I was just explaining a method of adding new content to a thread that you were the last person to reply to and bumping it to the top of the forum, yet without double posting.
Okay, I see what you're saying then. Leave whatever the original was alone but copy it into a new post (so essentially there would be two copies of the first part, the second of course having the next part attached to it). I had just assumed you meant to delete every other copy after posting the new one but obviously, as we have both stated, this is impossible since you can't delete the original.
-
That has come up a few times, yeah, where a post can't be reposted because it's the only one in the thread.
I wasn't saying that the first post is the only one in the thread but when the OP adds to his/her story for the first time, your method implies deleting the original post, which cannot be done. Or am I misunderstanding you? My understanding was that every time a story is added to, the most recent version is copied into the new post and the first post is deleted. Wouldn't this imply that the original post gets deleted in the process though?
-
I can see where allowing double posting in this case would make sense but I think Desbreko's idea will also help keep the flow of the story. If you post three parts in a row and then there are six comments, followed by a fourth part, a reader would have to go through the six comments before coming to the next part of the story. This isn't a big deal but having the story all in one post makes things a little easier to read. However, I do have one concern. Deleting the original post in thread deletes the thread itself. Where is the middle ground here? Would allowing two posts right at the beginning (one for the title, info, etc and the other for the first part of the story) make sense or is there some other alternative?

Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360): When I first read about this game, I was extremely disappointed to find out it was a PS3 exclusive. I was actually going to buy a PS3 specifically so I could play it and I didn't even really know much about it at the time. Needless to say, when I found out it was coming out for 360, I was thrilled and quickly reserved it. This game is absolutely amazing. They took an interesting approach for the controls but once you get used to them (which does not take long), having the ability to free-scale just about anything in a massive world is nothing short of amazing. I personally find that everything is very well done and while there is the occasional complaint of the investigation missions getting too repetitive, I haven't had that complaint myself. Halo 3 (Xbox 360):Not much really has to be said about this one. Granted, since Assassin's Creed came out, I haven't been playing too much of it but the online play is still great. I beat the campaign on Heroic and am not looking forward to trying it on Legendary... The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360): Okay, so I was really just rushing to finish the guild quest lines before Assassin's Creed and haven't played since but I figured it was worth mentioning because I still have quite a bit left to do there. I forgot just how good this game was until I picked it up again. I'll definitely be going back to this one sooner or later if not only to finish the main quest line. Pokemon Pearl (DS): I'm not ashamed to admit that regardless of what became of the show, the games have remained just as great as they were when Red and Blue came out. There's just something about them that always remains fun, with the exception of Victory Road which is still a painful experience until you make it to the other side. And finally... World of Warcraft (PC): I haven't been playing this nearly as much as I used to but I haven't dropped it entirely. I guess I'm just waiting for my one friend to re-activate his account and my other to get a new computer to really play this again.
I don't think this is even possible with the software we're using.
I second this. With all of the forum software I've used (and there's been quite a few), I've never once seen a feature that lets the user customize the skin beyond selecting which one they want to use. That's probably for the best though because as anyone who has tried making a skin for a forum likely knows, it's not an easy thing to do.
I'd just be happy if we could make our own banners for the top of the site, and even edit the colors of the menu bars and such.
However, in reference to this point, I can see something like what myOtaku currently has in terms of color customization being slightly easier to handle though I know of no software or modifications that allow it.
It would be really easy to make, though.
Heh, and there's the most important part of your post. You're right - it may not be used too much but regardless of whether it's used twice or two hundred times, it's not a difficult thing to implement. Plus, I'm thinking along the lines of a FAQ or a sticky thread which specifically links to certain pages (say a link to PM a user for instance) where a relative link would be useful. Though in the end, I guess simply saying "PM [username]" works too.
-
I actually sort of mentioned this before, though only indirectly. A tag I know I would find useful would be a relative link tag for linking to non-threads without breaking peoples' cookies. I've actually made one on a vB forum myself and it's fairly straight forward.
-
Haha, I didn't realize they were links either but let's say I was referring to them ;) I knew it forced the http:// but who knows, there could have been some custom code that I just wasn't aware of (and actually, probably wouldn't be too hard to make though it would have limited uses).
-
Yeah sorry. I was thinking more along the lines of posts in which you can't make relative links (I think?), not the navigation.
-
No, the detach feature alters the OB database and has nothing to do with myOtaku. What is likely happening is that the link is pointing to the full www.otakuboards.com address and your cookies are set for otakuboards.com (no www). The page you're looking for is myotakuconnect.php which you can type manually if the link isn't working for you. I'll also go ahead and add this to the FAQ section.
-
I'm not sure if stickying the threads would work but since most forums have a thread directory, I don't see why we can't add a favorites thread section to the directory and list them there. Is this along the lines of what you were thinking about?
-
You could probably remove the word View too and just leave a Guestbook link. And on a related note, I've worked extensively with PHP recently so I'd be happy to help out if you need it. Just let me know.
I have to say that I like the single thread concept, but then it's because having a directory makes things so easy to find instead of having many different forums, that just seems like it would get chaotic very quickly.
This plays into my next idea actually. Des, I do see what you're saying about temporary, topic specific forums and maybe they're not the best way to go. The directories are definitely helpful already and if we had things set up where multiple threads for a single series fell under one category in the directory (see example below), it would be a good balance between the two current choices. Because DBZ was brought up and makes an easy example, here's what I mean: Dragonball Z: (Link to a general thread if it exists) - The Cell Games (Link to saga specific thread) - The Namek Saga (Link to saga specific thread) - The Frieza Saga (Link to saga specific thread) - Etc. (Whatever else fits in this category) While other, more general threads, can still have single listings in the same directory. It requires a little work setting things up but once it's up and running, this could work pretty well. Your thoughts?
Apparently I'm allergic to everything.
I second that. I am, and have been for as long as I can remember, allergic to everything air-borne for almost then entire year. Basically, this means just about everything you listed in your post, Neuvoxraiha. My allergies range from mild, where they're just an annoyance to severe where I was out of school for a good week once. I've been through six or seven different medications, all of which seem to stop working after the first year. I also went for shots (three to six in each arm, once a week) for five years which, I've been told, helped compared to what they were when I was little. My best story involves my one game baseball career. When I was younger, I wanted to play baseball. I made it through two practices and half of an at-bat when I realized I couldn't see the ball. Needless to say, I haven't played since.
Or we could just get rid of the guestbook and friend links to make the line shorter. Those bits always seemed unnecessary to me since there's already a link to the person's main page, from which you can do both of those things.
I think this is probably the best solution, though being able to detach the accounts isn't a bad idea to go along with it. I've always questioned the need for the guestbook links, especially since view and sign take you to the same page, so removing that, along with the friend link seems like a good way to go.
I almost think that we should have a number of "flavor of the month" forums that are constantly rotating in and out. These could tie into big movies, video games, anime series, etc. that are popular at the time. Then when member interest has faded they can be merged back into one of our existing forums and create newer, more topical ones.
I think this idea actually has a lot of potential. It opens up more possibilities for discussion about what's popular at the time while not having a ridiculous number of permanent forums on the main page. The only concern I had is that when merging a forum based on a specific video game back into Hardwired, you'd have a lot of threads about that game now in the list but I don't think that would be a problem since when they're merged, those threads would have become less active anyway.
The 60 GB one only has 55,68 GB that you can actually use. The rest are silly software files and everything, I suppose. It's a bit of a pain, because you'd expect them to just add 5 GB more to it for their own apple crap, so that the costumer could have their full 60 (or 30, in your case) GBs. Moo.
The problem isn't entirely in the preloaded software. It does take up a little room but not that much. It really comes in on the scales they use to advertise the amount of data it can hold. In reality, 1,024 kb = 1 MB and 1,024 MB = 1 GB. These companies base their values on a 1,000 kb to 1 MB and 1,000 MB to 1 GB scale. It may not seem like much but it does add up. So that, combined with the software on the device, accounts for your missing space.

Happy birthday! Mine's in October so it's not too far off either. 1. My tradition is a fairly straightforward one. Family comes over, we have dinner (which varies though it's usually not a fancy thing), and my mom bakes a cake and sometimes a pie (which is always really good). This year though, I'll be going to a local restaurant which now offers a free steak and lobster dinner on your actual birthday. Luckily, our tradition never falls on the actual day (usually the weekend of) so I'll get both this year. 2. This is a tough one but my best in recent memory was my camera. I got the Nikon D200. I can't really call this a birthday present though since it took the spot of my Christmas present too, and from my parents and grandmother. 3. Knowing my age has never actually made a difference beyond knowing I could legally drive more than one person in my car at a time... Otherwise, most people tell me I seem/look older than I am anyway so my actual age becomes sort of irrelevant. 4. This one I'm not too sure about though I do remember particularly enjoying the year when me, a couple of friends, and my family went to Medieval Times. I have to hand it to you, this thread proved more interesting than I thought it would when I first read the title (I know, I know, "don't judge a book by its title.").

I have the 60 GB iPod Video, though I don't use the video feature really. At the time I got it, I had an iPod Mini but needed more space. There's really not much to say about the iPod that people don't already know. Many people complain about it but I've yet to have a problem with the player itself and its features. I've seen plenty of technical problems but those can usually be solved for free with a call to Apple, assuming it's in warranty. Overall, it's a good MP3 player and that takes a lot for me to say considering it comes from Apple. Edit: Clurr, I, like many others left mine with the default name of Petie's iPod. I never really gave it much thought beyond that. And I agree with you on the Nano - it seems too easy to break/lose and it's a lot of money for not much storage space. Oh, and I'm just shy of 5,000 songs on my own :)
I was never fond of sending emails and IM's. I'd much rather write people notes than wait for them to log on. One could almost always tell how the person feels by his/her penmanship, so it makes them HAHAHAs more believable than yeah, lol.
Almost is a good word to use there. My penmanship is truly awful so in my case, one would be lucky to be able to read it, never mind tell how I'm feeling. More on topic though, I agree with what seems to be most of you. In most cases, I definitely prefer face to face. Besides the things that have already been mentioned, like body language, you're actually with the person you're talking to which tends to be a bit more fun. However, I use pretty much all of the other methods on a regular basis as well. There are obviously some cases when face to face isn't an option, like having a real-time conversation with the good majority of the people reading this. So I think all of the methods have their own value depending on the situation.

Transformers actually surprised me. I liked the show when I was little though I was never a huge fan. It was just one of those movies I wanted to see because it would be entertaining. Going in to watch it, I didn't really expect anything out of it besides keeping me entertained for the time I was there. It's probably for that reason that when the decent/actually good parts (for instance, the fact that there was actually some character development, which I didn't expect) did happen, I enjoyed it that much more. And like any classic action movie, the big battle scene was still fun to watch, especially when said battle involves giant transforming robots.

I saw it last night and I actually ended up enjoying it. I have never been a fan of The Simpsons before and every time a friend tries to convert me, it always ends up being "one of the bad episodes." But, a group of us went out for dinner and then randomly decided to go see it so I figured why not? It had its moments and I don't regret seeing it but at the same time, it still hasn't made me into a Simpsons fan.
$3.50 for a gallon of gas.
Ha, $3.92. Wait... that's not a good thing to win... My most outrageous purchase I can think of actually only cost $1 but the thing itself is completely ridiculous. It's this wooden sculpture with two parrots on it - one upright and the other on the opposite side upside down. My family was having a garage sale and my neighbor brought over some stuff to sell as too and that was one of the things she brought. If I think of it, I'll get a picture of it up here when I get home.

Traditional Theater Forum/Sub-Forum?
Petie replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in Help & Feedback
I like the name Entertainment Center or even something like Entertainment Hub. Media Center I'm not too keen on, sounds like something Microsoft would conjure up for Windows. :p
Heh, it is something Microsoft conjured up for Windows (though I'm sure you knew that already, I couldn't resist) which is why I wasn't crazy about Media Center being used either since the first thing that comes to mind is an impossible to setup correctly media player extender. -
I guess I'm not the only one who recently re-installed Guild Wars. My main is still the same (Petie of Ascalon, Level 19 Warrior/Ranger) though, like silpheedpilot, WoW occupies most of my computer based game time. I really have to re-compile my list of online names/friend codes for the sticky now that I'm thinking about it.
