I probably won't get my copy until at least 1 am EST. *shakes fist* I'm planning to hunker down on the couch with a couple of bottled Frappuccinos and assorted snack food. No Internet for me between when I get home from work and when I finish the book (although by then I'll be on an eight-hour trip to North Carolina, so it's kind of a moot point). ~Dagger~

I don't have nightmares. Weird dreams, violent dreams, stuff that should be horribly scary--sure, I get all of that. But I can't remember ever being terrified or disturbed by what happened in a dream, either while dreaming or after waking up. My dream-self/character/whatever tends not to have emotions; I feel like there are tasks I have to fulfill, some more urgent than others, but that's it. I don't have a sense of smell, taste or touch in my dreams. Hearing plays a limited role. The plots are complicated and often involve people I haven't seen or thought about in ages. It pisses me off when I wake up without being able to see the ending, haha. ~Dagger~

5cm Per Second (Byousoku 5cm) is the third major project from [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makoto_Shinkai][u]Makoto Shinkai[/u][/url], who is frequently compared to Miyazaki. I wouldn't read too much into that, because Shinkai is still a rising director, and his work is very different--it's just amazing that someone would receive such high compliments with such frequency so early in his career. Shinkai's past films are Voices of a Distant Star, a half-hour OVA, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days (Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho). Both of them have been released by ADV, who more recently packaged them together in a "Shinkai collection" thinpak. Voices of a Distant Star comes with She and Her Cat, a five-minute black-and-white short. 5cm is a one-hour movie made up of three connected vignettes. Unlike Voices or Place Promised, it doesn't have sci-fi themes. The first story is about Akari and Takaki, middle-schoolers who struggle to stay close as their families move farther and farther apart. The second story jumps ahead in time to high school and takes place from the perspective of a younger girl who admires Takaki. In the third story, they're adults. It has the characteristics of Shinkai's other work: hyper-real, luminescent backgrounds that make everyday life seem unbearably beautiful and sad; humbly drawn characters; soft, pained voices; the themes of distance, young love, longing & the irreparable passage of time. In 5cm, though, he all but refines his style to perfection. The very end is wordless, set to the film's theme song, and utterly brilliant. He conveys more emotion there than most anime can get across in 50+ episodes. Anyway, ADV has licensed 5cm and plans to give it a limited theatrical release (as well as a DVD release this December). I'm going to do whatever it takes to watch it in theaters--anything by Shinkai deserves to be seen on as big a screen as possible. For that very reason, I'm reluctant to link to the trailer--a little YouTube window could never do his stuff justice--but if it gets anyone interested, that's good enough for me. Quick thoughts on episodes 15 & 16: - Love the new ending song (although the animation is repetitive, to say the least). - There have been some unexpected developments, namely [spoiler]Hermione going psycho and meeting Juliet again[/spoiler] and [spoiler]Francisco pushing Curio to take Juliet's mind off of Romeo.[/spoiler] (The shot of [spoiler]the gaping hole in the mine leading down to the sky[/spoiler] was also a doozy.) Still, it feels like the story has been swimming in place. Hopefully [spoiler]Tybalt's return[/spoiler] will remedy that. - Something is going to happen soon with [spoiler]Mercutio and/or his dad... I can feel it...[/spoiler] - We meet a girl named Regan. At this point they're obviously just pulling random names out of their Shakespearean hat. - Francisco and Curio are totally Fai and Kurogane (from Tsubasa). - There's some hardcore budget-saving going on, especially in 16. ~Dagger~

How much can they really add from the manga, though? There's the final chapter, I guess, and maybe some extra scenes from the second arc. I wouldn't mind a total recap if they re-animated scenes from the middle. With the American DVD release not too far off, I've been thinking to myself that what I really want is some kind of "best of" collection with episodes like 1, 7, 25, 29, etc. If the special ends up being the equivalent of this--albeit woven together more smoothly--that would be awesome.[/SIZE] ~Dagger~

I really like this game so far, but my God, the load times are just horrendous. It's also a shame that the skits aren't voiced in the English version. If they weren't going to dub them, I wish they could have found a way to let you manually skip to the next line. ~Dagger~

As much as I like the show visually (when Shinbo doesn't lapse into just mailing it in, that is), the characters don't do it for me. Well, except for the gloriously sexy and megane'd Rei, but she's one out of how many? Exactly. The one running joke from PPD that kills me is [spoiler]the Kami-sama cat.[/spoiler] Maybe because makes the least sense out of anything in there. I don't find AzuDai to be wildly thrilling or amusing in comparison, but it does have way more warmth & heart. ~Dagger~

Episode 2: Way funnier. The gags intertwine and build on each other fantastically well from beginning to end. I'd describe my favorite parts, but you really have to see it for yourself. Suffice it to say that [spoiler]Itoshiki unwittingly winning the hearts of three neurotic students (and the ensuing chain of stalkers!)[/spoiler] had me rolling. You guys might have seen hikikomori & stalker characters in other anime, but never like this. By the way, keep an eye out for Konata... ~Dagger~

Raw kiwis, cherries, peaches (except for the Japanese kind), nectarines, plums that aren't totally mushy and some kinds of apples (not the Honey Crisp variety) leave me with this weird scratchy aftertaste. I don't think it's an allergy or anything, but it's rather unpleasant, so I'll only eat them canned or cooked. That said, I love fruit, from bananas with peanut butter to hard or squishy persimmons. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with mangoes. Without any accompaniment, a ripe mango is so much more intense and delicious than any melon. Regular pears are okay, but Asian pears rock my palate. Also, clementines >>>>> every other kind of citrus. ~Dagger~

Just saw it for myself, and I'd say "Lookin' good" if Utada's rendition of Fly Me to the Moon wasn't so distractingly awful. They really should've 1) had her do a super-fast dance-beat version, which seems to be what she's best at, or 2) gotten someone like Chiaki Ishikawa or Lena Park to sing it. ~Dagger~

I think of something else* when I see the word 'epic'--a huge timespan or a cast of thousands, plot twists upon plot twists, etc. If it's not cheating to mention a series, I'd say Xenosaga, whose story is much too big to be contained effectively by just three games. No one knows what it's supposed to be about, although speculation is running rampant (Lovecraft? Voltron? A remake of The Host?). Some say that the whole film will be done handheld-style; some say it won't. Me, I'm pulling for some kind of Lovecraft adaptation. That would be so cool that my little fangirl heart just might explode. ~Dagger~

The movie designs seem to stick pretty close to the original art, thankfully (it's just too bad that the human characters couldn't be duplicated as nicely). I'm a tad skeptical of Mallory's actress, but it's not like the promo showed that much of her. We'll see. Currently slated for February 2008. Going by the trailer, it appears to cover all five books. ~Dagger~
