1. Name: Dorigen Slew Alias: Willow Race: Caucasian (French) Species: Vampire Age: Approximately 40. Physically, she appears to be a young girl of 17. Gender: Female Alliance: OVD Weapon: Her main weapon is her mind. Her physical strength is fairly average (at least compared to others of her kind), but her telepathic and telekinetic powers, which she had even before becoming a vampire, allow her to defeat most enemies. Dorigen also wields poisoned shurikens with incredible speed and accuracy. Personality: She initially seems to be a nonthreatening, soft-spoken girl, but she believes in the vampires' right to dominate with a fervor that startles even her closest allies. Her personality is comparable to that of Soujirou (from Rurouni Kenshin) in the sense that she has essentially lost her ability to experience emotion, and even enjoys killing. Dorigen is oddly affectionate (as in touchy-feely) with her OVD comrades, particularly the women. Some of them find this endearing, others unsettling. Though she does not actively hate humans, she certainly looks down on them. Bio: Because of her psychic abilities, Dorigen had a thoroughly miserable childhood. Her parents, both devout Christians, thought that the young girl was possessed, and subjected her to numerous attempts at exorcism. When that failed, they placed her into a mental asylum, where powerful new drugs were successful in suppressing her innate powers, although they also rendered her a complete vegetable. At the age of 17, she finally managed to break free. After not having seen her mother and father for over ten years, she tracked them down, killed them, and promptly fled into the heart of the city. A wandering vampire happened to encounter the blood-covered Dorigen, and would have slain her immediately, had she not attacked him first. Realizing that the girl was heavily drugged and borderline insane, he erased her memory and changed her into one of her kind. Fortunately for her, she possessed the mental stamina and inner strength required to endure the painful transformation, and was later accepted into the OVD. As the youngest member of the OVD, Dorigen receives greater protection than many of the older and stronger vampires. She is a follower, not a leader, and is well liked for her obedience and gentle courtesy. As a side note, Dorigen is bilingual--she speaks both English and French fluently. ~Dagger~

Yes, although people who abuse this should definitely receive some form of warning or punishment. 8) Would you rather a decentralized forum system on OB (more forums, less activity per forum) or a centralized forum system (less forums, more activity per forum)? I honestly can't think of a single thing. 18) If you could remove one Category from OtakuBoards, what would it be? The individual anime forums (i.e. Dragonball). 3.
Originally posted by Dan L But anyway, the Bible says "do not sleep with a man as you would with a woman- this is abhorrent to God" Leviticus 18:22. Or 22:18. Either way there's an 18 and a 22, I just forget which is which. And the context of the verse is that it's a list of rules about sexual relations. You can't really get much of another meaning out of that now, can you..
Let me first mention that although we may disagree on a couple of points, you seem to be an amazingly reasonable person, and I must applaud you for that. Now, I'm not exactly a student of theology, and it's been a long while since I so much as glanced at a Bible. However, if I recall correctly, Leviticus (like much of the Old Testament) contains numerous prohibitions against all sorts of behavior, as well as an expansive set of rules governing people's food, clothing, and general comportment. Not all of these guidelines are still followed today, so why is the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality treated any differently than, say, its remarks about the inferiority of women? I'm just curious. ~Dagger~
  4. Ah, yes. To clarify--my character is evil through and through, but he'll happily betray a fellow bad guy if he feels that the result of his actions will be sufficiently entertaining. ~Dagger~
  5.
Originally posted by Bloodsin I was also making the statement that this new law also opens the flood gates for many other things. 20 years ago, people would've laughed at you for the idea of a gay marriage. This law shows that you don't know a **** about what they'll Ok next.
Twenty years ago, people would also have scorned the idea of an interracial marriage. I myself am the product of one such union, so I'm quite glad that the times have changed. Fifty years ago, women in the United States didn't have half of the rights that they have now. One century ago, child workers in factories were treated like animals. It's called progress, darling. American society is slowly but surely improving. Despite its flaws, our modern culture is far more diverse and tolerant than that of past eras. I don't know about you, but I certainly hope this pattern of change continues. Gay marriage is simply a part of the gradual trend towards greater acceptance. EDIT: In ancient Greece--a civilization renowned for its wisdom and learning--homosexuality was considered perfectly acceptable. However, I cannot recall a single society in all of history that was ever known to endorse bestiality. That fact alone ought to tell you something.
It's our morals and souls that set us aside form the beast of the world. We only have compassion because we're not threatened by any other race. During the Y2K scare, people were all to quick to run out and buy all the food they could, and a gun to shoot anyelse that wanted it. That's humanity. Don't tell me all of mankind is completely different from animals.
Those people who chose to stock up on food and ammunition composed a very small minority of the general population. There's a reason that the press poked so much fun at them. ~Dagger~
  6.
Originally posted by rttocs77 Second, I am getting increasingly stressed out. I am only a sophmore in highschool and I am already paranoid about what college I am going to get into and what grad school I will go to. My chemistry teacher, today, spent the entire class period saying how sad he is that everyone in my school (except for like 3 people) are too stressed out, or whatever. He thinks that we are worked too hard at school and gave an example of how and old student of his came back during break from college (Yale) and said how easy it was. He seemed disturbed by all the stress we are put through. Practically EVERYONE at school applies to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth etc... making it really hard for someone who doesn't have perfect grades or an extreme amount of extra curriculars to get in, even though in some other 'normal' school they would have very good chances. Oh, by the way, Dagger, what do you think about what I said concerning our school? Do you agree? Am I overblowing it? I also need to borrow your Canterbury Tales in able to rewrite that paper.
Eheh.... sorry, I didn't see this earlier. Good luck with your paper. Yes, the vast majority of people at our school are incredibly stressed out. Although I don't experience much strain, that's due in part to my personality; I'm very laid-back, and I rarely worry about grades or homework. I don't want to attend a school like Harvard--that could be part of the reason why I feel less academic pressure than my friends, many of whom aspire to attend the same Ivy League colleges that their parents went to. Our school is chock-full of stereotypical overachievers--kids who are members of numerous clubs, and excel at several different sports, in addition to maintaining high grades. This can have a pretty negative impact on everyone else's confidence. I'm not quite that ambitious, and I find it almost frightening to watch people struggle so hard simply to get into a "good" college. ~Dagger~
  7.
Originally posted by Bloodsin At any rate. Instincts are the only mental information stored in your DNA. If one claims that some one can be instinctively drawn to the same gender, it's only logical to assume one can be instinctively drawn to other species.
Is it also logical to assume that one can be instinctively drawn to species that no longer exist? To plants? To geographical features such as Mount Kilimanjaro? To a specific variety of fungi, or perhaps one's right foot? I'm not sure that I understand exactly how your "logic" operates. If you don't want to explain it here, then please feel free to PM me. ~Dagger~
  8.
Originally posted by InuyashaDeamon I hate PETA there set up a billboard in our town saying to drink beer rather then milk. truely i think it a bunch of bull what they say. Im was in FFA and we watch a video about butchering plants and there are usally human as can be.
I'm sorry, but that comparison simply doesn't pan out. For one thing, plants can't move, and while I can state with some degree of certainty that animals are capable of feeling pain, who knows whether the same thing may be said of plants? And few people experience such extreme guilt over killing plants that they decide to stop eating them altogether. I'm not a vegetarian and most likely never will be. I love meat, and though I don't necessarily condone the sometimes brutal methods by which people procure it, that's never going to stop me from enjoying a nice, juicy hamburger or steak. I frankly think it's silly to worry about animals when people in other parts of the world are suffering so greatly. ~Dagger~
  9.
Originally posted by Mimmi I figured that since they were making "changes" to the movie, they might as well have kept Boromir. His death was so "perfect", weakness, betrayal, atonement, nighty-night, but imagine what he could've done. Where he could've gone with himself and his land/his people, had he miraculously lived.
It's a nice thought, but
had Peter Jackson decided to keep Boromir alive, I'm sure that he would have been lynched by a rampaging mob of angry purists. Anyway, Boromir's death was far from pointless--it served to redeem his weakness, and showed how Aragorn would be forced to grapple with himself before going on to achieve greatness. In The Two Towers and Return of the King, Faramir and Aragorn assume the roles which a living Boromir might have ended up playing.
~Dagger~
  10. Just my kind of RPG. ^__^ Name: Nuada Bourne Race: Vampire. Age: Unknown. Side: His own. Abilities: The usual--vampiric regeneration, extraordinary reflexes, resistance to poison and telepathy. Due to his considerable age and strength, Nuada is capable of tolerating limited amounts of sunlight. Description: Long, dark hair; crimson eyes. I'll add an attachment later. Brief Biography: It is suspected that Nuada knew Vanndid personally, although he refuses to verify any rumors regarding just how long he's been wandering this earth. However, he's made it quite clear that he doesn't give a rat's ass about whether peace is ultimately achieved or not. Nuada fights solely for his own gain. Cruel, charismatic, and far too powerful for his own good, Nuada makes the perfect villain. He forms alliances just as easily as he breaks them. To put it plainly, watch out for this guy. Personality: Nuada feels absolutely no guilt about surviving by drinking the blood of others. If anything, he enjoys it. He tends to look down on other vampires--and with reason--since they're usually weaker-willed than he. His soft spot for bad puns is one of the few human qualities which has succeeded in staying with him over the course of his long life. Weapons: His fangs, of course. Nuada habitually carries around a katana, and wields it rather impressively when the occasion calls for it, but he usually prefers to do things with his bare hands. ***** Just tell me if anything needs to be changed. ~Dagger~
  11. Yuki Eiri, from Gravitation. Now, don't get me wrong--I love the guy--but in real life he'd be beyond insufferable. I wouldn't wish his psychological issues on my worst enemy. Yuki clearly needs someone extraordinary to
help him forget about his past,
and Shindou Shuuichi fits that description quite nicely. I'm sure that I'd be incapable of dealing with Yuki's cruelty and frequent mood swings. ~Dagger~
  12.
Originally posted by Bloodsin I was following everyone's logic. "Two things love eachother, It's a free country, let them do it!" There's nothing in your DNA that makes you gay, it's a life style. So is Beastiality. You can't dismiss someone saying they're prejudice to gays while you're prejudice to Beastiality.
How can you say that "there's nothing in your DNA that makes you gay"? I doubt that you're a scientist, or that you've done significant research on this particular topic. I'm quite curious as to what knowledge allows you to state so confidently that homosexuality is a matter of choice. Please, enlighten me. I'm speaking from personal experience when I tell you that no one decides to suddenly become gay. Why would anyone want to be tormented at school? Why would anyone choose to lead a "lifestyle" that subjects him to the disappointment and disapproval of his closest friends and family? Being gay, lesbian, or bisexual can be incredibly lonely and painful. Are you willing to stand behind your assertion that people choose their sexual orientations? If so, then why don't gays and lesbians simply turn straight when they're forced to face homophobia? ~Dagger~
  13.
Originally posted by BabyGirl Maybe you're just jealous because they're prettier than you, who knows. [Yeah, that's harsh, but these discussions are so dumb. Get over your outcast selves.]
Ahahaha. BabyGirl, may I worship you? That definitely needed to be said, and you phrased it beautifully. ^_~ I attend a fairly exclusive private school, and I suppose that I might be classified as a prep. Do I really care what people call me? No. In the grand scheme of things, does it matter what you're labeled as during the span of your teenage years? Absolutely not. ~Dagger~
  14. Heresy, Elrick, heresy! ^_~ Yeah, I'm a big Tenchi/Ryoko fan, in case you hadn't already guessed. Not because he's the most fantastic fictional character ever created, but because she likes him so much. I personally can't claim to understand why everyone from Mihoshi to Ayeka is completely captivated by that "poor, unsuspecting bloke." I really dislike Ayeka's prudishness, and although her ladylike airs *might* suit Tenchi better than Ryoko's constant come-ons, I doubt that he would be able to tolerate her rabid jealousy and squeaky voice for very long. She's whiny, annoying, and can't take care of herself. In contrast, Tenchi's personality positively sparkles. ~Dagger~
  15. Er... yeah. Exactly what the title of the thread implies. Criticism is very much appreciated. ^__^ The Turning One day, I stopped caring where he was, whether the world that he occupied could be seen from where I stood, alone and malcontent. Well, malcontent no longer-- I found something bright outside of him, beyond what I thought was good, something which sulked within myself until new distance broke it free. Fresh air, solitude, words scribbled hastily and tucked into my pocket. Creased and folded, that paper would stay with me for a while. Not quite a revelation. Just the knowledge that I didn't need him, that perfection lay hiding in my hands-- it's a simple sort of peace. I'll tell him when the time is right. When winter wheels into rebirth, when the stars cycle through to spring. Someday, when I have the strength to shed those last shackles and stand alone. ~Dagger~
  16. The language used to depict
Eowyn and Faramir's
relationship is more personal and generally more intimate than that found in situations relating to Aragorn and Arwen. Most readers would probably have an easier time relating to them than to the latter couple.
Eowyn and Faramir
simply seem more human--which they are. Though strong and brave, they're ultimately ordinary people, whereas Arwen is an elf and Aragorn a hero of epic proportions. Arwen and Aragorn's relationship, too, is epic in nature, and written using grand language which might be better suited to describing battle scenes and such. I really enjoyed reading the portion of their story which was relegated to RotK's appendices--but I agree, within the book there isn't much beyond elaborate descriptions of Arwen's beauty, and a few subtle hints regarding Aragorn's feelings. Perhaps I just like the idea of their love. ~Dagger~
  17. One of my friends is a huge fan of the play, and she's practically been counting down the hours until Sunday night. Her excitement is rather contagious, so although I never got around to reading Angels in America, I'll definitely try to watch the HBO production. A recent Washington Post review stated that it's one of the best television movies/mini-series ever made, and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing it. EDIT: Ah.... "Azazel" sounded familiar, but I wasn't sure where I'd seen the name before. Thanks for clearing that up. ^_^ ~Dagger~
  18.
Originally posted by Queen Asuka Obviously you haven't read the novels.
Aragorn is still in love with Arwen, and she doesn't leave him. She stays so that they two of them can be together. Eowyn tells Aragorn that she's in love with him, but she turns him down. While in Gondor, she falls in love with the injured Faramir and the two of them get married. And then we all know about Aragorn and Arwen, and if we don't, I'll just leave it at that.
So see, it's so much nicer to actually have read the novels and know what is going to happen instead of having all these false ideas.
Heh, yes. Very well put. Although the trilogy isn't exactly a love story, I really enjoyed what little romance it contained. I thought that Tolkien's portrayal of the relationships between
Aragorn and Arwen, Aragorn and Eowyn, and Faramir and Eowyn
was exceptionally well written. ~Dagger~
  19. Last Exile may have the most beautiful soundtrack of any show I've ever seen. Its music is reminiscient of .hack//SIGN in the sense that most of LE's songs combine a rich, almost Gregorian sound with catchy techno beats. This effectively captures the essence of the show (which, despite its medieval atmosphere, features some usually advanced technology). ~Dagger~

    Akira

I strongly doubt that they will. If I recall correctly, Akira did rather poorly during its original American release (much like Princess Mononoke). Pioneer wouldn't want to risk losing money again. ~Dagger~
  21. Ah. I thought that her remark "guys can do everything and girls can't" was made in reference to action-oriented shows. Then again, I could have been jumping to conclusions. *shrugs* EDIT: I didn't mean to pick on your post, Katana. I've always seen anime as being a fairly egalitarian form of entertainment, and I wanted you to be aware that there are shows in which the girls aren't just damsels in distress, just in case you were ever interested in watching any of those series. ~Dagger~
  22.
Originally posted by Verykawaiineko ive never seen YYH but people keep on telling me how good it is..then again they also say taht DBZ had a plot..so >.>
Yu Yu Hakusho may belong to the same genre as DBZ, but it's completely different. I'll be honest: YYH's animation isn't fantastic, and the series is a bit too long for my tastes. But if you're looking for a good combination of tournament-style fighting, irreverent humor, memorable characters, and a hint or two of romance, I promise that you won't find anything better. For me, the characters and drama are what make Yu Yu Hakusho so enjoyable to watch. And if nothing else, I can guarantee that you'll love Kurama. ^_~ ~Dagger~
  23. I may have gone a bit overboard there. ^_^;; In the past, CN has had some fairly decent shows, including Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Tenchi Muyo (in addition to those you already mentioned). All I meant to say was that so far, it's only aired one show which could truly be considered great.... and that, of course, would be Cowboy Bebop. I'm not actually a big fan of the series, but I'll readily admit that it's good. By the way, has anyone noticed that a number of shows have male leads who are intentionally portrayed as weak and/or dorky? There's FLCL, which DBD already mentioned.... but let's not forget Neon Genesis Evangelion, Love Hina, and Chobits. It's almost as though nerds are the anti-heroes of the new millenium. ~Dagger~
  24. If it truly bothers you that much, then write CN a coherent, persuasive letter explaining why you feel that Toonami and SVES ought to lighten up on the censors. ~Dagger~
  25. In my parents' time, you would never have been able to walk into Borders and immediately locate the next volume of "Demon Diary" or "RahXephon." Nowadays, it's possible to find numerous J-rock sites in Russian and even Portuguese. On anime-centric message boards such as OB, people from all over the world discuss various aspects of Japanese culture. The growing popularity of anime and manga indicates just how much globalization has spread over the past few years. In other words, the times are a-changin'. ^_~ ~Dagger~
