Maybe, either that or we're subconsciously asking all their questions so they don't have to post. Didn't Dagger mentioned she usually spies on these threads but never posts ?
Dammit, you caught me! :animesmil But yeah, I don't actually read the series, so I really don't have anything interesting to say about it... ~Dagger~

My redhead is prettier than both your redheads. :catgirl: (Let me just mention that I've already gotten sniped, like, three times when I was about to reply to this thread. *shakes fist at Ikillion, Aceburner and Zen* :p) ~Dagger~

Gender-swapped SOS-dan beats Haruhi because the fandom has embraced this concept to the point that some people are actually rewriting the Haruhi novels with Haruhiko and Kyonko. :animeswea ~Dagger~

I still recall with terror the dark days when my little sister first started to learn the violin. That said, while there was definitely a lot of suffering involved in trying to do homework or relax or whatever while her violin's screeching echoed from corner to corner of the house, it's quite pleasant to listen to (albeit just as difficult to escape) now that she's good at it. The greatest benefit, though, is that it made me become much better at tuning out distractions while working. My roommate decided to teach herself the guitar this year, and she played it a lot, but it never bothered me (nor did my close friend's near-constant penny-whistle playing). ~Dagger~

Yeah,
Franz
in Gankutsuou is the last anime death I can remember that actually had me bawling. To be honest, my reaction to deaths is more frequently "Woo-hoo! Yeah!!"... not necessarily because I don't like the character(s) involved or anything, but because there's always something a little satisfying about seeing the scenario writers prove their guts by offing a fan favorite. There are series, though, where you get too caught up in the story to think about the calculations involved, and for me, Gankutsuou was one of them. ~Dagger~
...SUPPORT THE REVOLUTION!!! (Pizza Hut does)
Heh, someone had to bring that up... I didn't find this out until recently, but apparently Maria-sama ga Miteru was also involved with some kind of Pizza Hut-related promotion. Which is mind-boggling in an entirely different way. ~Dagger~

Ooh! Ooh! Here's my favorite pizza. For bread, get something pita-sized... a whole-wheat naan-type thing is ideal. Then, in order: Pesto sauce Tomato slices Chicken Feta cheese Pepperoni Deliciousness. You gotta throw it together yourself, though. :catgirl: ~Dagger~

Not to drag the issue out (I'm sorry!! :animeswea), but I'm not sure that I get the structural difference between manga and comics (or between comics and graphic novels) that you guys are hinting at. Allamorph, you said that manga is more episodic, but manga is published in a variety of ways in Japan, including titles that go straight to the bookshelf without being serialized in a magazine first. I guess we could distinguish between graphic novels and comics/manga (in either Japan or the US) based on how they were originally distributed, but that seems needlessly complicated. Matt, you suggested that comics are meant to be read with some time difference... but does the time gap really affect things that much? It alters the reading experience somewhat, of course, but to me it's comparable to TV shows. You can watch them as each new episode airs, or you can buy the full DVD set and watch a whole season at once, but however much or little it was shaped by its episodic format, it's still a complete work. You could say that, well, TV shows are still clearly distinguishable from movie trilogies or TV mini-series, but I don't see where a similar distinction comes in with respect to comics and graphic novels... at least not if we include non-American works in the mix. I guess part of me would rather have the term "graphic novel" either be used for everything (manga, comics, whatever, as long as it's in collected form) or nothing. When people use it selectively, I can't help but think about how it's been appropriated by the literary establishment to legitimize a very small group of comics (e.g. Maus and Persopolis). ~Dagger~

I skim headlines online, but unless it's something really big, I prefer to read the news in print. The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal are my daily fare. I like to curl up with Newsweek and Time on the weekends (although, like Lunox implied, you can't always take them too seriously). ~Dagger~

Anime Anime Out of Context (image heavy)
Dagger replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in Otaku Central
The second one's from Shugo Chara. I'm surprised we haven't seen more out-of-context Shugo Chara, actually... or maybe it's because everything you could twist around from that show is already pretty twisty in context. :animeswea ~Dagger~ -
Finally saw it today. I liked it well enough; not as much as the first or third in the series, but it certainly wasn't an insult to the franchise or anything. Anyway, Cate Blanchett was smoking hot... she and Karen Allen would've made the film for me even if the rest of it wasn't enjoyable. I just hope they don't try to pass the lead role to Shia LaBeouf in the future. He's good sidekick material, but no one could fill Harrison Ford's shoes. Anyway, I thought this made for a great end, and hopefully they intended it that way. ~Dagger~

Well, tonight's the night. :catgirl: I look forward to cooking up a delicious dinner and enjoying the season finale, whose last five minutes will hopefully not leave me screaming at the TV. Not too loudly, anyway. ~Dagger~
Your thoughts?
Congratulations to California, I suppose. My suitemate (San Francisco native) was delighted to hear about this. :) Seems like the kind of thing that could end up in front of the federal Supreme Court, though, and I'm not sure if I want to see how the current court will address gay marriage... well, no point in worrying about that right now. ~Dagger~

So, I don't think this is really what any of you were getting at, but people could definitely interpret it that way... and something rubs me the wrong way about the suggestion that complexity in literature is inherently superior to simplicity, or that adult books are inherently superior to children's books, or that literature with a narrow audience is inherently superior to popular work. Currently reading Possession by A.S. Byatt, on the recommendation of my roommate. No opinion on it so far, although I'm afraid all of the characters' scholarly activity keeps reminding me that I have my own papers to write. :animeswea ~Dagger~

One look at
creepily knowing Claire
was all it took for me to fall in love. I could watch an entire episode of
her and creepily knowing ghost!Charlie smiling their crooked little smirks.
So it looks like yes,
Alpert is definitely a) immortal/unaging or b) one of those omnipresent Island manifestations. But where does the Oceanic dude come in? Is Oceanic affiliated with Widmore or Ben/the Islanders or neither? Is Oceanic dude actually with Alpert's people rather than Oceanic proper? (That was the impression I started to get from this episode.) For that matter, does he have a name yet?
Cracked up over
oddcouple!Ben and Hurley.
I'll take WTF-ery over icky romance any day. I winced a little at the beginning when I saw that it was a Locke episode, but it's good to know that there's more to him now that
the daddy issues have been taken care of. (GJ, Sawyer.)
There were a lot of weird-*** moments this time around... overall, though, I think
Locke's childhood drawing of Smokey
takes the cake. And what was with the
"selection of the next Dalai Lama"-type trial Alpert put him through?

The Captain sure went without much fanfare.
Oh well. ~Dagger~

Congratulations! As everyone before me has rightfully said, she's beautiful. Motherhood is going to be a real adventure--treasure every moment of it. :catgirl: ~Dagger~

Well, man, I was all excited about seeing this because I thought it'd be epically bad, but now I'm seriously getting excited about watching it (hopefully sometime this week). Will be interesting to see how my somewhat reluctant friends react... ~Dagger~

Couldn't be the worst episode ever IMO because it had a lot more forward movement than, say, the episode about Jack's tattoos or
Kate's past marriage.
Now, the most painful to watch? That's another story... :animeswea ~Dagger~

Haha, there was a lot of booing and general mockery going on in the room I was watching it in, too.
On the plus side, at least they got the Jack/Kate stuff all packed into one episode instead of stretching it out forever. My eyes just about rolled out of my head when Kate's unexplained romping turned out to be connected to Sawyer (Cassidy & kid, I'm assuming). He already got dragged through the love triangle mud pretty thoroughly last season--leave the poor guy out of it this time around.
Made me nostalgic to see
Jack's dad back in action.
~Dagger~

I haven't been watching Kanokon, but I'm pretty sure this is exactly what it looks like. Perhaps someone more informed could confirm for me? :p ~Dagger~ -
I go to bed between 1 and 3:30 or so most nights, and wake up between 8 and 9. About once or twice a week, I'll turn in a bit earlier (11 or 12) or sleep a bit later. Seems to be enough to keep me feeling well-rested and balanced. It's nice being young. :animesmil ~Dagger~

If they
axe Penny and leave Kate and Jack intact, I'm gonna have to cut a *****.
(Speaking of which:
Kate sliding off her tank top and making eyes at Jack
= arguably one of the worst ways to open an episode.) Right now, though, I'm a lot more worried about
Sawyer and Claire. Major death flags going off for one or the other (but probably not both).
~Dagger~
