Well, I think it's common knowledge that Keanu Reeves has impeccable acting range, but this movie was just terrible. Was it trying to be a supernatural thriller? Was it a satire? Was it trying to be outright comedy? It just did not pick a direction. Ok and let's not forget to mention that the scene in the beginning with that little girl in Mexico is SUCH an Exorcist rip-off. I'm still just shocked Keanu would stoop this low, after such masterpieces as Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

An actor who continually surprises me with his range and sheer acting talent is Mark Wahlberg. He first amazed me in Boogie Nights and then made me adore him in the amazing film I Heart Huckabees. He's one of the better, if not the best, model (and rapper) turned actor out there.
but expected little from Zoolander. Male models seemed so stupid.
Well...wasn't that the point of the movie?

"The infamous 'R' rating!" (spoken in a mysterious 'dooooom' voice)
coconuts1977 replied to Falkon's topic in Noosphere
Funny this should come up. Last year I wrote an article, for my school newspaper, on how f--ked up the MPAA is. Here it is. [EDIT]- Uh....anyone have any feedback?
I hear that if the F word is said more than twice ina movie it's automatically rated R, if not higher.
Also it depends on the usage of the word. It can only be used as an explicative in a PG-13 film, but NOT as a verb. -
Here are mine. #1- (my a landslide) Carol of the Bells: I just love the music and I think the words to it are amazing. I love the harmony in it. #2- Santa Baby: Classic and sexy...what more could one ask for in a Christmas song. #3- Silent Night: Relaxing, pleasant song.

There are a lot of Christian undertones in a lot of different anime series/movies.The Japanese seem to love undertones in everything they watch, whether is be Christian, some other religion, or some other reference. Maybe the reason you see Christianity poking its head through a few series is because you are somewhat familiar with the religion and can spot subtle motifs/imagery.

Guys, guys, come on. I think we all need to work on our self-reliance. A cabin in the middle of nowhere could help.
1. Gundam Seed. I heard it was one of the best Gundam series ever, so I had high hopes, but all they ever do is talk!
Oh, I just hate it when they're dialogue. I think it most definitely ruins a show. Take the show Last EXILE for example. All the fighting was good, but when they started jabbering on and on, I just couldn't listen. Damn that Gundam Seed, damn it to hell.
Heh, except that Hideaki Anno didn't understand the ending either. That's why it's such a huge mess--both endings, actually. Honestly, there's nothing genius about those endings or the whole show, and Anno will be the first to admit it.
Same with David Lynch in the analogy i was trying to make-- comparing david Lynch to the writer/creator of NGE. MOST people out there consider it genius, but couldn't explain it if their lives depended on it. This goes on a much broader scale than just discussing NGE-- a lot of the time things that people don't understand, will just automatically be brushed off as either whacky/stupid or genius and I think Lynch and Anno just lucked out. NGE's ending makes no sense and the rest of the story is just good. It's nothing spectacular. Yes, that's my opinion, but everyone knows (especially Dagger) that my opinion reigns supreme. :D

I would have to say that Evangelion is one of the most overrated anime. I really enjoyed this show, up until the final 4 episodes, and thought it was nicely done. The animation was satisfactory, the seiyuu's were good, and the music was enjoyable. The plot was interesting and kept me thinking, too much so towards the latter half of the series. Let's face it, the end really does not make much sense and it's silly for people to try to say they understand it, because I believe it's up to one's own interpretation. I'm still just shocked at how many people are obsessed with this show. It was a good show, but it definitely wasn't the best, or even one of the best ever made. I was speaking to a friend of mine from school a few years back, who is from Japan. He explained to me that there is somewhat of a cult following of the series in Japan and that the general public do no really care for the show past face value. I think that also applies here. I think in many respects Evangelion is a lot like David Lynch's Twin Peaks, which garnered a somewhat large cult following during it's two season run here in the states. The show really did not make much sense, but stimulated thought provoking debate and interpretation. The show, however, was not that spectacular. It wasn't genius, no matter how many people try to defend it as being so. It was just stream of thought story that was completely objectionable. I think Evangelion is the same and think it is just, on a whole, a good series. It most definitely is not a GREAT one, like so many people claim.
I'm gay so I'm allowed to answer this question.
What does you being gay have to do with the ability to pick out a good smelling cologne? Are gays gifted with a better sense of smell than that of the straight men?
Well,if you're going for cheaper stuff,Axe is good.If your buying more expensive stuff I like Gucci's Envy for Men.I think.Theres too many,I've never smelled yours before.Oooh, and Burberry Touch Eau de Toilette Spray for Men.Thats all I can think of. But I think it sort've depends on what kind of person you are.If that makes any sense.
I can't STAND Envy. I think it smells like an old man. I bought it once and was just disgusted by it. Burberry Weekend, however, is quite nice and use it often. My favorite, though, has to be Paul Smith: EXTREME. I highly recommend that one. [EDIT] I also really like Issey Miyake (SP?), he makes some really good smelling cologne.
o_O; That's what my comments were related to.
Tsk. Tsk. Ending a sentence with a preposition. ;) Along the lines with this thread, I am really pissed off at how many of you guys are so paranoid about gay men hitting on you. Don't flatter yourselves. It's pretty self-centered of you to just assume that a man, who happened to be gay, would automatically hit on you. If you were as hot as me, however, you would have reason to worry. [EDIT]: Suppose an unattractive woman hits on me- I would, of course, decline her advances, while at the same time, feel flattered that she found me attractive. The same scenario would go for gay guys.

Writing What Is This I Feel [Please Review]
coconuts1977 replied to NashvilleDream's topic in Creative Works
Hm. I don't really care for this one. It seems pretty contrived and cliched. I don't know what else to tell you, but that is just my opinion on it. -
Note: if you haven't seen the film, do yourself a huge favor and DON'T READ THE SPOILERS! Watch the film first! Heh. I actually liked that, because it was a very clever way to dispel the myth. It made more sense than any other
animal
, really. The only thing is the CG made it worse (as well as the creature animation). Here's why:
the size of the beast was a bit inconsistent. In one scene its not that big and its master can pull the pitchfork out of its side without any trouble. In another scene, where it's fighting three dogs in an arena, it's like a rhinoceros. Another problem: lions would probably use their claws or something to attack their prey (or jump and try to break the neck). The beast seriously did a lot of "head swinging," making it really seem like a rhino. Especially in the scene where the beast crashes into the home of Marianne's aunt/uncle. So the actual shots of the beast really throw you off from thinking it's a lion. But I'm gonna blame that on the CG and animation folks, not the screenwriter or director. Well, the director a little.

Which is basically all I said.

I loved this film. I saw it originally in the theaters and then bought the DVD. The only problem I have with it is the wolf/beast. The CG was/were? terrible. It was so pixilated. I thought the set designs were the best thing and the cinematography was top-notch too.I loved when they were riding through the forest during the hunt and they slowed down the motion when they jumped over the log and their red capes were flapping....beautiful. All in all I really liked it, especially considering how the French normally don't 'do action/martial art movies.' It was a job well done, in my eyes.
I found the Frenchman pompous
What's new?

I thought the direction in Alien: Resurrection was very good. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of the best visual directors around, it's too bad the shoddy script had to hold him down. I should have guessed seeing as how the writer was the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer...what a shame, such a talented director...
My 3 favourite horror mives are as follows. 1) Blair Witch Project; This movie kicks ***, I didn't find it all too scary, it was just the idea of an unseen, terrifying menace that couldn't be stopped that kept me in suspense. If you don't know your enemy, how can you defeat it? Blair With
Was there something else you wanted to say?

New television show premired tonight, Nip/Tuck (possible spoilers)
coconuts1977 replied to Kaola Su's topic in Noosphere
I think this was one of the best series of this TV year. I LOVED LOVED LOVED how it ended and I can't wait till when it comes back on in June. It was nominated for three Golden Globes: Best Actress in a TV Drama, Best Dramatic Series, and something else. It also put F/X on the map in terms of ratings. A lot of it might seem very campy, but on the whole I find it a VERY enjoyable show. -
I am very interested in seeing how Rebecca Romang(sp?)-Stamos does in this. I really do think she has some acting potential. The story itself seems pretty interesting. I'll update when I see it next week.
Cabin Fever - This is a really recent one. Most people at the theater hated it, but I loved it. I still think it was the best horror film of its year. It's humorous, but also extremely morbid. If it wasn't for some of the goofiness, I think it would have come off a lot darker than it did. I really enjoyed it.
I actually think the comedy added an edge of creepiness to it, much like the places of 'comedy' made the Shining even creepier. Like when Shelly Duvall, 'Wendy Torrence,' is walking up the stairs with the baseball bat** and Jack goes
'I'm not going to hurt you, I'm just going to bash your ******* brains in'
. And of course the old 'Heeeeree's Johnny' line. I think that well placed comedic points can really aid in the eerie setting of a horror movie. **- just an interesting tid-bit: this scene required the most takes out of any other film ever made. It was well over 100, but I'm not certain on the exact amount.

Anime At what age did you start watching anime?
coconuts1977 replied to Elk's topic in Otaku Central
When I was 9 (I'm now 17) my cousin showed me an OVA. It was called something like Tower of Babel. Then I started watching Saturday morning anime on the Sci-Fi Channel. The rest, as they say, is history. -
A billionaire.

Well, I think we've come to a concensus that The Shining really stands out among horror films. What's sad is that it was bashed by critics and Stephen King himself when it was first released. In fact, it was nominated for severl Golden Rasberry Awards. I think it might be just that Kubrick was ahead of his time.

I think if I had seen The Exorcist 20 years ago, I would have been much more frightened of it than I am now. I think it's a pretty creepy film on a whole, but I can see why a lot of people might laugh at it. It still is pretty disturbing, the most disturbing scene I remember is when the girl is on the edge of her bed and the two priests and her mother walk in and she is
masterbating with a crucifix saying 'let Jesus **** you'
So...yeah.
