Anime What anime has the most effect on you?
0ber0n the Neko replied to Panda's topic in Otaku Central
Ooo! I love this question! =_= It can't be my own, can it? OH WELL! I think that one REAL big life-turner for me was Evangelion. That show...it spoke to me like no other before. I watched in horror as all things good and normal in this world were completely swept away in the wake of the ones who were here to save us. The deaths in this were incredible. They made you think of the insignificance of human life, right down to the end
, when Shinji realises what it means to BE significant. Here is a character who was stepped upon and pushed around until he reached the breaking point. He finally understands that everything was in its place. He finds his place, as I did mine.
. Long spoiler, eh? Well, then FLCL springs to mind. Another story of a boy without a place. You never find out if he finds himself, but he realises what it means to be an adult. Then there is the best screenshot of all time! The picture of Naota (Tak-kun) and Haruko's Rickenbacker sillhouetted against the yelllow sky...There is a picture that really said a thousand words...(please...anyone who can find me a decent sized pic of it, do so! Please!) Really, anime has changed my life. It has shown me that all things end with time. We all find ourselves someday. We will all try to do those things that give us pleasure, but we also will all find that pleasure is not enough. Pleasure merely distracts from what is really important in life. Our home. ^_^ well that's enough of me being weird and delusional... Sayanora "The innocence of a child is often the hardest to bear..." -Felicia (from my comic, Genesis) -
Anime What's your Favorite Anime Soundtrack?
0ber0n the Neko replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
Blue - i still haven't seen the episode this comes from, but it always makes me think about death and question what comes after.
It comes from the last episode
where SPIKE DIES
. Yeah you got that death thing right! It really puts lots of stuff into perspective I really liked the song "Rush". It's really fast paced and has such an awesome uplifting beat! Hmmm... I also like "Pushing the sky", and "Cats on Mars" Well Ciao! -
Hello again, everyone! Hmmm...-_-...I wonder what topic would be good for a thread... Right! Which anime soundtrack is your favorite and why? My favorite is the FLCL soundtrack because the band (the pillows) absolutely rocks, and their upbeat tone is awesome, and at times can be breathtaking! I also like the Hellsing soundtrack. It's hard to explain why...it just...speaks to me... Well I hope that was long enough to qualify as an actual post! I will die.'" -Felicia and Yari

Anime Battle of the Pairings (Canon/Yaoi/Yuri/Cross-Series etc)
0ber0n the Neko replied to Patronus's topic in Otaku Central
Hmmm... This one is a major toughie... I think a good couple would be...Excel from Excel Saga and Vash from Trigun. They both seem like they could be tolerant of anything (and hey, with the great will of the macrocosm on her side, Vash wouldn't have to worry about Excel dying!), even each others' goofy antics. They both get very serious (when it is needed) at the right times, and both seem to have almost matching personalities. Now all we have to do is get Ilpallazzo out of the way...
Vash and Excel would make a cool couple, i think. They're both so nuts.
CRAP! oh well, I can come up with another...I think... Aisha (outlaw star) and...hmmm...Spike (cowboy bebop). Opposites attract, after all. Aisha, the wildly passionate, the one with reckless abandon, and Spike, the bad*ss, the absolute cool, calm and collected character. It's so incongrouous, it just WORKS. Aisha would constantly make advances on Spike, and Spike would ignore her, until there was a very akward love scene and THEN Spike would be interested, if only on the inside. Maybe Haruko (FLCL) and Ilpalazzo (Excel Saga). Both bent on destruction! If I could do one from my comic, then probably Jury (Genesis {my comic}) and Excel (Excel Saga). They would make a cute couple. First they would have htred to each other, then they would have a friendship, then absolutely crazy about each other! (PDA's GALORE.) See you all again! "So the skitzophrenic, murderous main character is in love with a hooker whose pimp was her dad...the world is ending, and the only way to beat them is with an army of CRIMINALS!?" -Patrick (my friend) commenting on my storyline... -
I don't believe that such stereotypes could possibly make good characters or a good storyline.
I think you're right... you kinda ARE missing the point ^_^(please excuse me if that sounded rude). Well, the point of this thread is to expand upon your opinions of how a character, described so briefly, can be described very well. I am also trying to use a combination of these four things in my comic book... so this thread is also helping me with character design. It's not often you find a kawaii and bad*ss together in a strong love relationship (or not often as far as I have seen). Also, it's not often that the kawaii character has more potential for power than the bad*ss. I'm using all of this in my comic.
I feel that some deviations are needed in order to produce something original and captivating. It seems to me that in making these stereotypes we're pretty much limiting ourselves to a few common characters found in anime and excluding anything else.
Actually, not true. I am soon going to ask for descriptions of a couple of new types of characters. These types of character are, yes, very often used in anime. But then, so are ALL types of character. You find completely WIMPY bad*sses, average Joes, brainwashed little boys and girls that kill people... There aren't many types of characters NOT used in Anime. Try to define some yourself, Miss Moffet! It's pretty fun! Alright. I think I'll add the next few.

What do you believe makes the following: A Kawaii (cute) girl A Complete Bad*ss An Imposing Villian A Strong Love Relationship A Love Conflict The Essential Character Remember, try to put it in terms of animes and examples from them. I believe A Kawaii girl must be somewhat strong willed, but also very attracted to someone, making them try hard at what they do. They don't necessarily have to be very strong, but they are incredibly devoted to the ones they love. (Excel from Excel Saga) A Complete Bad*ss must be very uninvolved, but very deeply felt inside. Must have a dark or uncertain past. Also must have awesome A** kicking powers or weapons or skills. (Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Vash from Trigun) An imposing villian must be absolutely insane. They must have the will and the means to achieve their evil (and often psychotic) dreams. An imposing villian must also always have a backup plan, and seem to have everything under control at all times. (Vicious from Cowboy Bebop, Folken from Escaflowne) A Strong Love must be very NOT corny. It has to be very inwardly felt. The two involved must have no less than absolute admiration for the other. Often, they will talk of things beyond this world. Often the dominant member will be very inquisitive, and try to spark the other with romanticism and other forms of drama. (Keitaro and Naru from Love Hina) A love conflict is the essential building block of any strong love relationship. It must include more than three characters (love quadrangles are so fun! I should post the love poly...uh...thing...involved in my comic) And it should be absolutely akward and rely on embarassing situations. Getting through the conflicts should bring the two main love interests closer to admitting their love for each other.(Love Hina, Guardian Angel Getten) The essential character for me is the one that, through their sheer genius and inexhaustable energy, brings out the seriousness of the main characters. (Ed from Cowboy Bebop, Su from Love Hina) Well there it is! I hope to see some good responses!

Azumanga Daioh!!! Wow I love that manga...and show(that I haven't seen). I just finished book 3 today in english class. I like the creator's somewhat quaint tone...the story kind of sucks you into itself, and leaves you craving more. I like Chiyo-chan and Osaka. Osaka always has the lines that I wish I could get in a manga... and Chiyo-chan... well...some things just cannot be explained... In any case, this is a wonderfully hilarious manga (I want to see the anime...), and has a very whimsical, gleefully cheerful tone to it. Read it when you get suicidal! 0ber0n, who always has the little people to talk to...

My parents really have serious issues with me watching anime. They think that it affects my schoolwork (Ooh. Watching deep and involving plots is ruining my BRAIN...). They also think that I am antisocial because of it (Avoiding the "Cool Kids" because of their lower intelligence level HARDLY constitutes antisociality...). They try to revoke my anime priveledges as often as possible, and I haven't been ungrounded for (what is it now...) 2 years (I access the computer from school. My parents don't know.). They probably are like the typical american "Anti-Cartoon" parents. They blame everything on TV shows and Comic Books, and nothing on psychological stability, physical and mental stress, etc. To get to the Anime Expo, I had to pay for the gas (we drove), the expo (obviously), half of the hotel room cost (Are they bloody INSANE?), and had to convince them that "Hey, it's my birthday present". Well, I'm done griping for now. My parents aren't horrible. They let me buy anime (as long as they don't have to pay squat for it) and manga occasionally, but they still need to lighten up. Well. Yay. I'm done. I think I'll go off and join a drug ring or something just to SPITE them. Sayanora!

Anime Can you really call it anime when...
0ber0n the Neko replied to Takun's topic in Otaku Central
^_^= Well... Ummm... I really think that anime is anime. In reality, anime isn't just an art style or a country or a tv show. It more of an...uh...attitude. If a particular picture/(animated)tv show/comic book brings out a particular...ah...feeling, ya know. The ANIME feeling, then I consider it anime. Deep plots, smart and witty characters, and lotsa lotsa representation is what makes me think of anime (that and NEKOS! :tasty: ). Most western (I hate using the term "western". I mean, Japan is closer going west than east...) comics and shows really do not impress upon me these things. I think that ONE american made comic actually has the anime feel...Gold Digger (It has NEKOS! :tasty: ). Putting it aptly (and briefly), anime is what anime is to whoever anime is anime to (confusin' eh? ;) ). In simpler terms, Anime is what you make it. I hope that the projects I am currently engaged in are considered Anime...I just don't think the one who made it should determine what it is called. We don't call vietnamese anime "Vietnanime"! (Or Irish anime "Gaelicinimation"{please just don't ask...}) Well I will commence in destroying entire cities. AVOID ALL FIREHYDRANTS. "Fun? FUN? HAVING MY *** HALFWAY BLOWN ACROSS THE CONTINENT IS YOUR IDEA OF 'FUN'!?" -Hiro (from my comic!) -
Hmm... I'm not an astounding artist... I kind of suck... but people tell me my storylines are great! So take from this what you may. Always, always, ALWAYS carry a notebook with you! You never know when that little inspiration kick will come! Daydream about the characters! And always remember: Do not get discouraged! The ONE thing I deal with most is sporatic mood swings. I always come up with a good idea for a manga, and then hate it profusely the coming morning! I set a goal. I have been developing a comic for 2 and three quarters years... It is not even halfway done! I only have the beginning, character development, and a very shaky end... Simply, it takes time! Let it take as long as it must. The last thing however, is CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! If you cannot think of every single possible scenario with every character, you need more Charcter Development! (My studio calls me the development Nazi...) Well if you need more (or better) tips than the ones I gave you, feel free to PM me with questions and ideas! Well seeya!

I like the kind of character with lots of spunk and cute ambition (preferrably female with cat-ears). The kind of character that is squashed easily...Naw, but seriously. I feel that a character does not need to be exactly like me in order for me to relate. The character needs to be real-life, but not in a real-life setting. My kind of character is the kind who seems to be really attatched to something, until it becomes painful to bear. My main character in the manga i am creating has issues like that. He held onto his humanity until it drove him insane. He now has two sides. One, a ruthless killer, the other, well, has a butterfly for a pet... He has a sense of reality to him. A kind of recluse, but he seems open enough about his feelings (very blunt in his phrasing). But you dont want me to get started on that rant... In any case. A character is the only flaw in any story. A perfect story is one without characters (but a perfect story SUCKS!). What a true artist has to do is create a character that is such a sufficient flaw, that it affects the character's surroundings. This is often achieved by creating a universal flaw, like shyness or bigotry (sorry if i spelled that wrong). This can attract some viewers, but it still leaves some out of the loop. The characters that best create a universal setting are, to me, the ones dealing with human emotions as opposed to human attitudes. Nobody is even reading this. I can tell. My favorite characters are the characters without a care in the world, but the reason for their behavior is justified because they want to escape the pain of living without dying. They wish to leave the world alone, and watch the sparks fly... but as always, will get deeply involved in some large event, because humans, by nature, are fascinated by pain. I'll let you linger on that. In the meanitme... I think I'll get me some shut-eye. "Who is pulling the puppetmaster's strings?" -Yari (But I still like the cute neko girls...mmmm... :tasty: :tasty: )

Wow... Hard question... I think I would live in the world of FLCL! FLCL is a really peaceful anime... with lots of wacky fight scenes and FRICKIN AWESOME MUSIC!!!! YA PILLOWS! It just seems like my kinda place. I'd like the robot... Canti rocks. The only thing I'd really have qualms with is the stuff comin' out of my head... that sounds... rather painful... and Haruko scares me... A better one for me would probably be...uh... OOH! Guardian Angel Getten! I am...somewhat of a shojo fan... hehe.... I just like romance stories like that, and it would rock to be able to have a girlfriend as cute as Shao-Lin!!! YAY I'M SHALLOW! Umm... Hmm....that's all for now! See everybody soon! "We have forty seconds to wait and pray...Wow...how ironic...I have forty seconds to live, and have nothing to pray about..." -Sauru

I AM making my own anime! (well.. actually manga...) And it's really long and hard to explkain, but briefly it is about the exploits of a confused protaganist (yari) trying to overcome the mysteries of the world's suspicious roots. He meets (what... lessee...) about 14 other people and they join his party. The only thing that links them? The underworld (the crime of the planet...). Yari must unite the Underworld in an attempt to overrun a corrupt military totalitarianistic government force bent on worldwide communistic rule, and a mad, venegous, rebel faction known as Chimera. Let's not forget the United Trade Federation. The answer to all Yari's questions remain in the Ancients, a race whose ancestors traveled to their planet from our Earth. Yari may not have enough time to save the planet, and the clock ticks. The only question is: You must acknowledge that there are those who pull the puppetmaster's strings... Oooh. Creepy. Anyway thats it! I have a lot more. PM me to find out more... PEACE!

Ooh. I just got the first manga of GSG! All I have to say about it is thus: Wow. :faint: It was absolutely fantastic :excited: ! Yu Aida (sorry if i spelled that wrong... The manga is not on hand right now...) is a splendid writer, and definetely knows how to put hidden meanings into her work! I read the manga at least 30 times on the 7 hour drive back from Las Vegas (Lacrosse Tournament! We got fourth place!)... Well I really cannot give a completely accurate opinion of the series until i have read/seen the entire thing (I'm guessing there's more than just ONE manga...)but I think it really rocks! It is not like some animes that are exclusively for guys or gals, it has lots of action , but also romantics and deep insights upon human thought and emotion  . This is what attracts me to this title, and I hope that you'll give this one a chance!! :excited: :shifty: Nobody suspects the butterfly... :shifty:

I am now in 3rd period study hall and have nothing to do... my other thread is starting t get less response... SO LET'S START ANOTHER! I was wondering recently as to why we, as otaku, watch anime. There are many reasons that one would ultimately want to watch anime. Mine, personally, is the fact that it helps me escape. I get grounded a lot at home, and the only thing i can do to occupy myself is to daydream. I feel that Anime is just a form of visual escape from reality. What are some other peoples' reasons for watching anime? It seems so strange to others that we watch anime. So let's give 'em some good reasons to join us!!!! BLOW THINGS UP!   I call shotgun!

Anime Genre Discussion: Shounen and Shoujo
0ber0n the Neko replied to Dagger's topic in Otaku Central
I dunno. I am usually more interested in Girls' anime/manga (that's weird, cuz im a guy...)! I think that shoujo/shounen really do not say which GENDER is more inclined to watch, but rather what TYPE of audience. I generally like cute furry animals, and for some reason have a strong inclination towards romance and romantic comedy. Almost all three are rare in most shounen anime/manga. Don't get me wrong! I love a good adventure story, and also a couple of things exploding nad people dying and stuff. But I like anime that makes you think. Generally those are the ones that are not directed at a specific gender. Well, that is my thought process upon this... BLOW STUFF UP! Go to heaven. We eat chocolate here...:hippy: -

0ber0n the Neko replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
Let's try not to get off-topic, 0ber0n. There's a pretty decent recommendations-type thread located here; perhaps you might find it to be of interest. ~Dagger~ Hey, wasn't Witch Hunter Robin made by Studio Bones? But then again, I AM clueless... Maybe i misinterpereted (I'm almost positive I have) that list... anyway Just a quick almost unrelated question! I'm thinking about buying an entire anime series... and I'd like to know some people's favorites! Get some debate going about it! Maybe this thread can have TWO topics, and maybe it will become supreme ruler of all threads!!!! AHAHAHAHA!!!! Just kidding for those who took me seriously... I felt like this smiley spoke to me... Mmmm... violence... Well, that was short... Nothing evil can be said about the easter bunny. He's like the perfect image of, like, perfection... Now if christmas is about the birth of Christ... Then why do they have a big fat guy with a criminal record run that holiday, while the easter bunny has to deal with Christ's death? Isn't that kinda...ya know...sacreligious? :twitch: :twitch: :twitch: -
Well, nudity in anime is a very touchy subject. Many people believe it is for visual appeal. Many believe it is for, as many people have stated here, part of making a more real and believable character. Some believe its because the Japanese are a bunch of perverted weirdos. My personal thoughts on this are as follows: Nudity in anime, in terms of purpose, is used for many things dependent upon the situation/storyline. Many popular manga-kas have stated that they gave large *ahem* anatomies to certain characters because they, themselves, thought it was personally funny. It may also add to the akwardness or sense of embarassment of a scene (while many of my friends are sitting there screaming "MAKE HER TURN AROUND!"). It is also used to develop the certain *cough cough perverted cough* interests of a character, or the peeves of a certain other character. It is also (yes, my friends will agree with me on this) used for visual appeal (now they're cheering...) in certain situations. It can be used to make noticable a certain trait (sean says "B**B SIZE!") or mark on a character's body...or just cuz the manga-ka derives such pleasure in nudity that they just HAVE to add it in. I really think that some is necessary, while other types are just stupid... Me and God were watching Cowboy Bebop in Heaven's Living Room! :hippy:

Anime Studios [Gainax, GONZO, Madhouse, etc.]
0ber0n the Neko replied to 0ber0n the Neko's topic in Otaku Central
I've been consciously watching anime for about 15 years now. There's too many to count and I honestly don't feel like listing a million and one names that I really couldn't even remember without hunting through my tapes and DVDs (most of which I've already sold) heh. It's not as if I've not given these things a chance. I've seen some anime by each of these companies and they're all familiar to me, outside of one that Dagger mentioned.
Oh? Then forgive me for stating otherwise!! (Man... I haven't even LIVED that long...) Hmmm... Well at least you aren't like half the kids in my school, who talk trash about anime when they haven't seen more than an episode of "Pokemon" (sorry, guys, but that show just was NOT necessary...The games are fun... but that show....eeeer....)
In any case, I'm not a big fan of anime anymore and 95% of what I bother to watch doesn't appeal to me at all for whatever reason.
Oh... no longer an anime fan? Well that's too bad! I guess you kinda got caught up in the monotony of it all! (personally that's why i like it! BRING ON THE BORING!)
Ghibli stuff is pretty much the only thing that has remained a constant interest for me, most likely because of its similiarites to Disney-style work rather than most popular anime lately.
Aren't a lot of Ghibli's projects in some way (either production or staff or otherwise) in some way related to Disney? (If I'm wrong, don't yell at me because I'm normally kept out of the loop {Well...don't yell TOO hard...}). Ummm... hmmm... Does anyone here know what studio(s) (yes i am aware that over 20 series exist) made Gundam? More specifically, Gundam Wing? Man that show rocked. Further, which studio did Generator Gawl come out of? I saw the first episode... that one looks to be pretty good. Well I think that's all! Santa Claus went to Hell for going into little Boys and Girls' houses in the middle of the night with a big sack.
I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make, but I'm speaking from my own perspective. It doesn't really matter to me who likes what. The only studio that puts out anime I'm consistently impressed with is Ghibli. I wasn't trying to say that others shouldn't bother naming other companies they feel the same about.
Well I have a small question... How many other animes from other studios have you seen? (not to be rude or anything, but if you had little experience in other studios, that MIGHT be the cause of you unimpressment...ing...) Miyazaki is very good, borderline genius, but i find some of his titles a little TOO heartwarming :rotflmao: *pops*... Although so many of his are so good, its hard to tell what his potential for storywriting is... With other studios, you get a few kinda stupid and pointless animes -_- , and then you get blasted with an amazing and immersive story :excited: ! You ought to try some of the titles mentioned here! I know i will! :D Anyway... wow... I posted this yesterday...and its already a hot thread... that astounds me... THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR AWESOME CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS TOPIC! Keep posting! I've seen some of the new titles (if only previews and trailers) suggested and they look interesting! I wish to see these titles through and hope you guys out there will keep posting!!! .hack//sign was pretty good! I saw almost the entire series, and its only flaw was that it was really short! The other flaw (made by cartoon network) was that it was on Saturdays only...so i felt like i got a 10 minute show every saturday... But off that, i've heard Noir is a good series, but i have no idea what its about... can anybody clue me in? But try to keep it short, as i don't want to start a repeat of the Evangelion issue...except with a show ive never seen... Well! Bye now! Sugar leaves and dumpling trees in heaven...:hippy: -

Yeah! Miyazaki is almost a revolutionary, because you don't get all the traditional stuff! None of the outfits are overly extravagant, he keeps things simple...ya know...more down to earth... He endeavors to have us relate to his characters, and also to his stories. Truly a master. Yep. sorry i just get really hot-headed about NGE... I will halt my continuation of the rant! Hmmm... so far we have Madhouse, Ghibli, and Gainax... but we need MORE! Let's try to get as many studios named as possible!!! There's yogurt clouds and frosting water in heaven... :hippy: -
"OMG! OMG! Deep, Biblical references!" and even sadder when this fan is a follower of the Bible. Talk about gullible... Ok...
Sorry to nag on you again, Azure... but i really do resent that comment. I, myself being a devout Christian. I am not angry, but i'd really appreciate it if you would keep such comments to yourself. :nono: Sorry. Also I have read much of the bible, and i can see many of the references within it. So, there really ARE deep biblical references. And yes, also much of Jewish Philosophy/Torrah (my friend who saw it with me is Jewish) I'm not too sure on the Greek stuff, but the name is the literal translation for some book of Grecian religion (although as to which one i haven't the slightest! ). What you may find interesting, however is the fact that many of the themes in Evangelion are from cults (one of the angels was represenative of an attack by a fanatic cult group who attacked a train station! ITS TRUE!). Also many of the angels were created from their biblical descriptions (the first one that appears, the one in the volcano, and the one that looks like a swirling beam of light, to name three of them.) But nobody wants me to get on a rant on Evangelion, so lets kinda work our way off subject shall we? What other shows are you into? Are there any studios not mentioned that someone would like to mention? (bear in mind that i am basing my future anime viewing on suggestions from this thread!) Well i must now return to heaven! :hippy: -
Oh, that was beatiful. *cries* Just for that, you are my new favorite OBer, even if you just joined (welcome, btw). The same can be said of Evangelion: it had Biblical references soley for the sake of having Biblical references. That is, religious symbols within Eva served no purpose and could have been removed with no impact to the story. What's even funnier about this vain aspect is the fact that the references made are closer to Jewish Mysticism than the Bible. It's ridiculous when you see an Eva fan running around, "OMG! OMG! Deep, Biblical references!" and even sadder when this fan is a follower of the Bible. Talk about gullible... Ok...
Actually, Azure, there was much significance to the biblical references, cult references, and even some psychology. You see, much of it came to create the characters. You know, make them more REAL. I am currently working on a comic with me and some of my friends, and most of the time is spent making it as true-to-life as humanly possible (except it's REALLY REALLY fantasy... )! In any case, many of the references are indispensible! In fact (this isn't a spoiler) Rei, Asuka, and Shinji are all represenative of the three divisions of the human psyche (Sigmund Freud's whole theory)! We also have the reference of The NERV symbol, which is represenative of original sin (fig leaf)! I know of many many more, but i will contain myself for the moment! Well i will escape yet again into my place of eternal wonder... :hippy: Peace! :bash: Yeah!
