1.
Wow, Solo Tremaine warned you two times and Dagger IX1 warned all you too. i guest this topic is locked. rule in the future be more specific in your post. So please try and include more details about the anime, manga, video games ect; and followKaze's reply.
If you see a questionable post, feel free to click the "report bad post" button (which is a gray exclamation point displayed in the area above each user's avatar). However, sniping at other members (not to mention making assumptions about how a mod will handle a particular situation) can only lead to trouble and confusion. In conclusion, please don't play mod. Thanks. We now continue with our regularly scheduled thread... ~Dagger~
 2.
But it wouldnt be the same. Its like trying to slove a puzzle, and missing a piece. You all ready know what it is but you dont feel right, same with naruto. you miss the goodness of the Raw Dvd.
If you are used to watching Naruto raw and want to continue doing so, you can always turn the subtitles off. Even if it's not an option in the DVD's language menu, you can usually switch off subtitles using a button found on your player's remote control. At least I assume that's what you're talking about... :animeswea ~Dagger~
 3. Ease off on the smilies a bit; using that many kind of breaks up your post and makes it hard to figure out what you're saying. Note: I never said that you or anyone has to see the English version. All I said was that the names would not be changed... I mean, if you really do plan on buying the R1 DVDs, you'll be able to choose between watching it in English and watching it in Japanese. Sure, Bandai would probably have been better. But the difference between Bandai and Viz is negligible compared to the difference between Viz (or any other decent company) and 4Kids. ~Dagger~
 4. This could be cool. Will characters who have unusual powers in their respective anime retain those powers in the RPG? To use the example you provided, would Mako-chan be able to transform? What about characters who have special (non-supernatural) talents? The main character of Rurouni Kenshin is very good at cooking and even better at using a sword. Would he get to keep both of those skills? Also, would it be permissible to select a manga character? :catgirl: And lastly, do I assume correctly in thinking that an established voting system would preclude the possibility of a spontaneous battle royale...? :animeshy: You might want to create a more detailed/in-depth sign-up sheet, by the way, since some people may end up selecting obscure characters. ~Dagger~
 5. Anime-related: - When people get upset because a show they like has been licensed (assuming it was licensed by a good company--that is to say, not 4Kids or Tokyopop). God, that pisses me off. Little whiners can't stand the idea of actually having to pay money for their entertainment. It's even worse when they go on to say crap like "America ruins everything!!11!" or start moaning about how dubs are always bad because Japanese as a language is inherently superior to English. :animeangr - Which brings me to my next one... subtitle elitists. To clarify, I have nothing wrong with fans who just prefer to watch everything subbed. That's your choice. But people who complain about the simple fact that a dub is being made for a particular anime--even if the Japanese vocal track will also be available on DVD--really get my goat. There's absolutely no reason for anyone to find the mere existence of an English-dubbed version so offensive. No one's forcing you to watch it. Now I'm all annoyed. I guess I'll post my non-anime pet peeves later, then. :animesigh ~Dagger~
 6.
wait will adult swim get it or Cn??? I am so glad i got the japanese cut. I dont care if i buy bootlegs, its better then watching this Naruto: hi Jim Sasuke:Hi Mac NOOOOOOOOOO there going to give them english names! Back to what i was saying: i am ever thing but happy. This will ruin Naruto. People will look at naruto in horror, kids in my school will talk about it. It will fall in the foot steps of one piece. Thay wil have it on cartoon network!!!??? Richard Cox will ruin, uh lets say kakashi like he did inu-yasha. Only chance for happyness is to sing a song from naruto. OHYAOHYAOHYA
Whoa, Nelly. Relax, will ya? First off, I do hope you realize that "CN" is an abbrevation for "Cartoon Network," and that Adult Swim is simply the name for one of Cartoon Network's late-night programming blocks. Secondly, if you had read ShoPro's press release, you would no doubt have noticed that they used the characters' Japanese names (Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, etc). So I don't think there's any reason to fear that Naruto will become "Nathan the Magical Ninja" or whatever. Thirdly, it's sad that 4Kids mutilated One Piece, but 4Kids didn't license Naruto. So right now there's really no point in getting yourself all worked up over baseless comparisons. Viz isn't the greatest company out there, but I think they're up to the task of not totally "ruining" Naruto, and they've put out some excellent DVDs in the past. Making ridiculous Chicken Little-esque assertions about the American release and saying you'll buy bootlegs--without even giving the R1 version a chance!--doesn't do anything for your credibility. :animesigh ~Dagger~
 7. Today at Katsucon, Media Blasters announced that they have the rights to Genshiken (along with several other anime, including the Phantom OVA and Hi no Tori). I'm not totally sure that this is something I'll want to run out and buy right away--although Mitsuki Saiga's prominent role makes that rather tempting--but we'll see. It's nice that it's licensed, in any case. ~Dagger~
 8. Ah! My Goddess licensed [scroll down a bit; the article doesn't have its own page, so I couldn't link to it directly] I figured that Ah! My Goddess TV would be licensed soon, but I certainly hadn't thought it would be this soon, and definitely not by Media Blasters. In a way this is a pleasant surprise... Media Blasters is a smaller company than Geneon (which released the movie), but they do treat their anime very well, and it's cool to see them net another fan favorite. It's just funny that the various R1 AMG properties have been spread out across at least four different companies. ~Dagger~
 9.
something died inside of me watching that episode. I think I cried at certain parts. [spoiler']when I saw Mustand execute those doctors, I was sad, but when they torned out to be that one girl's family, I felt shocked. The state alchemists blowing up everything was sick too. The part that touched me most, though, wad when it showed that little girl holding her deaed mother, covered in blood.

Same here... I completely froze up. During some scenes, I was so tense with horror that the dialogue just kind of washed past me. I was not expecting the series to go in that direction. It gave me a different feeling than the one I got from the "Nina" episode, and in many ways this was worse. And additionally...
Roy Mustang killed Winry's parents!?
I'm with you in that
seeing her picture half-covered in blood
really got to me. Only a couple of days ago, I had been watching and re-watching episode 3, which depicts
Winry's grief in the aftermath of her parents' deaths, and Ed and Al's sadness/inability to help her cope.
So this one aspect of the plot was more prominent in my mind than it might otherwise have been, and that made what was revealed seem even more shocking. It's not often that facial expressions in anime have much of an impact on me. Fullmetal Alchemist is actually rather exceptional in that regard; the animators did an amazing job of visually showing the characters' emotions. I will never forget
the look on Mustang's face right after he shot Winry's mom and dad.
I'd write more about the episode, but I'm not terribly stable at the moment, so I think I'm going to sleep on it for a bit. ~Dagger~
 10. Dagger slept in a hammock. It was a very nice hammock, as a matter of fact, and saved her the trouble of clearing up sufficient space for a proper bed. In her opinion, the floor was as valid a storage area as her overflowing closet and shelves, several of which had begun to tilt in a manner suggestive of a certain tower located somewhere in Italy. Wait, was Pisa in Italy? She frowned, then decided that the point wasn't worth pursuing; last night's twenty-episode Sailor Moon marathon had probably been more than enough to permanently curdle her sense of geography. Groaning, she slid out of her hammock, stumbled over her own Mod-Rod and went flailing into a four-foot pile of DVDs. She muttered something about punishing them in the name of the Moon, then realized she lacked the requisite magical girl scepter-type-thing. And in any case, she wasn't feeling particularly sparkly. For her, the main disadvantage of being on the virtual island was that it made using male avatars a bit less... convenient. Nowadays she usually rotated between a few pleasantly androgynous female characters, which allowed her to keep members on their toes without creating too much confusion. Unfortunately, the character she had switched to three days ago was rather petite and childishly built, and she still hadn't grown accustomed to her new body. Approximately fifteen cardboard boxes were piled outside of her door. She winced, realizing she simply had no place to stick any of the stuff she'd ordered yesterday. Mentally reminding herself to never again go shopping on an empty stomach, she stuck her head out into the hall. "Oi, Solo!" she yelled. "I've got a huge favor to ask, if you--" It seemed he wasn't there, which meant he had already begun making his rounds. Dagger switched on her wrist-band--which looked suspiciously like a knock-off of the mecha-summoning watch in Big O--and spun one of several little knobs until she located Solo's signal. His face crackled onto the miniature screen. "Hey, Dagger. Is something wrong?" "Well--there isn't anything wrong, per se, but I just got a new shipment of ramen, and I think the kitchen is already sort of, uh, about to explode. Oh, and I found a huge stack of artbooks in the east elevator last night. Any idea how they got there?" "How many?" he asked. "What, artbooks? I'm not sure--the pile was much taller than me--" "No... How many packages of ramen did you buy?" "Er, I can't quite remember," she said guiltily. "Probably well over a hundred. They were fifty percent off, if it helps. Any advice?" "Try doing a give-away in one of the high-traffic forums. As for the artbooks, they should probably be taken back to the Manga Workshop." "Yeah, I'll take care of that. Thanks!" "No problem, " he told her, and promptly signed off.
 11. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. :animesmil To follow up on what I said earlier, I've run into a few more signs that the Elfen Lied DVDs will be released pretty soon (though ADV still hasn't made any formal announcements). Diamond Comics, a distributor that deals with (among other things) anime and manga, recently updated with their "May" previews. To clarify, not everything on the list is necessarily slated for May--some titles may come out a bit earlier, and some may come out later. Anyway, Elfen Lied appeared as: ELFEN LIED VOL 1 DVD SRP: $29.98 ELFEN LIED VOL 1 DVD W/ ARTBOX SRP: $39.98 It was later confirmed that Elfen Lied would be spread out over four discs--so it's managed to escape the Gantz treatment, apparently--and that the box would be chipboard. This may be a first for ADV, as they tend to give short series flimsy artboxes, rather than the sturdy chipboard ones that come with longer anime like Peacemaker, Chrono Crusade and Full Metal Panic. Later, some people found this image on Diamond Comics' site. It doesn't look like an actual DVD cover, given the lack of a volume number or title, but it very well might be one of the sides of the artbox. If so, then I'm even more pleased. ~Dagger~
 12. Yay, thanks for adding them! :catgirl: I love these smilies, haha. Anyway, I agree with Azure in that some of the other smilies--while fun--just aren't likely to get used very often. The two he posted are pretty good examples of that. If it's at all feasible, I think it'd be pretty cool to see Baron's idea put into action (making it so that each member could look at the full list and select their own set of "default" smilies to show up on the shortcut bar). After all, the ones I personally dislike or would never use might be near & dear to another member's heart. ~Dagger~
 13.
I just watched Episode 1, yeah I'm a bit behind, but I found it quite interesting to watch, I thought it was going to be a Shaman King-esque type of thing, but it totally changed around half way through.[/SIZE']
I love your banner and avatar! Have you by any chance been watching Sukisho? Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you think of future episodes. Bleach can get pretty intense at times, and so far each plot twist is better than the last.
Hmmm after episode 13 i just sorta lost interest in the anime. but if it's as good as you say it is i may have to go back to it. I was looking foreward to seeing when
Renji & Byakuya[/spoiler'] would finally make their appearance in the series, but when that random *** Shinigami showed up during the Grand Fisher saga it gave me the impression they weren't gonna show at all. I hope im wrong.
Episode 17 marks the beginning of
a two-episode fight in which Ichigo goes up against Renji. But just when he starts winning, he totally gets his *** handed to him by Byakuya.
Afterward,
they take Rukia back to Soul Society to be executed. Ichigo goes to train with Urahara's crew; he manages to awaken his own latent shinigami powers and speaks with the "spirit" (or something) of his sword (which was badly broken by Byakuya). Meanwhile, Ishida does a bit of special training on his own, and Orihime and Chad work with Urahara's black cat to develop & control their newly discovered powers. Surprisingly, Renji has turned out to be more tolerant and kind than Byakuya. He really was genuinely shocked when Byakuya announced that Rukia was to be disposed of.
I assume all of this mirrors events in the manga. On that note, I've heard that the anime is up to or past volume 7! That's got to be a record for fast pacing, heh. In any case, I was very taken with the
training
sequences. As they're a staple of just about every shounen action anime, I wasn't expecting much, but so far they've been quite entertaining. Parts of
Urahara's regimen
remind me of scenes from Hunter x Hunter (while still being rather original), and that's definitely a good thing. ~Dagger~
 14. I don't use smilies all that liberally, but I happen to be rather enamored of the ones found on this page. I think they'd make a nice addition to OB's emoticon stable, and could probably replace some of the currently existing smilies (for example, I think Mr. Granholm's "sweatdrop" smiley is a bit more visually appealing than the one featured here). And after all, no anime-related forum is complete without a decent neko/catgirl smiley. ~Dagger~
 15.
Remember, it's a Viz (plus Shopro..?) production, and the last time I checked they weren't participating in the Anime Network.
*nods* And anyway, CN already sent out a press release stating that they had the rights to broadcast Naruto. So... yeah. I'd be kind of depressed if a show this huge ended up on the Anime Network--not that I have anything against ADV, but still.
As for the companies dubbing Naruto, I'm rather indifferent. Shopro's history of licenses isn't a very good omen: Hamtaro, Megaman NT Warrior, and so on (Though Inuyasha had a couple redeeming qualities).. But that doesn't prove much. Inuyasha, while its voices are obscenely whiny, remained pretty faithful to the Japanese cut.
You're referring to the Ocean Group, right? Admittedly, a number of their dubs do kind of suck, but others are nothing short of excellent (i.e. Soul Taker and Infinite Ryvius). The problem is that it ends up feeling like something of a lottery. Gundam SEED's dub, for example, pretty much murdered my interest in the series... it had its good points, but after a while the mediocre/poor performances just came to outweigh the strong ones in my mind. ~Dagger~
 16. Is this intended to be a discussion of anime artwork or manga artwork? Some fans practically use the two terms interchangeably, so one can never really know. If it's the latter, I'll move the thread to the Manga Workshop. Of course, I don't want to take action without being informed of the original poster's intentions. Clarification would be appreciated. ~Dagger~
 17. I second everything Solo said, and I urge all future respondents to carefully read his post. Kaze set an excellent example; because of that, I'd like to save this thread. A few months ago, my first answer would have been Naruto. No other anime has ever been so wildly popular in America before officially reaching American shores. The industry could probably use another smash hit. I'm not even a fan of the show, but I strongly believe that--if treated properly--Naruto could win over a whole new generation of anime fans. Of course, this is now more or less a moot point. :p My second answer would have been Samurai Champloo--which, happily, is also coming to Cartoon Network. If this trend keeps up, I'll completely run out of suggestions. Hunter x Hunter would make a superb replacement for Yu Yu Hakusho, as that series is nearing its end (though I'm sure they'll keep around the re-runs for a while). Most of it is more or less Toonami-friendly... they'd have to cut out the implied pedophilia and some of the extreme violence in certain episodes, but overall I don't think HxH would suffer from a bit of editing. Cartoon Network could use a few more (non-Gundam!) mecha series, too. Kenran Butousai is a delightfully light-hearted and well-animated romp from the same studio that made Fullmetal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain. I bet it'd do rather well on either Toonami or Adult Swim. Soukyuu no Fafner's visual style would appeal to fans of Gundam SEED--and it's a vastly superior show anyway, so I see no problems there. It would fare better on Adult Swim, I think, due to the heavy themes and high number of character deaths. ~Dagger~
 18. We've had a truly astonishing number of Gundam-related threads lately. I went back and merged the past few "favorite/best Gundam series" topics... I wouldn't normally do this, but there have been so many in the past few months that I figured it might be helpful to compile all of the responses. On a related note, there's also a best Gundam (as in the mecha, not the various anime) floating about. There might be a certain amount of overlap involved here; please let me know it if leads to any confusion. ~Dagger~
 19. I can't say I'm too torn up about the fact that YYH will be ending relatively soon... after all, I'm still waiting for Funi to announce the Chapter Black box sets. :p Though I did enjoy the TV episodes for a time, I'm the kind of person who has serious trouble remembering to watch new episodes (the schedule changes didn't help too much in that regard), especially when an alternative is available. And given how I like to marathon this type of show, I figured I might as well have a go at watching Chapter Black and the arc which follows thereafter in big chunks rather than a little bit, week by week. ~Dagger~
 20.
Also, is it licensed anime that is being saturated, or is it anime itself (i.e., even in Japan)? Of course more and more anime series are being licensed because of the increase in popularity, but I've noticed more and more (generic) anime series are being made.[/SIZE']
I've read some doom & gloom predictions regarding the future of the industry in Japan, but in general I'd say the problem with R1 licensed anime is much more noticeable. The fanbase just isn't large enough to continue supporting so many second and third-tier shows. But on the positive side, if the upcoming American debut of Naruto can't invigorate the market and draw in a lot of new fans, nothing will. I agree that there are a lot of mediocre to awful series airing right now--but at the same time, I'm not certain that this hasn't always been the case. And 2004 was a really fantastic year in anime for me... I can't even begin to list all of the new shows I fell in love with. So you win some, you lose some, I guess.
I'm not sure what you just said here, but I think you are saying people who download fansubs tend to not buy DVDs since they already can get the anime for free. I'd argue, if they are that cheap already, what would compel them to buy any anime if they couldn't d/l it? If they don't see it as something worth their $$$ in the first place, would they put some cash down just because they can't obtain it otherwise?
That's a reasonable argument. To branch off of your description, I've encountered quite a few fansub-only watchers who have incredible misconceptions about American anime DVDs (i.e. they think all DVD releases are dub-only and heavily edited like One Piece, and so forth). I don't know how to tell whether they're genuinely ignorant and would buy DVDs of shows they'd already seen (if they knew the material was uncut and came with Japanese audio), or they're merely making excuses.
Care to give a link (or at least a summary)? I haven't heard anything from Cnet, even though I visit Download.com regularly, haha.
Here ya go. Enjoy. ^_^ ~Dagger~
 21. Toonami is only on Saturday nights, right before the Saturday edition of Adult Swim.
May I be so bold as to ask what you are implying here? Are you saying that the altruism of fansubbing is immediately removed the moment a series is licensed, or are you just saying, "Good for them, because now they are in less possible trouble than those who won't stop and therefore can continue to bring us other fansubs."[/SIZE']
More of the latter. With a series this high-profile, I wouldn't be especially surprised if the groups that kept going started to get C&D orders toward the end of the year/early next year (once Naruto begins to air on CN, and the DVDs are announced).
First, you have only five episodes on the first DVD, and then, successive DVDs can have to as little as TWO episodes.
Yeah, if the show in question is called Gantz. :p I have to say, it's understandable if fans feel slightly apprehensive about Viz licensing Naruto (if it really is Viz, and if they plan on sticking to their old ways). Releasing a super-long series like Inuyasha at three episodes per disc is simply unacceptable. They re-worked the episode count for the box set, but ended up giving us even worse video quality in the process. It's ironic, but true, that FUNimation would have been a much preferable option, given how drastically they've improved over the past year or so.
Going back to the DVD thing, I'm most likely not going to buy Naruto. I want to buy it, but if it's released like other anime series, I don't think Naruto is worth 500+ dollars. Dragonball Z was released like that, and I've never heard of people actually owning the entire garbology. On the other hand, if Naruto is boxed by seasons (there are like, five seasons so far), then that's more than doable. Provided that the most per DVD is 30, instead of the usual 20.
Assuming that Viz is in fact the company that's going to be releasing Naruto (as I mentioned before, I'm still vaguely confused about this, what with the merger and the whole "master licensor" business), you can probably expect them to release season box sets. It took two years for them to re-package the first season of Inuyasha in one cheap bundle, but with the series showing on TV during the interim, I imagine the wait for Naruto box sets wouldn't be too painful.
Last, Naruto is going to have a kiddie fanbase. I just know it. Kids don't have money, and if it's going to be released with 100 DVDs, no mother in their right mind is going to buy it.
You'd be surprised, I suspect. Inuyasha's individual DVDs have sold extremely well, and I'd be willing to bet that a lot of that is thanks to kids & preteens mooching off their parents.
Just a side-note: I should also point out how much Viz's translations suck. Senny is a refugee from the manga experience, so he can explain it best. I'm still confused how they managed to pull "Art of the Doppleganger" from "Shadow Clone."
What's bizarre is that some of their translations (particularly for "Shojo" and "Editor's Choice" manga) are exceptionally good. Shonen Jump series are what tend to get screwed over--which makes me fear for Hunter x Hunter, but ah well. Unfortunately, it seems like Naruto, Shaman King, Hikaru no Go, etc. all ended up receiving the short end of the stick. Although I've seen a lot of people hone in on "Art of the Doppleganger" over the past few days, and that kind of surprises me; from what I've gathered, a couple of Viz's other jutsu translations are far more problematic (i.e. "Art of Valentine" or some such nonsense). At least the word doppleganger can reasonably be extrapolated from the original phrase, even if its use demonstrates a bit more.... creativity than one would normally expect from a professional translation. ~Dagger~
 22.
*whispers from afar* Download it... download it... C'mon, it's better to watch it than read a summary. Also, I think, based on the summary, that the same episode aired yesterday or two days ago.
Too much effort. Besides, I've got several other series to catch up on... *glances over at Turn A Gundam and Mai-Hime* Since it's only a single episode, I'll just wait for the pretty, pretty DVDs. ;) Ooh, are they doing weekday reruns or something? I'm totally out of the loop when it comes to CN--all I watch nowadays are new episodes of FMA, and that's just on Saturdays. I guess I'd better start paying more attention to SAC, though, since it should catch up with the DVD release soon. Now that I've heard "Melissa" a fair number of times, I think I prefer it to Ready Steady Go. I was very surprised to learn that there are four different openings & endings! They must change pretty frequently, then. EDIT: Speaking of arm and leg jokes, Elfen Lied has THE best prosthetic limb jokes of any anime I've seen (not that many anime prominently feature prosthetic limb jokes... but, well, you know I mean). Go watch it. :p ~Dagger~
 23.
Well, I did state there should be an option[/B'] to specify your gender. If you felt uncomfortable with that for any reason, or you simply love the thrill of "mystery", then you simply don't specify it.
To me it seemed like you wanted the option to be something visible near the user's every post, just like an avatar or custom title. If what you'd actually prefer is to add an extra category to the "Additional Information" part of your profile (i.e. "Gender," followed by the usual blank space which allows one to either respond seriously, crack a joke or ignore it altogether), then I've no problem with that. ~Dagger~
 24.
Being mistaken for the opposite gender can have funny resulst, most of the time. It would take so much away from OB if we could really know for sure whether Azure was a man or a woman. Besides, who gives a crap? It's the internet.
I'm with Godel. Personally, I always get a huge kick out of being mistaken for the gender I'm not. ;) Anyway, I don't think it's really necessary to distinguish between genders--if it bothers you, there are plenty of places where you can make your own gender clear (i.e. your custom title, your signature and certain parts of your profile). I've been to forums that mark almost every user as male or female (although one can opt out of it, if one so chooses), and for some reason the practice always makes me vaguely uncomfortable. ~Dagger~
 25. Unless you provide further details, the simple fact is that most people here will have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I assume you're referring to an episode arc of a specific anime; however, if you don't even know which anime this episode arc comes from, I doubt you'll be able to get much in the way of additional information. May I suggest Googling the term before seeking out an in-depth response? On a side note, once you do find out what anime you're referring to, please make sure to post your question in that show's pre-existing official thread (assuming, of course, that it has one). As always, feel free to private message me or one of the other moderators if you have any questions. Thanks! ^_^ Thread closed. ~Dagger~
