1. Show me a major company that isn't "promoting hardcore" at tons of cons. Navarre is in hot water of some variety, but it's hardly Enron-level. The industry overall is in trouble, but not that much trouble. Even though there's a grain of truth in most of what you've said, I can't help thinking your interpretation is insanely fatalistic. Anyway--yes, it is illegal. There's no guarantee that someone will sue your butt off for it or whatever, but it's still illegal. C'mon... if we're going to venture into supposedly gray legal areas, isn't this what fansubs were sort of intended for? Isn't it preferable to get the darn thing for free--assuming you have no other way of acquiring it--than to give money to people who have made it their business to blatantly exploit the work of the original creators? ~Dagger~
 2.
What is the WORST anime you've seen? Mine, is Tokyo Mew Mew. There is no real seriousness, sadness, or violence.
I object. If violence, sadness and seriousness are your sole criteria for what makes a show good, then it makes no sense for you to bother negatively judging an anime which lacks said qualities. ~Dagger~
 3. This is a very interesting and useful site. I really recommend using it. :catgirl: All jokes aside, these sorts of questions don't really make the best fodder for discussion. You would probably be better off sticking a notice like this in your signature. Also, we have a separate forum (located here) for discussing manga; I know it's easy to get mixed up when there's also an anime based on the series you're thinking of, but we try to keep manga-centric topics out of the Anime Lounge. If you have any questions about our policies, feel free to private message me or one of the other staff members. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 4. Mm... this is more appropriate for the anime forum, so I'm going to move it. That said, any reports of ADV going bankrupt are pure hyperbole, as far as I'm concerned. Every single North American anime licensee has felt the effects of the current market slump; ADV went a little more crazy than the others in terms of licensing so-so shows right and left, but I'm still sure they'll be fine. Also, FYI, bootlegs are never legal. That's why they're called, um, bootlegs. Just because (to give a random example) ADV's old Sailor Moon collections are long since out of print doesn't give anyone the right to run around dropping money on illegal copies of those seasons. I have no idea why the Saiyuki Double Barrel collections strike you or whoever you've spoken with as a desperate grab for cash, haha. If that were the case, we'd really be in trouble, because FUNimation is putting out similar collections for Tenchi Muyo! GXP and Kiddy Grade, while Bandai is taking the same approach to re-releasing s-CRY-ed. I have somewhat mixed feelings about ADV, but I love some of what they've been doing lately, such as designing gorgeous thinpak collections (I'm come to terms with the fact that they'll be stripped of extras) and creating promotional torrents. Keep up the good work, I say. ~Dagger~
 5. Let's hope it keeps delivering those ratings. :animesmil In other news, some site has posted an interview with CN's programming manager. I didn't bother watching/listening to it myself, but you can pretty much get the gist of the content from skimming the ANN thread to which I linked (the sixth post down is especially helpful). It's nice to know that there are Paranoia Agent fans over at AS. ~Dagger~
 6.
Another that I recommend is Kyo Kara Maoh!, although I don't know if it is a manga . . . I've only seen the anime. TOO CUTE! It's silly and sweet all at the same time. Add Demon Diary[/B'] to the list (yummy Eclipse) and you've got all my favs!
I'm not sure if there's a Kyo Kara Maoh manga, but the anime is based on a series of novels (which include some manga-style illustrations). With the recent trend of anime/manga-related novels being translated by American companies, I hope someone will pick up KKM soon. I'd love to read the original version of the story. Kyo Kara Maoh actually reminds me very much of Demon Diary, heh (both in terms of its premise and its style of humor). ~Dagger~
 7. Mm... I think we had a thread like this pretty recently, but as I recall it didn't enjoy too much success. Versus topics tend to attract spammy replies, so we generally demand that they start off oozing quality--otherwise, things start to degenerate pretty quickly. For future reference, fizerin, please explain your choices when posting in topics like this one. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 8. Please post here if you would like to discuss Naruto. We try to designate one official catch-all thread for each anime series, movie or OVA; this helps keep the forum nice and organized. Moreover, it would help to bear in mind that OtakuBoards places an emphasis on post quality. This includes giving solid reasons for your choices when posting in favorites threads, using complete sentences, etc. Thanks in advance for taking these things into consideration. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 9. People, this is ridiculous. Sage's original point is fair enough, and I'm sure we'll address in the future. Speaking for myself, I've made the mistake of saying "No introduction threads blah blah as mentioned in our rules yadda yadda" more than once, and frankly I'm surprised that no one's called me on it yet. As has been mentioned by other staff members, tweaking the rules isn't something which can be accomplished with the wave of a wand, but we realize that some changes & corrections need to be made. So take it easy. That said, I'm locking this thread... which kind of pisses me off, because it really shouldn't have been necessary. The fault doesn't lie fully on one side or the other, either. This subject could easily have been discussed/debated without spewing insults and personal attacks all over the place. You guys should know better. Thread frigging closed. :animeangr ~Dagger~
 10. I've permitted Sean to post his piece a day late, as his excuse sounds fair to me (I don't want to be giving out extensions on a regular basis, however, so this is going to be a rare occurence). The Saturday voting deadline still stands. ~Dagger~
 11. Please post here or here if you'd like to discuss any aspect of Advent Children, including the delays in its North American release. Thanks. (By the way... cute avatar!) Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 12. For some reason I thought I had been the last person to post in this thread. Darn--if I'd bothered to check, I would have made some kind of reply a lot sooner. Anyway, I recently worked my way through the last three volumes (I saw discs 5 & 6 back-to-back some weeks ago, and then disc 7 earlier this evening). On the subject of the dub, it improves quite a bit, as far as I'm concerned. What's odd is that the changes are extremely subtle, but they make a huge difference. Even Braden Hunt's Okita sounds markedly better on the last volume than in any of the preceding episodes. God, I loved re-watching the end of this show. It helped that the English VAs absolutely slammed these three episodes out of the ballpark--I was sitting there in pure astonishment, wondering when Luci Christian's young boy voice had become so pitch-perfect. The foley in the battle scenes was very natural and enthusiastic sounding. In fact, the only dubbing choice which rubbed me the wrong way was that they changed
Shinpachi's comedic "Heisuke!!" to "Heisuke, NO!", which completely clashed with his SD expression, haha.
There were some more noticeable art improvements in certain scenes, such as when
Hijikata rushes to Okita's side.
Add that to the fact that there's a lot more detail visible simply because it's the DVD version, and the length of time which has passed since I last saw this part of the series, and it's almost like a whole new viewing experience. I almost melted into a puddle of fannish glee when I encountered one of the DVD extras: a long "side story" narrated by Mitsuki Saiga (with sepia-toned screencaps for the visuals). And the booklet stories were once again excellent. If I could change one thing about the final DVD, I'd find some way to get the last R2 cover on there--it's an awesome image of Tetsu, and there's a tiny glimpse of it on the spine, but that's it. Ah well... you can't have everything. ~Dagger~
 13. As is stated in our rules, OtakuBoards prohibits asking for or providing links to illegal material. This includes licensed, legally available material as well as unlicensed fansubs (or outright bootlegs). My advice? Buy the DVDs, or take your requests elsewhere. We'd love to discuss the content of Fruits Basket (or the features of the official DVDs) with you, but we aren't here to help illegally disseminate it. Please also keep in mind that double posting isn't permitted here. And for the record, you should feel free to private message me if you need to have a duplicate thread deleted (alternatively, hit the "Report Bad Post" button, which basically accomplishes the same thing). Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 14.
Actually, I was thinking that maybe they should be open until Saturday or something...the weekend. I know lots of people have restricted access to the internet during school days. 'course, that's just me... Oh, and what about the match between Sean and Young Cheezy? They just gonna be dropped off the bracket? You know, I've posted way too many times in this thread...
Well, Young Cheezy just posted. He'll win by default if Sean fails to show. I wouldn't have a problem with keeping the matches open till Saturday; I was planning to start the second part of round 1 sometime around then, anyway, so it allows for a nice symmetry. I'm glad you (and others) have posted here repeatedly, heh. Since the running of this tournament has somehow morphed into a one-woman show, I'm going to need all the feedback I can get. :animeswea ~Dagger~
 15.
Yeah... I'm kinda hoping that a match where both entrants didn't submit an entry is a draw...
 16. fizerin, care to elaborate? Light/Kira is an excellent example of this--but, as you mentioned, there's no Death Note anime. I guess his two-second cameo in Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid wouldn't count either, no? ;) I think that Gungrave does a wonderful job of presenting characters whose actions are morally ambivalent and who frequently struggle with their choices. Harry is tormented by
his betrayal of Brandon, and Brandon's perceived betrayal of him.
Brandon, meanwhile, must decide whether to be loyal to
Harry or to Big Daddy.
Despite being criminals and killers, these characters are torn by guilt and--when they seek to do the right thing--have trouble figuring out exactly what the "right thing" is. In Escaflowne, Folken,
who started off being essentially a good person, is drawn astray by fear (among other things). From what I recall, it's made clear that he regrets many of the things he's done.
Elfen Lied may or may not be appropriate for your purposes, but Nana, Lucy and Mariko all vacillate between good and evil (though the series does its best to make these things relative). Lucy is a cold-blooded murderer who has destroyed many lives,
but she also has a more human side (no, I'm not talking about Nyu) that grapples to come to terms with the atrocities she's committed. While she was at first driven to kill, she soon came to take pleasure from it. Is this genetic or something stemming from the individual? That's left up to the viewer to decide.
Oh, and in Devil Lady, Jun (the main character) is at once horrified and drawn in by her own demonic inner nature. On the one hand, Devil Lady upends traditional notions of religion-based morality (like,
God raping Satan?
O~kaay...). On the other hand, Jun still tries--sometimes futilely--to strive for an intangible idea of that which is good. ~Dagger~
 17. This movie is already being discussed in other forums (including Play It and Music, Movies & TV), so please refer elsewhere if you'd like to talk about it further. For the sake of simplicity, let's try to keep the Advent Children threads from spilling across more forums than they already have. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 18. Megumi was still trying to get a handle on Shinji--of the newly arrived pilots, he interested her most, if only for the fact that he was so easy to push around. What a dope. Actually, she amended, drumming her fingers on the arm of her chair, that took much of the fun out of it; his reactions were always sullen, and his retorts dispirited. For some reason she had been prepared to accept him as a model of a younger Ayato, but she simply couldn't make the image fit. And now she was bored-- Yawning, she watched the girl--what was her name again? Sakuranbo? Sakura?--speak animatedly with Alexander. They seemed to be getting along just fine, she thought sourly; she'd never aspired to be a pilot of any kind, but there was something vaguely irritating about being surrounded by so many people--most of them little older than she--with such an unusual set of skills. Having an older sister like Haruka was discouraging enough; now she couldn't even compete with others her age. And then there was the blue-haired one with the soft dead-sounding voice, the scarlet eyes. She would have been sort of fascinating, too, if she weren't so unbearably creepy. Megumi heard a tapping sound and realized only later that it had been her own foot, jiggling nervously against the floor. She aimed a baleful look at the two still talking. When would Ayato and Shinji return? She didn't loathe herself. She didn't have a sister complex, she had most certainly never harbored a crush on Ayato, and she never (never!) picked on others just for the heck of it. She wasn't quick-tempered; she always remembered to feed Buchi; she didn't find Quon to be unduly annoying... There he was, the brat. "Oi!" she yelled, waving, before Sakura or Alexander could slip in a word edgeways greet him. "Shinji!" The boy appeared momentarily cowed--he was used to this sort of treatment, she'd decided not long after meeting him--then shuffled over. Ayato watched his progress from behind, an almost Itsuki-esque look of amusement flickering across his face. Glancing over Shinji's shoulder, she scowled at him happily; in response Ayato made a frame with his fingers, as though snapping a picture. It was an old joke of theirs, probably the only thing he had shared with her before sharing it with Haruka. Later, there was the usual bantering and a not-so-usual round of badgering Shinji about Rei. Later, she worked up the courage (which seemed somehow silly, in retrospect--who needed courage just to approach some shy red-eyed girl?) to talk to Rei herself, a conversation which gleaned her little aside from the fact that Rei was, surprisingly, capable of laughing. Later still, she began secretly planning to hold a death-match between PenPen and Buchi. She could probably make a load of money through betting... All was well in the world, she concluded eventually. So it seemed.
 19. Don't bring back really old topics, please. The only exceptions to this rule are threads that deal specifically with one anime series, movie or OVA. That aside, necromancy just isn't allowed. Who wants to see the rotting corpse of some long-dead topic lumbering haplessly about the forum? Not me. :) Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 20.
Adult Swim will finally be putting FullMetal Alchemist back on Saturdays, with new episodes starting this Saturday! *fangirl squeal*
Excellent! Although I still have to watch volumes 3 through 5, haha. I recently pre-ordered the volume 6 + tin + OST set; I had been expecting all three tins to be the same color, but apparently they're going to end up being black --> white --> red, which is actually a lot cooler as far as I'm concerned. Go, Funi, go~! Hong Kong-ese? XD ~Dagger~
 21. Apparently, the answer is yes. Next time, please be sure to check the Directory sticky before starting a new series-specific thread. Also, it would help to bear in mind that we expect those creating this type of thread to provide a little information about the show in question. Giving your beginning post a little substance sets a good example for other members and keeps the topic from breaking down into spam. Thanks for taking this into consideration. If you have any questions, feel free to private message me or one of the other staff members. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 22.
actually filter is what brought me to this site xP. but my question is...whats so cool about this site? it just seems like another forum for me
The main site is theOtaku. OtakuBoards and myOtaku are both parts of this network. I didn't see the show myself, but I was under the impression that Filter was referring primarily to myO, our anime blog site/service, rather than OB. ~Dagger~
 23. If you're recruiting for an RPG that's going to take place at OtakuBoards, go ahead and post in the Adventure Inn (our RPG recruiting forum), after reading the relevant stickies and so forth. If your planned RPG is going to take place elsewhere, then you'd be best off sticking offers like this in your signature. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 24. I merged the previous version of this thread with the official Naruto topic, which is supposed to encompass all Naruto-related discussion (including stuff about the dub). Feel free to edit the content here into your second post in the Naruto thread; I'm deleting the first, so it's no longer a double. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
 25. Hey--I was the first convert on these boards! Way to steal my glory. :p More seriously, I understand why people in the scientific community are so tense about ID, but lashing out and foaming at the mouth about it just makes them look bad. While I don't agree with teaching ID in science classes--let's save that kind of talk for philosophy & history classes, please--I think they definitely have a point in regards to the fact that those trying to crack down on and totally eliminate the very idea of ID are acting little different from those who have tried to suppress alternative viewpoints throughout history. Of course, not all alternative viewpoints are right. Not all will survive the test of the years. The theory of evolution itself took a very long time to be accepted. As far as I'm concerned, the scientists are being too defensive, and the IDers are expecting too much to happen in a rather short period of time. I think it would be just as much a victory for them to make ID a major part of the curriculum of philosophy courses; people shouldn't need science's seal of approval to believe in God (or consider the idea of believing in one), anyway. :animesigh ~Dagger~
