Bands You Love That None Of Your Friends Have Heard Of
John replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
He was just a guest artist on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School album, he's hardly a member. Handsome Boy Modeling School were just Dan the Automator and Prince Paul.
And Del and Automator did their best work together in Deltron 3030 anyway. :P -
Bands You Love That None Of Your Friends Have Heard Of
John replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
I've been having a recent, but pretty small, foray into '60s-'70s prog rock, consisting mostly of King CrimsonSpooky Tooth, lol. I've barely made a dent into my (maybe torrented ¬¬) King Crimson collection, because I'm going through it chronologically and each album grabs me so much that I won't move past it until I've given it a copious amount of listening XD As for Spooky Tooth, well, they're just a fantastic blues-rock band who wasn't afraid to get a little out there. Incredibly catchy songs. And the rest of the bands (most of which are/were actually pretty popular somewhere in the underground scene, really): -Apocalypse Hoboken (the best punk band that ever has or will exist) -Curve (awesome shoegazer/electro-rock duo) -Del tha Funkee Homosapien (very fun rapper. I need more hip-hop) -The Fall (cool proto-punk band from the late '70s) -Fugazi (post-punk perfected) -Hum (space-rock, very accessible) -Hüsker Dü (oh, come on. Who hasn't heard of Hüsker Dü? :P) -Jawbox (more post-punk. Somewhat lighter in mood than Fugazi) -Kyuss (stoner metal. Rawk on) -Local H (about as close as you can get to un-subgenre'd rock) -The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (ska-core. Again, rawk on) -Morphine (2-string slide bass, drums, saxophone. Figure it out) -Pavement (lords of '90s indie rock) -Pere Ubu ('70s surf rock cattle-branded into art rock and dipped in toxic waste. Amazing) -Shellac (more post-punk) -Swervedriver (sorta shoegazer/post-grunge. Also pretty accessible) -Tally Hall (Tally Hall~!) -Toadies (fantastic post-grunge) -The Velvet Underground (No doubt the name's at least crossed your ears. Commercially unsuccessful but absurdly influential '60s rock band) -Xiu Xiu (lo-fi/ambient indie duo) -
That article requires an account at NY Times to access, so I can't go off of it, but CGI kids' movies haven't had any "edge" to speak of for at least the last ten or so titles. I think we can definitely dismiss the genre as sucked dry now that the writers have gotten to a point where so much creativity is lost that the only new things differentiating one movie from the last are 1) some pathetic new theme that nobody else has gotten around to pulling out of their ***** yet, such as robots or cars, and 2) a title that, almost every time, is simply that theme restated in the most unimaginitive way possible, such as Robots or Cars. Go figure. Put simply: these people have no drive to creat an actual, quality film, because they know the primary audience (or more accurately, the primary money pump) is kids, and kids won't be writing lit papers comparing its characters to protagonists from Moby Dick. As soon as the filmmakers figured this out, they immediately halted every bit of effort in making these things into real, decent films, started slapping together the same brightly-colored ****, and called it a day. I guess at least The Incredibles allowed the whole genre to go out with a bang.

About damn time. Let me amend my signature by saying that this is the only current OB fanfic I'll willingly tolerate (and I would've sworn that I had posted a reply to that effect after the first act...). The whole Mitch-Alex fiasco may be long worn-out by now, but I think that instead of ruining your tragedy, that just turns it into a history. :P
I was just thinking about this and I thought I'd ask all of you. What are your opinions on Twilight Princess launching in December for the Gamecube? The Wii is coming out November 19th (with Twilight Princess as a launch title) which leaves 10-30 days between the launch of the GCN version and the launch of the Wii version. Personally I don't think it was necessary to spread out the dates but at the same time I just don't give a damn. It's obviously just Nintendo's way of trying to get more people to buy a Wii. I know a few people who were angry about this and I'm curious about your opinions.
General rule: nobody has the right to get angry about anything that happens regarding the development time or quality of video games or consoles. There's a big ol' world full of injustice out there, people, and games just don't hold up against it.
That's not entirely true. We have censorship right now. ****, there it is. That's what the FCC is, when you think about it. They exist so that radio stations don't all turn into Howard Stern without the funny. So far, things have been working out relatively well. I don't think it's quite all or nothing; there's certainly some middle ground, and that has benefits that should be considered.
The swear filter only stifles words, not ideas. That's generally harmless, as long as it stays at that, and can actually be useful pretty often (hell, even Jewish scripts censor the true name of God by misspelling it since it's such a sacred word). The FCC is along the same lines, generally. The only censorship worth arguing about (unless someone can come up with another type) is the censoring of ideas, and that's what I was talking about in my post.
We need smart censorship. Not non-existent censorship. Not total absolute censorship. Smart censorship.
Well, sure. But we also need a button that'll fix the environment and a cure for AIDS that propagates through the air at a thousand square miles per hour, scenting everything with lemon as it goes. No matter how much we need smart censorship, it's not plausible. Eventually, those in charge of the censoring will start making decisions with selfish, human motives, and that can't be helped. So no censorship at all has to suffice, unfortunately, and solve what problems it can.

The part at the beginning where it shows the white title screen, flashes to black, then flashes back to white and fades the text in is kinda jolting. I think you could've resolved that by just having it fade very quickly instead. Other than that, pretty slick stuff. Also, I think I have a very vague memory of eating a honeycrisp apple once, and that it was indeed better than any other apple I had ever eaten. Sorry, loser. :D
Who says home remedies cannot be efficient, too? The natural way is actually better for you.[/color']
False. If deriving medical uses directly from plants via an almost trial-and-error process of estimation were better for you than, say, legions of trained medical professionals devoting their lives to pinpointing the exact causes, down to the cell parts, of an affliction, then I feel pretty comfortable that most governments wouldn't hesitate much in revoking those scientists' multi-million dollar budgets. I'm sure there's a few natural alternatives that work just as well or better than their popular medicine counterparts, but that doesn't hold up against the fact that the latter have been exhaustively proven safer and more effective than the former.

I think maturity has a lot to do with the suppression of self-centered instinct, myself. Those primitive impulses telling us to do what is best for us, while necessary for survival in our ancestors, have lost their indispensability in modern men because we've got almost no natural threats to our existences. So instead of needs, this instinct apparently manifests itself in wants nowadays: a man cheating another man out of money, a child crying when he doesn't get the toy he wants, an idiot in your class cutting up to get the attention he craves. I think maturity can be measured, at least partially, by a person's willingness to accept that he doesn't need these things and his ability to not go to unusual lengths to get them.
Nope. It's me! How could it possibly be anyone but me?
I thought about you, but I assumed the overseer of the event wouldn't have been the answer to a riddle D: And unless a shyguy is a grim and gritty assassin (o_O), then I don't know what that part referred to. In conclusion, high fives to Ikillion, and Shy is way too ban-happy.
The last movie that I saw was called Protector. About some Thai protector of elephants. Which is freaking awesome. [spoiler']There is this one scene where he breaks so many bones of like 50 people when they go after him.

Ong Bak: Thai Warrior definitely turned me on to Muai Thai in movies, so if I see this one I'll probably give it a rent. :) The last movie I saw was Silent Movie, a Mel Brooks movie that, as you'd expect, parodied the silent film genre. The gags were sheer genius, and the fact that
the only audible word spoken in the film was said by a mime
was hilarious. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Hah, I remember Z for Zachariah. :P Jericho looks somewhat interesting to me, but I'm also worried it's just a reaction to those other continuous-storyline drama/mysteries out there like 24 and Lost. I'll catch the premiere if I can (though it won't be for a while in America), and if I don't like it then oh well. lol

Given that Shy and White obviously can't accept the overwhelming truth of 42-ness, I'll give them their idea of a "real" answer.
#10
Handsome and witty, Known for an assassin who was quite grim and gritty. Held more titles than should be allowed, Every day he makes OtakuBoards proud.

I'll go ahead and guess Generic NPC #3 (he hasn't been used as an answer yet, has he?). I'd agree that this is indeed Syk3, but the idea of Spike Spiegel as an unusually "grim and gritty assassin" doesn't quite click with me. On the contrary, Tony's repeatedly-used Persona character for RPGs fits that boot quite well, and I also take the use of past tense in "held more titles" to mean a defunct member, which Tony is (well, was, since he apparently came back some time after this riddle was posted). Good luck, all. ^_^
Nintendo Wifi will, apparently, be free to access, but to download the browser you'll have to use Wii-points. ie. Pay. Also, you have to already have a wifi accessable connection, like a wireless router. ...unless, do you guys think they'll have a network plug in the back of the Wii? Either way, you wont get the free online service unless you already have online access. 8)
If you don't have WiFi already (I do, so it's not an issue for me at least), you just have to buy a broadband adapter, and I can't see how cost could really be a big issue in the long run with something like that lol. And the browser is just an optional thing, for using the "normal" 'net. Nintendo's necessary channels will all still be free, and online pay will depend on the developer (I think? Might wanna correct me on that), but by default it's free as well.
Well, since I don't have the money to get 2 next-gen gaming systems, I can only get one. And I chose the 360 over the Wii because of better games and over the Ps3 because of price. And I basically want my 360 just so I can have the joy of playing Halo 3 in high definition. Ah, what a fine January day that will be(I hope). So, as you can tell by my custom title, i'm really anticipating the release of Halo 3.[/color']
Even if I had the financial resources to get a 360, I'd probably stick with the Wii anyway. Not for reasons of the system itself (not entirely, anyway), but because of Wii's presumably free online service. I certainly understand why that type of thing is usually charged for, but if I have the opportunity to get it free, I'll take it in a heartbeat lol. There's something about paying something after you've already paid for it that puts me off, no matter how completely fair it is.

Not completely my style, but the talent's definitely there, and you guys most definitely seem like more than your average Myspace band. Most certainly impressive. If you're really interested in making it, I'd go sign up at Sellaband.com. It's a long shot, sure, but what have you to lose? =)
I'm disappointed about the price of the controllers, though. I wouldn't mind $40 for a remote and[/i'] a nunchuk attachment, but selling them separately for a total of $60? That seems a bit unreasonable, considering GCN controllers were only $30 at launch and Wavebirds $40 new. Especially when a lot of games are going to require the nunchuk. I'm also disappointed that a classic controller isn't included with the system, though I won't mind as much if you can play virtual console games with a GCN controller.
Hey, they had to get their money's worth somehow. And look at it this way: if you get an extra three Wiimotes and nunchuks, you're still paying less than a 360 premium system with only one controller.
With that being said, I haven't been keeping tabs on much either. So what exactly is Wii Sports? The maddens, Nba's, and whatnot? It's a 1st time for me hearing that type of talk. Because I don't hear people saying anything about sony sports, or microsoft sports...[/size']
Wii Sports is a cartoony-styled package of small games of various sports, made primarily to showcase the Wiimote's abilities and, presumably, get gamers used to using it. Nevertheless, they're supposedly still full-on games, so it should be a perk to have as a pack-in. I just watched a Red Steel video from the link Charles gave, and I'm pretty disappointed in it so far, surprisingly. The character had almost zero turning ability, for some reason, the models looked pretty stiff, and the HUD was just flat-out ugly (plus, they never used the ghetto rotated-Wiimote side-angled gun position! For shame!). However, it's not a completed game, and I'm sure (or hoping) that they recognize the first and last of these problems, and will iron them out before the release. Anybody know just how far along Red Steel's development is, anyway?

C'mon guys, I'm kinda disappointed in you all. The answer to each of these should be incredibly obvious, since it's the same for every one: 42.
P.S. I also found this on Google. Not sure if it's fan-made or not but would that not be the coolest Wii-cessory ever?[/font']
I'll bet that's a fan-made example. Since the nunchaku attachment doesn't have motion sensing, that shield attachment would be utterly useless (and mere cosmetics wouldn't make up for that bulking mass, lol). And I've got a hard time believing that that Master Sword wouldn't be way too heavy to plug into the end there (not to mention the designers would be more likely to fit the controller into a sleeve in the hilt, as has been the trend in Wii accessories so far), and really, it wouldn't serve any purpose either anyway. All in all, the whole idea of it comes way too close to LARP for me to go anywhere near it. And by the way, if words like "Wii-cessory" actually start becoming popular, I am holding you personally accountable. >:(
For the love of all that is unloved, Sony are idiots. And annoying ones at that. European PS3 release date delayed... Oh well, so much for a worldwide November release. Surely it's all but official at this stage that Sony are completely and totally useless. There's the 4-month-delayed EU release, and - apparently - they're only going to manage to dish out 400,000 PS3's for Autumn/Fall in the US. Before this, I still had some hope for the PS3, but now there's no doubt about it. Nintendo are going to completely whoop them. Woo.
I think you're looking at this from quite the wrong point of view. Delaying the PS3's release date was probably the smartest and most benevolent thing Sony's done yet, and frankly, as an American, I'm quite jealous of your extended four PS3-free months.

Do all the people involved in this generally know each other? If not, and you really wanna have some fun with this, I'd start going by different aliases so they can't even get your name in the first place. I suppose you should also change up the routes you take to and from your classes frequently, and walk in a large circle frequently if you think anyone is following you.
