1. Yeah, it's great, but it needs to be the correct dimensions. I'm not sure if you still have the original file in which you could edit the layers in, but please redo the piece. I guess it's my fault for not making things apparent enough... my bad for having you make a piece that's not used. So it's still your turn, unless you'd like to be skipped.
2.
"Let's use a female child as an example. All the little girl knows as she first attempts to integrate her male side is that she is extremely attracted to her father. She wants him around and close to her all the time. The manuscript explains that what she really wants is male energy---because this male energy completes her female side. From this male energy she recieves a sense of completion and euphoria. But she mistakenly thinks that the only way to have this energy is by sexually possesing her father and keeping him close physically.
What is this, a Freudian Oedipus Complex gone backwards? I mean ? this type of thing has been completely and thoroughly debunked. Normal, healthy children do not want their parent in a sexual way. Freud said basically the same thing, and frankly, I think he was trying to make himself feel better when he realized he wanted to have sex with his mother by saying ?Well, it?s normal ? everyone is the same way!? A little girl doesn?t want to sexually possess her father. Like I said, the word ?energy? isn?t really necessary in this case either. I think you?re talking about a hormonal drive that makes humans want to have sex with someone, which isn?t really all that active during childhood.
"Interestingly, because she intuits this energy as her own and thinks she should be able to command this energy at will, she wants to direct the father as if she were part of herself. She thinks that he is magical and perfect and able to supply her every whim. In a less than ideal family, this sets up a power conflict between the little girl and her dad. Dramas are formed as she learns to posture herself in order to manipulate him into giving her the energy she desires.
Not really. In a family where the girl knows her place and understands that ?that?s just the way it is,? the girl wouldn?t try to posture herself to manipulate anyone. I know many girls who are mild enough to just accept their father?s law, despite a disagreement. Also, the girl doesn?t desire ?energy? ? she desires a car, a cell phone, more freedom, a boyfriend.
"But in an ideal family, the family would remain uncompetitive. He would continue to relate honestly and have enough energy as to supply her unconditionally even though he can't do everything she asks.
You?ve got to be joking here. In an ideal family, the father would cave into his daughter?s every whim? That results in a corrupted child, not a perfect family. If you do as much as you can for a child, how would that make that child turn out? I mean, my parents can do the dishes, the trash, and the laundry, but they shouldn?t if they have able-bodied children to do it. And if the father can?t give his daughter everything she asks for, how is that relationship ?ideal? according to you?
The important thing to know here, in our ideal example, is that the father would remain open and communicative. She thinks he is ideal and magical but if he honestly explains who he is and what he's doing and why, then the little girl can integrate his particular style and abilities, and proceed past the unrealistic view of her father.
Actions speak louder than words. This is why your statement doesn?t practically work with children. If I give my daughter a lollypop every time she asks for it, but each time say ?I?m giving this to you because you deserve it,? the child will eventually come to understand that I accept bratty behavior. Explaining to the child something won?t work, when you turn around and hand them a lollypop anyway to show their success ? they take it as a battle won. They internally note that ?[fill in behavior] will still allow for me to get a lollypop.? A father shouldn?t be your version of ?ideal.? Every daughter on the planet would want to be treated like a queen, and end up throwing a tantrum when they weren?t. They would never proceed past the unrealistic view of their father, because their unrealistic view of their father was reinforced by a perpetual supply of rewards for poor behavior.
In the end she will see him as just a particular human being, with his own talents and faults.
That?s terrible. A daughter should see her father as more than a particular human being with talents and faults. A daughter should see her father as a man in her life that loved her sincerely, protected her, picked her up when she fell, put band-aids on her cuts, and read her bed-time stories. Not as some guy with good stuff and bad stuff about him.
"The problem," she went on, "is that most parents, up tto now, have been competing with their own children for energy, and that has effected all of us. Because this competition was taking place, none of us have quite resolved the opposite-sex issue. We're all stuck at the stage where wer are still looking for our opposite-sex energy outside ourselves, in the person pf a male or female we think of as ideal and magical ans can posess sexually. See the problem?"
I really don?t. I see the ?problem? of us wanting ?opposite-sex energy? as a primal drive to want to have sex. It?s a hormonal thing, not an energy thing. When a hot girl walks down the street in a short skirt and a tight shirt, I?m not looking to steal her energy ? I?ll tell you that much. ;)
3. I'd say that Chapter 1 was better, but nonetheless, this was good. I think I just wanted to get to something with a bit more action, so blame my restlessness, not your writing. But while we're on the topic, when will there be plot development? After you introduce your Femme Fatales, or during the intros? I vote for during... and maybe tie in their purpose as you do it.
4.
I totally agree! I think it was a great way for The Bus to end his career! I was hoping the Seahawks would win. I wasn't really heavily pulling for either side, but I always cheer for the underdog, and where I'm from, the Steelers were the bandwagon team, and everyone hates a bandwagon. Ah, better luck next time, Seahawks.
5. Is this whole energy thing a big unsupported theory? I mean, it sounds interesting, but there's no need for the word 'energy' in any of this. I think the whole love thing is plausible, but I don't think that the two partners are giving one another any energy -- spiritual or otherwise. Hypothetically speaking, the two partners would give as much as they take, and as a result, no one would get tired. However, this isn't usually the case, and so one leaves because they're giving too much. Sounds to me like that's not a matter of energy exchange, but rather, a one-sided relationship where one party is sacrificing too much. These sacrifices don't need to be energy -- they could be things like doing the dishes, or compromising. I don't see any expenditure of energy in either of those cases.
6. Great question, Doukeshi. There's no rotating this list -- you go straight down, and if we hit the bottom, then we have to stop until someone else steps up. This allows for people to have a one-time try, and if they end up not liking it (imagine!), they'll never have to go again. I'd also ask that no one sign-up again until they've done their piece, meaning, you're only allowed to sign up again once you've completed your last piece. I hope that was clear. >_> Also, please don't feel obligated to stick with our current color scheme -- it'd be great if we could really mix things up a whole lot. Again, pull out every trick you have under your belt -- it's your time to shine!
7. Eh, if you could post your piece separate from the others, that'd be preferred. It'll make life easier when I'm trying to add a single panel to an already extensive worm. I'm going to be posting the URL to view the worm sometime tonight. Thanks, and I'm sure you're gonna kill'em dead, Jay. EDIT: For clarity's sake, please name your image your respective number -- for instance, mine was one, White's was two, etc. Also the URL to the worm is found here. I'm confident that this link with become extremely image heavy -- caution, 56k'ers.
8. Good luck to you, White. Voting is now open, and will close when it looks like there'll be no more replies.
9. Graphic Worm 2006 I saw the absolute coolest thing on another website, and decided to try it out on OtakuBoards, and see what the artists here cooked up. How it works, is this: Someone (probably me) will start off the ?worm? with an image. Others will continue my picture by juxtaposing their own art next to mine so that it looks like it?s one piece. HERE is an example, because I know my explanation was absolutely horrid. 56k users will suffer on the link ? that is your fair warning. Please note how each image is a continuation of the previous one ? this is what I?d like to attempt. I have hosting that?s willing to support this project, and I will provide a link once I?ve posted the first image. The 2006 worm is here [click]. Rules: - The dimensions you must use are 600 x 450 pixels. Be it pre-made brushes, something you learned from a tutorial, or something hand-drawn, it?s allowed! 10.
[img']http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/6461/brynnbw1fr.jpg[/img]
Do you have the original photograph still? I'd recommend, if you do still have it, that you loosen up the crop so that you get a bit more of the kitty's head. It's my favorite shot of the cat, but it feels really cramped. And yes, your picture of the sky is pretty awesome. I'd recommending giving it cool colors (a very faint blue, perhaps) so that it doesn't look as boring, though.
11. Keiji sighed internally at the odd-job they had been handed. The euphoria of graduating had worn off, and now he looked back at the Academy in nostalgic retrospect. The prize of graduation didn?t live up to the unbelievably lofty hype, and he was left wanting to study at the Academy once more. ?We?re handed the high honor of watching Poochie, eh?? Hart remarked in a sarcastic tone before sulking with Naruto over their ill luck. ?Naruto-sensei, I intend no disrespect, but shouldn?t you be telling us to suck it up, rather than the other way around?? Keiji spoke gently, knowing he was treading on eggshells with his question. He hoped Naruto was merciful and understood what he meant, rather than taking it as an insult. ?Hell no, Miyamoto,? Naruto said, ?Drop and give me fifty,? he added with a smirk. Begrudgingly, Keiji layed on the ground. Much to his surprise, Naruto stood on top of his student. ?Sir?? He was puzzled, to say the least. ?We don?t have all day ? better start now!? It took a few minutes, and Keiji had to use his chakra to make Naruto feel lighter, but he completed his fifty push ups. He hopped off Keiji?s back. ?I?m not gonna go easy on you all ? do you understand? You have the future Hokage training you. Feel honored!? The three students saluted Naruto, who then turned his back and began to walk. ?Follow me ? we?re going on a field trip,? he mused, still the boyish excitement in his voice as he informed his students. Secretly, he hoped they shared his excitement. ??what the hell was all that standing on your back business?? Hart chuckled at Keiji, who ignored him out of annoyance. ?Oh, c?mon ? don?t be such a poor sport!? ?I was being serious was all. Leave it alone, Hart,? Keiji knew he wouldn?t. ?And man, you had quite a t?? ?Oh, cut it out. Don?t be such a child,? Mei interjected with such authority that the two boys went silent for a time. Hart was silent out of fear. Keiji was silent out of admiration. Damn, she?s good. He smiled with hope as the doors to the city swung open and the world opened up to them.
12. Actually, "This Just Got Awkward" was ... awesome. Wonderful job on it. I've noticed that I don't really laugh when I read these, but I do find them amusing. I have no idea why. Could you post like a multi-celled comic one of these days?
13. Well, Tical, I have to hand it to your avatar. The monochrome really works out well. I think my only problem with it would be the quality, but it's not too noticable. Your banner, on the other hand, is very grainy and poor in quality .While the cropping is done well enough, it's not enough to make up for the low picture quality. I'd recommend finding another version of that image, as well as making your avatar and banner match in color. You get a 6.5/10 -- sorry if it sounds harsh.
14.
Currently the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Syria are on fire. I don't know about any casualties, but more than likely there are at least some. All because stupid comics... X(
Are you kidding me? It's all so ludicrous -- burning down embassies just because of a cartoon? I mean, I can understand feeling offended, but this is waaaay past the line of 'reasonable.' It's moments like these that make me wonder if all negatives of religion outweigh the positives.
15. Alright, members, there's a GFX Battle here between me and White. The result will be added to our Club records. However, everyone is allowed to vote, so please check it out once we have our images posted. Also, feel free to challenge one-another to battles. Ask all questions pertaining to it in here. On top of this, Katana has joined our [seemingly inactive] community. As of now, she's not elligible for battles, but still, she's looking to be helpful, so perhaps I'll have a helping hand in Class Time for a change.
16. I already told you what I thought of the title picture on AIM, but KittyCat is superb -- I'll say that. First of all, the cropping job is great. I feel this would've been a bit better if this were grayscale, but that's pretty minor. Finally, the little slashes going across your eye line are distracting. I mean, I see what you were trying to do with it, but the cat's eyes don't really align with yours, so the effect is sort of lost. Good stuff for an amateur. Go read up on the Rule of Thirds -- it'll help you alot as far as making the subject matter look interesting. But it looks like you've already got a natural eye for it, as you cropped this one pretty well (and without the knowledge of the Rule of Thirds, I'm supposing).
17. I think it's excellent on the whole. While you still have the eye placement a bit off, it doesn't really detract from the quality of the picture. The only real problem I have with it, is that I think you oversimplified things -- you got rid of a few lines that really gave his face a good 'vibe,' more notably the chin line (it's a bit too dark -- a lighter line would've done better). I'm glad you're sticking around and posting your art. Keep it coming!
18. Most people seem to dismiss this as something that won't ever come into the hands of the public, or as somethign that's completely useless to commit crime with. I think that's wrong. We've seen things that are supposed to be used in one field creep into another before. I also think that the black market will do nicely for procuring these for criminals. How is it American to think about the sophistication of a currently useless piece of technology? I'd say it's more intelligent than American -- what's so wrong with forethought?
19. Shadetaro, thanks alot for contributing -- I'd just like to point out that the avatar is 20 pixels too large to use on OtakuBoards (maximum dimensions are 150x80).
20. GFX Club Sponsored Battle Retribution v. White In order to vote for this battle, please post two paragraphs (one for each piece) minimum as to why you voted for the piece. Any votes not at least two paragraphs in length will not be counted ? try to make these quality, as we?re not only battling for competition?s sake, but to improve as well. Both pieces will fulfill the following parameters: Dimensions: 450 x 450 px Theme: No theme specified, BUT only typography and custom-made shapes are allowed to be used. Due Date: February 6, 2006, but if both pieces are submitted prior to that date, then voting may commence. Good luck to you, White. :3
21. Right, right, but when I said "Europe" I was basically lumping them together under the assumption they were in fact more liberal and open-minded than America. I never really acknowledged "Europe" or the European Union as a political entity -- just as a region for my own immediate reasons in this conversation. I understand that each area is a different from the next, but on the whole, they are generally accepted (to my knowledge) as more acceptant of difference than Americans. So when I heard of Denmark's newspapers publishing something as racist as this, the myth in my mind was debunked -- whether it's fair or not of me to lump Europe in together wasn't my point. Admittedly, I shouldn't've done it, but I don't really think it matters a whole lot. The main point I was trying to make is: - America's newspapers haven't published something this racist for a while. - Denmark really surprised me with this. - Denmark [apparently] as acceptant as I thought they were. - And yes, only Denmark, my bad people, I shouldn't've lumped Europe in with their lot. As for the reactions to the article -- I can't really blame them all that much when I step back and put myself in their shoes. Yes, at first glance it seems pretty absurd, but I think I'd probably be extremely offended at something equally racist aimed at African Americans. No real telling what I'd do, but I'm not going to dismiss them with a "Cry me a river" attitude.
22.
~Has a secret crush on Miyamoto Keiji (if that's okay, Retri)
I decided to reply to that in this thread -- it's alright with me that your character has a crush on mine. It'll make things interesting, even. :3 So I hope that just about clears things up. And if anyone wants me to edit a post, just IM/PM me, as I probably won't be checking back here too often.
23.
And to Retribution - you say that you can walk down the street and proclaim you hate George Bush and that nothing would happen to you. I beg to differ. He abuses his power all the time - I wouldn't be surprised if he had you detained, or put on the no-fly list. XD Er... yeah. Shutting up.
I'm assuming you're joking about this, with the XD and all, but just to be sure... Bush doesn't detain people solely for saying "I hate you" -- he doesn't detain protesters that are on the Mall, and he'd never detain someone for saying something like that about/to him. Yeah, he abuses his power, but he's not Hitler, for crying out loud. Everyone makes him out to be a Nazi, and don't get me wrong, I'm not fond of him, but I know that he wouldn't go nuts and start detaining people for sneezing.
24. So you drew these on the computer? Did you use a tablet or the mouse? No matter the answer, these are pretty good. The proportions (as far as anime proportions go, anyway) are pretty much spot-on. While you've got slight problems with the boy in blue's right eye (a bit too small, perhaps -- it feels smushed) or the red-head's eyes (being too far apart, slightly), you've still done great. Keep posting!
25. It goes without saying that this is extremely sick. I really thought that Europe was more open-minded than America, but I suppose not. I have yet to see or hear of an American newspaper publishing something as racist as that about those from the Middle East. Denmark really should grow up a bit -- and that's coming from an American (heh).
