  1. This wasn't a planned upgrade for me. I went to download the latest 3.x patch and found 4.0 was now available and figured I'd give it a shot. While I'm generally happy with the results, it didn't exactly handle the upgrade as well as I'd have liked. It broke some images and turned display names into usernames (though admittedly it did warn me about this one but suggested leaving the default so as not to confuse who was who after the fact). It seems to have an entirely different structure so I'm tempted to actually back everything up, upload a completely fresh copy, and then copy back what's still needed (like the uploads folder) to clean it up a bit but I'm not sure about that yet. On the matter of skinning, it seems to be completely ignoring the fact that there were other themes even installed and I also can't tell if they've completely ditched BB code to switch to raw HTML instead so there's definitely still a bit to do.
  2. So, in case it wasn't obvious, I updated the forum software today. We were running the 3.x series before and we're now on version 4. There are obviously some visual changes that need to be made but, for the most part, it looks like the upgrade went well. As always, let me know if you notice anything out of place though. If you're having trouble logging in, try using your email address or whatever you had your display name set to before as the conversion set your usernames to your display names from the previous version.
  3. How are you liking it so far? I'm still (impatiently) waiting for mine.
  4. Yes, but there is still more above that! As it stands now, two more in your case. I'd definitely be open to adding more in to fill in the gaps though.
  5.   They still exist. There just aren't quite so many of them.
  6.   I'm not an expert by any means but I'm pretty sure this is kind of a big one.
  7. I very much prefer hands-on experience when it comes to learning. I reference things constantly but the examples I'm reading tend to really stick once I've had a chance to apply them. That was my approach while learning to program for the web and was also my inadvertent approach to learning how to set up a Linux server when we had an emergency and had to rebuild it from scratch. So, I guess to put it concisely, reference material with practical application is how I learn best, though this method obviously isn't necessarily applicable to everything.
  8.   :(   That was a dark time in OB's history and one which I still very much regret. Such a thing should never happen again but, alas, that doesn't help your particular situation.
  9. I'm getting a haircut and then probably hanging out with a friend I haven't seen in a while.
  10. With some careful fiddling, we can probably restore that formatting unless the code has since been stripped from the posts.
  11. It may have been security concerns - that's the only thing I can think of. I do remember not liking the look of the new vB though, you're definitely right about that.
  12. Actually, I'm hosting OB and theOtaku's chat now ^_~ He does, of course, still pay for theOtaku's hosting as well as the license for IPB though.   But, even if that was the issue, bear in mind that staying on 4.x would have been free. Switching to IPB or 5.0 both had a price tag and I suppose IPB's was less.
  13.   I actually really miss the old layout. In hindsight, part of me wishes that we just stayed on vB 4.x (or whatever version we were on when they decided t completely re-make their software). I don't even entirely remember how we came to the decision to switch. I do remember not liking something about the new vB (their licensing changes, possibly?) but why did that lead us to decide to move to a different platform entirely?   Don't get me wrong, IPB isn't bad but it lacks the essence of what really made OB stand out back then.
  14. I guess there was some merit to the old teacher argument of not letting us use calculators in elementary school... Though I still maintain that their excuse of "you're not going to walk around with a calculator in your pocket" is definitely invalid!
  15.   I'm pretty sure he can change his own title and is welcome to do so if he wants. But Shin, if you can't and want to change it, let me know.   These are definitely some good points. While I do think threads like the PRP can have a negative impact on a community as a whole (I've seen it happen first hand a few times), those of you who are saying it isn't the main (or even a significant) reason are absolutely right. There are a large number of factors that came together that lead to decline in activity here, most of which have been mentioned so I won't re-list everything. That being said, it is still nice to reconnect with old friends here so OB still has a purpose, even if it's vastly different than what it was way back when.
  16. Agreed on all counts. I'm not usually big on watching sports on TV (for the most part, it just tends not to hold my interest) but this was an awesome game, especially those last two drives. The back to back completely improbable events (Seattle's absurd catch and then the almost equally unlikely interception) certainly kept it interesting right through to the last minute.
  17. I honestly don't remember what iterations the titles went through but, if it makes you feel any better, I can tell you that you're not at the top yet!
  18. Hello and welcome new people! It's great to see an influx of new people coming in! ^_^   And welcome back, CaNz! It's great to see you again!
  19. I just wanted to stop in and wish a Merry Christmas to my extended OB family! ^_^
  20. Madoka, first and foremost, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply here. I actually did read your intro post last month but never had a chance to sit down and respond to it. Despite the lack of activity here, you have found yourself a good group of people and are certainly among friends.   I'm sorry to hear about the end of your relationship and the poor circumstances for finding anime but I am glad it's been able to help you cope a bit as well as bring you closer to your son. Silver lining, perhaps? He sounds like he really cares and it's awesome he was able to get through to you and help you through this.   I actually only recently watched Madoka myself but I truly enjoyed it. I hope you can identify with Madoka's positive aspects as well, and not just the negatives.   I've only seen bits and pieces of Death Note but it's definitely something I intend to fully watch at some point.   Anyway, let me wrap this up with a big welcome to the community. I wish you the best of luck with everything and I hope to see you around here moving forward.
  21. I had watched parts of the original series in the past but only got around to fully watching both series over the summer myself and I definitely enjoyed them. My friend told me that Brotherhood was much better and I didn't quite understand how until finishing both. I definitely enjoyed the original but Brotherhood does seem to be an all around better story.   (I know what you mean. It's a strange moment when you realize you're thinking about these characters as real people.)
  22.   Works for me.   If someone has some more fitting words to end a thread of this magnitude, let me know and I'll throw them in.
  23.   I have always been in favor of this course. These types of threads, pretty much without fail, tend to have a negative impact on a forum. I've seen it first hand too many times and removing them, after the riots discussions about doing so are over, usually has a positive effect.   Also, there are a lot of well written responses in this thread that I'd like to properly address at some point in the near future but for now, I think this is one of the more important points. Will it completely revive the forum? Absolutely not. But it can certainly get us moving in the right direction.
  24. Hey, and welcome! ^_^   That thread does actually exist and can be found [url=http://www.otakuboards.com/index.php?/topic/44728-new-members-introduce-yourselves-here/]here[/url] but this works too.   I would definitely love to see this place pick up again. There are still a lot of great people that pop in from time to time so it's entirely possible and I think Saiyangohan2002 had some good points in that direction as well. Perhaps those of us who are still around should actively start discussing how to make it happen.
  25.   As Des said, the issue was the use of a span tag. I just updated it to use a div instead and it now appears to be working properly!   รข??Also, just because I was curious if I could do it, it seems I successfully associated all of your old posts with your new account.
