anyway, did bratz ever fight each other, i mean physically?
Maybe somewhere on youtube or deviant art. But sadly never in a show/ Well except for Girls Really Rock- Yes I watched that on Nick a few weeks ago- sadly no fist fights. Although these twins called the 'Tweevils' have punched eachother a few times. BUt I would love to see the Bratz beat eachother up. Maybe I'll do that with the Bratz dolls my friend is giving to my daughter for the sole purpose of her destroying them. As for Barbie- in the doll's defense she was created from a German doll called Bild Lili who enjoyed the good life and would do anything to get it and was sold as a gag gift for the man who had everything. In the past fifty years she's been everything from a Mod Teen to a Rockstar to a Vet and an Airline Pilot. And she's actually got accessories that you can buy separately and different outfits unlike the Bratz where you have to buy a new friggin' doll for every new outfit! Sorry but the single mom on a budget here is definately not made out of money- stress maybe, but not money. Concerning the Bratz and Barbie in the Toy Museum- they're mostly there to show different toys played with through the years, different trends and mile stones things like that. Just a few rows down from Bratz and Barbie are a shedload of antique doll houses and an exhibit called: When Barbie Dated GI Joe Growing Up in the Cold War Era. It goes through different parts of life from Post WW2 to the Cold War and Vietnam. Really if any of you ever end up in Rochester you should check out the Strong Museum (If it's any selling point you can play Wii and DDR there for free)
I also remember one image sticking with me the most out of all the other horrifying ones. It wasn't people covered in the dust of the towers or the towers themselves coming down, it was the walls and walls of missing person pictures strewn endlessly everywhere.
If someone thinks this is off topic- I'm sorry. But it's interesting that you mention all the pictures of the missing that were posted. George Eastman House had a huge exhibit a few months after the attacks which included a lot of the pictures taken during the attacks. Some were shrunk down and put into some kind of mosaic to represent the WTC and the Pentagon. I'd also like to point out that there are memorials all over the place for 9/11- back in 2003 I was in Las Vegas with my family and there was a large memorial and a timeline in front of the New York New York. It was pretty moving- and quite noticeable- I don't know if they still have it though. Also I would like to add that back in May I went to visit a friend of mine in Albany and we ended up at the Museum of New York History in Albany. Right now-and I don't know how long it's been there or will be there- they also have an exhibit for the World Trade Center and 9/11. They have all sorts of things from a public telephone that was melted from the blast to scattered papers from Ground Zero- a license plate from a vehicle that was there and even a steel girder from one of the towers. This of course is along with a lot of pictures and kind of a time line. It's really something else to be able to look at objects recovered from the scene- it gives you a whole different perspective on the whole thing- although not as major as if you were there or even in one of the five burroughs on the day.
Actually I'm using 'we' to encase all Americans of voting age, why would I include those that can't vote? I'm sorry but when governments do things that the people allow, it is a responsibility of the people to rectify it. We may have been cheated out of an election, but we also allowed it to continue.
This CHW was of legal voting age in 1999 Technically we're not allowing Bush to do anything, everything he's done he's done reguardless of the thoughts or feelings of others. There have been countless protests which prove that we don't approve of what our government is doing right now. Hell right now Bush has an approval rating at about 38% so that should tell you right now that not very many people really want what's happening to happen. So you can't really blame an entire country- including the voting population- for what's happening in our government. What you can do though is get your happy butt up out the door in November and vote to make a difference.

Anime Which series grabbed you from the start?
ChibiHorsewoman replied to Nekova's topic in Otaku Central
InuYasha. To be fair I fist got into this anime in the manga version thanks to a friend of mine- my friends always lead me astray I'm telling you!- and it was just such a mix of funny and drama and romance I loved it. It took me a while to actually understand Kikyo because like most fans who ship one certain pairing they tend to place some extreme loathing on the competition and since Kikyo was also constantly
trying to kill either InuYasha or Kagome or both at the same time and had helped Naraku obtain some jewel shards
I couldn't help but hate her at first . However after finally seeing Tragic Love Song of Destiny I decided that Kikyo wasn't such a bad person. I mean it's not like she wanted to be reincarnated. I'm still watching the show and a few months ago I got one of my friends into it as one of her first anime- after Full Metal Alchemist of course -
If you really have it in your head to blame someone how about blaming the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) They had years to find a way to prevent people being able to bring on guns, knives and oh yeah, box cutters but they didn't. After one failed inspection they reportedly told the inspector that the 'perception of security was an adaquate enough deterant for domestic traffic.' Sorry but adaquate doesn't fly well with me- especially after this. It's ironic, but in some ways we have the terrorists to thank for us being able to fly safer in the skies.

Okay so we're going to start this now? Fun. Before I start: Gelgoog Pilot- I'm sorry for your loss. I've a second cousin who is a first responder with his local fire department and if he'd lived down in Manhattan at the time he would have died too. That said, I don't think I can agree with the fact that we've voted for the government we have. We voted for a government that we thought we would get but what we received is a far cry from what we deserve. In 2000 when Bush was elected there was and still is a lot of questioning about how he'd managed to win and the problem with the voting machines in Florida- I still refuse to believe that was a coincidence. In 2004 the reason Bush was re-elected was a combination of a poor democratic nominee and the fact that in many southern 'Bible Belt' states there was a law to vote on at the polls that would define marriage as only between a man and a woman- that brought out a lot of conservatives and therefore a lot of votes for Bush. All we have in Washington right now is a bunch of people who don't seem to realize that they're running this country into the ground and the few who do realize it don't have enough power to stop everyone else. The American people are pretty much screwed over until we can elect a better government. That said I don't believe that the American people as a whole are responsible for the autrocities that happened on 9/11. In my humble opinion that's almost like saying that the American people are responsible for Pearl Harbor because the War Department refused to accept Japan's declaration of war because it wasn't in English. Ugh- I'll type more when I'm not ticked off.
Yes she did, on the day it happened, their initial reaction to the event itself, not what they thought once the shock was over. If someone's reaction was to think that, then they would have done well to notice the last part in the opening post about honoring the dead. Taking pot shots saying we had it coming isn't the way to honor anyone.
I've no problem with honouring the dead and I don't believe that anyone should have died or that we deserved this. No one deserves to get burned to death or have to jump out of a burning building because the death upon impact is more instantanious than incineration. It was a sick terrible thing that took many lives needlessly. Friends of my family lost their nephew because of the attacks my aunt and uncle though they'd lost their daughter and for twelve to thirteen hours my friend thought she'd lost her mom. Many people were impacted by those events in more ways than one and for much longer than 9/11/01- did you know that in all five burroughs the schools were closed for more than a week because of all the dust and debris in the air? My friend from Brooklyn told me that because of her asthma her mom made her wear a surgical mask for months whenever she went outside. 9/11 is definately a day I will never forget to remember to honor the dead and be thankful to be alive. PS On the one year anniversary of the attacks my ex husband and I along with millions of others gave the terrorists the collective finger and got on an airplane to go somewhere (in my case Texas) The planes and the airports were crammed.
Danger Will Robinson. This thread wasn't designed for a 'well we had it coming' standpoint. Please do not turn this into a place to talk about that.
Well you did ask what people were thinking didn't you? Not trying to start with anyone nor do I agree with what Gelgoog Pilot is saying- I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I don't think it's fair to say that we had it coming, but it is fair to say that we've been trying to play the world's police for too long and someone got fed up with it. It's just a shame that so many people had to lose their lives so needlessly.

Bloody in the UK term not blood gorey. I was forced by my daughter who speaks no Italian to watch the Winx Club movie on youtube and it was definately one of the worst things I've ever seen- it was like a 90 minute episiode that was more stuff about the main character with a bunch of flat asexual computer animation. So thanks to that movie you all are getting this thread. Please realize that we're not attacking movies or people so if I say I didn't like Blair Witch don't jump down my throat about it. Something that I could understand but also didn't like was Water Boy- okay yes I realize it was an Adam Sandler movie and going into those you shoudln't expect much, but it was terrible! I haven't watched it in years and I still remember how bad it was. Yeah, Well now I have to go but I'll put more later
I can't help it... I got sick of people telling me "Babies come from heaven!" a;dfasjfdalksdf!!!
That comment just made me LOL a little. I have a book called 'Why Was I Adopted' that my parents read to me when I was about my daughter's age to explain why I was adopted. One explaination was that maybe the parents were in heaven and showed some goofy looking people sitting on clouds and reading tha paper.Of course the book also explained that adopted kids weren't found in a cabbage patch nor were they bought in a grocery store. Which for a while is what my mom told me. :animeswea And back to the topic: I think I lucked out with the sex talks- kinda. I was still in school during the Clinton administration so I escaped the laws passed about teaching abstinence only in school. Plus my parents may be Catholic, but my mother also survived being molested by a relative so she didn't want me to end up feeling scared the way she was so she always made it a point to tell me that I can talk to her about anything no matter what and she'd believe me. She also got into the whole what's the difference between boys and girls when I was in second grade and made sure that my brother and I knew about condoms and birth control. So even though my health teacher kinda forgot to talk about a few things aside from STDs I didn't go away from sex ed ignorant. That may be one of the many failings of Abstinence only education. Parents assume that their children will still get the same comprehensive (or close to it) sex ed classes that they did and since they're probably a little emberassed to have the 'sex talk' (Why wasn't my mom? Damn did that get icky) they don't check to make sure that their kids know what they should know about sex.Meanwhile the school systems are doing the bare minimum or not even and teachers are hoping or expecting the parents to fill in the gaps. What you really seem to have here is a total lack of communication.
I kind of lucked out in that respect though. o_O Aaryanna is a curious kid and used the library and the Internet to figure all that out when she was eleven. I had planned on having that talk with her when she turned twelve.
Looks like she got the jump on you- my mom took me for my first Gyno appt and to get my first oral contraceptives when I was 19 then told me just because she was doing this doesn't mean she was advocating having sex, she just wanted to make sure I was prepared. Oh yeah Aaryanna_Mom. I have at the very least two years before my daughter starts to ask questions like where do babies come from and then later sex stuff. She's already had to have the death talk because my dad accidentally ran over my cat. But aside from the usual well either when two peole think they're ready they either have sex and try to have a baby or if you don't think you're ready then don't I have no idea what to say to her. Any ideas?

What was the most disgusting thing you've tasted?

I'm boring so after my story I'll tell you my friend Samma's story- she's from Brooklyn so she's much more interesting. Okay so I was twenty and home from work because I had some kind of virus and needed to get checked out before I could go back the next day. So I was sitting in my front room waiting for my mom to come pick me up and I didn't have the TV on because I didn't want to get engrossed in something. My mom comes bursting through the front door and says: 'Meg, don't you have the TV on?" and I'm like 'No why would I?" and she says: Something bad happened So me being me I thought it was an earthquake in California. Boy was I surprised, the very first plane had hit the World Trade Centre Anyways after that my mom and I drove downtown to my dr appointment and while we're driving there is no music on the stations just news and when we reach the exit for the hospital the second tower is hit. When my mom and I get inside the Dr's office everyone is talking about it and while I'm getting some blood work done the Pentagon is hit. Fun eh? I was getting calls all day one from my friend Becky who was at MCC when it happened- she wanted to make sure I was okay since my ex husband was in Korea at the time and had only been there for two weeks. I got a call from him later to say he was fine- he was worried about me (which ya know is BS) and how he'd gone down in Full battle rattle when they'd made the announcement. So the rest of the day we're wondering about my cousin Lynn who was living in Brooklyn and worked at a pre-school in Manhattan- later we found out she's fine, but the pre-school she worked at was two blocks from ground zero so she had to evacuate with a lot of toddlers. And we're watching the news and my mom won't even let me go up to the grocery store to get the special edition paper- I don't even know what my brother was thinking at the time. He was a junior in High School and is a lot more sensitive than I am. I also talked to one of my other cousins who was living outside of Boston- she said she'd actually gone to church which was very out of character for her. But the part I remember the most is how quiet it was that night. I live near the interstate and about ten miles from the Rochester International Airport so it's a busy flight zone and you can hear cars at all hours of the night. That night it was so quiet because all flights were grounded and there were hardly any cars out on the road. I guess I was frightened and worried for my ex (who at the time was my fiance :animeswea) at first. The next morning I woke up and before I went to work I went into my brother's room and just stared at this poster he had called Facades of New York because there was a picture of the Twin Towers on it. But then when I went into work the next day my supervisor freaked me out by asking me every twenty minutes if I was okay. So by lunch (I used to work from 6:30-2:30 in a cafeteria) my nerves were getting frayed. I think I snapped at her. And on my drive home from work I heard End of the Innocence by Don Henley and had to pull over because I was crying too hard. For a while it was nice because there was all this patriotism and pride in the country. But then about two weeks after the attack my friend Amanda and I were driving through one of the parks here and we saw some rednecks (yes we have those here in Western New York) with a large plywood sign on their pickup (way to live up to the Cliche) that said 'Death To the Towel Heads' in large red letters. And that just pissed me off. I was sickened to think that people would go off on another group of people just because it was said that a group of Muslim EXTREMISTS had gone off the deep end. My friend and I yelled at them and drove off and kept on talking about how ignorant some people are- I mean don't they realize Muslim's died in the attacks too? So I think that about sums up my feelings: Fear, pride, annoyance and outrage. It's interesting that you came up with this topic. I was talking to my friend down in Brooklyn today- she was in 4th grade when the attacks happened and her school had to be evacuated because of the smoke- she went home with a friend since she didn't know whether her mom was alive or dead and didn't find out until 9:30 that night after she'd come home from walking over the Brooklyn bridge. After that the schools in Brooklyn were closed for a week because of all the smoke and the fact that a lot of kids there had lost someone. Even after the attacks my friend was saying that she had to go out with a surgical mask over her face- even when she went to visit family in Queens.
While it's a woman's body, a baby born or not is it's own person. Being an insane knuckle dragging right wing totalitarian, I believe that human life starts at conception and don't need to tell you that it's "above my pay grade" to believe it completely. Maybe it's because I was raised Christian, maybe it's because six women in my family have gotten pregnant out of wedlock and chose to keep their baby or give it up for adoption every time. Call me crazy.
I consider myself to be a moderate, but I also believe that dispite the fact that growth does indeed start right at conception (My grandma was pro-life and had one of those 10 day old embryo foot prints or whatever) I still believe that it is the woman's body and it's her right to choose what she does with it. That said I can't see myself actually going through with an abortion. It's either becase I was raised Catholic or because I am a woman, or because I'm adopted and I do believe that everyone deserves a shot at life- unless ther are major risks involved (stretchmarks are not a risk) like the mother's life. Or in cases of rape or incest. You do have to agree that carrying your rapist's baby to term would have some psychological damage
I believe abortion itself is a state's right's issue and I'm not going to advocate for the abolishment of the procedure. However I do have concerns about how some women are using it as its own form of birth control, some are given abortions without proper medical and psychological counseling beforehand, and babies that are sometimes born alive healthy or not are simply killed. Abortion is the most unregulated medical procedure in America today thanks to Planned Parenthood and American society's pathological fear of telling feminists and pro-abortionists that they need to be careful with how abortion is pitched.
Hey when the state government stops cutting funding for daycare maybe then I'll decide to allow them to put their rules on my body, but for right now no. But I do agree that some women do use abortion as a form of birth control and that is wrong in many ways. Once you've gone to the point where something is growing in you you've past the point of contraception- well except for emergency contraception- but that can only be used in the first 48 hours. That's why younger generations have to be taughter earlier about other methods of birth control besides abstinence.
Before you tell me that it's religious groups that are to blame, there are plenty of people who believe the same things Christians do without being crazy zealots for abstinence. They're referred to I believe as 'moral people.' I believe in holistic sex education. Yes, teach about STDs, teach about proper use of birth control methods and tell people about their effectiveness HONESTLY. But also remind them that it is only Abstinence that will ensure you never get a pregnancy or a disease or any other kind of lasting psychological trauma. People who write off abstinence as foolish to teach because teenagers and now even children [they're teaching it younger and younger, just ask my 10 year old brother] don't have self control are selling them and the future of America short.
I don't blame religious groups as a whole- I blame the current administration for their policy of only giving government funding to schools that teach an abstinence only curriculumn and for firing teachers who talk about anything not covered in that curriculumn. It's not immoral to teach kids about sex and the fact that there are risks involved and it's not immoral to say that you don't have to abstain. It is immoral to prevent students from getting properly educated about contraception and safe sex practices. Yes, abstinence is the only sure way to avoid getting STDs and HIV/AIDS (which BTW is not a pretty thing near the end- I've done hospice and recently lost one of my patients to AIDS) but condoms do a pretty good job at preventing STDs if used properly and the sure do prevent those pesky abortions along with contraceptives. I'm not going to tell my daughter in ten years to go out and get laid or whatever, but I'm not going to tell her that sex is a bad thing either.
I find that statement to be highly contradictory. Perhaps you can explain it better?
Yes I can. Being pro choice for me means that you don't oppose a woman's right to choose an abortion but you don't think you'd do the same thing. There are other options than just having an abortion, such as adoption. There are millions (maybe not- I haven't done research on that) of couples waiting to adopt a child and they spend a lot of money on lawyers waiting for someone to be willing to give their child up. I don't find the statement contradictory in the least
@ CHW: If you claim that the program doesn't work, what do you believe is the intent of the program? Provide us this so that we may see if your concept lines up, and so determine if it is indeed failing at its goal.
Fair enough. From what I understand (I haven't been in school since 2000 and my daughter is only three going on four and wouldn't understand even the most basic sex talks except maybe the whole it's your body don't let anyone touch it) the abstinence only programs only teach students about abstaining from sex and the failure rate of condoms. There is nothing said about contraceptives or proper safe sex. It's just said that sex is bad and you shouldn't do it. Which in my humble opinion is stupidity in itsself. Yes sex is a big step. But It's not a bad thing- it's not a sin- and that's what many of these classes are saying. Teaching abstinence only would be a wonderful idea if teenagers were all in bubbles and you could stop and think in the moment of passion wait, we shouldn't do this. But that's not the world we live in. OKay so now I've said my piece, I know you're dying to explain to me exactly what you think about the whole thing since you've scolded me twice for not agreeing with abstinence only. Tell me, why do you think it works?

But I don't think I ever ate a bug :o -
Well in some ways I almost resemble Kino Makoto from Sailor Moon. According to the Japanese version we're both the same height (five feet five inches) and we both have green eyes. But right now I have short dark red hair and no bangs. If I were to be an anime/manga character I think I'd probably end up looking almost like I do now but my hair would be more of a dark red violet than it does now and I could set things on fire (I would really love to be able to do that sometimes- or just make people go mute) If there wasn't the possibility of fire I guess I'd have to go for the whole shojo manga thing. Right now I have this interest in the middle ages and have been trying to work on a story involving a healer and a knight- yeah because I'm over worked and have been listening to Hand of Sorrow on eternal repeat in my head. So maybe that's the type of anime/manga I'd be in. Eh don't mind me- I'm on an AIM convo with a friend in Brooklyn going over 9/11 stuff
