As for me I like to watch both. If there's a manga I'll read that too b/c then it's like getting 3 different stories about the same characters. If there's a series you really love, like for me Sailor Moon, you can experience more of it and get more insight into what the people involved in its creation, animation, subbing, and dubbing were trying to get across to the audience. I think subtitled shows are more true to the actual Japanese dialogue which can sometimes be confusing but is still worth the effort it takes to read and understand it all. Some dubs are good, some dubs are bad but the best thing about them is you can really experience the artwork of the anime and see all those little visual jokes and asides that you might miss if you were busy reading subtitles.

Social clashes--online vs offline
sailor firestar replied to Godelsensei's topic in General Discussion
hmm...offline I think I am in a part of society that should be respected (teachers) but I am somewhat misunderstood and looked down on by some of my colleagues b/c of my age and my policy of not treating children like they are inferior to adults. Online I think I tend to be more bold and say things I wouldn't normally which may have gotten me off to a bad start with certain people around here. I had pretty much decided to steer clear of any thread that wasn't directly anime or manga related but maybe this will help me out a little. :wigout: -
Anime What anime has the most effect on you?
sailor firestar replied to Panda's topic in Otaku Central
Well, some of you may think i'm a cheesy little girl but my two all time favorite animes are still Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth. Both of these shows have main characters that have inspired me to look at myself in a new way. When I first watched Sailor Moon I thought, "Oh I'm just like Usagi!" b/c I'm friendly and whatever else but then I watched Magic Knight Rayearth & I thought, "Oh I"m just like Hikaru" b/c I'm optimistic and outgoing and such. But then I watched Magic Knight Rayearth 2 and I realized, "Oh I'm justl like Hikaru b/c I hate myself" and got ahold of Sailor Moon Stars and realized, "I'm nothing like Usagi, she's soooo unselfish!" So, now I think I am like Hikaru & I want to be like Usagi (just not so dumb) and I try to remember those two characters and their personalities to help me be a better person every day. Every time I watch the 2 shows from start to finish (which takes a pretty long time) I get new opinions about it though. -
I would like to live in the Excel Saga universe and help ACROSS take over the world, I mean city. Sometimes though I feel like I am already living in the Kodocha universe & I am Miss Mitsuya. OK, my kids don't treat me that badly, but man are they wild in that last year of elementary school!

Anime What's your favorite anime quote?
sailor firestar replied to ElrickOtaku's topic in Otaku Central
Ok, I know everybody has a quote on their site and a signature with all kinds of cool quotes, but that actually gave me the idea for this topic. I have a favorite quote from Outlaw Star. In the second or third episode Gene is asking Hilda about what kind of people outlaws are because he can't decide if he wants to trust her or not. She says, "Well, it's just like it is with the stars. There are bright ones and there are those that are dim." in this nonchalant kind of way & I totally love it! What are your favorite quotes and why? What about the character or anime they come from speaks to you? I can't wait to hear your responses! :excited: I merged your thread with our most recent anime quotes topic. If future posters follow your example and write well-thought-out replies, then I won't have any qualms about keeping this open. ^_^ ~Dagger~ -
Anime Wow... they're just like me!: Characters you identify with
sailor firestar replied to Balinese's topic in Otaku Central
Well, I could think of lots of characters that I feel like I am like in some ways but lately I have been feeling a lot like Hikaru, especially during the second season of Magic Knight Rayearth. She tries so hard to be strong for everyone else's sake and ends up neglecting her own inner feelings of doubt. This of course causes a lot of problems for everyone in the long run. I'm just lucky I don't have any little Novas running around (besides my cat). Learning to love yourself is a difficult thing for most people, but it's especially hard when you feel like you've done something wrong. Another character I identify with is Melfina. She's got similar issues but is less outgoing. That's how I have been lately since I moved to a new place. :crying: I don't think I could ever be a deep or mysterious character like Hilda, or someone determined and strong like Relena Peacecraft, but I always like to aspire to the kind caring type like Sailor Moon. -
Anime Old threads that shouldn't have been revived.
sailor firestar replied to a topic in Otaku Central
Well, I love all the couples who've been mentioned so far just about but one that I noticed only once is Yukari/George from Paradise Kiss. Something about their two personalities and the way they clash but mesh at the same time makes them so great to read about! :D -
I think manga should stay the way it was originally created. It's more authentic that way. People may worry about new readers having trouble but in my short tenure as a teacher I've turned several kids on to it. Three of my current students have subscriptions to Shonen Jump and with no prior experience are able to read right to left with ease. It's not that hard to learn once you try. And they're only ten!

The next thing I started reading after that was SMILE magazine published by Tokyopop which at the time included Peach Girl (still one of my faves) Juline, & Sailor Moon Stars. The comic shop owner recommended it to me b/c he knew I was into Sailor Moon. I stuck with it for a while & it has since yielded such great Shoujo titles as Mars, Planet Ladder, & Paradise Kiss (my latest fave). Also, by the time I started reading the Sailor Moon manga I was already watching a lot of other anime courtesy of some kids I babysat so when I noticed they were in print form too I started picking them up. Then I got my subscription to Animerica & after that I always knew what was coming out & would make the comic shop order it for me. Of course the only reason that I, a 20 year old girl at the time, would have been ok walking into a comic shop in the first place was because I used to read my little brother's SpiderMan & X-Men comics in junior high and high school. Oh yeah, one reason I think girls read manga is because girls simply like to read. Guys like to play video games or do physical things more often than just sit around and read. Also, there's a certain beautiful quality to all manga, but especially shoujo, that appeals to girls.
yeah, you can create worlds if you get to the highest celestial degree of heaven, but there's nothing anywhere about some 'secret name' for your 'multiple wives' or something, lol. Oh, I know they outlawed polygamy over 100 yrs ago but I'm pretty sure that when you go to the temple at 18 you get another name and can only tell it to your husband or wife when you marry them in the temple. People under 18 aren't supposed to know about it though b/c they haven't been. My mom was never very good at keeping secrets. Anyway, yes, ideally you should choose your religion based on its beliefs. For me none of the ones I have been a part of were right for many reasons but I still have friends in all of them. :)

Oh how I love making people think! Sorry if I got your birth year wrong...I only glanced at it along with a few others. Well, I think I'm done with this topic for today. In fact I am an adult with adult responsibilities like lesson plans, papers to grade, clothes to wash and dinner to cook. Don't let my Sora-like ways torment you too much tonight! :p
I won't give you a break because you're 24. You're a freaking teacher.
To you dear reader I say herein lies the root of the problem. Teachers are people like everyone else. My mom's students used to freak out when they saw her in the grocery store b/c they didn't even realize she ever left the school. Did you know that in Colonial America teachers weren't even alliowed to get married? They were practically like nuns! I don't know what your teachers have been like but all the ones I work with think of it as just a job. :smirk:
Hm. Lenin was an idealist and a visionary and look where that led.
No darling, Lenin was a social revolutionary. He did things. And in case you haven't been paying attention I've clearly stated that none of you are in any danger of being (mis)educated because of me. Entertain some ideas of anarchy for a change. You know where I got them? My 74 year old Educational Theory professor during my Masters' degree. Don't knock it till ya tried it. :p

You should have some way of supporting everything you say. All your opinions should be solid; they should be based in fact. Not so young grasshopper, if everything were based in fact where would new ideas come from? I'm not saying I can't defend myself, I find it unnecessary when I'm not really trying to accomplish anything. I come here for entertainment not drama. Of course, there are advantages to apathy. You can't make me mad, just make me think which is a welcome change. Adults are so dreary & while I love my fifth graders for their purity you high school kids have so much more passion. :smirk:
-
Apathy- 1. Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference. 2. Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness. Sounds like you?d make a great teacher? Anybody who makes comments like that isn't trying to debate something, they're trying to hurt someone. But, as I apparantly did not make clear earlier, I don't debate my ideals. They're mine to have as are your opinions. Maybe it's sad that I've lost the passion to change the world but in the long run, it's realistic. Anyway, If I'd known message boards were such a source of contention I'd never have joined one in the first place. :(
