I'm still going to get my impression of people off of how they post anyway so it won't make any difference in that respect. =P
I agree here. I've never really been one to pay much attention to reputation on other forums. However, I don't speak for everyone and see no reason not to give it a shot if there's an actual interest in it. So, on that note, I'm off to add a poll here to see just how much interest there really is.
1.) Making the feature only available to Members as opposed to New Members, (I think the standing is 100 posts to become a member?) that ensures that a person is at least ACTUALLY interested in being an active member. 2.) Allowing guests to rate posts, I know most guests are just using search engines and hitting the OB for one reason or another. Are you planning on allowing guests to rate posts?
1. While there is no way to disable the feature completely for members with less than a certain number of posts (default: 50), reputation changes from those members will not actually count until they reach that required number. 2. Since how much reputation you give/take is based on a number of factors tied to your account, there is no way, even if we wanted to, to enable reputation for guests. And just as a quick update, I was wrong. The default number of different people you need to rep before repeating is 20 though this is an editable option. Also, and I realize I'm a little late on bringing this up, but has the Thread Rating system really been around for a while and I've just never seen it used? Finally, since there seems to be some actual interest in this plan, would anyone object to my adding a poll to this thread so we can take a more formal vote on enabling reputation?
In my experience, this usually isn't possible to begin with. I'm guessing that the parameters can be adjusted, but most forums don't let you rep the same person (positively or negatively) twice in a row; you have to spread around your reputation-giving for a while before you can go back to them. ~Dagger~
You are indeed correct. While that can be adjusted, the default is to require you to rep 25 different people before you can rep the first person again. This is why I wasn't entirely worried about abuse of the system and while it can still happen, even with that restriction in place, we also generally don't seem to have the member base that would abuse it. Edit: Negative repping can be disabled completely if it became an issue. In that case, the reputation system would closely resemble theO's hugs.
Alright hold on, let's discuss why Rep is a bad idea. I am a member of Shoryuken.com, that has post thumbs up or down and lemme tell you, while it may emphasize good posts and things of that nature...it also opens the door for "gang raping" of posts or members that may not be popular. It's not really representative of good posts or not, just a popularity contest more than anything. So I'd say nay to that, unless we could disable that feature.
That's something I've seen happen and it was a concern of mine as well. I've also seen it work well too though so it can vary.
Wouldn't using the built-in reputation system be easier than using post rating? (Or are they not two separate things?)
They are two separate things and I just went and played with both systems on my own software to do a quick comparison. The new "Thread Rating" feature allows users to assign a rating of one to five stars to a thread, not to individual posts. The reputation system allows users to essentially rate individual posts and those ratings are translated into points that the member who made the post either gets or loses. The amount gained or lost is determined by a number of factors including your own reputation and the length of time you've been a member. So yes, in this case, not only would the existing reputation system be easier to use, it would fit the original rating suggestion exactly. I believe the reputation system even lets you assign custom images for each rank of reputation. Edit: Actually, scratch that custom images part. There's another feature called "User Ranks" that lets you assign custom images or text after a certain number of posts is reached. The reputation system will display little boxes by default but that image can be changed (to a star, for instance, and the more reputation you have, the more stars you get).
Well I don't know if you could get everyone in the OB on board to participate, but you could go with a 'post rating system'. Something that everypost would have that every other member could click on giving said person a rating.
The new version of the vBulletin software has a post rating system built in actually. I haven't had too much experience with it myself so I'm not sure if you can track the posts on a user to user basis and use that data to translate into an icon rating system for the poster but it is something to think about.
How many posts are required for that anyway?
It's a mystery ;) Really, it would spoil half the fun to tell you outright.

Okay, you now have options. Click on Edit Options on the left, scroll to the bottom, and under Miscellaneous Options, you'll see a new setting labeled "Display Post Count." The setting is pretty self-explanatory but I'll go ahead and add one small detail here. The default value is yes which is why you should still see everyone with post count display enabled. Simply set that to no and click on Save Changes to remove your post count from the postbit. If anyone has any issues or suggestions to further improve this, just let me know but I figure this should at least be a good compromise for now.
That certainly looks better to me Petie, and I think it makes sense overall to have the post count next to the member title considering the latter is based on the former.
That was my logic to begin with but I didn't want to extend a line that far over when the issue of un-balancing the postbit came up. I'd be happy to change it if I could get a general idea of how people would react.
-
In all seriousness though maybe we should do something about the way titles and post-counts are layout out because it's looking a bit cluttered to me.
I'm open to suggestions here. My other idea involved putting the post count next to the user title and while this would remove a line, it will extend the length of the user title line. Just for the sake of putting another idea out there, here's a visual of what I mean: Username Senior Member (1,243 posts) Custom Title theOtaku Portfolio If anyone else has any ideas of how they'd like things displayed, by all means let us know.
-
I've personally never placed too much weight on post count so I don't see displaying them as an issue (which should be evident by the fact that this is only my 630th post and I've been around since January 2004). In terms of hiding them, I think I could probably work something out if it's really deemed necessary. I'll do a little research and see if my idea will work and then just talk it over with James.
-
What do you mean? I'm assuming you're referring to your myOtaku site and the fact that the posts can now be seen. If that's the case, then your eyes do not deceive. Just make sure you're careful about what code you use in your post styles/intro in the future as broken code can cause the same problem you just fixed to resurface.

I have nothing against Sight & Sound but I do like Media Center (for the word Theatre, I prefer the "re" but for just about everything else, I stick with "er") a lot more.

Congratulations to both of you!
Not to get too far off topic here, but Ace, I determine whether or not I want this thread to die. It's my thread, so there. Mods, feel free to close it if ya want. You guys are the big dogs while I am a lowly member.:animedepr
Actually, no single person determines when a thread is to die unless that thread is so far gone it's past the point of recovery. In this case, there is still discussion happening and the thread will remain open as long as this remains true. On that note though, let's try to get things back on topic here. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so you are free to post whether or not you like the Jonas Brothers and why - just don't bash others views in the process. As for the discussion regarding the closure of this thread, I'm pretty sure this should end it but if anyone has any questions, just let me know (by PM though, please).

I don't believe that screenshot can be real because surely nobody would take a series this big and butcher it so badly. Oh, wait... I've had my issues with the movie all along but this... I'm speechless.
Actually, he is president elect. He won't be president until mid-January.
Ah, good point. I forgot about that actually.
That actually wasn't sarcasm, I actually do have a legitimate desire to see where this argument stems from, as I am uninformed (my fault, really, because I've never payed attention to religion OR politics up until now) on the matter.
[strike]I think he was referring to Nerdsy's post when pointing out the sarcasm, though I could be wrong.[/strike] And Raiha, I'm pretty sure you disproved your own argument the sentence after you made it. You say you don't think he'll bring about the end of the world and that he won't do anything great for the nation but you rationalize it by saying it's because we've never seen him in any situations to base a positive opinion on. While it's true that we haven't seen him do anything productive yet, it's a stretch to assume that he won't simply because he doesn't have an extensive political history for us to draw on. And considering he's now been president for what, 15 hours now? I think it would be fair to give him a little time to work on those "meaningful actions." For the record, I didn't mean this to criticize but I thought it was worth pointing out. Edit: Looks like Allamorph beat me to the explanation.
There was a permanent OB room at first and, yeah, it was removed because no one used it. All the OB peoples just mingled with the theO peoples in the lobby or other rooms.
I thought so but I couldn't remember for some reason. It works well with just one room anyway. Plus, any member can create their own room if they really wanted to make an OB only room.
-
For the time being though, we can probably make things feel a little more integrated by asking Adam to add an official OB room (though that may have been there from the beginning and was removed because it didn't see much use).
http://www.theotaku.com/chat/ ... Short of that, it might be a good idea for us to link to the chat system from OB.
I was thinking about mentioning theO's chat but I wanted to see what you had to say first. As for linking to the page, that would be very simple. Integrating the chat system into OB would be a bit more difficult though.
If none of that helps, the connection errors are most likely just a problem with your net connection. Though I'm not sure what else could be causing redirects besides trojans or bad Firefox add-ons.
You've been given some pretty sound advice already but I did want to comment on the last part of Des's post. Before you do anything else, unless you've already done this, check if you have the same problems on a different browser. If you do, this indicates a problem with either your connection or with the computer itself. In all honesty, this sounds more like an actual computer problem than one linked to a specific browser of internet connection but this extra check can't hurt and it a bit simpler than uninstalling things right away. Assuming you're on a Windows machine, I also suggest you restart your computer and boot into safe mode (press F8 after your computer beeps while booting) and try browsing like that. Safe mode should prevent whatever is causing this problem from running assuming it's something like spyware or a trojan.
There is a setting that allows members to edit the titles of their own threads during a certain period of time after posting it, but that seems to be it. After that expires, only moderators can edit the title and there's no way to set it to unlimited. Right now it's set to ten minutes.
Good catch. I forgot about that setting. I'm assuming setting it to 0 disables the ability to edit thread titles completely though so you're right - there doesn't seem to be a way to indefinitely allow thread title edits. Sorry DW. Though you're right, it couldn't hurt to ask.
-
The only way you can edit a thread title is with the "Edit Thread" feature - a feature which is only available to Moderators and up. I've tried a few different sets of permissions but as far as I can tell, there is no way to edit your own thread's title without having that option. And DW, as for your second suggestion, that would require a complete over-haul of the forum software. It would mean adding a new field to the database, changing the code that outputs the forums to include that new field, and then creating custom permissions for your update line. I can't speak for everyone but in my own personal opinion, it doesn't seem possible.
Not trying to be a mod here but you probably should have done this in the WWE thread.
You are indeed correct (though please just use the "Report Post" button in the future - it simplifies the process a lot for us) so I'll be merging this thread with the existing WWE thread.
