Censorship is really a fuzzy topic to cover because their is no clear definition of what is really damaging to the public. There is a theorhetical limit as to what people can see, but what's obscene to me may not be obscene to you. The definition that the US Supreme Court gave on obscene content is that " anything that lacks artistic, social or scientific value." :animestun Yeah, that's another example of trying to define a really gray area in black and white terms, not possible. I personally think that the film shouldn't be removed from theatres. Believe it or not, all of C.S. Lewis's works have some sort of athiestic commentary within them and even books like the Narnia series are no exception. Look at the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; it was one of the highest grossing movies a couple of years ago. Did children who watched it carry the archetypal figures within the movie? Certainly not. They liked it for a different reason. The same applies with the Golden Compass. People are gonna watch it regardless of content, because they are interested in that sort of thing anyways. No one has the right, besides the government, to censor this film. It's like me trying to remove it from the theater because it interferes with my beliefs. It's a case of trying to help a few while ostracizing the masses. Kind of along the same thread as saying "Happy Winter Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" to keep from harming our brothers and sisters who are of a different religion. As far as ratings go, that's really a case of industry self regulation. It was put in place to keep the government out of the movie industry. Same goes with video games and music. It's really put in place to keep the consumers informed on what they're buying and that product may not be for all types of people. Many congressmen and politicians have tried to take this media off the shelves entirely, but ultimately they've made little progress. Which is a good thing, because many people are capable of making their own decisions. When Columbine came and went, they wanted to blame the video game and music industries for making those kids shoot up the school, when they had little to do with it at all. People make conscious decisions to do what they do, no matter what it may be. I think that media can influence the human consciousness, but only if we want it to.
I think Haruhi Suzumiya (from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) touched on that. She wondered what the point of life was if nothing she did was unique. But if you don't try to be different...try to break the mold in some way progress will stop. And when progress stops...bad things happen. Life stagnates. Life becomes meaningless. So really (I know you said this in the first post but I feel I should repeat it) there is no such thing as being mainstream or individualism. If a thing exists there is someone else who feels the same as you about it somewhere period. Forgive me if I been completely redundant or nonsensical.
I don't exactly get the thing where you say "...try to break the mold in some way progress will stop. And that's bad (paraphrase)" Kind of contradictory. I think you meant to say "try to break the mold in some way where progress won't stop." I wouldn't wanna break the mold if it meant stopping progress as a race. I'm one tiny roadbump and wouldn't be very effective anyways. ;) I think people try to put those terms "mainstream" and "individual" in order to describe the terms in some minute way that doesn't even scratch the surface of the topic in any sort of way. It's hard to really describe human behavior in any sort of way, because it's erratic at best. Just when we think we have it pinned down, humans develop something else.

The Obligatory "Haul" Thread
Korey replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in General Discussion
Sangria huh? Sounds fun! Glad you had a good time Steph. I got to hang out with my GF all Christmas long and that was one of my favorite gifts. As for material things I got.... 3 Long sleeved T shirts 1 Digital Camera Tekken Dark Resurrection for PSP Sonic Rivals for PSP 1 New Mexico State University T Shirt 1 1GB memory card for my camera 1 Peyton Manning Jersey DDR Supernova 2 for PS2 I basically watched movies all day long. I slept through Hairspray (much to my GF's chagrin), I also watched Live Free or Die Hard and Bring it On: In it to Win it, which for my money, is the most BLATANT rip off of West Side Story I've ever encountered in my life. It was corny, it was stupid and I probably lost brain cells because of it.:animesigh -

So I'm like...yeah I need to test out my new camera and stuff...and so I took a pic of me winking and my camera and some junk and here's how it came out... Total myspace picture :p -
Those were the only parts of the first post I bothered to look at. I just read a few posts from other members, and took the rest from there. So I ignroed the middle and took it as 'uneeded fat.'
I can see why you would think that Prem...and I tend to skim through others posts as well, but nowadays, and ESPCIALLY with this thread, you kind of need to read the whole thing before you jump to rash judgements and post something that it is a little bit one sided ^_~. We all read the headlines and endings of a news story, but if you wanna learn something, you gotta dig into the "uneeded fat". It's good for your soul, if not for your body....(my jokes are really corny and complicated) I'm not upset at all that you didn't read my posts. Actually, you guys provide me the fire I need to keep on trucking and try to make my point more clear.
It's worth asking more about it, though. Would - for example - a Roman soldier or a 14th century French peasant understand what we mean by "mainstream" and "individual," or even about tastes and lifestyles (as we use the words) in general? Of course we can talk about the soldier being born in a certain family and having a certain place in the imperial order, but that doesn't quite sound like a lifestyle. The peasant might enjoy one kind of wine and hate another, but that's not quite the same as what we mean whenever we talk about likes and dislikes. The terms don't seem to fit the situation somehow, and it's not just because we on this board have "cultural differences" with them. Why is it that the soldier and the peasant don't work for this model? If we thought about it a little, we might come up with a simple answer: we today choose for ourselves, and that is why we can have tastes and lifestyles. It's not that the soldier and peasant have no freedom at all, but their possibilities (and their knowledge of them) are quite limited. We, on the other hand, stand before and within a worldwide network of information. We have a whole planet in our grasp. A practically limitless mass of products, occupations, ideas, and choices in general are offered to our attention; to be sure, we are still reined in by our biological, social, and economic circumstances, but even those limitations can eventually be shattered by the power of modern thought.
Good point there, brining the history element into it. We do indeed have more choices for ourselves to make in this modern era, yet I have to bring in a contridictory element to the argument (although it was well put together). Modern thought does exceed that of Roman era thought, but there are still places within our world in this Modern Era where the individual free will is still supressed heavily due to religious backgrounds. Case in point, the nation of India. Within that nation, you are stuck within a Caste system, where your social standing is fixed upon you before your birth, based on where your family was on the social food chain. You are stuck doing whatever job you were "meant" to perfrom and there was no way to escape your destiny unless you did good deeds and got reincarnated into a higher caste. A sad existence for some, but it proves my point. We aren't to the point yet where the individual is the main focus. Will we ever get there? Probably not in this lifetime, not even the next. But it's important to strive for these things, because the minute we stop trying to be individuals our human race will become bland and rehashed.
The condition for being either "mainstream" or "individual" is that one stands before a planetwide grid of possibilities and chooses for one or a few of them.
I think I get this a little better than Aaryanna did, because there are infinite possibilities when it comes to choice in theory, yet there are limitations in practice. For example, I could choose to like pistachio ice cream, when lots of people already enjoy pistachio ice cream. Does this make me mainstream? If you intrepret it strictly, then yes. But there are infinite choices for me to make that might seperate me into a smaller group within that clique. For example, I could say I like to top my pistachio ice cream with ketchup (don't quote me on this, that's disgusting:animeswea). This would divide me into a much much smaller category. But yet, I still find masses of people who like that same thing. Still mainstream by strict interpretation, correct? So like I orignally said, it's hard to be totally individual, because there is no way to completely seperate yourselves from the rest of the group. It's really impossible, because virtually everyone is capable of enjoying the same things as you do. Which is that a bad thing? Because I certainly enjoy eating my pistachio/ketchup flavored ice cream with others.
A solution to this would be to ignore us completely. This argument, is like the glass half-empty or half-full ordeal. I don't know what to think anymore really, but I think this; we are individuals. Mainstream, is asociated with the word's 'same thing.' And if we were mainstream, wouldn't we all be alike? But because every human is different, there is really no such thing as being mainstream.
Ugh must I repeat myself?
Now here's my thing about individualism and mainstream. First off, let's ditch those maudlin terms. There is no such thing as Mainstream or Indiviualism period. You cannot be totally similar to someone else, because you will differ in some way, no matter how minute (this stems particularly from your life experiences and choices), so the term mainstream should really be called "Popular for the Masses". Individualism is a really old, cliche term too. You aren't gonna be totally different, because somewhere, at sometime...someone came up with the same ideas as you.[/B'] You tend to hang out with people of similar tastes right? How is that being an individual if you want to be part of a group? This means you go with the mainstream of that particular niche group.
I've never been so quoted in my life...lol and this thread was meant to explore this topic without suggesting that if you do what others do you are a mainstream conformist and if not, you are a rebel individual. It's not that black and white. We all take ideas and lifestyle choices of others. No one can truly say I AM MY OWN PERSON AND NO ONE INFLUENCES ME. That's a big crock. That's not to say that confroming to others is a good thing all the time, because it supresses expression. I don't think this will ever truly happen, because human nature always has a way of having at least one person sticking out from the mold.
Which is why I view others as extensions of myself
Then I must be the suave, debonair, ultra cool extension of you. :smirk:
then I would certainly hope all of us are individuals. I mean we all have expectations we are suppose to meet but that shouldn't make up your entire life. I mean if you live to meet these expectations you are missing one of the great things about being a human being with free will. Thats for explaining it for me indifference.
Expectations come from your socialization, the way you were raised. You have your own expectations of how you are gonnna perform under certain circumstances. Ever walk into a test and expect to do good or bad? But that's how people are. They set expectations for themselves, with their own free will. Your parents set them during adollescence because they are setting you for your own adult life. This hardly constitutes as opression of free will, which is something we should discuss in another thread.

Oh boy, the Love- Hate thread. Man the things I could say here. But I'll just take my personal experiences out of it and just describe the things. Love- Okay, first off this term is really abstract. People use this term too much and it's true meaning has been so detracted that it's lost its luster. You love your significant other, you love ice cream, you love other peoples pain (this is only a select few, mind you). But I guess, love is something that we all have for something in some way. In a sense, it's a strong liking for something, regardless of it being a physical or metaphysical thing. Hate- This is a very strong word. Never in life has a term besides love been so abused. People just don't know how to use this term to accurately describe their feelings towards a subject. For example, if I said " I hate tomatoes" it wouldn't be an accurate reflection for my dislike of tomatoes? Certainly not. Do I want to exterminate all tomatoes and all who enjoy them? Do I cringe at the mere sight of them? No. So using the term "hate" is really very archaic. Now, onto myself. I use love pretty loosely, but when my girlfriend says "I Love You", I always say " I adore you" or something along that path. Why? Because that term just has little meaning now, for me anyways. I don't just love this person, I adore them/ am in rapture because of them...etc. But for things I like, I always say "I love *insert Korey's favorite thing here*". Hating is not something I can do....no matter how hard I try. I never will find myself hating someone. It's just not a part of who I am. Not to say I am not capable of hate, but I mean that I can't hate someone for an extended period of time. Normally my emotions subside after a while and I find myself being able to stand that person again. I also don't condemn others. I find that people have some sort of redeemable quality and that keeps me hoping that they will display that quality in lieu of all their other things that I disagree with at the time. Ironically enough, I think I had the term Hate in a sig of mine, but that's only for the song "I Hate Everything About You" by 3 Days Grace. It seemed to fit the Death Note motif I was going for.
So than from what I gather, all of our opinions didn't matter and that Korey technically answered everyone's question before they asnwered it. Now I'm confused. This is like the genre battles in a way. EDIT: This question might not have a definite or indefinite answer.
That's the reason for discussion here ^_~. This question doesn't have a definite answer, but I merely stated what I thought on the issue. It's not the definite answer, because unlike laws of science, things like this never have definite answers....lol. That's why I like this type of question, because it's really funny to see people get so one-sided on the issue and then you point out something like I did and then you see the hyprocricy of people in genral.
Most of the responses are telling me that no one is paying attention to what Korey originally said.
Yeah what's up with that? You guys need to pay attention, cause I don't speak for my health. ;) I keed, but this is going on my sig for sure.
Personally I think the desire to claim one is an individual is more of a fear that one has of not being seen for who they are. So in an effort to make sure others know they are ‘different’ they go off on a quest of only doing what isn’t considered mainstream just to prove a point. Even if they don’t even like the less popular or mainstream choices out there as far as music, clothing, etc. Unfortunately, that just leads to losing yourself anyway in my opinion.
That's funny, because there is a theory called the "Spiral of Silence", where the exact opposite is true. For example, my Journalism professor (who ironcially enough, taugh us about this) was at a conference and they asked everyone in the crowd their opinion about a specific topic, and almost everyone unamously agreed with the subject, minus my teacher. He was the only one that disagreed. After the conference was over, he was approached by several others that said "I love what you said, and I totally agree". Thus the "Spiral of Silence". Sometimes people are afraid to veer from the norm in light of people judging them in a bad manner, so they stay "mainstream" (ugh this term stinks now...lol) in order to avoid such harsh judgements. Overall, even though some may say that I've already answered the question in my originial post....I think the topic was a complete success in the fact that it spurred discussion on this overall abstract concept. Like I said before....
Everyone is mainstream in some way, every one is and individual. It's really a balancing act, there is no one extreme or the other.
OMG, I just quoted myself!! I'm so vain.

Posers are people who are just fake period. They do stuff that isn't like them at all, no matter how it is. They just wanna be something they're not. But it's not unlike humans to try and be something we're not. It's something we've all be guilty in form or another. Personally, I LOVE it when people say I'm weird or goofy. It makes me all tingly inside, because they are afraid of me being different. But y'know, I'm me. I wasn't made to be normal. If there is such a thing as normal anyways.
-
This was brought up in the "L" thread, where people tended to think more or less on the opinion that the popular is uncool and being an inidividual is really what's "in" right now. I thought this would be a great topic for discussion. First lemme describe both aspect as I see them...this is purely my opinion. Mainstream: This is often used to describe a large mass of people who have similar tastes, whether it be in fashion, music....what have you. Some examples would be wearing Hollister clothes and listening to the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus or Good Charlotte of (insert popular band here). These people don't really tend to stray away from the norm, at least in theory anyways. Indiviualism: People who strive to be "different" from others, by ways of fashion, musical tastes, etc. Goths, metal heads, and many niche groups tend to fall into this stereotype. These people are often persecuted (at least they think so) or looked in a lesser way, because of their choice to veer from the socially common value in place at that time. You aren't gonna be totally different, because somewhere, at sometime...someone came up with the same ideas as you. You tend to hang out with people of similar tastes right? How is that being an individual if you want to be part of a group? This means you go with the mainstream of that particular niche group. Soooooo...basically, in my own humble opinon. Everyone is mainstream in some way, every one is and individual. It's really a balancing act, there is no one extreme or the other. What do you think?
Well, I did a little project on a playwright and the name Deus ex Machina comes from Latin meaning "God out of a Machine". So if you already knew that then excuse this message but it doesn't actually that you can do anything just because you're God.
More specifically, Deus ex Machina describes the part in a fictional work when a otherworldly figure or symbol (usually an angel or God) resolves a problem. DB just picked it cause it sounded cool. Either way, it's original. My SN is my real name. No simpler than that.

I'm along the same lines as well, I tend to lose interest and move on to the next thing. Some titles that come to memory were... Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater- I got all the way to the battle with The Fury and just stopped playing, dunno why. The game was great and I loved the fact that it had me constantly going in first person mode due to the lack of the Soliton Radar, which in my opinion, makes Metal Gear less fun. You could play MGS1 and MGS2 by looking at your little blip on the screen and avoiding the cones of the enemies. That easy. Marvel vs Capcom 2- By this one, I mean I've never unlocked everyone. That game has a ton of characters, over 50 if I'm not mistaken. It's just a pain to save up that many points and hope that the right character is in the shop at that time. Soooo frustrating. Which is not that bad, considering I would never play as Servbot or Roll anyways. Midnight Club- I never even got out of the first city with that one. I hate racing games and the bosses in this game were just plain unfair. Their cars are so much better that nothing you get can compete with them. I abonded this one pretty early. Never looked back. Megaman and Bass- One of the harder titles in the Mega Man franchise, I never beat the GBA port. I got all the way to the final stages and King whoops the reploid out of me. That boss fight by itself made me so frustrated that I quit playing it for over a month and tried to come back a week later and bam....still no luck. Trace Memory- The puzzles in some parts of this game are simply frustrating. I never got into it too much, but once I started solving stuff, it got better. Then I just quit, never got back to it. I need to though.

James, I couldn't have said it better myself. On a wilder tangent (for all those who bash mainstream music haters), mainstream music isn't bad per se, it's just not your cup of tea. As a person, you dig different types of music. Some of them come from independent record labels that don't get as big a shot as other artists who sign with major record labels. If it's one thing that these major labels are doing, it's signing the good talent so that it can be heard across the world. Doesn't mean that there isn't bad musicians (in my opinion anyways) that do "mainstream" stuff, but that doesn't make indie music the end all, be all of good music. To tell you the truth, you have to look long and hard for a decent indie band or musician. Lots of indie music is really sub par to what others are producing under major record labels, because mainly of the major label's ability to generate funds and make good records.

Hopefully I don't get beaten to the punch here, but there was already a thread for this. I know that repeat threads are ok, but I thought I'd bring it up... http://www.otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=57622&highlight=screen+names

Again, I'm beaten to the punch. Unless you're Japanese or of Japanese decent...it was never cool to say kawaii, ever. It's like all of those people who think that using French terms in their sentences makes them more refined or something like that. Personally I don't think that there is anything wrong with Gwen Stefani's Obsession with Japanese culture. People wanna throw in the "celebrity factor" and say that because she's a public figure, her obsession with anything is bad. Is it really any less bad for you to be obessed about anything? No matter what it is? Celebrities are people too and they all have their little obessions. Again, I salute Gwen for being different and choosing to stay that way. I second James opinion of hating Gwen Stefani. You can dislike her music or her style or the way she looks....but hating her for those reasons is simply shallow. Let's try to look at personality here, the true "Gwen" underneath it all.

Right now I'm hooked on Gunslinger by Avenged Sevenfold. Lot of hardcore A7 fans don't like this new album, but I can appreciate them mixing it up a little bit. Look what happened to 3 Doors Down. They released three albums that all sounded the same and their last one tanked hard. Random Fun Fact: For being so hardcore and devil worshipping, did you know that Avenged Sevenfold takes their name from a bible verse? I believe it's in the book of Genesis, when God puts his mark on Cain and says "And no man will attempt to harm him or he will have revenge taken upon him sevenfold" Sorry if I don't translate it line for line here. Thought I'd throw that out there for discussion.
-
Avenged666fold, we can clearly see your dislike for Gwen Stefani in general. I got it the fifth time personally, but maybe that's just me. I am merely joking, no flaming intended. This is totallly funny in an exaggerated sort of way. I'm a huge Death Note fan and I can see how using an Olde English L is kind of linked to being with L, but the truth of the matter is, it's just an asethetic choice by both people in this case. No more, no less. Personally, I congratulate Gwen on being so different in her music. Not saying that I like all of it (I thought Hollaback Girl was wayyyyy toooo overplayed), but I can at least give props to her for being different than other people. Plus I think it's her choice whether she wants to continue on her Ska/Alternative band kick with No Doubt or do her little R and B/ Pop stuff by herself. The chick sells records no matter what she does, so I believe the last laugh belongs to her.

There is always a a funny reception for Storm Troopers wherever they go. There was a guy who did that around halloween at our school. Him and Darth Vader showed up and he was going around going "Hey, how's it goin?" to everyone. Sadly, Vader didn't say anything, but then again, he looked kind of lanky from the Lord Vader I remember.... Kudos to you though. I like seeing that kind of thing. Make sure you record some video next time for us, so we can see people's reactions in real time. That would be absolutely priceless.

Thank you, Sunfall E for beating me to the punch....lol. That argument was kind of pointless. You asked a question, you got an honest answer. That's what questionnares do. You might get results you don't want, but if you're refusing to acknowledge them you are potentially skewing your research, but I digress. Lemme answer your questions now. Q: Why does this site exist? A: Because people like me, DB, and others frequent it and make it go. Basically because people visit it. No simpler than that. Q:What does this site do? A: Time to break this down. Otaku= Person who overly obsessed with anime (at least that's how it's become to be known) Boards=Message boards, where people post messages about topics known as threads. Synthesize them and you get, Otakuboards. Q:Who Posts here A: Me, you, the member base. People of all ages and backgrounds. Simple enough, no? Q: How did this site become this? A: One word....James. Q: Do you believe this is the best forum site around? A: Depends on what you're crtiquing it on. Good enough? Q: Do you have fun? A: Who doesn't have fun here? I was gonna post somthing stupid...but I thought it would be kind of hackneyed by now. Others have done it before and probably much better than I could ever have done.

My favorite dance would probably have to be the Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love the movie, but that dance always gets me up and groovin' everytime. "It's just a jump to the left. And a Step to the Right! Put your hands on your hips. And bring your knees in tight!" That whole movie is about audience participation, but that's the culmination of it. I also dig the Apache dance from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Seeing Will and Carlton (especially Carlton) doing the dance makes me laugh evertytime. In highschool, I always requested this song from the DJ at school dances. Amazingly, they've never heard of it (yeah right). Me and my friend Todd were heavily into the dance to. We knew all of it too. Then again, we were probably the biggest dufuses around. But hey, we were proud of it. Nothing like the present right?

Otakuboards has affected me in the way that it allows me to see how other people think and act in a different multitude of situations. It really is a showcase of minds here. Even though we have a passion for anime and such, we often carry on very interesting and deep conversations about deep subjects and most of us can hold our own weight in an argument. That's what I love about this site, that we all are smarter than the average bear. Most forums you'll go to lack the posting quality and care of this site, rarely will you find someone posting a one liner on here. I also think the boards has dealt me a new hand in the friends department. I don't have many people on here that I consider friends, but for the select few friends I do have ( I can count them on one hand), our relationships have spilled onto numerous websites across theotaku's network. We're even to the point where we consider each other siblings more than just friends. I think that the boards has affected a lot of us that way. We have very close friends that we don't even know in real life, per se....but we do know a lot about them. I think that's the coolest part about sites like this. You can have a great relationship with people you haven't even seen face to face. I'd like to meet certain people from this site and just talk about all the stuff we've done over the years on the boards. Enough of this sappy stuff, I'm starting to be overwhelmed with nostalgia.

Anime What three things from anime would you like to have and why?
Korey replied to Aaryanna's topic in Otaku Central
Man why is it only three? I have a list that is pages long, but if I was forced to pick three... 1) Mugen's martial arts skills- Mugen just looks plain awesome when he fights and the ability to rough people up by basically making stuff up shows how much of a master he is. Plus it'd look cool to helicopter kick some unsuspecting dude who wanted to start something with me. I'd even take Mugen's sword too, because I have a secret suprise inside. It's the perfect match for me. I don't care how I win, excluding foul play of course, but as long as I win, it doesn't matter. 2) Ichigo's fashion sense- If you've ever seen Ichigo outside of his school uniform, you would know that Tite Kubo draws some pretty cool clothing for Ichigo and I'd like to inherit that sense, because I'd like to nice while I'm roughing up some famous guy's son. I'm really looking towards Prince Phillip or Edward. Those pretty boys need to have some blood spilling from their face. Prissy English punks. 3)Shinigami's eyes- I don't like the consequence of having my life span cut in half, but to be able to see other's lifespans would be kind of neat, because if they are gonna die soon, I can make their last hours the best of their lives. It'd really help with medical procedures too, because I can see how much time someone would have left before they can't survive anymore. That way, I can provide treatment and try to save their lives before their time is up. I would use that power for the betterment of mankind, unlike my previous wishes.... -
It's like the KKK. They are legally able to believe what they want, however they can't act out their beliefs or their in deep ****. As for me, they are a bunch of sick bastards, so what if they have the right to believe what they want to believe? It's sick and these guys should be drivin into the gates of hell.
Yeah but the fact is, the KKK is pretty much a joke right now. No one except for a very select few acutally give two cents about what the KKK has to say anymore. Pedophilia is actually a bigger occurance now than prejudice, even though prejedice still exists today (sorry to you Bible Belters) in the South. But that's another thread in itself....maybe for later. -
My brother has got me hooked on Avenged Sevenfold's pre City of Evil stuff, especially Waking the Fallen. Chapter 4 is pretty sick stuff. I watched the video for Almost Easy and that is superbly directed. It makes Avenged Sevenfold look like male sirens luring us down to our doom in hell by singing their aurias and playing their hypnotizing guitar. Geez I'd like Synister Gates to teach me some of his techniques, plus I'd like to see what kind of equipment he uses. I know his distortion setting, but it's a little too much for my short stack....lol.
