1. I'm with our parish's choir. I'm baritone, which is both good and bad. I just wish I could sing as good as Josh Groban though...
  2. I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you are going to blame TV for your bad parenting skills, you have a very big problem. You can also write to her, or maybe the site where it is posted, to air your views. And write to CN as well for support. It's time to knock some sense on delinquent parents who should be raising their kids well, instead of complaining that their kids are turning into monsters because they can't take care of them when they have all the time to rant.
  3. Haven't seen Hamtaro yet, but from what I saw on the DVD covers, the hamsters are kawaii, and that's enough for me to get the DVDs.
  4. Just to add a little tidbit here: Viz will release Hana Yori Dango on DVD by September, and the manga this July. So all you Meteor Garden fans out there (heh, there are legions) will have something to look forward to.
  5. The first actual recorded use of kamikaze was in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines in 1944. This battle was also the last time a battleship fired on another battleship, incidentally.
  6.
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve I could really care less is anime was banned. But anime doesn't kill anyone.
So does toy guns, last I checked.
It's pretty obvious that if that boy didn't have the toy gun he would have not been shot.
It's more the misjudgment of those who shot at him. Now, I do not know the circumstances about the boy and the gun, but let us assume the boy is someone who is 10 years old. Would cops think that someone that age will seriously even consider killing a cop? Descretion should also be used by police in such cases, and the first thing cops should do is to disarm a person, not outright kill him.
It may be a bad comparison, but so is comparing anime to guns.
Not really. What we're behind here is the logic of the move. The premise is that guns kill. We can take it a step further and ask the next question: where did kids learn that guns can kill? Of course, from what they see, such as anime, video games and the like. So put two and two together, and we see where the logic heads to then: children watch TV, see guns, and wants a gun. Children play guns, ergo media shows bad influence. Let's ban those that show such bad influence on children then. And get rid as well of those associated with those influences, like merchandise that comes with it--guns, toys, etc. It's a progression of logic that knows no end, and you can see that it won't stop just at toy guns, but they'll go further to where they think the "source" of violence comes from, and that would be media.
Don't give me that BS about the reason why.
The logic behind it has everything to do with the issue. Why would a ban be called if there's no reason behind it? That would be senseless, and few people will support senseless issues. But make it something bigger, to add more weight, or some semblance of it anyway, then you have a cause, even if the logic is faulty.
Yes guys grow up fine with toy guns... shooting people in schools... robbing the Quickymart, shooting other kids, having 11 millions deaths per year being gun related... if thats what you call fine.
No, your examples show that those who do such things lack parental support and guidance when they were young. Most people who grew up and played toy guns and the like led normal lives, have a family, have decent jobs, and they have kids who also play with toy guns. And those kids will grow up to be like their parents, provided the parents continue that guidance that they had.
If thats your reasoning, then do something about it instead of arguing over toy guns.
That's your reasoning (preventing people from having kids), not mine.
Then do something about it. I do... I make sure my brother takes care of his daughter... and I'm making sure I never have kids.
No, that's the prerogative of individuals, not for the state to decide. Parental guidance is a personal decision, unless you want a police state where everything must be regulated by the state.
  7.
Originally posted by Transtic Nerve Banning toy guns will do absolutely NOTHING to children.
It's not the banning of toy guns per se that's troubling, but the logical next step that comes with it. What repercussions would toy gun banning entail? Would it mean banning violent cartoons as well, as I have mentioned? Banning toy guns is just a step towards that, and if someone would take that logical next step, anime would face the prospect of being banned. And I am sure you wouldn't want that to happen (or else it would be questionable why we're on this message board in the first place).
Girls don't typically play with toy guns and they seem to grow up perfectly fine.
The same can be said about guys then. We seem to have grown fine with toy guns in hand. It has little to do with toy guns, and much more to do with parental responsibility. A negiigent and irresponsible parent will certainly raise the same kind of child, and maybe even worse. The logic behind banning toy guns is the supposed reason that it makes "violent" children. But what makes a child? The toys he possess, or the upbringing he had? Many would agree it's the latter, and not much of the former. Again, it all comes down to parental responsibility, nothing more. Even without toy guns, a negligent parent will still turn up an irresponsible and maybe even a criminal child.
Please... don't have children, this country is bad enough without you as a parent.
Then we are to assume then that you will not let your children share your joy in watching anime, or at least those that you would deem as violent like Gundam and the like, since they involve guns and shooting each other an whatnot? And we can add in as well American cartoons, like Warner Bros. and others which, by the way, show much more graphic violence than your average anime. Please explain to us why most of us have turned out fine watching those cartoons, when the reasoning behind this is that it might turn kids violent?
  8.
Originally posted by Harry I feel sorry for your future children. Your whole "it could possibly maybe hurt them" ideal will completely suck all fun from their lives.
So true. If you ban toy guns, why not ban violent cartoons anyway? Wow, look at that coyote banging that roadrunner with a large hammer! That's violent. We should ban that as well. Maybe we should ban anime as well--Gundam is bad for kids. It shows giant robots firing guns. Guns are bad. The series shows guns. Kids might imitate them. ad infitum. You get the idea. My point is, we played with guns, we watched Warner Bros. cartoons when we were kids; did we turn out violent? Anyone here has suicidal or killer tendencies? It becomes silly when the logic becomes, "Guns are dangerous, even toy guns. They teach violence." No, they do not. It is parental neglect which produces bad kids. You can have them have their toy guns without them turning violent, if only parents fulfill their duty as good parents, and not negligent ones. It is sad when these negligent parents take a 5-second spotlight at the center and blame media, video games, and other things when they're the ones who have not brought their children up very well, and so pass on the blame on others.
  9.
Originally posted by Japan_86 I agree with you. I saw the movie several times on the Action West Channel. The movie was alright, but the music was horrible. It was like music from the 1950's.
Nah, it really fits the movie. Even the song--which, as I understand, is a variation of the opening theme--when
the Ziggurat blew up
in some way fitted it. It's sort of ironic given the context of the scene, really.
  10. Yes, I've seen Trigun, or most of it anyway. The series was shown here on TV awhile back. I'll also get the videos to add to my anime collection.
  11. Been to the RPG, and I skimmed the first page. The spelling's Van, not Vaughn. Somebody should get that right.
  12. Eh, the story isn't that good? Now that's a first that I've heard someone say about that anime. Most I've heard say it's good. And yes, I've seen most of it, I think.
  13.
Originally posted by Domon Okay all in favor of Escaflowne being one of the best Anime please raise your hand and say yes
No objection to that one. For me it's one of the best.
  14. Yes, one of my all time favorite anime series. I really love the opening theme, "Promises Not Necessary" (others list it as "No Need For Promises"). The song really sets the mood for the anime, and it was sung very well by Maaya Sakamoto. Really, a lovely series all in all.
  15. If it hasn't been listed yet, then not too many people have seen To Heart yet. Really, a lovely series (and no, it's not hentai, though it is based on a hentai PC game). Another one that I think few have seen is Grave of the Fireflies. I've also seen the movie for Kimagure Orange Road. Dragon Half is one of the funniest anime I've seen! And yes, Mahou No Stage Fancy Lala is another series that I liked. I guess those are some of the anime that are rarely mentioned.
  16. I like YYH. Not really my favorite (I like Flame of Recca more), but it's okay.
  17. I am Asian, and I wasn't offended by Episode I. Nor by Episode II. There wasn't any descrimination to be seen in the movies. I am not sure why some would say so, but then you're right that some will do anything to be on TV.
  18.
Originally posted by BabyGirl If you delve into the Expanded Universe of Star Wars, then you will find that older literature confirms Owen Lars to be Obi-Wan's brother. It is a common fact that the two are brothers...or should I say it was a common fact?
Well, as noted by many in the main Star Wars board, George Lucas only approved the stories for the EU. He never said he'll follow the EU's stories, or whatever came out of there. Basically, you can throw out the EU for now, up until Episode III anyway, since GL may or may not follow it. It would seem he has his own story to make, which means fans would have to speculate much on how things will go on Episode III. One thing interesting is who made the plans for the Death Star: it was only in the Separatists' hands; it does not necessarily mean someone there made them. Anyway, the point is now you will have to throw out the notion about Owen to be Obi-Wan's brother--well, unless that comes up in Episode III.
  19. I am not sure if GL will remake--once again--the original trilogy, though what seems to be confirmed is that John Williams and GL will finally insert the Imperial March to Episode IV (A New Hope). Of course, it won't be as blaring as that in Empire. Or again, it might, seeing that it is already loud in Episode II.
  20. Lovely, lovely movie! I loved it! Saw it twice already, and that' just for the first day. Will definitely go and see it again. My favorite scene? A lot will probably go for the Yoda duel, and that was really one of the best scenes, ever. But my most memorable one was just after Yoda said that the Clone Wars have begun, when the Clone Army are being sent off to war while Palpatine looks over them, and the Imperial March is blaring. Very powerful scene. It sets the stage for the Empire.

    Spiderman

Overall, I wasn't impressed with Spider-Man. The story isn't really that great. I was more awed with the X-Men than this one. In short, the movie was overrated IMO.
  22.
Originally posted by Rogue Shadows -POSTED BY AIRES: Before watching the last few episodes, WATCH THE MOVIE! It won't make any sense otherwise.
Not really necessary, as I've seen Evangelion and made so much sense of it without seeing the movie. Understanding the series, one should bear in mind that it is an allegory, and most of what is happening there symbolic. The last two episodes actually explain the whole series, so it is best to listen to what the characters are saying. It also should be good to watch the last two over and over, in order to fully understand the series.

Anyway, I workout almost daily, when I'm up to it. I have my own gym at home, and it gets tiring when you workout on your own. So sometimes, I miss some days, which I think isn't good.
  24.
Originally posted by ganon997 ...about these boards. They are powered by Vbulletin. Every forum I have been on that was powered by VB had problems and had to be shut down. They eventually came back up, but with different, more stable boards. Look, I am warning you, people with over a thousand posts are not going to be happy when these forums go down. It has happened to every VB powered board I have been on...just a warning....
Funny, the reverse is what I hear from those who use vBB. vBB is actually one of the most stable boards around. Or maybe you've been sent by Infopop. :D And I see a lot of people with over a thousand posts here. In fact, with a total post count of over 180,000, by what you say this board should've tanked over a long time ago, yet it still remains. And I've been to many vBB boards as well. Again, in fact a lot of servers are banning UBB for it being too reseouce intensive, and many have switched to vBB--thus belying your arguments.
  25. Well, I did encounter celebrities quite often now. Not to sound too proud or anything, but I'm an actor, and I do get to meet celebrities quite often. Not a bigtime actor yet (just starting out), but still...and no, I live in the Philippines, not the U.S., so it wouldn't be much if I mentioned names, unless you happen to be familiar with them as well.
