People here aren't very nice to new comers, i should know they weren't very nice to me.
I'll have to disagree with that. The people here were very nice to me when I joined. I think, that people will only not be nice to people who don't read the rules or are incoherent. For example, this is an illegal thread (intro threads are discouraged in the rules) and that's why nobody posted here.
The little blue thing in the corner is what people would click on if you give a bad or rude or offence post, i think if you get so many you get chucked off or something.
The little blue thing beside your name means you're online. If it's grey, it means you're offline. If you click a person's blue/grey box you can send them private messages, visit their homepage, add the person to your list, or view their public profile. It doesn't have anything like Duoikari says. -ArV
Now for the topic of overated animes, DBZ is definatley not the worst anime out there, but isnt exactly the phenomenon it is made out to be.[/size']
DBZ started out as Dragon Ball. And although the anime involved a lot of wind blowing, I think the Manga was pretty well done. Actually, I think Akira Toriyama was a great mangaka. The series just doesn't translate very well into TV. Also, remember how old it is. It was a phenomenon back in the eighties.
Pokemon and Beyblade, I really dont see the appeal in these to. In pokemon its as simple as travle from town to town, beat some freaky dude in a gym, get some pokemon, and make team rocket blast off again. Beyblade, Spinning tops! More spinning tops![/size']
Remember who the target audience is. Your argument for this is just like saying Blue's Clues sucks because it's always the same. Well, it may suck for you, but it's educational and fun for the kids. Pokémon is fun for the kids and teaches morals. I just don't think you should go around insulting a series without taking account who it was meant for. If it was meant for children, don't expect it to be Shakespeare. I do believe there are overrated Anime out there though. An example is Inuyasha. I believe the series is overrated by dubbies who believe it's the greatest series in the world. It's an ever lasting journey that never changes, and worst of all, is predictable and boring. >.< But that's my opinion only, I might have to watch more episodes to have a less biased approach. An underrated anime is Mobile Suit Gundam. The newer Gundam series, mainly Gundam Wing and Gundam Seed are widely accepted by fans because the animation is pretty new. Though, the older series has the same emotional punch (with less soap opera influence) and was good enough to spur a hundred sequels. I think it's biased against because of the animation. -ArV

I'm supposed to graduate this year. It's entirely my fault that I fell behind. If I wasn't so lazy, I would probably be leaving school with my friends. It's depressing seeing them leave you behind. Ah well, at least I can sit on the niners (freshmen) next year. -ArV

Dunno much about eating. Big city, lots of restaurants. Some too expensive for me, some too full of scary biker people. 1.) I eat at the restaurant across the street from my school. The main reason is proximity. The second reason is my friends' lust for Japanese food. Edit: Oh, it's called Haruba 2.) There are a lot of malls downtown. But, again because of proximity, I go mainly to Pacific Mall. Asian mall with illegal DVDs, Playstation Games, and fake Anime merchandise made in Taiwan. ^^ 3.) Visit? Depends on your interests. The parks are nice. I particularly like Milikan Park. It has a pond, a forest, and a large, large field for kites. They have a kite festival every year. ^^ 4.) Uh. I guess go downtown. There are lots of unique places along the harborfront. 5.) Stay away from my house. I haven't cleaned my room so it's messy. ^^ -ArV
How long is it?
I've read two volumes, and I know for sure that there's a third. I'm not sure if there's much more after that. The author, though, has created lots of other short stories that are just as... well... disturbing. ^^ They come in a different series, which the name escapes me at the moment. -ArV

Even if the request is illegal, I find the subject matter itself very interesting. I never really thought about it, but I always assumed Osamu Tezuka made the first Japanese animation. It's very interesting to learn about Yamamoto. Sorry I don't have any copy of it though. It'd be interesting to watch a Japanese silent Anime. -ArV

I remember watching the series too. I had to wake up early. But I found someone that had a few of the episodes on mIRC and I downloaded them. ^^ Too bad my disk got full and I had to delete them. ;_; The rapping as the OP was hillarious!! Hey Paizanos! XD -ArV

This is NOT a Naruto thread! The Manga series Uzumaki (whirlpool, spiral, etc.) by Junji Ito is one of the freakiest things I have ever read. The opening lines and the title of the first chapter pretty much explain everything. "This is Kurouzu Cho, where I grew up. I would like to share with you... the strage events that took place here." Chapter 1: The Spiral Obsession Kurouzu Cho and its people are cursed with spirals. They are everywhere. They're hypnotic. They're deadly. A girl and her boyfriend witness the horrors of the spiral as they slowly destroy the townspeople. Junji Ito is a genius at writing horror fiction and this book is not for the faint of heart! I convinced a few of my friends to read it, and a few of them were too scared to continue! If anybody else has read Uzumaki, or seen the live action movie, I'd like to know what you guys think! -ArV

Spoiler is the [.spoiler] tag (without the period.)
Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue are only similar because Satoshi Kon likes to focus on anime which doesn't include abnormal powers or mechs. Tokyo Godfathers had more of a holiday-feel to it, Perfect Blue is an Alfred Hitchcock inspired flick, Millenium Actress seperates from suspense and tells a love story, Paranoia Agent actually dives into the human mind and tells a story. All completely different, if you ask me.
I think all of them have a different theme and message, but Kon's method of delivery is definately distinctive. They are all similar and can all be identified with Kon, and in that sense they are all the same. Of course, I don't disagree with you, I'm just saying they all share something... ah heh. -ArV
-
I know I should be bringing up old threads, but I just saw this movie and was wondering if anybody here remembers it. ^^ I have to say Satoshi Kon has a way of convincing me his movies are the best. Ever since I saw a poster for Millenium Actress a month ago, I had to watch it. It's a wonderful story that almost made me cry, and was a dynamite adventure. There's a lot of hype out there for the movie, but there doesn't seem to be much recognition for it at the boards. You don't have to reply to this, just go watch it. ^^ -ArV
yeah, I'll commend Sakura for that, but one of the best fights is Lee vs Gaara and Neji vs Naruto in the chuunin exams, and Naruto vs Sasuke.
Sailor they haven't gotten there yet. But yeah, the Sakura fight against the Sound Ninjas was pretty cool. She can be great at making tactics and plans, even if her ninjutsu and taijutsu skills are a bit weaker. I just think the fight was too short though. And I hate how it ended though. BWAHAHA. I get a look into the future with my scanlations. Kishimoto-kamisama is very sexist and treats his women with such little respect.
Anyone care to catch me up? ^_^
Welcome Darkartic and Genshiken. I hope you guys will help contribute to the Naruto thread in the future. ^^ As for catching youup... I don't think that's very possible. xD A lot has happenned since then. But I'll give you the highlights. I really think you should just keep reading the manga though.
The preliminaries for the Chuunin Exam. The third Chuunin Exam. The war against leaf. Naruto and Jiraiya have to search for a cure for Sasuke and Kakashi. Chasing Sasuke. How Kakashi gets the Sharingan. Time skip. Gaara dies and Sakura becomes strong. Kakashi and Sasuke are replaced by Yamato and Sai.
And that's where we are now. ^^ -Arvi

Manga the problem with Shonen Jump's translation of Naruto
r2vq replied to Sailor Ganymede's topic in Otaku Central
I have heard that in the latest editions of the American SJ have begun using the romanized Japanese attack names, while including the corresponding English translations in parentheses. If this is true (and I'd be pleased as pie if someone could confirm it for me, heh), //snip//
I bought an issue of SJ recently. (I understand why people hate it so much, but I still like the Naruto manga and am willing to support the franchise...) I'm not sure how long they've been doing it, or if they're going to continue to do it, but yes, they used the romanized versions of the Japanese attacks with the English translations beside them. I find this to be a great way to compromise between the children reading, and those who liked of the fansubs or scanlations. Though the constant revamping and changing of the system isn't good for consistency. -ArV -
I really dispise Yu-Gi-Oh. IMO, this is a sorry excuse for a children's anime. Anime is open to the imagination but everytime I force myself to watch an episode it just gets more degrading. The plot gets more ridiculous, the cardplay strategies become laughable, and everything becomes too predictable. The only type of card-like anime I prefer is Cardcaptor Sakura. Cardcaptor Sakura is everything Yu-Gi-Oh was suppose to be. The only thing it lacks is the "cool flare" that Yu-Gi presents. Overall Yu-Gi-Oh is a fine example of flash over substance.
Are you watching the English one? The dub sucks. The second series isn't that good either. Read tha manga, I thought the story wasn't that bad. Especially when it gets to the egyption ark. Actually, I like to give Anime a 10% rule. I don't judge a series until I see at least 10% of it. -ArV

Anime Ghost in the Shell: The Real-Life Android.
r2vq replied to Otaku America's topic in Otaku Central
Seriously, it's nothing special. Figure a few generic computer parts internally, and an overly flashy exterior with no real substance. Making something look[/B'] human is easy, but making it move like a human is the tough part. I think the mechanical dance partner that teaches you how to dance was more impressive than this, even if the exterior wasn't as convincing.
Actually, I saw something like this on Discovery Channel. (I'm not sure if this is the one) In Japan they have an android that is not only made to look like a human, but act like a human. They copied mouth movements, eye movements, and tried to get all the little idiosyncrasies that humans have. She can show emotion, and many people in the work places have started to treat her more like a human. They also have another robot that can have vocal conversations with humans. It picks up the intonations by measuring speed and pitch of the voice. Basically the difference between "sou desu ne...." and "sou desu ne!". Its voice also changes depending on what it wants to communicate. I wondered what would have happened if they put the two together. -ArV -
First off, haven't we had this conversation already? Second. A lot of these "rules" that people are posting are VERY big misconceptions, or are just opinions without factual background. For example:
Western Cartoons rarely have 'to be continued' episodes.
Not only is that not true, it can describe Anime as well. Although many anime follow a single storyline, you're leaving out all the Anime that DON'T. A great Anime is Paranoia Agent, and there are _no_ "to be continued" episodes. Yes, it's one story, but what about Reboot. It's a single story also! Another great example is Samurai Champloo. There are mini-arcs, but if you take the different arcs, you can practically watch them out of order! The 90's version of Spiderman does a better job of keeping a linear attitude, while keeping the mini-arc pattern.
Western cartoons rarely have character development, since it doesn't really matter when a lot of cartoons are adventure of the week or villain of the week style. They do have some character development, but it usually happens once a season.
I'll bring Spiderman back since it's on the top of my head. Characters developed, not slowly, but often! People were always changing. Todd Mcfarlane's Spawn was a great series ALL ABOUT character development. A man goes through hell on Earth and has to figure out his self. Compare this to Excel Saga. A girl runs around for 24 episodes before realizing ANYTHING. Or any of the Tenchi series. The dude is doing the same thing, over and over again.
Western Cartoons rarely have good fights in Cartoons, I can't explain why, they just don't. I can't even think of one good fight at the moment.
Western Cartoons are CENSORED. But fights DO exist! Watch The Maxx. Possibly the greatest mind puzzle ever, and there are still GREAT fights. I believe Invader Zim had hillarious, wonderful, and amazing fights. Watch your Anime again. Watch the fight scenes, take a watch, and TIME the total length where you don't actually see the characters ANIMATED, but you see a picture of them with the background or camera moving. And all that yelling and talking? Great fights indeed. This is a matter of opinion on what is a good fight, definately not a good means of comparison.
In the west, you don't really get cartoons made people over 10, they are, after all, seen by the majority as "babyish". This means that making a universe with scope on par with Bebop, Eva or Last Exile become impossible. Think about how much any of those series would cost to make in live action. The suits would have a fit.
This is for the most part true. But you cannot use your ignorance as an excuse to say cartoons for adults do not exist. The Maxx, Spawn, Heavy Metal(?), and SO MUCH more exist for adults. Granted, the child market is much larger, but the adult market does exist. As for scope and large worlds? Compare Beast Wars or Reboot to Love Hina. One is a war that has taken place through, time and space. A war that has aged for eons. Finally taking root on an alien planet that allows them to spawn into half beasts, they continue the fighting with new bodies, new allies, new enemies, and a connection to the past, and the future. Another takes place inside a computer where two virii run rampant. Programs are running left and right trying to keep the system running while the virii make hassle for a Guardien program downloaded from the web. The Guardien program has to deal with them, and incoming games, which can nullify an entire sector. Eventually the computer gains access to the web, super computers, hackers and pirates. The last, is a story of a boy who likes a girl. And lots of girls like him. And they all live in the same house. Yes, that's right. The anime has a larger world and scope there. @_@ -================- I don't mean to sound like a jerk. It's my pet peeve when people have these preconceive notions. The word Anime (アニメ) in Japan, is ANYTHING animated. the word Anime in the West is used to mean Japanese animation, or Japanese-styled Animation. Teen Titans being an example of the latter. Like Leofski said, the only differences in American and Japanese animation are culture and cost. COST: Believe it or not, Americans spend more money on their Animations than the Japanese do. The Japanese companies just focus on different aspects of the animation to make it higher quality. Examples: Limited Animation, Music. CULTURE: Japanese people don't have the same stigma Americans do when it comes to Animation. Americans think cartoons are for children because of the strict censorship laws that affected the "above ground" comic industry in the forties and fifties. In Japan, cartoons are just another medium. -================- Ugh. Sorry for the long post, and again, I apologize if I offended anybody. This is not an excuse, but an explanation ---> This kind of thing is my pet peeve. >.< -ArV
So yeah maybe we'll unknowingly run into eachother this summer. Just look for the lady with the baby.
Lady with the baby. That's helpful. XD Can you picture me running up to every woman with a baby and asking them if they're ChibiHorsewman? XD If you're going to visit Toronto, come by in August and go to CN Anime. ^^ So you can be around other Anime fans while you're here. Of course, you can still go to the Eaton's Centre while you're here. XP
I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
My cousins live in Mississauga... Well, I was talking about the manga really. We're at a good part of the story. And no, I don't download the anime either. ^^ It just takes too long... is there a seperate thread for the Naruto manga? If I'm going to watch the anime, I think I'd only watch the movie, or the big fights. I only saw the second half of the movie and my downloads are limited. >.> Edit: Just read the most recent Chapter. Ooooooo Those are interesting enemies. The next fight should be good. ^^ -ArV

Anime I have a question about animes in america.
r2vq replied to rascalkitten's topic in Otaku Central
Nor do I have any idea where this thread is supposed to be headed, but perhaps someone will explain it to me... ? :animeswea
My guess is that rascalkitten saw a show on TV, then read a Manga and noticed a difference. It' s also possible, and I believe more likely, that he/she heard from somewhere how badly a certain series was censored or changed in the English version. He/She probably didn't know that manga and anime are never perfect reflections of each other, and thought it was the American broadcasters that changed things. This ignorance is not to be blamed, though, since so many dubbies, and subbies alike, complain about the American companies changing things all the time. This leads newbies to think, wrongly albeit I believe fairly, that all changes stem from American broadcasters. GTK already explained why Manga was different from Anime pretty well. I just wanted to add my two-cents on the topic of Anime importing and try to clear a few misconceptions........ -ArV -

I can't wait until 262 comes out. The beginning of 262 was frustrating because...[/spoiler']
You mean the beginning of 261 XP. I can't wait for the next one either. >.< Argh, they just keep pulling you in to make it longer. I wonder what the other Jinchuuriki will be like. (BWAHAHA. New word for the Naruto dictionary! ^^) So we have 2 through 8 unrevealed right? Today was the last day of the Anime Convention in Toronto (Canada) and I bought Naruto Volume Nine. Contained within:
Haruno Sakura v. Yamanaka Ino; Temari v. Tenten; Nara Shikamaru v. Kin Tsuchi; Uzumaki Naruto v. Inu(d)zuka Kiba; Hyuuga Hinata v. Hyuuga Neji; and Gaara v. Rock Lee.
That's a lot, and I'm happy. ^^ My goal is to be able to read and understand in one year. -ArV Edit: Is anybody still following this series? I guess the Narutard craze has finally died down. Chapter 263 for the Manga should be scanlated soon, but 262 was just dissappointing. Nothing much happened. And no developments on
Kazekage-sama
-ArV

Anime I have a question about animes in america.
r2vq replied to rascalkitten's topic in Otaku Central
have you ever noticed about how america take good mangas and makes them terroble? if america wants to make anime they could give the to adult swim so that they can atleat get a decint rateng.
If Anime is to be successful in the United States, the companies selling them must make money. For that reason a lot of anime has had their target audience changed to a younger age. The younger age group has a stronger buying power when it comes to merchandise, and isn't affected as much by the stereotype in the west that "cartoons are for children." ...but probably because they are children... Adult Swim and anime directed towards older people exist in the United States, but compare the popularity of these series to the popularity of Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokémon. The marketting for these series can do what they can because they are directed towards a younger audience. I used to be just like you. I was very, very, pissed off when they changed Jounouchi, Honda, and Anzu to Joey, Tristen, and Téa. But like GTK said, there is a reason. The series would be most popular among children, and children need to be able to pronounce the name. For them to stop changing things, all cartoons in general have to become more popular and accepted with people of all ages. So, what you should hope for is not that the Animation or Dubbing business changes, but that society changes. Hopefully society can change so that discrimination like this doesn't exist. Hopefully society can change so that bigotry like this doesn't exist. Hopefully society can change so that cartoons can be for anybody. edit::
like in yugioh, tea's name is anzul tristen is honda, the only name not changed is yugis name.
AnzuL? It would help if you typed things properly. Make your messages a bit more coherent. It only takes a moment and that way you wouldn't accidentally change the names of people... just like what you're complaining about. -ArV -
Gaming Series jokes (from Tingle to Biggs and Wedge)
r2vq replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in Noosphere
OK, let's go old school. I know people have played Leisure Suit Larry, at least the old ones. I found it funny how when you die you go back to the "Sierra lab" and you can see other Sierra characters in the background. Who thought Mother Goose would be in _that_ game? ^^ -ArV -
...dunno if i get to meet him yet... maybe just q&a JtHM is animated? I thought only Zim was animated. -ArV

I can't remember, and I spent the last half hour looking for it... But was it the one that had a professor, a boy, a girl, and some sort of chicken device? Ah drat, after all that, it just came to me now. I think it was called... Moncholy Nights or something? >.< not sure. bad memory. sorry. -ArV

Every year there are two big Anime Conventions that my friends and I talk about. Anime North just finished, and CN Anime is coming this August. The reason I post this in the Zim thread is because CN Anime is merged with the Comic Book, Sci Fi, Horror, and Gaming conventions. And for this year's Comic Book convention JHONEN VASQUEZ, creator of Zim, JtHM, and Squee, will be a guest of honour. ^^ BWAHAHAHA. I can't wait to meet him. Him and Linda Park... OOh and Tuvok... and Elijah Wood but he's meh... anyway. Anyone have any questions that they would want me to ask him if I have the chance? I wonder if I will though... Sometimes you have to pay extra for the special guests. >.< -ArV
