Anime Subs (Japanese voices with subtitles) or Dubs (English voices)?
QuincyArcher replied to Bloodseeker's topic in Otaku Central
Could it be that since you're not a natural speaker of the language it's harder for you to identify bad acting? In English is particularly easy to find a bad actor since your ears are trained to spot somebody lying to you. In Japanese, though, you don't understand the language or intonations that are unique to a culture. This might impede your identification of a poor Japanese actor. Therefore, you may be enjoying the series more because you don't understand it, rather than the reason being the acting.
True, English is my native language. But one thing that goes beyond language is emotion. And when there is a lack thereof in someone's voice it tends to stick out. And yes, since English is my native language i can tell very well when there isn't any emotion in the voice to back up the lines and the character being read. I also have a very high comprehension with japanese and i find that anime sounds much better to me in it's natural form. In the same way i would find it ridiculous to watch my favorite american-made movies in any other language than english. I'm not ruling out that every single english dub in anime is bad nor am i saying that every single japanese seiyuu is good. But from my experience a good majority of them are, a lot of it really depends on the quality and experience of the voice actors themselves. -
Anime Subs (Japanese voices with subtitles) or Dubs (English voices)?
QuincyArcher replied to Bloodseeker's topic in Otaku Central
I'm a complete Sub-snob. i've gotten to the point where i completely refuse to watch anything with the english dub, i wont even give the dub a chance unless i catch the series on TV and don't have a choice (and in most of those instances i get sickened and turn it off). Personally the only decent quality dub i've come across is for Neon Genesis Evangelion, but i still prefer the original Japanese with subs. I really don't know why i hate the dubs so much, but i think it just sounds much more natural in the original japanese and i have yet to find an english voice actor who can portray emotions as well as the original japanese voice actors/actresses. I also can't stand how they pronounce names in the english dubs. -
I haven't had a chance to watch the anime series but i have read the first 3 volumes of the manga. Since it is by Ken Akamatsu, it is extremely similar to Love Hina which i consider a good thing. The characters are all very diverse and likeable, and Akamatsu does a great job of keeping the series from becoming redundant. I have heard a few things about the anime and seen a few screens of it and the art style looks very different from Akamatsu's and unlike Love Hina, apparently Akamatsu himself does not have a role in the production of the anime (which i really hate when that happens.) so i'll probably just steer clear of this one. But i would still highly recommend the manga.

Manga What is the funniest manga that you have read so far?
QuincyArcher replied to WhiteAoiFox's topic in Otaku Central
I have read quite a few manga, Azumanga Daioh was really funny and so is Fruits Basket. But i would have to say one of my favorites is one that i stumbled upon recently which is Ichigo Mashimaro. It's only 3 volumes long and it's kinda an overly cutesy kinda manga about the everyday lives of these 4 girls between the ages of 12-16. But its also hilarious. Plus the creator is a big Radiohead fan and puts in a lot of hidden references to the band which was a nice bonus for me. -
I really have to agree with Generic NPC #3, There are a lot of series' that i'll watch just the first episode, or even just part of the first episode and never go back to it again. Though i really don't think they i could label them "Really bad anime" because pretty much every anime has it's legion of followers whom the series was made for, and some may just not appeal to me or be able to hold my attention for long enough. A few examples of these would be: Full Metal Alchemist, i honestly gave this series a shot but a lot of the concepts and characters just don't seem all that interesting to me. One Piece, to me this series just looks overly goofy. Bleach, im probably the biggest fan of the manga that you'll find. But the anime really disappointed me, it really doesn't have the same Kubotite touch that the manga has. i got up to about episode 16 before i just couldnt take it anymore. InuYasha, like FMA i tried to give this series a shot, but the storyline and characters all seemed fairly bland to me. Also i actually watched Super Milk Chan a few times on adult swim and i actually thought it was pretty funny. It's different from other anime, and im definately not gonna go out and buy it or anything. But i wouldnt consider it as bad as so many people are saying.

I would have to say the fight with Lavos at the end of Chrono Trigger is one of the most memorable for me and easily one of my favorites. I remembered beating lavos in the form of every other past boss from the game and then lavos' true form thinking i had won.
only to see the shell open up and shout "oh crap! theres more?!"
Added spoiler tags. - Desbreko
Holier than thou attitude? I can't say that I remember anything even resembling that with Naru. Could you give me an example?
Well the fact that she belittles and insults Keitarou in pretty much every single episode (not to mention the excessive punching in the face). She misunderstands pretty much every situation. She puts up a tough front and tries to hide or deny her feelings for Keitarou, and yet whenever he even talks to another female she again insults him, calls him a pervert and/or gives him the cold shoulder for no apparent reason. Her character gets better toward the end of the series, but not by much and then she starts all over for the Love Hina Again movies. Honestly i don't see much to like.

I've only watched the R.O.D mini series and haven't gotten around to watching the TV series yet. so i really have no idea who Anita is. I have watched Love Hina a couple times through but at the same time Naru was one of my least favorites in the series. Her Holier-than-thou attitude and constant indeciseiveness always annoyed the crap out of me. But then again since i know zilch about anita i'll just vote for Naru.

If she just suddenly changes her email without telling you and/or doesn't respond to your emails. you may wanna take that as a hint.... :animeswea Women can be non-confrontational like that sometimes...

In this match I am going to have to side overwhelmingly with Lucy. I have watched both .Hack//Sign as well as the Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, and both were good series' on their own merits. But I have not played any of the .Hack games, and in the animes Helba plays a very small, one sided background role. So theres really not enough substance there for Helba's character to pick her over Lucy. And like Bloodseeker said "There was never a huge revelation of her character, never a look at her orgins, nothing was done to tell you anything about her..." On the other hand. I have watched Elfen Lied several times through and one of the things that i liked most about Nyu/Lucy is that even though they are the same person, each personality is the exact polar opposite of the other. Nyu is very innocent and infantile, but also very caring and generous. Then on the other side Lucy is very deeply tormented, was very violent and filled with anguish and remorse, while still a good person deep down. Another thing that i liked, is that later in the series you come to learn that
When Lucy first meets Kouta during her childhood, her personality is essentially a combination of both Nyu and (adult) Lucy.
Count another vote for Nyu/Lucy.

Anime Samurai Champloo [from the creator of Cowboy Bebop]
QuincyArcher replied to Dagger's topic in Otaku Central
Well, I've gotten hooked on Champloo. One of my favorite parts is the opening. Does anyone know where I can d/l the song or, even better, d/l a movie of it?
If you're referring to the opening theme. the song is called "Battlecry" and it's performed by the Nujabes & Fat Jon, if that helps your search at all i'd rather not post a link of any kind. Anyways i caught the second ep of Samurai Champloo earlier today on adult swim, i didnt even know it had started airing on TV yet so it was kinda a nice surprise. I will never watch an anime with the english dub by choice when watching anime off a dvd so this gave me a chance to hear the dub. All of the voice actors seemed to do a pretty good job tho i didn't really like Fuu's voice actress (mainly because no one can replace Kawasumi Ayako....ever!) and Mugen's voice doesn't have the same bite that it does with it's japanese counterpart, but all in all a pretty good dub. -
Anime favorite and least favorite anime songs
QuincyArcher replied to ChibiHorsewoman's topic in Otaku Central
Hmmm. As for my favorite anime themes, I really liked Orange Range doing the opening theme for Bleach. I didn't care too much for the opening or closing themes in Samurai Champloo, but the music during the episodes were great. Tracks like "Tsurugi no Mai" and "World without Words" to name a couple. School Rumble also had really catchy opening and closing themes, I had the closing theme by Yuuko Ogura stuck in my head for weeks. And although its not an anime (it's a game for the PS2) Katamari Damacy had a mindblowingly good soundtrack, i even went out of my way to import the CD. As for bad soundtracks, im really flexible with my tastes in music so i really haven't found one in an anime that i thought was horrible. -
... or a bland android whose entire purpose in the series is to sit around being obliviously cute?.. Nyu >>> Chi, by the way.
Obviously spoken like a person who has not watched the series, True i did base my vote mainly on the fact that i have not watched much FMA, nor do i know who Winry is. But i also do not go and bash the series because of it. Chobits is a very different kind of series and has more of an aquired taste and it is also very much a romance series. Chobits places a very heavy emphasis on character development to the point where the developement of all the central characters is the center of the story itself, rather than some major outlying conflict. Chii's purpose in the series in not to 'sit around and be cute' (while her cuteness may be part of the draw of the series) her purpose in the series is her own personal growth as well as the growth of the relationship between herself and Hideki. I also have no idea why you threw in the "Nyu >>> Chi" comment. Nyu is completely unrelated to this topic and furthermore they are completely different characters with completely different backgrounds and characteristics. While i would agree that Elfen Lied is a stellar series and Nyu/Lucy is an excellent character. it is nevertheless completely unrelated and apparently just a shallow stab at Chii.
What's up with all of you people that have never watched Fullmetal Alchemist!? Do yourself a favor and tune in at 1:00 am on Cartoon Network if you ever get the chance! Or record it! FMA is too awesome to pass up!
My brother watches FMA all the time on cartoon network and i try to sit down and catch it every now and then but it really just isn't my cup of tea.

Gaming Final Fantasy 7 Tech Demo for PS3
QuincyArcher replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
It would be really nice if they were remaking FF7. But if you watched the sony E3 conference, right after they showed the tech demo, the president of Square Enix (i forget what his name is) stated that it was merely a tech demo for the PS3 and that they have "No plans to remake Final Fantasy 7 for the playstation 3". -
Hmm. one that i would change would be Aoi and Koaru from Ai Yori Aoshi, i would have been a lot more satisfied with the series if their relationship
hadn't remained secret until the very end, i would have liked to have seen it go somewhere and maybe show into the future what happens between them.
Another one would be Mahoro and Suguru from Mahoromatic. At the end when Mahoro
sacrifices herself and Suguru is forced to endure 20 years of lonliness is just way too depressing of an ending.
though i guess the 'Summer Special' movie sorta redeemed that ending.

Im gonna have to vote for Chii mainly because i've never really watched FMA. i've seen a couple episodes but it never really appealed to me, and also because Chobits is one of my favorites series'. Probably what i liked most about Chii is how much she develops over the course of the series. She starts out essentially the same as an infant without much common sense nor the ability to communicate and she mimicks everything Hideki does. But gradually she learns various things in each episode and by the end of the series she has a very unique character with lots of hilarious and loveable quirks.

Just picked up vol.1 and the collectors box earlier today, i had it preordered at a local Suncoast and got it for $29.99 and i had a little $5 off coupon thing so i got it for $25 all together. For something from ADV im slightly unimpressed with the whole package. The artwork is mostly pretty plain on the box and dvd case, just a bunch of smatherings of blood and a couple pictures of Lucy/Nyuu. Not much in the way of extras on the dvd either, But i guess i can't complain... the series itself isn't hindered in any why by stuff like that. I still prefer Geneon's releases, they tend to put a lot more effort into the artwork on the boxes and cases as well as the DVD menus.

I just got finished watching the videos for both the Xbox360 and PS3 press conferences, and although i have been a very heavy xbox supporter in the past, I came away much more impressed with the PS3 than the Xbox360. After watching the conference video i thought that the xbox conference was talking much more to stock shareholders rather than gamers themselves, it and talked more about their goals for the system rather than the system itself. whereas the PS3 conference focused on showing the capabilites of the system as well as showcasing real live game footage (i thought the rubber ducky demonstration was hilarious). Also with the PS3 conference, they really put the capailites of PS3 into terms that the i could understand, where as the xbox conference seemed to avoid the raw data and facts about the xbox360 all together. I was amazed that the RSX video processor for the PS3 has equal processing power to that of two Geforce 6800 Ultras!! (they retail for about $500 each people!). Though there was one thing that really got me exited about the xbox360, and that was that they finally got Square Enix on board as a developer for the console. but then again, the FFVII tech demo they showed at the PS3 conference almost made me wet my pants. So if you ask me, i think sony has won this round.

If i had to choose between never seeing a new anime again, or never being able to watch all my old favorites again. I think i would stick with the anime i've got, I own a fairly massive collection of anime on dvd and i am constantly rewatching every series i own and every series i own i have watched at least several times through. Although there are many great new series' popping up all the time in japan, none of them are still quite as good as the classic series' that pioneered and revolutionized each of the genres. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop to name a couple.

I modded my xbox well over 2 years ago with an executor2 pro chip (the one with about a billion wires to solder) as well as the whole shabang like setting up the evox OS as well as putting in a 80gig HD. I also had a pretty nice setup with XBMC so i was able access the anime off my PC and play it on my TV through my xbox. But lately aside from burning the occasional game to the HD i havent done much with it.

I think just any game with a really good storyline can be really addicting, you keep saying to yourself "ok once i get this thing done, im gonna stop" but then the story takes another twist and you have keep going to see what happens. Games like the Final Fantasy series, the Metal Gear Solid series or even games like Half-Life 2. Im the same when i watch anime, i always tell myself im just gonna watch 1 or 2 episodes but before i know it i've blown through half the series in one sitting.

The first night i'd probably be jet-lagged to hell and back, so i'd probably find the pachinko parlor nearest to my hotel and just go play till i pass out. Either that or i'd go to Akihabara

It really depends what kinda game you're looking for, Although they can both technically fall under the action/horror genre Resident Evil is much more action oriented and most of the real meat of the story takes place is the background, and Resident Evil uses jump scare tactics like Zombies ramdonly jumping out at you through the windows, walls, etc when you least expect it. Whereas Silent Hill is way more story driven with less emphasis on action, Silent Hill also uses much more psychological scare tactics such as using the environment to make you think that something is there and so on. Although both are great series' in their own respects i prefer the deep twisted storytelling of Silent Hill.
They need to make a movie of Silent Hill
in regards to that, read this: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/adventure/silenthill4theroom/news_6123131.html though im a bit skeptical as to how it will turn out.

well only one i can think of off the top of my head would be the "dude with sunglasses" catagory, which would be Harima from School Rumble. i whipped up a couple pics real quick, hope it helps ya.

I drive a dark green 1990 Audi Quattro. I paid a whole $1050 for it a year and a half ago and it still drives pretty well. Though unfortunately the gas gauge doesnt work, so i have to go by mileage. I can only lock the car from the outside on the passenger side door (no idea why..) and sometimes the CD player refuses to take my CDs forcing me to listen to the propagand...err radio :animeangr
