Who the **** is Misfits?!
!#&$@*$!!! http://www.myspace.com/themisfits They're one of the best and most influential punk bands of all time. Now never bring up the Misfits again.

Tool is a Progressive Rock band, but their fans are stupid and call it Progressive Metal. Whatever. The "metal" that they're talking about is probably more derived from Nu-Metal than Metal, and we've had that discussion. Progressive Rock is a confusing genre to begin with, so I won't even go there. And to clear up stuff about Alternative Metal, it refers to stuff such as Soundgarden and Faith No More. It's basically metallic music that you hear on the radio, but isn't really Nu-Metal. I guess what sets this apart is the lack of some sort of screaming in the vocals (ooooo wah-ah-ah-ah!). This stuff probably doesn't fall under Jake's definition of metal either, but I much enjoy the two bands I mentioned. If you don't like Soundgarden in particular, I don't know what's wrong with you. Why is it that in every discussion about Metal we get wrapped up in what genre things are, etc. There should be something of a guideline, but at the same time, it's not something we should base this whole thread by. Genres are boring and they don't do much except cause arguments. For Thor's sake, guys.
Crowbar-I have Failed It's pretty good. I have liked every sludge metal band I have heard so far. (Acid Bath and Crowbar). Can anyone suggest to me some good Sludge metal bands?
I made a post in the current metal thread with a list of sludge metal bands I like. Basically, High on Fire, Kylesa, Baroness, and Saviours.
-
I personally don't like the vocals of High on Fire, but they match well with the music at least. I just love the constant assault that they are able to pull off with one guitarist and one bassist. Blessed Black Wings is an experience, not all the songs sound like that, but "Devilution" is intense right from the beginning with the opening drums. I wonder what song you heard. And also, the Isis record I recommended is an older one, it isn't their post-metal stuff, it's definitely face-meltingly heavy. They have three solid tracks on there and the rest are demos of songs that were never really released anywhere else. And these are Jake's bands, I hate talking for him when he's not around: http://www.myspace.com/gallowbraid http://www.myspace.com/elderfrost

Yes, I know, but it actually fit with the music and wasn't completely creepy or awkward. I hate it when he says these vile things and chants it in a happy tone. It's not fun music if it just makes you uncomfortable. With "I need Mayo!" (that's a character's name, not mayonnaise) it's at least not obvious enough that any CoCa-oblivious friends of yours will be like "wait... what?" as they will with the more clearly-understood weirdness in Volume 1. And "Heartshot Kid Disaster" is one of my more favorite tracks on that album, I don't know what's wrong with you. :p
-
What? Mine aren't good enough? Jerk! :p I could post some specific albums for you to check out in your spare time. Here's a small list. Stoner/Sludge Metal High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings (edit: I had "Qings," that's funny) Isis - The Red Sea Kylesa - Kylesa Kylesa - Time Will Fuse Its Worth Saviours - Crucifire Technical/Math/Instrumental Metal Behold... the Arctopus - Skullgrid Dysrhythmia - Barriers and Passages Canvas Solaris - Sublimation And I mean, half of OB's opinion of metal is Jake's. We all know what he likes, here's his last.fm: http://www.last.fm/user/Vargablod/ You can just go down the list one by one and just have a week-long metalgasm. (he even has himself listed on there! What a douche!)
-
As always, your stuff is incredible and they'd be stupid not to accept you. But still, congrats. I'm thinking that first shirt design with the spray painted background would be expensive as hell to make, though.
See why genre is a stupid classification and why it shouldn't have sub-genre's.
I'm sorry you don't understand genres, maybe you should stop trying to use them.

Okay, Revolver, I'll play.
Well, if Serj isn't metal, then SOAD was, and they are just as amazing.
Just because you think a band is "amazing" doesn't mean they're metal. Being metal has nothing to do with talent or how much people like you. In fact, SOAD is a perfect example of what Nu-Metal is in its clearest definition.
Dragonforce is going to be on GH3, liek ZOMG! Over 5 minutes of mind-bending, *** pulverizing, gut-wrenching metal. Mi hormons are rising.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MIleK5CRcjo

I never said that "Welcome Home" was their best song. It was just the only song on Volume 1 that I actually LIKED. AT ALL. Everything on Second Stage Turbine Blade completely destroys that song. I've only listened to the whole album once, but there wasn't any completely awkward parts in it like chanting "I hope you die right now, will you drink my chemical?" all through a song on Volume 1. They didn't sacrifice the musicality so they could tell their story like they did before. There are kind of bland songs on it, but there always is.

C'mon Rev, just delete your post [Edit: lol, both of them], we don't need another rant from the Viking Lord of the 'Boards. As far back as I care to look, the beginning of Nu-Metal was when Anthrax teamed up with Public Enemy for the song "Bring the Noise." That's about when they broke out into the public and bands like Limp Bizkit (or however it's spelled) started copying them to gain fame. Of course, anytime something gets that popular, it gets washed out into pop music, just look at the wave of grunge music that Black Flag's album My War started. I can understand early Nu-Metal being categorized as a sub-genre of metal, but say... Atreyu's new stuff? Disturbed? Slipknot? That stuff's not even CLOSE to metal, it's more associated with grunge, if anything. On top of that, there's metalcore. It's a bunch of guys who should be playing punk but want to play heavy chugging riffs. I absolutely HATE most of these bands because they tend to be made up creatively stagnant or otherwise untalented high school drop-outs copying eachother. You have the popular ones like Killswitch Engage (who SUCK), and then there's thousands of bands who sound exactly like them with slight variations. As far as what I like about metal, I'm not too into cultural melodies in it. That's more of a punk thing to me. If I'm going to listen to metal, it's gotta be something that kicks my ***, like High on Fire. Actually, if you haven't heard them, look up their myspace, and check out the song "Devilution," that's everything I like about metal right there. I also like really technical metal like Behold... the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia, and Canvas Solaris. In face, Arctopus' new cd is AMAZING. I was mouthing "holy ****!" all the way through it. It's too bad real talent doesn't make money.
-
There were a bunch of people talking about the new Coheed and Cambria album and I'm listening to it now. The album is a whole bunch of... okay... to me. There is no "Welcome Home" on it, but there aren't any terrible songs on it either. The only song I really care for on it is "The End Chapter III: The End Complete," which starts kinda calm but then it just explodes into a classic metal sound, I want to say Slayer, but I'm not totally sure. I won't even mention my feelings about the name of the song. I just want to know how they keep Chris Pennie awake while he's playing for them.

Your first post at an anime message board is asking for advice on women? These are whiny nerds that you're asking! GIRLS DON'T LIKE US. As far as an actual response goes, you never said if you liked this girl or if you're creeped out by it. If you like her, it's better that you let her know as soon as possible (but not if you JUST met), if you don't, they'll quickly find someone else. It happens all the time.]

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
I'm personally sick of hearing about mewithoutYou, EVERYONE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 13 AND 18 AND THEIR GRANDMOTHER LISTENS TO THIS BAND. They're different, but at the same time, they appeal to a WIDE range of people, Christian Metalcore idiots who will listen to anything and everything with the Solid State / Tooth and Nail stamp on it (that's where you fit in!), hipsters, hipsters with bad hair, hipsters with tight pants, and scene chicks who only like the scene and not the music. I think we can all agree that these are some of the most annoying people in the world. First Maylene, now this. Get out of this thread, Nomura. :D At least Revolver's fun to pick on. -
This sarcasm's gotta go, guys. Sorry. New members would come in and just get either confused or offended. Also, we need more threads about masturbation, those really draw crowds. And there's definitely not enough double-posting.

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians

I actually know stuff about TSOAF, they're one of my favorite bands. Basically, what's going on with their albums is that it's a side project for members of popular post-hardcore and alternative rock bands to play something different in. Before their only four shows in the west coast, the band had never met eachother. Instead, the artists were asked to mail in recordings of basically whatever they wanted and they would be put together into coherent music. The artists could not hear other parts of the music until the CD's came out. I personally really like Tiger and the Duke leaps and bounds over Lover, the Lord Has Left Us. Tiger was a brilliant mix of electronics and light-hearted hardcore while the majority of Lover was really just noises put together to make beats and various vocalists singing over them. And DB, I don't know what you expect from screams, I know you listen to them and respect them because you listen to Isis, Agalloch, and other aggressive bands. So do you not like Anthony's screams because they're high pitched? He has a shitload of talent and I'm sorry you don't see that. -
Dimmu [Borgir] A7X
This is almost cute. I enjoy talking about my hatred of A7X so I'll jump in. So, "M. Shadows" has some sort of impairment that makes him unable to use his vocal chords or something. I get it. He didn't do the respectful thing and step down so another vocalist could take over, instead, he became a cocky little ***** who acts like a mix of Axl Rose and Kanye West; talking **** about bands that are better than his own. I mean, in all honesty, anyone who has heard any Dillinger Escape Plan ("M." made fun of them) song knows that uhh... Matt Sanders... can't really say anything bad about them. I mean, you don't have to like DEP, I understand. They're intense. But you have to recognize the talent. My friend didn't get it, so I told him to tap his foot in 4/4 (just tapping your foot and counting 12341234...). Then, I told him as he's tapping his foot, to clap his hands 7 times within those 4 beats. Welcome to the simplified life of their drummer, Chris Pennie / Gil Sharone. So, uhhh... if math metal is pretentious to you, check out DEP's new cd coming out on my birthday next month. :) They have a song from it on their MySpace. -

I downloaded the rest of Alcest's Souvenirs and I put it on while I was doing homework. Much like Jesu, his songs all pretty much sound the same, at least when you don't pay attention to it. I need to really listen to the album in detail but I don't have the time. :( I guess there is such a thing as too epic. What caught me off guard is his MySpace, haha. He seems completely disinterested in talking to his fans at all. He's basically like "I don't read my comments, don't bother. Here's my email, serious inquiries only." Sounds kinda stuck-up and... pretentious. Billy Shears (and maybe even Jake!) is(/are) going to want to punch me for mentioning this band here, but uhh... THE LOCUST. That's right, I said it. The members are jerks who are really talented but it's almost a waste because their music is mostly incomprehensible. Most of it is really intense speed punk made with synth noises and ridiculously distorted guitars, all four members screaming at you at once. If you're interested in checking them out, I recommend their album Plague Soundscapes. Their new one, New Erections, has one good song and the rest is trash. I mean, they're different. And yes, they always wear those costumes. -
Bad side effects OF Fanfiction and Watching anime
Goodbye, Face replied to sayoeimomo's topic in General Discussion
It might have something to do with 99% of fanfiction writers being ridiculously bad at their craft. That more than likely has the same mind-numbing effect as watching reality tv, haha. Seriously, though. Too much sitting around without enough movement, forcing your brain to make sense of colored lights all day is probably bad for you. Probably. -

Hot damn, you can read me like a book, Jake. I can't listen to any of their stuff but what's on their myspace yet, since I'm on the campus internet, but I'm absolutely enthralled. They're like a mix of Jesu, Mogwai, and Envy. With that said, there's other stuff out there that is like it, but this is basically what this thread is all about! haha I just had to respond immediately, lol. EDIT: Yes, DB. Maps & Atlases is the best band. Ever. -
Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
I checked out the stuff from Three Cherries on their site and it was okay, they'd be good to chill out to. Something is off in the music (and definitely the singing) but it sounds like it's supposed to be that way, like in Godspeed You! Black Emperor's music. It makes their music, especially "Tripped On Your Cape," sound somber and depressing. Ultimately, it's different in a good way and that's what this thread is about. and if you liked 'Powers and how often they change time signatures, I'd suggest you check out Cinemechanica, the drummer and one of the guitarists are in it. They play some punk-flavored math rock that takes influence from 8-Bit music. They had a second drummer for about a year but he quit to focus on his own band (who I'll probably end up talking about here too). They're not big into vocals, the new songs they've written barely have them at all, but when they have them, they're pretty good for uhh... dueling yells. Every member of this band is amazing at what they do, I got into the band because of the guitars, but I ended up being even more impressed by the drums. If I had a top ten, they'd be in there somewhere. -

It's not even popularity that is the issue. This thread is (or should be) more for music that is too "out there" for a general audience. Genre isn't an issue either, but Nu-Metal and some Hardcore are pretty much out due their tendency to rip off of other, more popular artists (I could name about 50 local bands that are complete rip-offs of Norma Jean off the top of my head). And way to go, Rev. I got about halfway through the video before AOL stopped loading it. It's pretty bland, generic rock. I mean, what can I say. The video was charming, at least. So, my contribution is 'Powers. They're a new project started by the members of Cinemechanica, We Versus the Shark, 300 Cobras, and Coulier. Basically, it's Cinemechanica's drummer, Mike Albanese, surrounded by four guitarists positioned in relation to secondary directions on a compass. They play instrumental post-rock that gets pretty heavy at times, I've heard that the guitarists chase eachother around in a circle when things get especially hectic. Since they're a new band with a handful of shows under their belt, they do not have a CD out yet, what they do have is a live recording of their third show here. It's done by the people that run the venue and the band promotes it, so I don't think I'm breaking any rules by linking to these .mp3's. Check them out if you're interested. I haven't really been able to stop listening to them. >_> -

Rev: "Mostly just the metal metal, like Disturbed and all that stuff..." Jake: "And Disturbed is not "metal metal". Disturbed isn't a metal band at all, actually." Rev: "They are Nu Metal, which isn't metal at all." . . . I haven't been around in a little while and I just saw this. Honestly, I don't understand why bands like Mudvayne, Disturbed, and even Maylene & The Sons of Disaster are being mentioned in this thread. Look at the first few pages of this thread and the kind of examples we set in the beginning. We had rock music that is written in 17/44/whatever time signatures, sprawling metal epics, concept albums, orchestral punk bands, hybrid rock... Stop posting about bands you hear on the radio along with millions of other people and expecting to have some sort of valid argument. That's not being "pretentious," even though that's a pretty nasty word (used in a joking sense of course) to begin with. Honestly, it's just stupid and causes a lot more arguments than what's necessary. -

I like drone metal, so I'm unaffected, haha. Their Pink album has some pretty normal sounding hard rock. I don't know how to describe their music at all. And yes, that was the point, Rev. He was making it sound like the talk. -
J-rock is good music, and it has some great sounds. Really it comes from Japan, and they have some pretty good stuff on the market.
Normally I stick to one bomb on you per day but... What are you trying to say?! "Japanese music is Japanese" pretty much covers it, I think. Okay, I'm done. As far as this topic goes, I'm a huuuuuge fan of a band called Envy, they're kind of like Isis in the sense where they started playing heavy stuff but then it got pretty. There's also Boris and Melt Banana. The former plays various types of rock and metal that kind of depends on the album, and Melt Banana plays stuff that sounds like the bastard child of Deerhoof and The Locust. Links are bolded, I'm not like you guys going around bolding every little thing.
