Interesting... So far it would appear that most who are voting agree with my PRO-VILLIAN stance. Yet there would also appear to be a sizable amount of 'it depends...' Perhaps from this point on those posting should specify 'good heroes' e.g. Tenchi, 'bad heroes' e.g. Spike, 'good villians' e.g. Treize, or; 'bad villians' e.g. Kagato. With me, I'm not sure myself which type of villian I prefer, the stereotypical 'bad villian' is an important part of more simple anime like Pokemon. Yet the more complex 'good villian' is better for more complicated anime, like Gundam Wing. In the end I'd probably err on the side of 'bad villian' - just because you've got to have the old irredeemable, manical laughing villian sometimes - just to remember that some things should never change in anime.

There are several of these detailed and listed in the easter egg section of www.CheatUnion.com - though it is far better just to experiment and find them yourself of course (but that's often a time-consuming and futile).

It's got to be Trieze and Lady/Colonel Une for me, from Gundam Wing. Two so incredibly complex people with similar beliefs, if peculiar courtship, who seem to keep pace with one another with progressing from evil to good. Hard to say if Trieze preferred evil or good Une (with glasses or without).

Heero (Gundam Wing): 'This is stolen - what're you gonna do about it' Akito (Martian Successor Nadesico): 'Let's Go Gekigengar III!' Trieze (Gundam Wing): 'I eat mobile dolls for breakfast' Kagato (Tenchi Muyo & Universe): 'I brake for nobody'

Which do you prefer character-wise out of villains or heroes in anime? Give details on why you voted for the one you did, and examples from your favorite series. I vote for villains, just because they always seem so much more intelligent, elegant and powerful, and often complex. This contrasts with the gung-ho, scruffy, weaker-seeming and open heroes. Great examples are Trieze and Une from Gundam Wing contrasted with Relina and Duo; and Kagato from Tenchi Muyo! and Tenchi Universe contrasted with Tenchi and most of his gang.

Anime which cartoon do you prefer out of..
ElrickOtaku replied to Anime`babe's topic in Otaku Central
I'd go with Gundam. For me it has just the right balance of action, complex characters and plot. All the politics and ethics and so on might bore some people (plus of course some, e.g. Relina might make you HATE some characters) but for me they just add to its charm. After all in almost any anime there are parts some like, and parts some hate. -
What is your favorite anime quote and why - give details. My favorite is part of my signiture below, but all the Tenchi series contain some great quotes. This one is my favorite as it was one which Tenchi said just after Ryoko started to attack him at school, following his inadvertedly freeing her from the shrine. It's my favorite as it just sums up the desperate, but somehow inappropriate, thought of a young schoolboy fearing for his life. PLEASE NOTE: No short spamming here - give good quotes with context - and WHY its your favoured quotation.

I live in the UK where the Region 2 only really anime dvds come from ADV, MVM or Manga. They also cost about £20 or more for 3-4 episodes on each dvd, so those of you in the US should just be glad of the choice. In any case, ADV dvds always seem to have plenty of extras on them - trailers, textless opening and closing credits, character bios, translator's notes and more. So if you buy from a good company, you'll get your extras...at a price.

I've seen this series as well as EVA, and enjoyed both so much that I bought the dvd collections of both. Gasaraki is a superb series, its deep (if confusing) plot is incredible, as are the characters and animation. The mechs in this series are even pretty realistic (well...the TAs and FAKEs at least, not the Kugai). A lot of people complain about the confusing plot and usual slow pace of action, but if you are a big fan of dark anime dramas, the this is almost the definitive one for it. But a warning - this is ONLY for those who like dark dramas, not those Excel Saga or Tenchi afficionados, unless you're a drama AND comedy fan - like me. So, give the series time and you might find it facinating...or else you will just find it boring and/or confusing...that's actually an occasionally heard comment about EVA in fact, so it's up to your own tastes.

Anime if you could be an anime character what would you look like?
ElrickOtaku replied to edward-tivrushy's topic in Otaku Central
I'd go for the typical anime villian look: >Tall >Thin >Silver hair >Dark eyes >Sword (mostly unused) >Black uniform with long cape >Slow intimidating movement - after all I wouldn't be doing the fighting...my expendible minions would Basically; tall, pale, elegant, but above all...INTIMIDATING. -
One of my favorite anime characters is Trieze Kushrenada from Gundam Wing. If I met him I'd probably talk to him and try and work out whether or not he is REALLY good or evil, as it was so unclear towards the end of Gundam Wing. My most hated anime character is Gendo Ikari from EVA, if I met him I'd probably yell at him for being such a bad parent and hit him a few times to get the point across, I mean for God's sake, how much of a cold, evil man can you be in one lifetime?

I just like this exchange in Dragonball Z - "I'm not going to transform unless I get a countdown." "What? Are you crazy?" "I'm waiting..." "Fine... 123456789... happy?" -- Freeza and Vegeta

I have to say I'm a traditionalist when it comes to manga, so I'd say the best manga is Akira. Yeah, it's long and expensive, but the plot is just so deep and the action is just constantly hitting the reader. Even the characterisation is just incredible, with the Rebel-Hero Kaneda and the twisted-villian Tetsuo, it's just impossible to beat. Unless you hate drama, in which case Tenchi is probaby better.

I'd agree that Evangelion is an excellent anime series, but it is not THE GREATEST. Martian Successor Nadesico is the best anime of all time. It combines all the best elements of other series, i.e. mechs, space battles, one man - many women comedy, complex plot, dramatic deaths of important characters, etc. This does not make it unimaginative, it just makes it an incredible hybrid. QED it is the greatest anime series of all time - even the Japanese have voted as such.
-
I'd say Trieze Kushrenada is the most complex. This is as he seems so cold and evil and the start, yet when he's given the opportunity to rule the world he refuses it. Plus his morality comes out with his opposition to the mobile dolls, and the resulting Treize Faction civil war. So in the end was he more good or evil, bearing in mind his revalations to Wufei. You have to judge for yourself. Now THAT'S complex!

Anime What is your favorite gundam/character?
ElrickOtaku replied to Belldandy Angel's topic in Otaku Central
I actually liked Trieze and his later Tallgeese model. Until the Altron destroyed it, it was pretty amazing in the Battle of Earth. Its a pity Zechs refused to duel with him as that would have been a battle REALLY worth seeing. -
I've found that Gasaraki is an underrated anime. This was a great, if a bit dark and dramatic series that used to be on Sci-Fi channel. A great series but so deep and dramatic that it seems like a sort of 'aquired taste' in anime.

Anime has really changed me, in two ways. The first was that it made me really think about some issues, like politics and military ethics from Gundam Wing, as well as religious matters from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Plus, it rejuvinated my social life. Before I was in danger of becoming a dark loner, but watching this stuff and joining the local society for it rescued me. Plus of course watching humerous anime, like Tenchi, helped my sence of humour along.

The series Martian Successor Nadesico was voted by the Japanese as one of the greatest anime series of all time and includes one of the funniest mecha spoofs of all time, Gekigengar III. Yet it seems to be rarely mentioned, there arn't even many devoted Nadesico sites. This is probably my favorite anime, with space battles, ethical questioning, Tenchi Muyo syndrome (one man - many women), superb plot and characters. It might not be that original, but it is an incredible hybrid of many different elements. Yet is it anyone else's favorite anime? If so, why?
-
I love the music from Martian Successor Nadesico; especially the opening and closing themes; 'You Get To Burning' and 'Watashi Rashiku'. The music is just so polished and upbeat that it's impossible NOT to like it. The Gekigengar theme, 'Let's Go Gekigengar III!' is also great, as an entertaining mecha music spoof. I also like the Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop soundtracks, especially 'Kitto OK' (upbeat) and 'The Real Folk Blues' (deep).

Trieze Kushrenada - A spacesuit so he could have survived in the penultimate episode of Gundam Wing. The Musaki Household - A crate of sake, she seem to drink enough of it in Tenchi Muyo. Akito Tenkawa - A permanant job as a cook, anything to allow him to escape from the girls on board the Nadesico. Gene Starwind - A load of caster shells, with the way he and the others from the Outlaw Star constantly get attacked, he'd find a use for them.

I certainly would'nt want Mihoshi, the Galaxy Police screw-up as a roommate. This is as she seems to have destroyed or at least damaged Tenchi's and other peoples houses constantly. I mean just in Episode 1 of Tenchi Universe she blows the doorway away while in her heavy weapons suit. This does not indicate a good partnership. Things just get worse when she moves in with poor old Kiyone...
-
I'd probably go for Kiyone from Tenchi Universe, the capable police officer. This is as it would be great to be with someone intelligent and good looking. But only if she ever manages to ditch Mihoshi (the screw-up police officer), as its dnagerous to be around her. Other than that Lady Une would be good to date. Yet this would be after she went into space and mellowed out, i.e. non-glasses Une. This is as, again, she's intelligent and good-looking; but also she actually has aims and fights for good in the end.

Anime What Anime has the best opening theme?
ElrickOtaku replied to Lone Bebop's topic in Otaku Central
I would say that Martian Successor Nadesico has the best opening theme, 'You Get To Burning'. The fanstastic trumpet solo at the start of it alone, makes it impressive. The ending theme, 'Watashi Rashiku' is great too, as unlike most ending theme it retains the sheer energy and light-heartedness of the series.
