Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
stuff.
I had some free time today, so I took another listen to the songs that you recommended that I have. I ignored the folk melodies because I knew that was part of the whole viking shtick. Generally, I'm turned off by that in metal music (but not in punk... weird) but Amon Amarth never seems to go full blast into dragon-slaying mode because there's a constant chugga chugga thing going on. Most of the viking/folk metal I've heard has parts where the entire band is devoted to these ethnic dance-y melodies, but AA feels like it only has half of that. It's brutal, but it feels light-hearted too, kind of like As I Lay Dying again. Most of the verses (other than the above folksy parts) consist of hammering the bass E string and some quick notes of a higher pitch, which is the "metal" in "metalcore," usually. That's what I heard and that's what I remarked on. And Revolver, I don't like Mastodon, but you can't say **** about them being generic. You listen to Breaking Benjamin. You can't win. EDIT: *hi-fives DB* -
EDIT 2: Actually, ****, you'd prolly like The sound of animals fighting. Their ****ing amazing. Skip the first song, though, if you have a low tolerance for really bad screams.
I'm insulted! hahaha Anthony's (excuse me... The Skunk's) one of the best singers on the planet. Ever. People tend to like his screams (that's what gave Saosin their popularity early on), and so do I. Sorry that you don't like them, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're really bad. Actually, if you like The Mars Volta, you have no excuse for not picking up "Lover, the Lord Has Left Us" by TSOAF. I'd tell you some other bands to check out, but I'm already pissed that you're merely a year behind me musically, now. :p I've been listening to a new band called 'Powers, from Athens, GA. One drummer, FOUR GUITARISTS. It's a side project between Cinemechanica, We Versus the Shark, and two other bands. The only material of theirs that currently exists is a recording of their third live show from last week (http://www.southernshelter.com). Check it out if you like guitars. It's got a bit of a video game sensibility to it also, but you'd expect that if you know anything about the bands that make up 'Powers.

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
Meh, Papa Roach had some okay stuff on Infest. I dug it when I was 11. And I wasn't pigeonholing Amon Amarth into the metalcore genre. I'm aware of what they are. They'd be a good springboard to get your scene kid friend into real metal, though. I don't know, I think the main thing was that a lot of it just seems like really simple riffs without much variation. Put one of their verses next to a verse from oh... Phoenix Bodies... and tell me what the difference is. Amon Amarth just feels too "chugga chugga" to me compared to even some more bland metal bands like Saviours. They just seem to borrow a lot of their riffs from stuff like As I Lay Dying. My my, Jake. You're looking fabulous today. -

Dude, you listen to Breaking Benjamin. That's probably why you think there's a decline in rock music. And I don't see that much of a difference between Amon Amarth's music and Metalcore. Seriously. Is that because I've only heard With Oden on Our Side? It's basically metalcore with solos instead of breakdowns. Jake's gonna be pih-hissed. -
Yeah, he's like that with every post he makes. Dead weight. So, I'm secretly in love with The Bled, if you didn't know. Their new album comes out soon and they have the whole thing on their MySpace (http://myspace.com/thebled). It's pretty consistent with their other stuff, I wouldn't call it better or worse than any of their albums, because that's a really hard decision to make. Their albums have always been amazing. It's worth a listen if you're into post-hardcore like Every Time I Die and Scarlet (I'm afraid to call them metalcore because they're so much more talented than that!)
I mean he is basically the best musician in Mudvayne
That really says a lot. I lol'd. I'd like to second Billy Shears on the godly guitar duo in Maps & Atlases. There's a video on YouTube of the guitarist who also does the vocals playing one of the songs by himself and it seems like he could carry an entire band all on his own. Their songs have to be damn near impossible to write, and I know for a fact that I can't even come close to duplicating their tapping style at all. You know a musician is good when you can hardly fathom how their music is possible. It's not like they're death metal or anything, it's actually a very peaceful band, and I suggest that everyone who reads this checks them out.

New Members: Introduce Yourselves Here
Goodbye, Face replied to Charles's topic in General Discussion
I'll be the first oldie to introduce himself. :) Hi, I'm Kevin. I joined in 2001. I left for a year and a half sometime around 2003 or 2004, when I rejoined. I was referred to here by my long-time best friend Zidane11, who got me all excited about this place before I even had internet, so when I finally got it, OtakuBoards was what the internet was all about! It still kind of is, the people are friendly (or at least unique, such as in DigitalBoy's case), and I've been lucky enough to get to know many of them very well. I'm really passionate about creating, supporting, and listening to music. I listen to all kinds of stuff, but at the same time, nothing you've heard of. I originally came here because I loved Dragonball Z and Final Fantasy, and both series had their own separate forums, years back. Now I basically ***** at people in the music threads, talk about videogames, and read about what interesting anime are coming out (I don't ever post in that forum, though!). I'm currently in college for an art degree, but I might transfer to a school where I can learn some about graphic and web design. I'm thinking that's what I want to do. Buuuut I'm a pretty "go with the flow" type of person and I tend to just let my life take me down whatever road feels right at the time. I'm usually really nice, and I'm friends with maybe half of the staff and otherwise respectable people here. I don't really know how that happened. Oh, and I hate it when people bold things they like or even random words. -
I run Roadrunner Lite, which is done through AOL. Yes, I know. It's a cable connection that is supposedly super fast, but I've never seen a download above 100kb/s. I have wifi in my house, which is good because there's two laptops in the house now, this computer, my Xbox 360, and sometimes my DS sucking up bandwidth. Setting up my router was probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I've seriously never been more frustrated. I still can't get port forwarding to work, despite having a really detailed guide on it for my specific router. It's a piece of crap that I have to unplug it then replug everyday to get it to work. Leave it to my dad to get the cheapest one he could possibly find. The wifi at my college is amazing, though. I've gotten something like 600kb/s on it once.

Gaming I'm looking to find the greatest RPG game out there. Any thoughts?
Goodbye, Face replied to Vigilance's topic in Noosphere
Oh man! I always forget about Legend of Legaia! Honestly, that was probably one of the best RPG's ever made. As far as I know, it was mostly ignored (didn't it come out around the same time as FFVIII?). That game was so cool, though. It combined RPG's with a little bit of a fighting game flair, the only other games that did anything like that were the extremely rare Tobal games. Also, there's Vagrant Story, but I don't know how difficult it'll be to find that. I have the game so I'm not exactly looking on eBay for it. The game gets really hard, and it gives you so much freedom that it's possible to get lost in some dungeon you're not supposed to be in until you've beaten a handful of bosses you've accidentally skipped. >_>... But it's a great game with what I think is the best story on the Playstation. There's also a lot of depth in how you customize your weapons, there's so much to choose from early on that it can be overwhelming. Also, someone recommended some Suikoden games and I think that the first one should be added to the list (if you can get it for cheap, it's probably not worth any more than $40). It's the only one I've played in the series, actually, so I'm probably missing out on some great stuff. You basically squat on a castle, recruit 108 of your homies to live in your castle, and go on a rampage around the world destroying a corrupt empire. The only thing that really bugged me is how linear the story elements are. I would be running in and out of my castle getting new people to join and suddenly the elf dude would be dying at my doorstep asking me to save his people and I would be plunged into a quest for 10 hours and then having to go back later and get all the people I missed. I'm really long-winded. Fun game, though. -

Any of the PS2 Shin Megami Tensei games you can find, Persona 3 being probably the best and Devil Summoner being at the bottom of the list. Generally, people who like Disgaea also like SMT (they both glorify demons like no other game dares to do) although they're completely different games. Honestly, your only excuse for not playing these is because they get discontinued rather quickly, but at least Persona 3's still around, it just came out about a month ago. If you want more information on the games, you can check out Semjaza's website: http://www.digitaldevildb.com/ Also, why does everyone hold Xenogears so high in regard? Everything about it felt cheap and boring. I bought it for $35 and sold it for double the price. :) -
Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
Well, in most cases, that guy is the bassist. The guy in the red who is playing the cello is usually the guitar player, but he plays other stuff too. When I saw them, he traded off with the drummer for two songs. -
So you are gay and religious? What's the big deal? Did Jenna like you? Sounded like you were just friends. Was she too religious or something?
He didn't mean "came out" in the gay sense, but in the "revealing the truth" sense. I'd tell you the big thing you missed, but really you should just re-read it. Kam, I remember you as Justin. Actually, all I really remember was your temper. I must've left before you revealed yourself, but when I saw you as Kam a year and a half ago, I couldn't connect the two, even though I saw "Justin" in your previous usernames. Crazy. I don't really know what to say, but I'm glad you posted this. It's good to get that out, sometimes.

Pretentious Music for Pretentious Musicians
Goodbye, Face replied to Jakehammaren's topic in Noosphere
I saw this live the other day and I was just blown away: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8fUJxOS0BGw It's the middle part of three, if you want to see more. I think the video is pretty self-explanatory. They're Invisible, I think they're pretty new, and they play some ridiculously weird music that I can't even explain. They play a lot more instruments than what's shown in any of the videos. -
This guy makes really trippy shooting games. I highly recommend Torus Trooper, as well as anything else you see that looks interesting. GunRoar isn't that great in my opinion. DOS Games is full of old shareware and freeware games, including the first 1/3 of Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood. As for my favorite Flash games, just google "Boxhead: More Rooms" and "fl0w." Boxhead is a cute little zombie shooter with a lot of cool weapons. fl0w is of course the original version of the PSN game, where you zip around eating creatures and getting bigger.

I picked up just the base game years ago for like $7 and never really grasped it. I've watched some people play D&D before, but me actually playing it is a different story. It's just a lot to take in at once and I never really mastered it. I actually installed it on my new laptop on a whim, and it runs very nicely on max settings... which isn't all that impressive, haha. It'd be nice if I could fix it so I could run the game without the disc so I could play it at college without burning through my battery. The odd thing is, I was thinking about seriously sitting/laying down and playing tonight. You have further inspired me.

1.) Long or short Long for a guy. Depending on where it is on my head, my hair can be anywhere from two inches to almost a foot. (here's a stupid picture of me) 2.) Color Brown, it has a lot of red and blond parts though. My facial hair is much redder than my actual hair. 3.) Have you dyed it? In the beginning of ninth grade, my girlfriend bleached my hair and then dyed it lime green. I loved it but once my hair grew longer mom made me cut it out. 4.) If you have dyed it, what colors has it been? Oh, whoops. 5.) What length do you prefer on the opposite sex? Honestly, it depends on the person. Some people look better with long hair than short hair and vice-versa. There is no one hairstyle that works perfectly with every girl. I will say that redheads turn me on, fake or not.

Wasn't ZOE2 taken off store shelves in America? I didn't have the money to buy it immediately so I rented it right when it came out, and by the time I returned the rental, I NEVER saw another copy of the game ever again. And I've never played Dark Cloud 2, but the first one was pretty freakin' terrible. Jade Cocoon and Zone of the Enders were amazing games to begin with, that I recall. So that doesn't really fit.

All the classic Mega Man games, the X series included. I own most of the original NES carts, and I have both collections. Whenever I'm bored, I play through Mega Man 2 and try to beat it without dying (and I can!). I grew up on this series and every time I play one of the games now it has the same effect on me as it did then. Contra and Super C, I started playing these again and I was shocked at just how good I am at these games. Super C is the better of the two in my opinion, and I play it far more. I really only start dying in the last level, which is good, because it takes me like every life I've gained throughout the game to get through it. I can't say I STILL play these games, because I didn't have them as a kid, but the first three Ninja Gaiden games are such a headrush. It's so intense to just zip around the levels killing everything and trying not to get knocked off of platforms. I think Wild 9 was the last game I've played that really captures that old school feel that all these games give me. I just wish I could beat any one of these Ninja Gaiden games, haha. Finally, The Guardian Legend was pretty much my favorite game as a kid, but playing it now, I realize some of its flaws, like the fact that it's so open-ended that you have no idea what to do. I remember using Game Genie as a kid to skip to a different area just so I could get past this weird part in the middle. Aside from the game being really confusing, it's a great blend of 1945 and Zelda, hahaha. Oh, and on the subject of Pokemon, I literally had to HIDE MY DS to keep me from playing Pokemon Diamond.

Gaming Much Needed Advice... [Games, of course.]
Goodbye, Face replied to Zidargh's topic in Noosphere
Pokemon D/P again, because those wretched games stole 300 hours of my life. If you want the biggest time-waster known to man, I don't think it gets any better. Also, yes, get the Xbox 360 and join us Group Sounds brothers on Xbox Live! -
I'm proud that I've been able to call some of the coolest people I know my friends. I'm proud of my city, for the most part. It's a small place with a lot of art and grassroots organizations. It just feels like large corporations have no place there. I'm proud of and very thankful for everything I'm lucky enough to have, as well as the experiences I've been lucky enough to have been a part of. I'm proud of my AMAZING taste of music. :p I'm proud to be straightedge. I'm proud of how abnormal I am. And what I'm not proud of is my body, but I'm workin' on it.

Generic thread spotted. My current love is anything and everything ever by Panthers. They simply cannot put out a bad song. At first, their music just sounds like normal rock, but in repeated listens, there's just so much brilliance in this band; the lyrics, the emotional guitar riffs, everything is just absolutely perfect. If I had to pick a song, it'd be "Thanks for the Simulcra," some of the lyrics are in my signature right now.

Advice Request - School Future
Goodbye, Face replied to 2010DigitalBoy's topic in General Discussion
I went through a really tough senior year in high school. I took a whole bunch of honors and AP classes, core and elective, to get college credit hours and to prepare myself for college. When I went to my college's orientation, I found out that my weighted GPA and my AP creds meant ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, the credits went to elective classes that i really don't have any interest in. I was really bummed out. So it's important to consider what will ACTUALLY BE USEFUL to you in college. Not everything is. -

IV is seriously Coheed's worst album, but then again, if you can actually stand/like "The Suffering," I guess you'll love it. Please, do us all a favor and get The Second Stage Turbine Blade instead. One of the best albums I've ever heard, ever. Every album of theirs since has been a major disappointment.
