The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2006 (Final)
Retribution replied to Shy's topic in General Discussion
I would also like to make a point of thanking our artists, who went above and beyond the call of duty this year: Delta, Ezekiel, Eclipse, White, DeadSeraphim, and Redemption. Also special thanks to SunfallE, GTK, and Retribution[/b'], whose artistic contributions can also be seen here.
I love the nod of respect, but uh, what'd I do this year? Oh, and before I forget: Whoever made that, it looks amazing. I love you. -
Man, we really lambasted you there, hunh? :animeswea Ah, well.... Oh, and I was not entirely sure what you meant by the bolded statement. Could you perhaps clarify?
I think as a human, you are deserving of food, as well as shelter and clothing. It doesn't need to be first class cuisine or a Prada suit, but, well you see what I'm getting at.

I know, I know, everyone. I bring up the point [mostly for fun] to show that a law can be unjust, be it civil or criminal. And that's not to say that anti-theft laws for food are unjust (although I do think it a human right), but in a broader sense I want people to at least think about why this crime is illegal and 'wrong'. Too often do people quickly dismiss the issue if they can quickly equate "crime" with "bad" and get on with life. And if people think on a deeper level than "crime = bad, arrest thieves," why it's happening will become a more important question than "is it illegal or not".
In a word, no, I don't think crime is ever acceptable.
Be careful there, Gavin. Interracial marriage was a crime for quite a long time in the United States.
-
Crime is wrong. Now, this is not to say that crime is situationally acceptable; it is simply what it is.
For the sake of argument: Of course crime is wrong. That's why it's considered crime. If it were not a crime, it would not be considered wrong. Which brings me to my devil's advocate question: is breaking the law justified? If so, is stealing food one of those acceptable laws to break?

Hey, takoyuki. If you have a question about how to use a board function such as attaching images, please ask in the Suggestions & Feedback forum. There are kind folks there who will happily tell you how. But since we're here, I'll tell you quickly. Click the "Reply" or "New Thread" button, scroll down to "Additional Options" and click "Manage attachments". There you can browse for the image you'd like to attach. Here are some things you need to keep in mind when creating a new thread. - Provide some pictures you'd like used in your banner and avatar. It makes the artist's life easier, which increases your chances that someone will help you. - Try to be more specific when describing what you want. "Red or blue tint" doesn't quite give someone an idea of what you'd like. - Have a solid thread title. It makes the forums look more organized, and people are more inclined to read things that catch their interest. Next time, try something like "Halo Avatar and Banner". Please familiarize yourself with the Art by Request Rules and the Official OtakuBoards Rules so that you know how things work and what we expect. I'm going to close this thread because I think it'll be easier for you to just start over. But next time, pretty please, try to make things clear. Thanks!
Asking people to think about why they commit the crime is also playing upon their emotions which is agrumentum ad misericordiam. So your statement is also a logical fallacy Retri. ;)
Really, my argument is no appeal to emotion. I'm asking people to put aside their first reflex judgment of "Crime? That's horrible! They should be locked up!" Instead, I want people to see the underlying social issues that drive these people to steal. Too quickly do people dismiss criminals as riff-raff and get on with their lives. True, many times criminals are stealing out of want, not need. But there are also those who steal out of need. Pity is my last concern.
Oh this poor baker! You guys who are saying it's okay to steal from the baker are forgetting that it takes money to make money. The baker has to pay for his store, the electricity, the baking supplies, taxes and his employees. Now you have all these people stealing from them. He's got to cut costs for the loss. Gonna have to raise prices. Bread keeps getting stolen. I guess we've got to fire some employees. Too bad. The families they were working hard to support are now poor too. Not earning any money for all of his hard work since only thieves get the bread the baker is forced out of business. Too bad, now there isn't a store to steal from. Now they've all got to steal food. So off they go to join the ranks of poor and move on to the next hard working business to run them out of business.
Sorry Panda, that's a logical fallacy. Seldom does a slippery slope exist. I'm not really trying to defend thieves. I'm not trying to defend crime. I just want everyone to ask themselves why this person is driven to crime.
See, here I disagree. Why should the crime's victim suffer because of the criminal's plight? What about a baker who works hard all day making bread in the heat, and then puts his wares on display to try and earn a profit, only to have someone walk along and take it without paying? How is that fair to the baker? Or what about in more extreme cases, do you agree to mugging someone in a dark ally because they have the money a criminal needs to feed its family is 'morally and ethically acceptable'? [/COLOR']
Well, I'm assuming that the baker isn't on the brink of starvation/poverty/malnutrition. It's not fair to the baker, and I'm being presumptuous but the starving person needs it 'more'.

So basically, here are a few of my thoughts. I really enjoy the fight scenes. They're very well described and narrated, with a good pace to them, but an equally good depth. However, you need more than just fight scenes to carry this story. I understand it's going to be a central part of the plot, but give us suspense, mystery, huge plot turns. Massive and long fight scenes are cool for a while, but they can get stale. If you want to keep up the tempo, you have to be sure you don't get too absorbed in events like these. As for character development, it might have been worth devoting a chapter to the backstory of White and Retribution (haha). I would highly recommend that in the future. It's easy to get sucked into talking about you character, but break away from the linear structure. By looking at separate 'scenes' and bits of story separately, you can weave them together later. This is awesome for plot developments and twists. Have at it, chap. You're a great writer.
How about this. Instead of legalizing the obvious crime of stealing, why not heal the economy, create a government that isn't war-hungry, and unite peoples under peace. Then, you know, this problem wouldn't exist.
While ideal, it won't be happening for quite some time, if ever. Again, if you're a single parent with no way to afford food, stealing food might be a better bet than waiting for the federal government to eliminate poverty.
-
I think crime is morally and ethically acceptable if your survival depends upon it, but I don't think it should be legal for the reasons Raiyuu mentioned. Allowing crime for survival opens the door for all sorts of crazy scenarios, and an eventual deterioration of legal precedent. But if you've got a family to feed, I'm saying stealing from 7-11 shouldn't bug your conscience.
better than anything i could do, I can't make anything from strach sadly i can only edit photos :animecry:
Hey optiplex, when commenting on other people's art, it's important that you tell them what they did well, and what could be improved. That way, Hittokiri can get better through your suggestions. Thanks!

Sorry, NashvilleDream, it's against the rules to post threads like these. I'm assuming you don't have money in the bank you could use, or that this program doesn't give loans/scholarships/fee waivers for those eligible? Realistically, you won't make much in a month, even if you got a job tomorrow and worked ever hour you had after school for every day. If you don't have any money saved, and there's no sort of financial aid you can get, you might be out of luck. Ask about getting fee waivers or something, though. Most programs have them.

I read an article in the Washington Post (front page news) that stem cells aren't necessary anymore, because they can extract even more useful cells from the skin shed by the embryo during its course of development. It would be a 100% genetic match for you, and so you could have your own bank of cells that could be used for you in the future. I'll look for the article later. If it's more than speculation, then the debate very well may be closed.
As long as you aren't groping each other in the middle of a mall, I'm pretty fine with couples kissing, hugging, holding hands, and etc in public. [/color']
Right on! Well, I guess it really depends on how hot the couple is, to be blunt. Survey Time - I'm 17 years old. - I probably feel fair (C) about abstinence. - Once. - Two relationships to date. - I only see them maybe once every so often, usually with a new couple that can't get off each other. - Usually not, unless they're making out inside a church or having dry sex in a restaurant, lol. - Sure, as long as they didn't get out of hand. Showing affection isn't something to be ashamed of. - Too far would probably be 'sexual touching' i.e. massaging a girl's breast or rubbing a guy's crotch. At that point you have to get a room, but kissing and hugging are perfectly acceptable. - No. Until there's nonconsensual stuff going on or clothes being taken off (or the aforementioned groping), I don't think it's too far. Freak dancing really isn't a big deal. - Dating should probably begin sometime in high school, maybe 15 years old? Even at that point, the relationship is still extremely weak... teenagers are just wishywashy beings. Serious dating begins sometime after high school, maybe 18 years of age.

The debate at hand is not on whether or not the Christian Church should allow gays to get a religious union, but rather a state sponsored marriage, therefore talk of God and damnation is beside the point. The state is supposedly separate from the church, and with that being said I don't think gays are pushing for religious reform.
Alex come on, most of the garbage comes from the U.S. and if you're honest enough you'll admit it. I probably could have phrased what I said a little more tactfully, and it did come out a little more preachy than intended, but I still stand by the fact that most of these sites and their proliferaters are American in origin.
Or you could just man up to your mistake. You associated Americans with hateful messages. That was wrong of you say, and you know it. You're no better than someone who insinuates that 99% of Christians are blind.

Wrong forum, buddy. If you want to request a banner and avatar, please do it in the Art by Request subforum. Additionally, you really haven't provided much at all in terms of information people can use. The more you give artists, the more likely it is that other people will help you, and that you'll be satisfied with the product. Thanks.
Did you ignore the part about virtual communication? It's not very far away. It isn't until that point that Internet communication tkes over.
I assure you, I didn't ignore that part. The fact of the matter is internet communication is probably not going to "take over". That's a sort of thing people said about TV, the telephone, and e-mail. Don't be silly. So to answer your question, yes IRL communication matters. It's value is immeasurable. Those who don't communicate with people IRL usually don't get very far in life. Social ability is a skill that gets you far in life. So go ahead and argue its obsolescence -- you're really walking into a dead end with that train of thought.
Ah, my true reason was right there in my post. I don't enjoy the people around me. I don't enjoy the limitations of life based on location. I have no fear of interpersonal communication, in fact I do it all the time, but it's a horribly disappointing action.
I won't really bother arguing with that, considering it's your opinion.
-
the question here is 'does talking irl matter?' After all, if a generation was born on AIM, wouldn't it be enough for them? There standard? The things which are limitations to us aren't there for them.
Of course it matters. You miss out on an essential component of the human experience if you don't talk in real life. There's a deeper level to communication that transcends words; facial expressions, tone, pitch, sarcasm, inflection, you miss all of those by talking on AIM. Communication would be horribly crippled without face to face communication.
I like the idea of internet communication dominating IRL. Why?
Quite possibly because you're afraid of talking IRL? Just a guess.

Art Just A Random Question To All You Artists Out There
Retribution replied to a topic in Creative Works
vamp_girl, takoyuki, please try to explain what you mean. Go into depth as to what exactly inspired you, and perhaps how your first attempts went? What kept you going after that? Those sorts of questions can be helpful in expanding your points. Thanks. ;D -
Of course I'm not even mildly surprised that the site is American in origin.
And there you were preaching about the inaccuracies of sweeping generalizations.
