All of this indicates an opposite solution, namely that the meaning of a sentence is something independent from word meaning. Words, in fact, have no meaning on their own.
Words have no fixed meaning on their own. The same goes for sentences, i.e., the meaning of a sentence is something independent from the meaning of the paragraph or chapter or novel it's found in. It seems like most of the problems you have defining a sentence arise because you keep circling around the idea of a pure, context-free sentence. But I'd say that the leap from sentences to paragraphs is at least as big as the leap from words to sentences. (And I don't want to even think about having to define what constitutes a pure, context-free word.) Fragments capped off with periods that have no logical (or grammatical) meaning by themselves can make perfect sense as part of a longer work of prose. Are they disqualified as sentences because they can't stand on their own? ~Dagger~

The SE comes with two DVDs. One has the second set of four chronological episodes, and one has the first set of five broadcast episodes (sub-only). ~Dagger~

Yes!! That's the one. You're brilliant. (And fast!) Many a moon ago, I saw an image or two comparing that to a real game of the same type. I don't think they were exactly the same... very close, though. ~Dagger~

Broadcast, right? :animeswea They play Othello quite often in the first two discs (hence it coming to mind first)... but that's chronological order. My head hurts. Does anyone know when they play the board game that has cards in it? ~Dagger~

I like the beach. Not the nasty crowded ones--give me a quiet beach without too many broken shells to cut up your feet. Being in the sand & water is just part of it; half the fun is being inside when one of those spectacular summer thunderstorms comes along. Playing video games in a room from which you can hear the sound of the waves. Waking up with that smell in your nose. Going walking for crabs when it gets dark. Playing Cranium and Apples to Apples and Spades. Eating Krispy Kremes and cooking hush puppies. Watching the Weather Channel when there's nothing else to do. Playing miniature golf at one of those cheesy courses. Driving to a small-time theater to watch a movie you'd never have bothered with at home. I'll be at the beach for a week starting on the 21st. Very much looking forward to it. ~Dagger~

Are you talking about the one with the black and white pieces? That's Othello. They also play something much more obscure involving cards (if I remember rightly) that's either based on a Japanese board game or an amalgamation of several of them. By the way, I'm going to merge this with the main Haruhi thread in a sec or two. :) ~Dagger~

The bag I've had for at least the past year and a half broke recently. I've been making do with a smaller one, but it's frustrating. When I have a normal-sized bag: - A regular (8.5 x 11?) sized notebook - A book/manga or two to read - Pens, pencils, an eraser - Room, work access & car keys - My Metro card - A bag-within-the-bag for my wallet, loose change, receipts - A comb, hair ties, chapstick - If it's spring, tissue packets - My phone... mainly so I know what time it is - CD player & headphones - Small thumb drives (256 mb and 512 mb) - If I'm at school, books for class My wallet is pretty boring. Cash, cards, the usual. The most important thing in my purse as a whole are my car keys--because they have my library card attached. :catgirl: ~Dagger~

Director: Akiyuki Shinbo [Negima!?, Moon Phase, Pani Poni Dash] Studio: Shaft [all of the above] Watch the super stylish ED Read an article about the manga While trying to hang himself, the world's most negative man meets the world's most positive girl. Oh, and it turns out that he's her new teacher. What follows is twenty minutes of hilarity. This show hits the sweet spot. Shinbo likes playing weird visual tricks on the viewer, and as interesting as his anime are to look at, this can be a problem when he's adapting a manga story. Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, however, seems to be suited for that kind of treatment. The source material & the director's own zaniness come together perfectly. Recommended even if you're a comedy curmudgeon like me. The main character's name looks like the kanji for zetsubou--despair--when you read it sideways. Not a good sign for someone who's already suicidal. ~Dagger~

A rather disappointing first episode, especially coming from Xebec M2 (which is supposed to be the better Xebec team). Not for me, I guess. The shinigami eyes aren't really a DN rip-off. The same concept, with different twists, appears in other stories like Tsukihime. ~Dagger~

Licensed by FUNimation; will be coming out in 2008. I really hope they manage to get this on Adult Swim. ---------------------------------- *sings* Guess who's back, back again... Yep... episode 13 marks the return of
Gai & the pink-haired chick. That said, I very much doubt this arc is going to be comedic.
Also, episode 12 was quite a good watch, thanks to the awesome acting chops of Hei's seiyuu. (I just looked him up on ANN, and apparently he played Tenma in Monster. No wonder!) Will add more to this post when I finish the arc. ETA: HAHAHA!! Great
Death Note
reference. Also... am I a total idiot for not having realized that
Yin is blind
until just now? Anyway, I'm about to watch episode 14. Hilarious meta-jokes aside, 13 had an atmosphere of impending doom (not to mention gorgeous piano music). Hm. ETA after episode 14: Well, that was rather heartbreaking. Best episode so far. By a lot. Looks like episode 15 will return to
the months!
The price has dropped by now. If you enjoyed it that much, you should get it. :) I like a lot of the small details of the battle system... for instance, attacking from behind makes a difference in how much damage you deal out, but not so much so that you're forced to manuver around in back every time. I love the fact that killing the enemy leader ends battles instantly. I still find it delightful that you can make sorcerers so awesome in this game--it's fun to pick off enemies with a single spell. ~Dagger~

I must be getting toward the end now (I sure hope I am!), but my impressions are still mixed. Almost violently so, haha. Now that the story is lurching its way toward awesomeness, the gameplay has started to suffer. The einherjar are optional characters that you acquire by finding old weapons lying around in dungeons. When you get them to a certain level, you can release them, and in return they give you items to level up your characters' strength, magic, experience, whatever. After they're freed, they go stand around in towns etc. and may give you further rewards if you talk to them. Leveling them up is very much worthwhile. It's also boring. And if you're going to level them up (I found myself usually juggling two or three at a time), that makes it tough to keep your regular characters caught up, with just a four person party. There's a way to allocate some experience to your reserve characters, but that doesn't become an option until at least halfway through. So if you want to take advantage of the einherjar's gifts and actually move through the game at the same time, you can only focus on two or three (out of six total) of the regular characters at once. This wasn't problematic for me until the story started moving, and my regular characters started dropping like flies. First I lost two that I hadn't used at all since recruiting them. Fine, I thought. Then I lost a character that I had gone out of my way to make super powerful, which was a bit more bothersome. Then that character came back--for just one boss fight--and now seems likely to stay unavailable for the rest of the game. So I'm stuck with two einherjar who are rather pathetic compared to the characters I used the past einherjars' gifts on... and I can't even form a full party, because out of the original six playable characters, four are gone, one is temporarily out of commission, and one is still with me. It's downright obnoxious. I'd mind much less if the steady flow of einherjar hadn't suddenly run dry. I just hope I start finding more again soon. The battle system uses the one button per character thing, but I've also seen people say that it's pretty different from the original. ~Dagger~

Episode 14 brings in a character named Petruchio. At first I figured it was a Taming of the Shrew reference, but then Wikipedia told me that there's an extremely minor character called Petruchio in Romeo & Juliet. So maybe the anime writers read the play after all--not that his role here could possibly have anything to do with the original. :animesmil
Romeo definitely has a thing for saving people dramatically....
It seemed like this episode was geared toward making him realize that his dad isn't the real problem--the entire system is at fault. And whereas he could theoretically fix the Neo Verona leadership issues by leading a coup or something, changing the structure of a whole society is nothing to sneeze at. Also, no licensing announcement makes me sad, but I'll live. ~Dagger~
I'll tell you one thing I sometimes dislike about OB though: we are a very introspective community. We constantly have threads about our experiences here and our history. That stuff is all great for Otakupedia...
So true. Otakupedia etc.: Good. Needless drama: Bad. I'd go into more detail, but talking about navel-gazing has an insidious way of contributing to the overall level of navel-gazing itself. Sure, the Internet is Serious Business; OB doesn't have to be. :) ~Dagger~

Danchou armband for the win! Yes, I just got volume 2 in the mail. (Recap: The extras are the aforementioned armband, the first broadcast order disc, the Bouken Desho Desho CD, a pointy-fingered Haruhi iron-on and a pencil board with two very bouncy swimsuit pictures.) The box is flimsy, as expected, but nevertheless quite shiny. Because of the way it's constructed, it holds together well and would actually fit in with regular artboxes on a shelf. Plus, it's the only place that SE buyers will see the regular edition cover art. Worth hanging onto. Hm... perhaps I should celebrate the Fourth with a little Haruhi? ~Dagger~
