"I've heard you're supposed to make an appearance at the Mecha Battlefield today," remarked Solo. Blinking, Dagger groped about for the remote, saw it lying on the floor and tapped the pause button with her toe. "Eh?" she said with typical eloquence, twisting around in her chair. "Who told you that? I've still got about thirty Get Backers episodes to catch up with. And after that I was planning on finishing Wolf's Rain." She patted the seat beside her. "Come on, you deserve a break. Just watch this next match--it's going to be amazing." Several shouts rang across the room, and they both glanced over to see that a minor scuffle had developed between a Touya, several Kamuis and two Kenshins. Solo sighed. "No rest for the wicked, I suppose," he muttered. "To answer your question, it wasn't anyone specific. Just the buzz on the street, so to speak." "Maybe I will go down there," Dagger mused. "It's been a while. But Gundams put me in such a bad mood... and if I have to go up against another Eva, I'll scream. What do you think?" "Shown them how it's done," he said, idly hefting his Mod-Rod as he eyed the still-squabbling CLAMP characters. "Anyway, I'd best take care of that little mess yonder. Be sure to PM me if you do end up fighting. I'd like to see it." She threw him a smart salute. "Roger that." But before doing anything, she would need to go double-check the Battlefield rules. Numerous problems had arisen when the Battlefield was first created, due to the fact that certain mecha--particularly Evas and RahXephons--could, if used by an experienced member, become virtually omnipotent. So various guidelines had been implemented in order to help level the playing field and ensure that victory would depend more on skill than on your mecha of choice. Yet for every new regulation, there was at least one mecha fiend able to sniff out some kind of loophole. The full rule-book would soon be well over three volumes long, and she wanted to make certain she was up-to-date. It really had been a while... she hoped the particular mecha she had in mind (which was sentient, relatively small, and more humanoid/organic than most combat robots) was still permitted. Whistling softly--or trying to, rather--Dagger stuck her hands in her pockets and ambled down toward the Battlefield. She could always stroll right on out if she lost interest. Assuming, of course, she wasn't noticed.

Because I know I'm not the only one who likes to talk about this sort of thing. This thread could go in any number of directions, so I'll let you all determine what the discussion focuses on first. You're welcome to mention just about anything yaoi or yuri-related--why you like it (or even why you don't, although I'd take great care in opening that particular can of worms), your favorite and least favorite yaoi/yuri anime, the pairings you support, etc. I'll start off by highlighting a couple of new and not-so-new yaoi & yuri series; it's been a fantastic year for these twin genres, and it seems likely that they will continue to gain in popularity. Love it or hate it, Kannaduki no Miko is quite possibly the most daring yuri anime ever made, well known for the tormented and passionate relationship between its two main characters. It's rather controversial, due to its depiction of
female/female rape
, and has sparked many intense debates. Kannaduki no Miko also has the unique distinction of being the only lesbian romance (to my knowledge) that manages to encompass super-bishounen and giant robots. Uta~Kata, too, is one of a kind; it's distinguished by the fact that it features a canon yaoi relationship in addition to two female/female relationships. A quiet coming-of-age story with beautiful animation and quite a bit of underage fanservice, it showcases character designs very similar to those found in Kiddy Grade. Sukisho is probably the first "real" shounen-ai television anime to come along since Gravitation and Mirage of Blaze were made. Much like Gravitation, it combines slightly insane comedy with dark drama; however, Sukisho has a more mysterious story and even some supernatural elements. It's based on a series of popular boys' love games. Of the anime coming to the States this year, keep an eye out for the Gravitation OVA and the wildly popular fantasy parody Kyo Kara Maoh (which has more than its share of bishounen and shounen-ai jokes). Shounen-ai anime that have yet to air in Japan include Loveless, based on a manga by Kouga Yun, and (or so rumor has it) Cluster Edge. On the yuri side of things, the currently running show Mai-Hime is not strictly a shoujo-ai series, but it includes a lot of f/f innuendo and hints. Anyway, feel free to take this topic where you will. :animesmil ~Dagger~

Lust is so cool. And what an appropriate name... :animenose Though not as dramatic as the previous episode (after all, how could it possibly have matched that level of intensity?), episode 16 still had some very strong moments. Despite the wonderful Al-centric jokes--it sounded like his voice actor was having a lot of fun, heh--everything felt pretty bleak. Naturally, the constant rain, the gray skies and the brothers' situation added greatly to that sense of darkness.
Between Lust's crew and Scar, it's clear that trouble will be coming around the corner. Lust and Scar are obviously not the type to take breaks.
~Dagger~

Even though I spend most of my time in the anime/manga forums, I love the fact that OtakuBoards encompasses so much more than that. The level of activity is also nice; I'm able to find something new almost every time I visit, but it's not so fast-paced that I have trouble keeping up with things. The community is wonderful, as others have mentioned; I really like the members here, and I find the atmosphere appealing. In general there's a level of tolerance and respect that can be hard to find elsewhere online. Naturally, the emphasis on post quality is also something I very much appreciate. I can't imagine leaving. :catgirl: ~Dagger~
Well, I'm a new Otaku...I just got into anime and my exposure has been limited thus far... ...InuYasha, because it's like the anime equivalent of romantic comedy.
First of all, welcome to the fold. Once you're sucked in, there's no turning back. :animesmil I'm not sure that I would call Inuyasha a romantic comedy, although it definitely has elements of romance and humor. Anyway, if you enjoy those aspects of the show, then I strongly recommend taking a look at Fruits Basket. It's a superb romantic comedy and can be rented or bought quite cheaply. I'd say it's easily one of my favorite shoujo anime, and something I've always wanted to re-watch in full. ~Dagger~

Welcome to OtakuBoards. ^_^ If you would like to discuss .hack//SIGN or .hack//Legend of the Twilight, please check the "Directory" sticky topic for links to their official threads. Or if you're interested in talking about the .hack video games, feel free to post about them in Play It, our video game forum. But before doing any of this, be sure to carefully review OtakuBoards' Rules and FAQ. We try to maintain pretty high standards when it comes to post quality; this entails making your posts as readable as possible by using proper punctuation & capitalization to the best of your ability.
But, I could be wrong. There's 2 things I haven't seen yet.. Turn A and V.
Turn A is great, assuming one can get past the fact that the main mecha has a moustache. :animesigh
In a lot of semi-official rankings, seed is the #1 best Mecha anime EVER. Honesly; I don't really understand at all how SEED can be THAT good.
I don't suppose you're referring to those pesky NewType polls... I am not a fan of SEED. However, its popularity is undeniable. It's definitely one of--if not the--most popular mecha anime since Neon Genesis Evangelion first hit the scene, and so even though I'm not really sure what you're trying to say by referencing "semi-official rankings," it's not surprising. But ultimately, popularity doesn't have that much to do with quality (although I certainly wouldn't go so far as to suggest some kind of inverse relationship). Sometimes there's just no accounting for taste. :animesmil ~Dagger~

Just a general note to those posting in this thread... Some of the replies here have been fine, but a lot of them are less coherent than I'd like. Your dreams don't have to make sense, heh, but the least you can do is describe them in a way that's relatively easy to follow--which entails using proper sentence & paragraph breaks (not to mention correct capitalization, punctuation, etc.) to the best of your ability. No one's posts need to be perfect, but they should be readable. Please keep this in mind for the future. Thanks! :) ~Dagger~

Gah, you beat me to it! :animesmil I just started watching Kaleido Star earlier this week, and I am completely hooked. The entire first season has been released on DVD, by the way. The second season is called Kaleido Star: New Wings, and was supposed to start coming out in early March, but for some reason it's been delayed. I believe that a prequel (something like "Golden Phoenix: The Story of Layla Hamilton") was recently announced, and a while ago there were reports that a mahou shoujo spin-off focusing on the character called Rosetta was in the works. I don't know the status of the latter project, though. Anyway, Kaleido Star is wonderful. I bought all six DVDs of season 1 in one fell swoop, but right now I'm only up to episode 8 or so. The performances are incredibly beautiful, and for me watching them is a real adrenaline rush, almost comparable to the feeling I get when I see a really well-choreographed fight scene. It has just the right balance of humor and drama, and I absolutely love Sora. I know it's kind of cliche to describe a show as "magical," but Kaleido Star really embodies the adjective. Obviously the smooth animation and great music help. I haven't seen a shoujo anime this exciting or addictive since I finished watching Full Moon wo Sagashite. Kaleido Star is very vibrant, and it works well even when falling back on familiar shoujo conventions, since the setting is so unique. I can't wait to get home and tackle the third DVD. ~Dagger~

Welcome to OtakuBoards. ^_^ When starting a new series-specific thread, it's a good idea to provide some information about the show/movie/OVA in question. This helps attract higher-quality responses and gives other members a better idea of what you're talking about, not to mention which aspects of the anime you'd prefer to discuss. I strongly recommend that you edit your post to incorporate some more details, perhaps including your own opinion of Tales of Eternia or a quick summary of the series. If you have any questions, feel free to private message me or one of the other moderators. Thanks! ~Dagger~

A little while ago you created a thread very similar to this one, and at that time I merged it with a pre-existing topic (which had only fallen back to the second page of the forum). Normally I'd perform another merge, but your post here is almost identical to the one you previously made, so I figured that it'd be sort of redundant. If you have any questions, feel free to private message me or one of the other moderators. Thanks. Thread closed. ~Dagger~
I've definitely noticed a certain stigma attached to Yu Yu Hakusho.
I think that would be alsome. anyway i dont think they have english subtitles?? so its a waist :animeangr just download fansubs then buy the bootlegs and think you are putting money in Tv tokyo's pocket
Well... R2s are aimed at Japanese fans, not foreign audiences. So it kind of makes sense. A few R2s do have English subtitles--for example, I'm pretty sure that the R2 versions of Studio Ghibli films nearly always come with English subs (although the translation used may differ somewhat from the translation used in Disney's release of the movie in question). Anyway, I think I'm going to bow out of this thread before I drag it further off topic. If you'd like to discuss R.O.D the TV or any other anime, feel free to check the Directory sticky for a link to that show's official thread. ~Dagger~
I have just since Gravitation thanks to my friend yunasgrace being able to download it. And i was just wondering what was in the photo that the guy from ASK took does anyone know. Plus give me your opinions on the characters!!!
This was implied more strongly in the manga, so some confusion is certainly understandable. Aizawa (the guy from ASK) took pictures of
Shuichi being molested and/or raped.
The latter is canon, but given what's shown in the anime I can see why one would interpret it either way. Anyway, my opinions of the characters are somewhat tainted by reading the manga. Yuki is by far my favorite member of the cast. I admire Tohma's poker face and his quiet ruthlessness, but that aside, I can't say I care for him very much. I guess you could say that I respect his intelligence and methods but don't like his personality. Hiro, Ryuichi and Shuichi would fall somewhere between the two extremes, with Shuichi and Hiro being closer to Yuki and Ryuichi being closer to Tohma. ~Dagger~
Thanks dude, i feel dumb. Hm? was the hole berserk thing a huge financial loss, because there is talk of a 2nd season. Back to naruto: so i am buying bootlegs, well my dvd player can play sony dvds, memorx, and more. it is a "cyber home" 2003. here a picture of the set http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/20057851/Images/naruto-i003_5.jpg
I think rumors or reports of a potential second season would probably indicate that Berserk sold well. No point in sinking more money into an already-failed endeavor. Based on what I've seen, no legit Naruto box sets have been released yet. Here's an example of one of the most recent Naruto DVDs. The price is actually very good for an R2... and the early volumes are even more inexpensive. Of course, none of that will help much if you don't understand Japanese (although some fans purposely buy R2s without knowing a word of Japanese, so there you have it). ~Dagger~
-
I dont get that joke?
It's not a joke, it's a question. R2 DVDs can't play on R1 players unless the R1 player has been deliberately hacked in order to make it an all-region player. That's the purpose of the region system. I asked because many websites sell stuff marked as being imports or R2s, when they're actually region-free (Region 0) bootlegs. You could very well be buying authentic R2s, for all I know, but that's not really what it sounds like based on what you've said. *shrugs* Don't you think fans of Naruto would be a bit upset if Viz stopped at episode 25? Not to mention that it'd probably mean a huge financial loss for them as well... :animeswea ~Dagger~
Gundam X, Gundam ZZ, Turn A Gundam, Victory Gundam, or Gundam Seed Destiney?
Probably GSD. If I had my way, it'd be Turn A... but I don't often have my way when it comes to this sort of thing. :animesigh The more I see of Turn A, the more I like it. The artwork could have used a little kick in the pants, but the animation is nice enough. It has a sense of gentle, subdued playfulness to it that I haven't really seen in other Gundam series (with the exception of G Gundam, but that show just overdoes it in terms of campiness). ~Dagger~
Hm? right but i got some great R2's, with no problem. Will Naruto be on As? anyway i dont thing R1 DVDs are wroth it,only if its uncut. Do the right thing Viz, stop the series when they found out zabaib is still alive, like they did with berserk :)
Do your R2 DVDs have English and/or Chinese subtitles? Do they play on an R1 player? If so, they probably aren't genuine R2s to begin with... Most R1 DVDs are uncut, and I have faith that Viz/ShoPro/whoever's handling this series won't be dumb enough to release it only in a censored form. Even shows that are edited for TV usually get an uncut DVD release--this applies to a couple of 4Kids anime as well, although it certainly took a while. One option would be to take the route FUNimation went with Yu Yu Hakusho; they originally started releasing edited as well as unedited DVDs (which were clearly marked as being different via their cover artwork and so forth). I don't know if they're still coming out with the edited YYH DVDs, though. Your reference to Berserk is a little confusing. All of Berserk that was ever animated is now available on R1 DVD and has been for a while. What are you referring to? ~Dagger~

I think I mentioned this in one if my earlier posts, but man was that ever a long time ago... There are so many incredible stories that never have been and probably never will be animated. As an example, Death Note (probably not the best example, given that it's a Shonen Jump title and as such has a fairly good chance of becoming an anime, but bear with me) is simply incredible. It has one of the most fascinating, engrossing and suspenseful plots I've encountered in any form of entertainment. Not to sound cheesy, but it's really a work of art. I'd be deeply saddened if someone missed out on it--or any other quality manga-only series--because he or she assumed manga has nothing to offer which one can't already find in anime. ~Dagger~

I don't know that this thread is poised to attract the kind of responses we usually look for. We do already have a "best Gundam" (or something like that) topic, for whatever it's worth, and I believe there was a pretty interesting Gundam vs. Eva thread floating around here a couple of months back. We've been pretty lenient about versus topics lately, as a matter of fact... yet much like "favorites" threads, they run the risk of getting closed pretty quickly unless they demonstrate a lot of creativity or thoughtfulness. The idea itself isn't inherently flawed or anything, but with something like this what frequently happens is that people reply to the thread with a "hit and run" type of approach, posting the name of their favorite mecha and little more. I'd definitely be open to a broader or more in-depth discussion/comparison of (non-Gundam, as we sort of already have that covered) mecha anime. Given what I've seen in the past, though, I'm a little leery of topics restricted solely to answering the question of which machine would win in a fight. And all too often what happens is that it turns into a popularity contest, with members supporting the mecha from the series they personally like best, not the ones which would in actuality be most powerful. Anyway, feel free to private message me or one of the other moderators if you have questions or concerns. Thanks! Thread closed. ~Dagger~
Whoa, wait a minute. The FIRST FIVE?! O_o How many are they going to have?! And what happens after the first five fill their casing? Where will the remaining 95 DVDs go?![/SIZE']
I think there are supposed to be a total of thirteen DVDs spread across three boxes, with five in the first tin and four in each of the next two tins.
As for the sticker thing, those are pissing me off. They are such a pain to get off, and, contrary to popular belief, I don't have a hair dryer. Oh man, I already ripped them off, and now the sticky residue is left. Not even water is removing it, and alcohol did jack. I'm not going to try acetone, haha. Maybe soda? O_o
Try soaking them in canola oil for a bit; that's what I did before I learned about the hairdryer trick, and it did help to a certain extent. You'll probably have to do a lot of fingernail-scraping... once you get the bulk of it off, normal soap and some more scrubbing should take care of the filmy residue.
Do you know what language the song "Brothers" is sung in (it's in the soundtrack)?
i'm pretty sure that most anime's have a character called either akira or sho or something similar. crossovers rule. could you imagine nambeshin in the gundam or dragonball universes?
That's not really a "crossover," though... not unless they're the exact same Akira, at any rate. :animeswea Oh, I just remembered a pretty good one. Genshiken is a series about a group of Japanese otaku, several of whom are obsessed with an anime called Kujibiki Unbalance. The full Kujibiki Unbalance opening is shown once or twice during Genshiken, as are brief excerpts from the show itself. Genshiken's cast can often be found discussing/hashing over the finer points of the series. The creators of Genshiken actually made three episodes of Kujibiki Unbalance, and packaged them with the Japanese Genshiken DVDs as OVAs. Of course this means that although Kujibiki Unbalance was supposed to be a twenty-six episode show, only episodes 1, 3 and 26 (or something like that) actually exist. But I think it qualifies as a pretty unique crossover anyway. :animesmil ~Dagger~

If you'd like to discuss the FLCL manga, please post about it in the Manga Workshop. If you'd like to discuss the anime, please post in this thread, which can also be found by checking the "Directory" sticky topic. If you have any questions, feel free to private message me or one of the other moderators. Also, please keep in mind that your post quality could use a bit of work; when starting a series-specific topic (not that it was necessary in this case, given that we already had an official FLCL thread), it's best to provide some information about the anime in question, or at least offer your own opinion before soliciting the opinions of others. Thanks! Thread closed. ~Dagger~
I dont know japanese but what i mean is watching it subbed, it is better then watching it dubbed, but the R1 DVDs have them both. But i rather what the japanese dvd with subtitles then watch Viz R1 DVD.
The Japanese Naruto DVDs don't have English subtitles. They're also rather expensive--as in about $40 for 70 minutes of content. Even at three episodes per disc (and let's hope that doesn't happen), the R1 DVDs would be a much better value. You're welcome to try and import the R2s, but it's best to be aware of what you're getting into... ~Dagger~
