That's good to know, the accent thing. I think somebody told me that too. XD So Dagger-dono, who would you reccomend to watch the dub of Peace Maker Kurogane? XP -ArV

I'd say VAs get paid okay. They don't get as much money as Live-Action actors (and that's why the VAs of the Simpsons were supposedly going to go on strike) but they get more jobs and that would probably work out. ^^ Though, if you're planning to move to Japan, Animators don't get much money. Don't know about Anime Seiyuu, most of them are also singers. -ArV
Sasuke said that in the first manga.
So I reread it... Are you talking about when Sasuke was explaining his "dream"? That was the first time they met Kakashi and the only time Sasuke refers to Itachi. If you could be a bit more specific, that would be helpful. The only reason I'm being so presistant is that I find it hard to believe that Sasuke would admit that he cried. If anyone's read the latest Manga up to the most recent chapter, I'd like to know their comments on it. ^^ -ArV

RizaHawkeye, try reading some of the earlier posts in this thread. Yes, Naruto will be on Cartoon Network in English this year. As for what you said about Sasuke, please state which part of the story he said that. I don't remember that at all, and I've gotten pretty far with the series, both Manga and Anime. It doesn't seem like anything Sasuke would say. -ArV

Is it just me or does this show seem a bit more childish than the American version? Yes, the Powerpuff Girls appealed to children in the United States, but I felt that it had deeper meaning. It was able to spoof and reference things that children would never understand... Ah well, what can a 10 second shot tell me? -ArV
//snip// I think it goes a long way toward justifying the dub director's decision to use accents in the English version. I guess I just found that pretty interesting, because it wasn't something I really picked up on when watching PMK in Japanese.
It'd probably be easier to notice if you spoke the language. ^^ I hear people mention that this character has an accent, or that character has an accent, but I can never tell because I don't know what it's supposed to sound like >.
//snip// Sai doesn't have anything on Kazuki (from Get Backers) or Okita (from Peacemaker Kurogane). //snip//
XD My Get Backer-liking friends talk about the dress-wearing-man-with-boobs all the time. Sai is definately a guy. A clue for those that don't watch the anime: There were very few female professionals in the Heian period. Most nobles were very dainty, especially if they were closer to The Emperor. Sai interacted directly with him so he'd naturally be very cultured.
Honestly, that's probably my one big complaint with the show--due to the way the plot progresses, some of the coolest characters are simply forced to drop off the radar. //snip// It's really neat how the artwork subtly changes over the course of the anime.
It definately is a shame. You never see Tsutsui play again. ;_; ^^ Though, he shows up at Hikaru's last tournament the same we he showed up at the first tournament Hikaru visited. That was pretty cool. I also want to see more of Chinese Waya! XD Reading the ending chapters of Hikaru no Go had me appreciating the artist so much. The style at that point is very similar to Deathnote. It was absolutely shocking for to compare the art for the first chapter after finishing the series. -ArV

Anime Best Anime Girl Tournament: Bracket, explanation, and discussion!
r2vq replied to Bloodseeker's topic in Otaku Central
3. Caska (Berserk) vs. Katsumi Liquer (Silent Mobius) //snip// 16. Caska (Berserk) vs. Belldandy(Ah! My Goddess)
Is Caska supposed to appear twice? Honestly I don't mind, I hope she wins XD. But I'm just wondering since she's the only one that did. -ArV -
Assuming this thread is about dreams... TwoMoons, you and I have the same dream. I wish I could become a voice actor, but I know how difficult that is. I'm taking drama courses and plan to go the long route (going to stage or radio first) because I'd like a lot of experience. Although I can alter my voice to an extent, I know what I need most right now is acting experience. DORAMA KURASSESSU. -ArV

Full Metal Alchemist is more well known and as Cap'n said, more people will be cosplaying him. Last year, at a convention I went to, the amount of Edward Elric cosplayers and Naruto cosplayers was just not funny. The girl from XXXHolic is not neccessarily that it's not well known, just that the character wont be instantly recognisable. XXXHolic, like most CLAMP works, is pretty well known in my experience. But unless you're that tall and skinny, it'll be pretty hard to distinguish that you're that strange witch lady... I say go for Yuko because it'll be a prettier dress, and it'll definately be unique. ^^ -ArV

I posted this on another thread but it's a bit far back...
I've been to two different Anime Conventions in Toronto. CN Anime once. Anime North twice, and again this May. I suggest you a few things. 1. Bring water bottles and food. A lot of water bottles. Food and water is always expensive. 2. SLEEP! Don't go sleepless! You wont enjoy yourself! 3. Read your schedule and plan where you want to go so you don't miss out on things. 4. Bathe. It's important to keep your hygene up. XP 5. Go with friends! It's always best with friends! 6. Don't be shy! Meet new people! Make new friends! You never know who you'll meet. 7. Enjoy yourself. You're there to have fun. -ArV
If you spend all your money on doujinshi (fan manga) you wont have any money left for food, transportation, whatever. So be careful about buying too much. Have fun with everything is the main thing. And no matter what, never reach into the pocket of an old man in a trenchcoat. -ArV

^^ Not Monty Python. Japan is extremely chauvanistic. JenniKate seems to understand what I mean. ^^ Men are in control. Women are either normal women (stay at home) or business women. Business women who get married are pressured to quit their jobs. I don't understand the 'feminism' 'chivalery' thing though... -ArV

I love Hikaru no Go and I am surprised that there isn't already a Hikago thread at Otaku Boards. I just never bothered to check... Hikaru no Go was one of the series that changed my life. It's that simple. The series not only inspired me to play Go (which unfortunately I'm still not that good at ^^) but it helped me meet a lot of current friends. What Hikaru no Go does for Go, CSI does for Forensics. Neither are entirely accurate, but they bring excitement and enthusiasm to the game. Hatake Kakashi, do you remember when it ended abruptly? That was a shock and pretty sad. Also, when I found out that the manga was licensed right before the end of the series was translated! I was so upset. XD I love the series so much that most of my WebLog, or Website layouts were centered around it. And I have a Japanese Volume of the Manga. (which I plan to read ^^) Volume 15 - Sayonara (my favourite volume) a few interesting facts about Hikago: "Go" is Japanese for 5. Hikaru (the main character) wears a 5 on a lot of his clothes. The series started on May 5 (5/5) which is also "Boy's Day". When
MAJOR SPOILER DO NOT READ --Sai left-- MAJOR SPOILER DO NOT READ
it was also Boy's Day. If you like Hikago, you should try to read Deathnote, by the same artist. You might not like Hikago if you don't like series' where they overdramatize situations. ("OMG HE PLAYED THERE!!!!!!!!" gasp gasp gasp sweat sweat sweat gasp gasp gasp) -ArV ps. 23k is a compliment for me, but I've gotten a program called "igowin" to 7k. Does anyone else play Go?
Here is a short list of some of the DBZ girls though-- with comments: //snip// Lunch/Kushami- Servile woman by day; vicious robber by night. She is a funny character, but she too is ogled by Roshi. Even though he's afraid of her 'evil side', she usually remains in her 50's houswife garb throughout the novel.
Since when was she in Dragonball Z? She seemed to disappear after Dragon Ball. XD Also have to remember that Japan itself is a sexist, chauvinistic country. Only recently have things been changing. Traditionally, men practically owned women like property and women are only meant to be "good wives". Things are starting to change, I hear, only very, very slowly. -ArV

Thanks x kakashi x. Though, I'd really appreciate criticism on the outline. ^^ Any and all is welcome. I've also been wondering... how many people consider The Animatrix as Anime? Specifically The Final Flight of the Osiris, and Matriculated. I ask this because both were directed by Americans in the United States. FFotO was directed by Andy Jones (Final Fantasy: The Sprits Within), and Matriculated was directed by Peter Cheung (MTV's Aeon Flux). -ArV

Naruto has its own thread and usually questions about the series are posted in that thread. I'm not sure, but a moderator may move this thread to join the official Naruto thread. To answer your queston, I've seen no news saying that 4kids would be doing Naruto. ShoPro has licensed Naruto, and they've just fused with Viz. I have a question, has 4kids ever licensed anime that aired on Cartoon Network? Finally. I sincerely doubt they will change the main character's name to "Nathan" if the name of the show is still "Naruto". Nathan will air third quarter 2005 on Cartoon Network. -ArV ps. Didn't somebody point out that in the press release they used the names "Sasuke" "Sakura"?

Ah. Yeah, not my best post or thread. It was one of those concepts that sound better before you say, or in this case type, it. I'm not as obsessed with that label as it may seem. Thanks for replying. Although "Otaku" is a state of mind. I don't think I have that state, I'm just a geek-wannabe who likes most animation, comic, and video game forms. -ArV

An Anime and Manga of the same title may not have been written/drawn by the same person. Sometimes (if the manga comes first) an Anime might change a detail, a sequence, or an entire story because that's what they think will be better. Sometimes it's for a different target audience. Sometimes, the producers/directors/w.e just think it'll be better changed. Sailor Moon manga is totally different from the Anime and more closely follows the Live Action Television show. Different target audience? The Peacemaker Kurogane anime was a combination of Shinsengumi Imon Peacemaker and Peacemaker Kurogane. A case of sticking too close to the Manga, I would say, would be Dragonball Z. There were long scenes of dramatic pause, which work in manga but not anime. -ArV

My Story: (people will probably ignore this :animecry: ) (Skip to the big font to get to the point) I insist that I'm not an Otaku. This may have to do with me taking things with Japanese definition, just like I'll say Bugs Bunny is technically Anime. My girlfriend finds this insulting (both the Bugs Bunny thing and the Otaku thing) and insists that I am more Otaku than she is. She took a test that said she was somewhere around 70% Otaku and says I should take a test to prove that I am an Otaku. I searched the web and found a couple "Otaku Purity Quizzes" and the such, but most of the questions are so stupid and can't apply...
"Have you ever taken offense to someone saying Japanimation?"
Why would I? That's what they call it in Japan.
"Did you use words like nani and baka in everyday situations even though you don't speak Japanese?"
Um... I've learnt Japanese and I use sentances like キサマァ~どこへいくの。in every day conversations? My point is, since this is OtakuBoards maybe there's some good "Otaku" quiz out there and somebody here knows it? If anybody knows of one, or can make one, that'd be cool. Also, how many people here really consider themselves Otaku? If you are Otaku, why do call yourself Otaku? How do you know when you're Otaku? -ArV
Do you just collect manga because of the pretty pictures?
-.- ugh...

I actually did a comparitive essay on the differences between Japanese animation and American animation. Most Anime "otaku" think they know what they are, but most are very mistaken. After researching on the web, I found that even professional looking websites rely on stereotypes and misconceptions. The Essay can be summarized as follows: (Underlined objects are very important) 1. Japanese Animation has less funding than American. --> Especially today, the average animator in Japan makes less money than the average Japanese worker his/her age. --> To overcome the problems created by this, Japanese Animators use a technique that makes their work less fluid than American Animation. Most Japanese Animators use a technique invented by Osamu Tezuka called "limited animation". This is why Japanese Animation is famous for its "action poses". 2. Japanese Animation has a wider variety of genres. --> The misconception is that Japanese Animation always has a great storyline that American Animation could never compare to. Fans of Japanese Animation try to prove this by using American Comedies or Satires, because that is the most available American Animation. Few of these fans like to point out American Cartoons based on Comic Books, like Spawn, Gargoyles, and Spiderman. They also don't like to point out Japanese shows that don't have great, long, story lines like Excel Saga, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, Ranma½ and Dragonball Z. --> The wide variety of genres in Japanese Animation is due mostly to the audience it captures. In Japan, Animation and Manga are a valid source of entertainment for every age group, and gender. Unfortunately due to censorship laws over fifty years old, American Animation is widely viewed as children's material, mainly for boys. 3. As for style of drawing, Japanese style drawings are inspired by American style. --> The misconception is that Japanese styled drawings are unique and can never be copied. If you look at the original Mangaka, Osamu Tezuka, the God of Anime, you will notice that early Anime characters look a lot like early Disney characters, and early American comic strip "funnies" characters. Japanese style was spawned from American style, that's where the big eyes came from. --> There has also been a trend recently of American animators being inspired by Japanese style. I had something here about cross-pollenization with Totally Spies, Martin Mysteries, Powerpuff Girls, and even Dexter's Lab as examples. +===+ Anyway. Sorry about the long drawn out post. I just saw this thread, thought it fit with it, and that some people would be interested. Maybe one day I'll post the actual essay. -ArV

Anime AZN television what is this a anime channel ?
r2vq replied to Galvatron's topic in Otaku Central
Descendents of Darkness? Yami no Matsuei? -.- I wish I had access to Anime Networks. In Canada our only real source of Anime (other than Fox) is YTV, and it's quite slow. It aired its first episode of Hack Sign on April 1st, and most of the Anime we hear airing in the United States is impossible to get in Canada. -ArV -
I haven't read it, but I heard it was really funny. Also, I hear it's full of shounen-ai. Maybe you could give us a description of the manga hyper123. It'd be easier to talk about it for those who haven't read it, and it would make those who haven't read it want to read it more. -ArV

Bloodseeker, I'm also pretty straight, and I understand your concern. But remember who the series is directed to. Remember who the characters were made for. Tuxedo Mask wasn't ment to be appealing to you, but to girls. XP It's apparently trend in Anime that the most attractive guys are the most effeminate. That's why a lot of a Bishounen/J-Rockers look like girls. I'm not sure why that's popular? Can anybody explain that? I was always partial to the quiet, friendly, powerful type. Like this guy. He's the best bishi ever. ^^ hey.. he's pretty effeminate too... -ArV
Is there a problem with limited sexism? In anime or the world.
Imagine not getting the job you want even though you're the best at it, because of discrimination. Imagine not being paid how much you deserve, because of discrimination. Imagine being beat up when you're nothing but friendly, because of discrimination. Imagine people expecting certain things from you, because of discrimination. Racism, Sexism, Age-ism, and any sort of discrimination is wrong, hurtful and morally injust. Even if you haven't been discriminated against, try to have sympathy for those that have. Not all women want to grow up to be home makers, and men shouldn't be expected to be "macho". Hey. I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader... and I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled... and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada even if I am Canadian. Ok, ignore that last paragraph (it's about racism), but yes, sexism is bad. -ArV

For some reason, I always heard Powerpuff Girls classified as Anime, although American, it was classified as Anime. I agree with the earlier post, nobody can mess with Powerpuff Girls. The PPG have a specific style of drawing, existing, and animation. Converting to Anime will be strange. -ArV
