to a) stand alone and b) serve as more than just a giant advertisement for the other parts of the franchise. ~Dagger~

Anime Cartoon Network Line-Ups...and anime on television announcements
Dagger replied to Syk3's topic in Otaku Central
One Piece will debut at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 18. The latest 4Kids press release offered a brief synopsis of the series.
As a young boy in a small port village, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by his childhood hero "Red-Haired" Shanks. But when he accidentally ate the cursed Gum-Gum Fruit, he gained the power to stretch like rubber ... at the cost of never being able to swim again! Despite this limitation, Luffy vowed to grow up to become the king of the pirates, and find the greatest pirate treasure of all -- the pirate Gold Roger's legendary "One Piece."
That sounds more or less accurate to me. I'm looking forward to seeing how they magically transform Sanji's cigarette into a lollipop. ~Dagger~ -
Anime Any anime characters you pity, worship, or fear?
Dagger replied to Dreamer's topic in Otaku Central
Er... what now? Please be sure to read the rules and put some serious work into your post quality, empath_angel. Bear in mind that unless you tell us which series all of these characters are from, very few people will be able to figure out what the heck you're talking about. ~Dagger~ -
Discuss Anime Stereotype High School Underground [PG-VSL]
Dagger replied to Solo Tremaine's topic in Theater
I'm going to post soon-ish, but right now I'm a bit burned out in terms of writing (due to a bunch of real-life stuff I have going on at the moment). If you'd like my character to do something specific, just drop me a PM or something. At the moment I couldn't come up with an original idea to save my life. -_- ~Dagger~ -
It sounds to me like you're really looking for family-friendly anime--which would be more sensible than the alternative, since (as Sciros explained) it'd be borderline impossible to find series that deal with specifically Christian themes but aren't incredibly offensive and/or factually incorrect. What other kinds of "thematic material" (besides stuff dealing with sexuality, I mean) do you consider inappropriate? ~Dagger~
