Dagger replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
Hey there, densuke. ^_^ As OtakuBoards does not permit double-posting, I merged your previous two replies. If you have any questions or comments regarding the nature of this policy, don't hesitate to PM me. ~Dagger~ -
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A man appearing in a videotape claiming to be a military spokesman for Al Qaeda in Europe says al Qaeda was behind Thursday's bombings in Madrid that killed 200 people. Spanish and U.S. authorities were trying to determine the authenticity of the tape. The videotape, released by Interior Minister Angel Acebes and signed by Abu Dujan Al Afgani, says: "We declare our responsibility for what occurred in Madrid, just 2.5 years after the attacks in New York and Washington. It is a response to your collaboration with the criminals (U.S. President) Bush and his allies. "This is a response to the crimes that you have caused in the world and specifically in Iraq and in Afghanistan. And there will be more, God willing. "You love life and we love death which gives you an example of what the prophet Mohammed said that if you do not stop your injustices, the blood will flow more and more, and these attacks will seem very small with what could occur with what you call terrorism. "This is a message from the military spokesman for al Qaeda in Europe." The Interior Ministry issued a Spanish translation of the Arabic message on the tape, and Acebes held an early-Sunday news conference saying Spanish law enforcement had obtained it. A ministry spokesman told CNN that the regional television station Telemadrid received a phone call about 7:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) Saturday from a man who spoke in Arabic with a Moroccan accent. The man had called the station's switchboard and said there was a videotape in a trash receptacle between the main mosque and a main highway, M-30, in Madrid. Investigators went to the location and got the tape, which they checked to be sure it was not booby-trapped. The Basque separatist group ETA, meanwhile, has issued a statement denying any role in the Madrid train bombings that killed 200 people, the Basque newspaper Gara said on its Web site on Sunday, as Spain's general election began. (Full story) A caller in the name of ETA previously had phoned Gara and Basque public television to deny any role in the attacks, Reuters reports. In other developments, Spanish authorities arrested five people Saturday as part of the investigation into the bombings. The five arrested are linked to a prepaid telephone card found with an undetonated bomb hours after Thursday's devastating terror attack, Acebes added. "Early this afternoon, the National Police have detained five people," Acebes told reporters in a nationally televised news conference. "Three Moroccan citizens, two Indian citizens. There are also two other Spanish citizens of Indian origin from whom we are taking statements. "All [were detained] for their presumed implication in the sale and falsification of the cell phone and cell phone card found in the bag which did not explode." The backpack was found on a train after Thursday's attacks and detonated by police. It also held the explosive ECO; metal pieces intended to multiply a bomb's destructive effect, a detonator and a mobile telephone, the Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported. The news came on the eve of national elections, as thousands of demonstrators gathered at the headquarters of the ruling political party. The protesters were accusing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar of covering up the investigation of the terrorist attacks. The demonstrators accuse the Popular Party of covering up evidence linking Islamic extremists, possibly even al Qaeda, to the attacks.
Juuthena, I think the article quoted above speaks for itself. Please don't assume that people are blaming Al Qaeda simply because they make easy scapegoats. EDIT: Guess you didn't see my post, HC. ^_^; Yes, Al Qaeda appears to have claimed responsibility for the attack. ~Dagger~
. . . . If this is true then it annoys me the way people talk about Al Qaeda as one thing that has the same values and moral ideals as the other parts. It's like saying that Microsoft and Open Source are the same since they share a common goal and medium.
I don't think that's a particularly accurate analogy. Frankly, I couldn't give a **** about the morals and values (or lack thereof) that various terrorist groups hold in high esteem. They're terrorists because they engage in "the unlawful use of violence against people or property with the intention of intimidating/coercing governments, often for political/ideological reasons." Their goals are less important than the means they use to get there. The potential validity of a terrorist's ideals is totally nullified by the fact that he or she's a terrorist.
A terrorist is a terrorist right?
Damn, I was going to say that. ;P
Well I wouldn't but how do you know that some of these groups aren't fighting a good cause or that they are more likely to use peaceful means to achieve what they want. (Plus I'm getting sick of people pinning things on Al Qaeda, it's like buzz word of the decade!)
More likely, more schmikely. If an organization is categorized as a terrorist group, chances are that it has done something to injure and kill civilians. No cause can possibly be good enough to justify the deployment of suicide bombers. The Spanish government didn't even want to "pin" it on Al Qaeda (thanks for setting me straight about the spelling, Sciros). I'm sure an ETA attack would have been more advantageous for them politically; in fact, some Spaniards have accused officials of covering up discoveries that pointed to Al Qaeda being responsible for the bombing. It's not as though we're making totally unfounded accusations. ~Dagger~

Undefeated, please refrain from quoting the entirety of an image-heavy post if you only plan on writing a single paragraph. Here's a rule to live by--never allow the length of your actual reply to be less than that of the material you're quoting. There are obviously exceptions (i.e. when you want to discuss a press release or some other kind of article), but this is not one of them. Thank ye kindly. Although I edited your post, I'd rather not be forced to do so in the future. ^_^ Moving on....
(Plus: Their Ray needs to go to Jenny Craig)

But to change the looks of Asuka is terrible! I feel sick.... Thats disgusting, Asuka looked sooo fine (for an anime girl, I'm not wierd like that)....
*takes a deep breath* It's funny you should say that, Undefeated. Some of the comments I've read on this subject have sickened me as well. Asuka appears extraordinarily gorgeous because she is not an actual human being. It would be very difficult to find a healthy, non-anorexic actress whose body type was even mildly similar to hers. Some things--such as inhuman thinness--simply can't translate from anime to real life. I'm 110 lbs, which is a healthy weight for someone of my age and height (5' 3"). As an anime character, however, I would seem morbidly obese. OtakuSennen, tell me the last time you saw a girl with a body like the one shown in WETA's depiction of Ray. She's not ******* fat. In fact, she's not even particularly muscular. It disgusts me that people are judging these drawings by anime standards of beauty... the real actresses could look quite different, but I'll guarantee you now that none of them will be as slender as the animated girls. ~Dagger~

Welcome to OtakuBoards, Twilight. ^_^ I'm not quite sure what to do about this topic. Would you mind if I re-titled it so as to allow for discussion of all things .hack//SIGN-related? Because its series-specific forum is now closed, the AL currently lacks a .hack thread. Also, I suspect that much (or perhaps all) of the Epitaph could come to certain people as a surprise--I know little about .hack//SIGN, but I have seen members spoiler-tag portions of the poem. Please PM me as soon as possible and let me know whether I should convert this into our official .hack topic, and/or add spoiler tags to your post. It might be helpful if you wrote a brief explanation of the Epitaph's significance. Not everyone will be able to recognize its origin, and some might simply think that it's a random piece of poetry. Thank you very much. ^_^ ~Dagger~
Now, sometimes the more properly based it is the BETTER it is (as would have been the case with Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter), but usually it makes more sense to think of the film as a separate work. That's the whole point of "adaptation." In the end you gotta do whatever it takes to make a better film, whether that means adding extra material, cutting stuff out, following the source material exactly, whatever.
Actually, I don't think that applies to either LotR or Harry Potter. The Lord of the Rings movies are excellent films because they differ greatly from their source material. Peter Jackson excised a sizeable chunk of Fellowship of the Ring, and even chose not to include the popular (but for all plot-related purposes, irrelevant) character Tom Bombadil. He also gave Arwen Undomiel a far more important role than she originally had in Tolkien's trilogy. Although these changes offended certain purists, the general public seemed to like them very much. Neither of the HP films, on the other hand, succeeded in enthralling me. They feel unwieldy and poorly paced because their director did not take enough liberties with the books' storylines. I agree whole-heartedly with your final statement.... that rule of thumb has very few exceptions. The Eva film will probably be marketed as an action blockbuster. One thing is certain--it definitely won't be aimed directly at anime fans, not with the kind of money that's going into its creation. ~Dagger~

Jim Hawkins, please search the forum (or check our brand spanking new "Directory" sticky) before creating another series thread. Doing so takes about two seconds, and spares the mods a great deal of trouble. Thanks in advance. ^_^ ~Dagger~
I've already made up an anime story... :D my main character is Naori
Welcome to OtakuBoards, Inu-yashas-girl. ^_^ As you neither described your anime's basic plot nor told us who this Naori person is, I had no choice but to delete your post. After spending all the time to required to come up with a coherent storyline, surely you can devote a few additional minutes to telling us about it. ~Dagger~
Al Qaeda doesn't seem like the "forgive and forget" type. These radical groups have a tendancy to hold grudges.
Congratulations, CS. You just won my highly coveted "Understatement of the Week" award. ^_~ At this point I think it's obvious that Al Qaeda/Queda (anyone care to tell me which spelling is more correct?) espouses violence for the sake of violence. They don't really have any kind of political purpose or agenda.... I recently skimmed a piece in Time that quoted one of their videotapes as saying, "You love life. We love death"--those words are an approximation, since my copy of the magazine is currently missing, but I think they get the basic point across. Like you said, Spain's withdrawal will do nothing to appease Al Qaeda. So here's my question: is removing the troops the right decision? ~Dagger~

When I first heard of the attack, I remained relatively unaffected. It seems as though there are terrible atrocities in the news almost every single day, and I have to admit that violence no longer upsets me like it should. But the next day I saw an article (complete with some truly incredible pictures) about the Spanish people's solidarity. Halfway through reading it, I sat down and burst into tears. The fact that such a thing could occur even after our much-touted war on terrorism--the fact that it happened to one of America's closest allies..... Sometimes I don't know what to think about the world. But in any case, I'm also of the opinion that Al Queda was behind this. ~Dagger~
I'd wanna live in GTO. He's soo cool! Or Evangelion. I like mecha.
Welcome to OtakuBoards, Onizuka. ^_^ I deleted your post (quoted above) as it was rather borderline. We occasionally allow one or two-line replies, but only if they offer some kind of brilliant insight or would be made redundant by further elaboration. Next time, please explain why you think Onizuka is cool, and why you like Evangelion. It shouldn't take up that much time... all you need to do is type, "I'd love to run around in a giant clomping robot, and Onizuka's laid-back attitude really appeals to me. He'd be so much fun to hang out with." See what I mean? If you have any questions, PM me or one of the other moderators. ~Dagger~
if u made ur own anime, wat would it be about?(im really bored)
You should thank Sciros, SailorMelina. He single-handedly saved this thread from certain closure. From now on, please put more thought and effort into your replies; this includes using proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, etc. If you have any questions regarding how to improve your post quality, feel free to PM me or one of the other moderators. Grey Aurora, I'd like to learn more about your manga. Why don't you find the time to edit in a brief explanation of its plot? ~Dagger~

*smiles* She and Her Cat was created by Makoto Shinkai. He animated, directed and produced the short without any outside assistance, making it one of anime's few genuinely independent films. If his name rings any bells, it's because he also made the popular and critically acclaimed OVA Voices of a Distant Star, which happens to be among my favorite anime of all time. I watched She and Her Cat because it's included on my VoaD DVD. The DVD comes with two different versions of the short: one clocks in at three minutes, the other at five. I've only seen the latter, so I'd love to know whether the first cut can compare. It isn't dubbed (unlike Voices of a Distant Star), but the Japanese acting more than makes up for that. ~Dagger~

Big news, guys. ADV Films has licensed the popular GONZO series Chrno Crusade (which is going to be re-titled Chrono Crusade for its American release). While this is hardly a surprise, as ADV already owns the rights to the Chrono Crusade manga, it gives us good reason to believe that the company will also try licensing Gunslinger Girl and Peace Maker Kurogane. Both the Gunslinger Girl and Peace Maker Kurogane graphic novels are being translated and distributed by ADV Manga; Gunslinger Girl is currently available in the States. I've watched several episodes of Chrono Crusade, but I haven't bothered to follow the series very closely. Quoted below are ADV's comments on the show.
HOUSTON, March 15, 2004-ADV Films, the #1 producer-distributor of anime in the U.S., today announced it has acquired exclusive home video and broadcast rights in North America for Chrono Crusade, an action-adventure anime that follows an unlikely duo as they attempt to destroy supernatural evil through exorcisms in 1920's New York City. Chrono Crusade recently made its Japanese television debut to much fanfare. Renowned anime production company Gonzo Digimation, of Full Metal Panic!, Hellsing and Kaleido Star fame, managed animation production for the title, ensuring a spectacular visual experience for viewers. ADV Manga already has the rights to the popular Chrono Crusade manga series by Daisuke Moriyama, which premiers with a May 25, 2004 street date. The series will be featured on the Anime Network(tm), the first cable channel in North America dedicated to anime. About Chrono Crusade New York City, the 1920s: With the Great War firmly behind it, America enjoys a period of great peace and prosperity. Of course, history has proven that such times rarely last for long. Lurking in the shadows is a sinister force born of hellfire and evil, with the power and desire to feast upon the nation's tranquility like a lion would its prey. Sister Rosette Christopher, a gun slinging nun, and her partner, Chrono, are exorcists with the Convent of Magdalene-NYC's first line of defense against the demon hordes that plague the city. Unfortunately, the city might be better off in the hands of the demons, as the adventurous pair tend to cause more rampant collateral than their hellspawn foes. "Since we already have the manga rights, this acquisition enables us to provide fans with even more exposure to the popular Chrono Crusade series through home video and television programming via The Anime Network," said John Ledford, president, CEO and co-founder of ADV Films. "This is such a fun series! The characters are a delight to follow and the story is full of comic adventures and unique character developments. The manga has already been generating a lot of interested among fans, and we anticipate that the DVD release will be equally - if not more - anticipated." Release Plans ADV Films has not yet announced specific release plans for the Chrono Crusade anime series, but Ledford expects the title to debut sometime later this year.
Suffice it to say that I'll be highly impressed if Chrono Crusade comes out before 2005. ~Dagger~

what was above Paradigm City? way did It all get erased during the fight with Big O and Big Duo? and exactly why did Angel become an new Megadues named Big Venus? but the most confusing part was at the very end of the episode it ended like the series started with so many cliffhangers[/spoiler'] could there be another Big O in the works, or just a ripe tomato gone bad? :(
I'd appreciate it greatly if you rephrased your first question. You're going to have to be more specific, because I can't tell exactly what's confusing you.
Are you referring to the sequence during Roger's final flashback (in which an armada of Big Duos flies over Paradigm City)?
Anyway, the entire point of Big O is that
everything comes full circle in the end. Angel doesn't destroy the world; she re-writes it, and so we return to episode 1. Yet there are subtle changes... most importantly, both Angel and Dorothy seem slightly different. Although the visuals consist mainly of footage from the first episode, the sound effects which accompany them have changed noticeably.
Big O's religious symbolism reaches a fever pitch in "The Show Must Go On."
Angel is, as her name suggests, a fallen angel. "A bird whose wings have been plucked will shed all its feathers and turn into the beast it was before it evolved into a bird. Just look at the scars on Angel's back. Does "B666" ring any bells? In the book of Revelations, the number 666 is described as being the mark of the beast. Angel is both a Lucifer figure and the metaphorical director. Big Venus could be thought of as her true form.... it endows her with the power to recreate reality. As its ending unfolds, Big O's frequent references to theatrical terminology finally start making sense. Earlier, they had some emotional relevance (i.e. Roger feeling that he can't control his destiny), but now it becomes clear that all the world is indeed a stage--or perhaps the words written in a constantly changing book... Metropolis, with its many authors.
Episode 26 has no cliffhangers. Presumably everything will
continue just as it did at the show's beginning, albeit with minor changes. Think of it as switching over to an alternate reality. Roger's last negotiation was successful; he convinced Angel to give Paradigm City a second chance.
I've heard that there might be a third season, but I personally wouldn't want one. Big O's ending is simply so brilliant that I can't imagine any additional episodes being able to equal or top it. ~Dagger~

This thread is beginning to go downhill (both in terms of coherency and general intelligence), so here are a few examples of what not to do. I deleted these replies shortly after quoting them; any future spam will meet a similar demise.
I have soo many choices for anime worlds I would live in, but my top three would have to be: .Hack//Sign, Outlaw Star, and Kenshin. Best ones for me at least :D
There's nothing wrong with your post quality. However, I'd really like you to put more thought and effort into your replies. For example, you should have added a sentence or two explaining why you'd like to live in those specific worlds, rather than simply listing them.
um sum anime were i can be the hero and get the girl......danm lots of options um sum gundam series might be cool flc.....no to many crazy ppl with guitars um second though ya flcl might be sorta kool if i was in flcl i wunder if i could here the background music...
Lios, although you seem to have justified your choices, your writing is so difficult to follow that I can't quite tell what to make of this post. Please refrain from using gratuitous mispellings; "sum" is only one letter shorter than "some," and the latter word takes perhaps a millisecond longer to type. Proper capitalization is a beautiful thing. Don't let it go neglected. Everyone else: this thread contains several other borderline replies, but I'm trying to give you guys the benefit of the doubt. If you suspect that your posts may scarcely meet our standards, be proactive and edit them accordingly. ~Dagger~

*grins* Sasuke, I wish I could sticky my PMK thread. But alas, such is not the case. Actually, I've been thinking that it might be a good idea to create a closed "directory" topic, one which would list links to all of the official series threads. Members could easily access their favorites, and it wouldn't take up very much space. If the other mods don't mind, I'd be glad to start putting something like that together. ~Dagger~
I prefer dubbed.
Welcome to OtakuBoards, BeccaDG. ^_^ Unfortunately, this type of post (short and not particularly thoughtful) qualifies as spam and will always be deleted. Welcome to OtakuBoards, Suzaku Forever. ^_^ We try to discourage favorites topics, as they rarely lead to quality discussions. But if you had chosen to explain why you like Tsutsui and Hikaru, I would probably have merged this with the pre-existing Hikaru no Go thread. It's our policy to maintain one official thread for each anime series, movie or OVA, so the next time you want to discuss any aspect of a specific show, please search the forum for older topics first. Thank you very much. ^_^ Thread closed. ~Dagger~

Art It's been long enough some WIP Signatures...
Dagger replied to Hittokiri Zero's topic in Creative Works
Yay!! *celebrates* The animation is perfectly paced.... and it looks very, very good. in fact, I'm having difficulty coming up with words to describe how impressed I am. So suffice it to say that this is just the kind of thing I was looking for. ^_^ I agree with Baron; you really have a talent for manipulating text. Anyway, I'm quite happy you're alive. ^_~ *scurries off to edit signature* ~Dagger~ -
Although I appreciate good animation, I care much more about consistent artwork. As Marimite is a fairly sedate show, I've neither expected nor seen any major drops in quality... even though its character designs are quite detailed and elaborate. There are a couple of sequences during which I feel that people's profiles (particularly their eyes) could have been better-drawn, but this is a minor gripe. Episode 6 made me fall in love with Rosa Gigantea all over again. I did not, however, like a few of the shots shown when she's dealing with Rosa Canina. Those dark blue gradients were irritating and rather distracting, so it was nice to see them disappear during the climactic moment. Marimite is very enjoyable if you know what to expect--a calm, character-driven drama with plenty of shoujo-ai tension. It took me a while to grow accustomed to its atmosphere, but I can definitely see why people watch this show. I'm glad you talked me into downloading the remaining episodes. ^_^ ~Dagger~
