I'm not into Emo and/or screamo music at all, but since you're saying that a lot of the music is labeled and marketed wrong, I was wondering if you would give me any band or song recommendations. I'm becoming something of an international music fiend, and I'd like to have a listen at what you're listening to. If you have time (or if anyone else does) to listen to D'espairsRay (Japanese band), my question would be: what would you label that? They scream, but I was hesitant to label them, since I know nothing about music genres. First try their song "Garnet" if you listen to them - it's a good song (and scarily enough, I can hear and understand their English lyrics. They sing English better than most J-artists, IMO.)
Okay, I can give you a list of some emo bands: Saetia: They're not the first emo band, but they're the first one to get the style refined. All the other bands I'm going to list either have members of this band in it, or they took elements from Saeita and incorporated their own stuff along with it. They should be your first listen. Neil Perry: Saetia's stuff was all well-recorded, as the drummer himself is a producer. If you want to hear a band who went from scraps to legendary status, this is the one. They were probably the second good emo band. You and I: This band went alongside Saetia and they shared a few members, if I'm correct. They have a different sound than most (mostly in their deeper-voiced singers), but they still fit into the emo genre. This is the choice if you're a metal fan first. Off Minor: After Saetia and You and I each broke up, Off Minor formed and gained their guitarists. By this time, the members all became very skillful with their instruments, relying less on chords and more on technicality. They have a bit of a jazzy sound to them, which is kind of neat. Also, since you like Japanese music, you should check out Envy and Naiad, both are very good Japanese emo bands. As far as some examples of what isn't emo music, there's Taking Back Sunday, Thrice, Dashboard Confessional, and anything that sounds like them. Bands like UnderOath, From First to Last, and Hawthorne Heights use emo elements in their music, but for the most part, there's too much of other genres in the mix (or just total suckage in HH's case) for them to be considered an emo band. Also, "screamo" and "emo" are synnonymous, screamo is sooo 90's. EDIT: And if you guys listen to the bands I mentioned and enjoyed them, PM me, I have like fifty more that harder to track down. EDIT2: I listened to some D'espairsRay, I want to say that they're Japanese Nu-Metal. >_>; If Jakehammaren should happen to read this, I want to know if they pass the Jake Test, to see wether they're metal or not. XD

I think my user name and online personality fit me well IRL. My user name and images, signature, whatever: they're like the clothes I wear, the look I have. Meanwhile, I'm a nice guy at heart, and it shows through my posting and through AIM and all that. I guess it's kind of backwards, but it fits how it fits, and it just happens to be more of an exterior point of view than what my friends think or even what I think of myself. I'm probably not making any sense. And I remember the Red XIII well, Gavin. You were one of the people I used to look up to back in the days of the Final Fantasy forum. You've mentioned your old user names several times already, but I never really gotten to say anything about it. So, awesome.

In true hardcore glory, I've purchased the new album from Iwouldetc. I Would Set Myself On Fire For You Believes in Patterns. Bands with long names just can't pull off that kind of album title, unlike Say Anything Is A Real Boy. Anyways, the album is really amazing, the recording is top-notch, and they added together so many random instruments as well as synth beat interludes. I just wish there was more energy in it like their previous album. It sounds like they were just try to be artsy for the sake of being artsy and that's just not them. I did enjoy that Lindsey had a lot more time on the album, with both her voice and her viola. The cd sounds a lot like their live show, which is very cool. Their first album was more listenable, though, while this one is better suited for background music. I'm really not sure which one I like more. :-/

EDIT True, I do. The person below me's spoon is too big.

Apparently you balance out the difficulty through weapons upgrades and limit breaks. Also, as the enemies higher in level, they learn new attacks. Fire is weaker than Firaga no matter what level you're at. Even a lot of bosses end up underpowered at low levels. And yes, the idea is to run from every fight, fighting only bosses.

I like to begin posts with some introductory point to make, but after five minutes of re-reading things and staring around thinking about it... I'm just going to skip it. I listen to emo music and I'm a complete purist in regards to it. Most music that people call "emo" and "screamo" are just marketed as such, or based off of some misunderstanding 14-year-old's perception of the term. Emo stands for emocore which itself is an abbreviation of emotive hardcore, a genre made up of fast and sometimes textured guitars, at least two screamers at nearly all times, segments of spoken word, and some emotion present in the lyrics or instrument playing that is not present in regular hardcore. Most kids who are "emo" wouldn't touch that ****. Honestly, I'm really sick of seeing clothing styles differenciating who is emo and who isn't. People say that their style is to break outside of the box, to speak out agianst whatever is ailing them. To quote a brilliant emo band, The Assistant: you want to be an individual, right? You look like you're wearing a uniform. Sigh. It's really sad when people take a word that signified a genre of music breaking barriers of creativity, creating art, into a word that degrades and judges people. Real "emos" are artists.

I can't say I have a favorite FF game, but VIII is one of my most beloved ones. I mainly like the characters and the places more than any other FF. And personally, I disliked the Draw/Junction system. The most useful and powerful spells get the highest point values, so of course you'll want to junction them to your stats. While it's usually not a big deal, it's stupid later in the game to run low on Ultima spells, watch your attack stat suffer, and either equip a different spell that you're going to use until you can find more draw points. I also thought that giving every character the ability to cast magic and their own GF's subtracted from the worth of each character. The only time you'd really need to switch characters was when you needed a different Limit Break, say, Selphie's Slots for a Full Cure spell. I've only really played all the way through it once. I usually get so far into it then I start playing and get caught up with another game. I've been wanting to try out the strategy where you don't level through the whole game so the enemies don't grow. I'm not sure if it'd be easier or harder, but it'd be different. XD
R@R, I pointed out last time that I couldn't use a Psychatog in an all-blue deck. Although I suppose Traumatise is the kind of card people build whole decks around, but I'm not that kind of player...
Yeah, true, lol. I was actually surprized to see Traumatize make it back into 9th Edition! I missed it completely, along with the whole Kamigawa set. I keep hearing that 9th Edition is an amazing one and thatno one wants it to go away.
I have a card that makes them discard half their deck!
http://otakuboards.com/showthread.php?t=48483&page=2&pp=15 My reply. Blue rules, but it stopped winning on its own after Beta. You can really control your opponent a lot better with Black in my opinion. Newer players won't see it coming, and Black still has responses for those that do know what you're up to. I like the versatility of the color, you just can't mind killing yourself a little. There's this really sick land that's coming out in Coldsnap that I want you guys aware of: Dark Depths Legendary Snow Land (Rare) Dark Depths comes into play with ten ice counters on it. 3: Remove an ice counter from Dark Depths. When Dark Depths has no ice counters on it, sacrifice it. If you do, put an indestructible legendary 20/20 black Avatar creature token with flying named Marit Lage into play. Illus. Stephan Martiniere #145/155 No activated ability of note, a first for a land. Just... wow. 30 mana later, which ain't bad, considering, you have an untouchable 20/20 flyer. You win. Maybe I'll get one this Sunday at the pre-release? Who knows?

"Aww!!!" @ Revelation It took me forever to come up wth someone, just because there's so many. Also, a lot of people I was friends with before somehow got banned since I've come back. What happened to Cloud/Tasis/Zeh? Anyways, aside from Nataniamon, whom I don't really care to see here, since I can pretty much talk to whenever, I looked back through my old posts and found this girl. :) Name: Rhys Mayiessen Profile: here Last seen: 2004 Why?: We ended up in a lot of the same RPG's, to memory, and I just always thought she was cool and nice and all that. I never really met her or really talked directly to her, and it didn't seem like anyone did. She went mostly unnoticed and I feel bad for people like that. We could'a been friends.

I'm a casual card game player. Right now I'm primarily into Magic, but being good friends with one of the current regional champions of Yu-Gi-Oh, I play a great deal of that, too. I only play during the summers, which is sad because I'm hardly rich enough to play in Type I tournaments and I have to buy a lot of new cards for making my antiquated deck Type II-legal every year. It's maddening, I should start up collecting and playing during school again. The best way that I've been getting my cards is through draft tournaments (where you take a card out of a pack that you want and pass the pack to the next person, then at the end you build a deck and play). I'm kind of happy that I have such a huge reputation at the card shop, though. The shop owner still remembers my name because I used to beat the store's representative pretty much everyday. So, are any MTG players going to the Coldsnap pre-release?

Gaming Memorable/Favourite Gaming Moments
Goodbye, Face replied to celestialcharm's topic in Noosphere
I remember I had some friends over last summer to play DDR. Well, we all got tired, and people started having to go. There was a handful of people left, so we tried playing Soul Calibur II with the dance pads. We ended up doing this until like 3 AM until we got really good at that. It's great that I'm awesome in SCII, but the fact that I can kick *** with a dance pad is a nice thing to rub in people's faces too. -
When I've been on actual dates (I've never "dated" most of my past girlfriends) I always take them to the city. Just park the somewhere and start walking. By shopping with her, you can both see eachother's interests. If you're hungry, there's restaurants. If you want to see a movie, I'm sure there's a cinema somewhere. But yeah, I'd suggest just walking down a few blocks shopping with her first, then see what she wants from there. I feel like I'm not worthy enough to give advice. XD

I knew about this place long before I had the internet, thanks to a friend named Joel, known here as Zidane11. He was working on a DragonballZ-related website, and as he was showing me that, he also showed me his favorite site for info, which happened to be TheOtaku.com. I remember seeing the forums before they were "OtakuBoards," I don't remember them having a domain name either. It was theotaku.com/boards, if I remember correctly. Anyways, every time I'd go to Joel's house, we'd end up visiting this site and the awesome forums. When I finally got the internet, TheOtaku was the first site I visited, and OtakuBoards was the first thing I registered for. Then you know, I left after a few years, then I came back last summer.
My good friend, RiflesAtRecess, introduced me to this forum, although it would be far more accurate to say that he spammed me until I gave in and decided to join. What made me stay (to an extent...) is the excellent community. The RP section didn't hurt, either. :)
;)

"I have been traveling for hours, blind as a bat. The torch went out long ago and since then I took notice to two parallel metallic strips at my feet that don't seem to end. I wonder where I am until I'm drawn closer to the light at the end of this tunnel to observe they are train tracks. Oh, the irony." http://artpad.art.com/gallery/?j1muck1kl4yk There you go. I wonder if this really has that effect on anyone.

:O Is that the RX78? Your stuff rocked! DIdn't know you were still around. Anyway, Ketzel, I really like your style. The second one is a little too messy though, so I can't really say anything great about it. The characters kind of have an evil aura around them, which looks like it was what you were going for. I'd like to see more sometime!

What OtakuBoards members would you like to meet?
Goodbye, Face replied to Boo's topic in General Discussion
The List Sage Kaley: I honestly don't know what I can say about her anymore. I think it all transcends words entirely. I just have to meet her right now. She's the nicest person I've ever (met) and she's helped me through more than what she's aware of. Her and Doc caught me at the worst time in my life and I came out of it completely changed for the better. I owe pretty much my entire life to Kisha. Plus, I'd also like to see how all those random moments of our AIM convo's would translate into real life, since we always wonder about that. Nataniamon: She hasn't had the time for OB in a very long time, but I still talk to her when I can. I consider her my first true internet friend, and I owe her a nice chunk of my life as well. Friends 'til the end! Doc: When I met him, I thought he was suicidal or something. I think one of the first ten lines he said to me was "sorry, sir!" Haha, my how that's changed. While crap is always happening to him, and my life's volume has been at 11 since I met him, we've become the best of friends in that we can tell eachother anything. I think he hears even more than Kisha, I can't be sure of that, though, lol. Revelation: Man, I remember back when she had first joined as KiaraStarr. Her first posts brought life to an RPG that me and Nataniamon were trying to keep alive with just the two of us for what I remember to be over a year. I lost contact with everyone for about a year after my computer got inflicted with some virus pain, and it took me a long time to build up the courage to speak to a lot of people. I knew I changed a lot and I was sure everyone else did. I was so happy to see that Erica remained the same, cheerful and funny girl I met years ago. ^^ John: So, Stuart started a chat and invited me. Everyone else pretty much left, then Tony, Des, Shin, Syk3, John, and who knows who else... I have the whole chat log somewhere... but they all arrived and I became instant friends with all of them, as it was my first time conversing with most of them. I think John was the funniest lad in the room. Honestly, I thought he was two years older than me as opposed to two years younger, he knows so much and has such sly jokes. XD John's the man. Tony: Yeah, he left, I don't care. I was immediately drawn to him, he just oozes coolness, much like the lameness Shin oozes, only much more fragrant. He has many interesting ideas, as evidenced in his handful of sites, and he's a great writer from what I've seen. We have matching opinions for a lot of things and I turn to him first for opinions on games. He's pretty hard to reach on AIM, whenever I catch him he happens to be at work, lol. I think I'd like to meet him just so there wouldn't be any escape! Haha! Dragon Warrior: I consider him another one of my first online friends, although between the two of us, we cannot remember how the hell we met. How pathetic is that? We'll call it destiny, because that's what it is. Our conversations are short and strange, and at times consist entirely of emoticons, but he is the coolest dude on the planet. I'm so happy to have met him. And really, I have so much to say about so many other people, but we'll stick with a list for now, I might elaborate later. James, DeadSeraphim, Boo, Stuart, Retribution, Shinmaru, and Jakehammaren. -
I actually have several friends who DJ as a hobby. It's more of an electronica thing, but me being exposed to it that much kind of opened me up a bit towards similar music. Thus, Hip-hop. Mainly underground stuff, I enjoy Sage Francis a lot. I've also enjoyed what I've heard of Jurrasic 5 but haven't really checked them out on my own (just in KC's car, haha). I've also liked what I've heard of Jay-Z's stuff, especially "99 Problems," mostly because it uses real instruments, which help a rock-oriented fan like myself. Hrm. So, any suggestions regarding where I should go next in terms of artists?
-
Jake, don't you mean Job for a Sponge? Yes, I know JFAC, I've met them. XD And I'm listening to ...uh... "checks* ...A-Asmegin on your profile as I type this and they're interesting. It's not totally my thing, but I can dig it. I'll probably look into them more later. :) And Jake as well as all you onlookers would do well in checking out The Demostration. THey're not a big favorite but they're good fun to listen to. I'll put a song up on my MySpace (how convenient!), which you can find a link to in my sig.
and emo, I rarely seen "emo" ...it's a genre of music, but I've only seen it put on one band, and that's Taking back sunday...Dashboard, which seems to be the hated "emo" band, isn't really under emo, but alternative. There's politics in music too, so it's always good to research it.
If you want to be technical, there isn't any difference between Emo and Screamo. Screamo isn't a real genre, but is instead a term used to differenciate the real emo created by bands like Saetia and Neil Perry, to the curent trend of alternative rock (or even pop-rock) "emo" bands like Taking Back Sunday. I'm not dissing them, hell, I go to school with Adam Lazzara's little brother, but it's not emo, kid. And I'm not even going to touch on the title of this thread. I'm pissed. As for calling screaming "art," I don't really know. I believe you can do the same extreme emotions by singing. I don't understand how a band like UnderOath can scream romantic things either, that's mostly what doesn't make sense. If you love someone, don't use the same vocal technique you use to show that you want to beat someone's face in. I think Protest the Hero and Opeth do screaming very well on the same token. They don't scream through entire songs, rather, they use it for dramatic effect (and you know that when PtH does it, it really means something due to how minimized the screaming is). I think if you listen to the right music, you can consider it an art. But when you get down to some of the "xcore" bands, you have this problem where they really overdo it.
-
Tical, you need to check out some Anthony Green projects like Circa Survive. So, I'm tired of talking about Circle Takes the Square, so I'm going to pimp a recent favorite, Protest the Hero. They play politipunk-flavored metal with aweosme progressions and time changes. Imagine Between the Buried and Me's sound with beautiful clean vocals that really tell a good story. Their newest album, Kezia, blows away everything I've heard since like 2003. Like Tical's favorite, Coheed and Cambria, Protest the Hero's worthy cd is a concept album featuring a story about a girl that eventually gets hung and becomes a martyr. It's really great stuff, and it's definitely refreshing to hear this kind of music with clean vocals and minimal screaming. More bands need to do it.
-
I've dropped out of metal music almost entirely, mostly due to obtaining broadband internet, lol. I've gotten into the whole emo genre, the real, oldschool emo. Bands like Saetia, Hot Cross, Pg. 99, Orchid, Ampere, soforth. As far as metal goes, I do enjoy a good metalcore kick. Sorry, Jake. I was the first person to buy The Demonstration's debut cd, Existence. They're Killwhitneydead's live band, which is pretty awesome. They play technical metal with some really odd and brutal vocals. Trevor has an interesting voice. I also greatly enjoy The Taste of Blood, Killing Theory, and Animosity, which are all very similar bands from the same record label. Outside of that, I haven't really found anything that's really excited me. DragonForce is GREAT to clean to though, lol. EDIT: I forgot Protest the Hero. What the hell? They are probably the best Metal band (with a bit of a punk influence) that I've heard in a very long time. They're kind of like A Bullet For My Valentine and Between the Buried and Me's lovechild, without the two bands' crappy lyrics. You need to hear them, Jake. ;)
-
I added you guys on MySpace, I'm Kevin with the green default picture. Your band rules Jake, although my current tastes go for faster vocals. I understand that's not your style. I'm interested in how it got started since you live in different states. :)
-
(I'm not going to go through each of the tracks, I don't really see the point after four other people doing it.) I still have my leak, and honestly, it's not a cd I'm interested in picking up. It just feels like they either become the mainstream or the mainstream becomes them with each release. This time, their sound was pre-existing. Before, I would never compare AFI to UnderOath or From First to Last, but now they sound like a mix between the two bands to me. Especially if you hear what's on UnderOath's new album. Do I also sense some Hawthorne Heights? Yuck! But really, while the first four songs are decent, plus maybe a few cool parts in other songs; none of them even come close to songs like "The Leaving Song II" or "Dancing Through Sunday," or much if any of their older stuff.
