Anime Stuff You Wish Clapping Your Hands Could Fix
Desbreko replied to The Spectacular Professor's topic in Otaku Central
[color=#4B0082]First thing that comes to mind? My bedroom window. It's been cracked for about fifteen years now and there's actually a large piece of it not connected to the outer frame at all anymore. Every time a big storm comes through I'm afraid it's finally going to shatter, leaving my room (and my PC right near said window) open to the elements. Second thing, the cord on my old headset. It worked perfectly for a couple years until the stupidly thin wire broke in one spot along the cord and bam, no more sound out of the headphones. That's all that's wrong with it. I actually like my new headset more but not $30-because-they-were-cheap-as-hell-with-the-wiring more.[/color] -
[color=#4B0082]OB currently doesn't use any form of CAPTCHA images for verification, but instead it asks a question and a correct answer has to be entered into the form. Both the questions and corresponding answers are completely customizable, and after the first couple spam posts recently I went through and changed all of them. Obviously it doesn't seem to have helped... I kind of doubt any form of CAPTCHA would be more secure than this, though. Whereas bots can use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software on CAPTCHA images, they'd have to be able to actually read and understand the questions in order to enter the correct answers since each forum that uses this type of verification has its own set of questions. I don't know a lot about bots, but it seems like that would be a whole lot more complicated than simply OCRing images and spitting out the result. I'll look around on vBulletin.org for more anti-spam hacks.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]I actually thought of it about a month ago, I was just lazy in putting it up. Partly because I wanted to get the new table bbcode (I suppose I should make an announcement about that) added first, which required a couple hours of template tweaking and testing to make sure I didn't break anything while making the site's stylesheet play nice with stuff inside the td tags. By the way, if people want to start bringing up shows they'd like watch in Anime Club, that would be great. I figure OB here will provide a better place for that than in the Watercooler comments. I figure the way we'll start deciding new shows is having everyone able to nominate one anime for each time we switch shows. Anything is fair game as long as it's anime, not already super-popular like Naruto, Bleach, etc., and not too graphically explicit (think PG-13 level content or thereabout). I'll sort through the nominations and then, a couple weeks before the current show ends, I'll put up a poll to vote on which one or two of the nominations should be watched. And people can also keep nominating/voting through the Watercooler comments if they don't have an OB account. Personally, I'm pushing for [url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4823][u]Ichigo Mashimaro[/u][/url] (aka Strawberry Marshmallow) once Lovely Complex and Kurenai are over. It's one of my favorite straight-up comedies and has tons of really funny slapstick and sight gags. It's very cute but it doesn't feel at all forced; the little girls just act like little girls and it naturally ends up that way. There's no ongoing plot, either, so it would be easy for people to jump in and out if they can't make it some nights.[/color]

Rather than watching mainstream shows, however, we pick out good, yet lesser-known anime as an opportunity for people to enjoy new shows. Streaming links are usually provided for those without a copy of the anime. [b]Current Anime[/b] [url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7985][u]Genshiken 2[/u][/url] is the 12 episode continuation of the first season. Sasahara Kanji is now the chairman of Genshiken and the show follows his struggles in organizing the group to produce a doujinshi manga for Comic Fest. Meanwhile, the others have problems of their own. Graduation is fast approaching for the seniors and finding a job is no small task. [OFFICIAL] The OtakuBoards Nifty Fifty of 2008 - Nominations
Desbreko replied to Shy's topic in General Discussion
[color=#4B0082][b]Anime Season Threads[/b] ([thread=58478]Winter[/thread], [thread=58930]Spring[/thread], [thread=59254]Summer[/thread], [thread=59626]Fall[/thread]) These threads have been excellent for picking out new anime to watch, seeing what others are interested in, and talking about the shows once they start airing. [b][thread=58914]Caramelldansen Skin[/thread][/b] Maybe it's a bit pretentious to nominate something I did myself, but I don't care; the Caramelldansen skin is too awesome. The result of an April Fools prank turned into a crazy idea for a new skin, I banged it out in one furious week of work and am still surprised at how well it ended up being received. It was a lot of fun to make and even more to hear about people enjoying it. [b][thread=59917]Nathan and Indi's Engagement[/thread][/b] This joyous bit of news is so nifty that it warranted an exception to the no-all-caps setting. [b]theOtaku Chat[/b] It may not be part of OB itself, but a lot of OB regulars hang out there along with others from theO. It's sort of the successor to the crazy AIM chats that used to happen and it's been a great place to talk with people, meet new friends, and even drag some theO people over to OB. [b][url=http://www.otakuboards.com/member.php?u=8750]Petie[/url][/b] Besides moderating, he's done an awesome job with various technical tasks around the site as part of the development team. It's great to have someone around who's familiar with PHP, databases, [i]and[/i] the administrative side of vB, and working together with him as been a pleasure. [b][url=http://www.otakuboards.com/member.php?u=5277]Shinmaru[/url][/b] Shin's one of my longest standing online friends with whom I love geeking out together over video games, anime, or whatever else. I gotta give him a shout-out for another year of being an all-around awesome guy. [b]The Utah Crew[/b] Starting from SunfallE, Mariskah, Aaryanna, and Indi, this little group has gradually expanded with Aaryanna_Mom, Rachmaninoff, Sabrina, and Nathan. All of them are great people and they've contributed a lot to both OB and theO.[/color] -
[color=#4B0082]I can't really compare the two, since I don't have GHWT and haven't gotten a chance to play my friend's copy of it. But I have RB2 and I love it. There's a lot of great tracks on the disc (84 tracks total), plus there's 20 free downloadable tracks available. There's also some pay-to-download tracks available so far with tons more on the way; all the downloadable tracks available on the 360 and PS3 will gradually be released for the Wii version. The instruments are really high quality. Switching from a GH guitar to the RB2 guitar takes some getting used to, since the strum bar and frets feel a lot different, but it's worth it. The RB2 strum bar is [i]so[/i] much better for double strumming, I can't imagine going back to a GH guitar now. I can't compare the drums since I've never used the GHWT set, but I've heard bad things about it not being properly calibrated out of the box and the red pad being defective a lot. The RB2 drums are great, though, and I haven't had any problems with them yet. The bass pedal is metal reinforced, unlike the RB1 set, and the pads are quieter and have better bounce to them. The only downside to the RB2 drum set is that it won't work with the Wii version of GHWT.[/color]

Anime I need help in finding a new series to watch
Desbreko replied to Vigilance's topic in Otaku Central
[quote name='KimmehWolfwood'][COLOR="Indigo"][FONT="Arial"][SIZE="2"]Oh, and have you seen [B]Ranma 1/2[/B]? Same artist/mangaka as [I][B]Rurouni Kenshin[/B][/I], but it's more comedy filled.[/SIZE][/FONT][/COLOR][/QUOTE][color=#4B0082]Er, what? Ranma 1/2's author is Takahashi Rumiko; Rurouni Kenshin's author is Watsuki Nobuhiro. Are you thinking of Inuyasha, which was also written and drawn by Takahashi Rumiko? [b]Ranma 1/2[/b] is a great comedy, though, with a martial arts theme and bits of romance. I'd also recommend it. Another series I'd recommend is [b]Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle[/b]. It's got some good action and a great story to go with it. It can also be funny at times. The only bad thing is that the anime doesn't have a conclusion, with the manga still ongoing.[/color] -
[color=#4B0082]Also, the piece doesn't quite match up with Boo's; part of his is repeated in SaiyanPrincessX's. It looks like they were matched up together while making the new piece but then got cropped at the wrong point when saving the final image.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]Yeah, there's not as much that interests me this season either. On the other hand, MOAR SLAYERS! [hr]100[/hr] [b]Must Watch[/b] [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10305]Slayers Evolution-R[/url][/b][/u] It's more of the best fantasy/adventure series ever and continues the story from summer season's Revolution series. Of course I'm watching this. Why aren't you? [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10200]Maria Holic[/url][/b][/u] It's directed by Shinbo Akiyuki and animated by SHAFT. It's about a girl who's afraid of boys and her falling for a trap who's infiltrated an all girls school. This has to equal win. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10388]Minami-ke: Okaeri[/url][/b][/u] Both of the first seasons were absolutely hilarious so I'm very much looking forward to the third. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=9210]Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season[/url][/b][/u] Marimite is a wonderfully dramalicious series and I'm happy to get another season of it. And it should be interesting to see how Maria Holic contrasts with it. [hr]100[/hr] [b]Interested[/b] [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10134]White Album[/url][/b][/u] Simply the fact that it's a romance series not set in high school is enough to make me take a look. Then you throw in Hirano Aya and Mizuki Nana as the two female leads, who happen to work as idols (insert songs yesplz), and you've got a firm hold on my interest. I have hopes that this will be an excellent romantic drama. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10274]The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk[/url][/b][/u] The first season was good so I'm going to continue with the second. From the way the first ended, it looks like the story should also get more interesting. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10404]Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai[/url][/b][/u] It's a KyoAni original so I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Though I should probably get around to watching the two Munto OAVs before starting on this so I can see how they compare. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10223]Genji Monogatari Sennenki[/url][/b][/u] I've not read The Tale of Genji but I'd probably enjoy it, so I'll check out the anime. Though like Dagger, I'm also wondering how it's going to fit into only eleven episodes. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10179]Hetalia Axis Powers[/url][/b][/u] This just looks like a very fun little bite-sized show that'll be good for a laugh. [hr]100[/hr] [b]Worth a Look[/b] [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10291]Kemono no Souja Erin[/url][/b][/u] It sounds like it could be a decent fantasy series so I'll check it out. I can always use more good fantasy. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10272]Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo[/url][/b][/u] I'm not big on science fiction but this one looked like it could be amusing. My expectations aren't exactly high so we'll see if it can hold my attention. [u][b][url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=10187]Asu no Yoichi![/url][/b][/u] Ecchi slapstick comedy with a dash of romance. This could either be horribly funny or just plain horrible.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]My list ended up a fair bit different at the end of the season than in my last post so I'll follow suit I guess. Numbers in parenthesis are how many episodes I've seen out of the total. 01. [b]Toradora![/b] [size=1](10/25)[/size] 02. [b]Clannad ~After Story~[/b] [size=1](9/24)[/size] 03. [b]Tales of the Abyss[/b] [size=1](14/26)[/size] 04. [b]Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens[/b] [size=1](13/13)[/size] 05. [b]Shugo Chara!! Doki[/b] [size=1](13/51?)[/size] 06. [b]To Aru Majutsu no Index[/b] [size=1](13/24)[/size] 07. [b]Chaos;Head[/b] [size=1](12/12)[/size] 08. [b]Kyo no Gononi[/b] [size=1](13/13)[/size] 09. [b]Hyakko[/b] [size=1](7/13)[/size] 10. [b]Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka[/b] [size=1](12/12)[/size] 11. [b]Kemeko-DX[/b] [size=1](12/12)[/size] [b]Michiko to Hatchin[/b] releases from the group I've been following have been slow and I haven't seen enough of it yet to rate it. And I'm also hoarding episodes of [b]ef - a tale of melodies[/b] and DVD releases of [b]Hidamari Sketch × 365[/b] to watch once they're complete. I'm still waiting on my group of preference's releases of [b]Toradora![/b] so I haven't finished out the season's worth of episode of it yet. But from what I've seen and what I've heard of later episodes, it only gets better. It started off good and has been doing nothing [i]but[/i] getting better, until it finally clawed its way over Clannad to claim its position as my favorite of the season. [b]Clannad ~After Story~[/b] is basically just more Clannady goodness to match the first season. Which I am perfectly happy with, considering it can go from making me burst out laughing to fighting back tears in the span of a single episode if it wants to. Yes, I still wait for the widescreen versions so I'm behind. [b]Tales of the Abyss[/b] has provided me my fix of fantasy/adventure anime this season. I've not played the game, but so far the anime is doing a great job standing on its own. Not the best of its kind, but it's still excellent and I love the genre. [b]Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens[/b] faltered a bit at the end (it needs to stick to comedy; too much drama doesn't work well), but it also set things up for a second season. DO WANT. [b]Shugo Chara!! Doki[/b] has mostly been business as usual. Nothing too exciting but still plenty amusing, and a couple episodes have been some of the funniest in the entire series. Anything involving Nagihiko and Rima together is gold. [b]To Aru Majutsu no Index[/b] continues to seem like a better-done Shakugan no Shana to me, only with a loli instead of a tsundere. It's ranged from good to meh with its few mini-arcs but has never been bad. [b]Chaos;Head[/b] was not especially my kind of show to begin with. While it started out interesting, it gradually got to the point where I didn't care about the story and just wanted to see the girls kick *** with their giant swords. Oh yeah, and moe over Kozue's awesome twintails. The show's mythos did intrigue me but it went straight from total mystery to huge information dump and ended up spending more time explaining it?multiple times, at that?than actually doing things with it. [b]Kyo no Gononi[/b] gradually got better as it moved away from redoing stuff that had already been in the OAV to new chapters. But some of the new chapters were also not that great. Though I actually liked the new character designs, the series wasn't as consistently funny as the OAV. [b]Hyakko[/b] has been another average high school comedy. Not much to say here. I'll admit it now, the only reason I didn't drop [b]Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka[/b] was because of the pretty character designs and the awesome voice cast. There were a few funny bits here and there but otherwise that's all the show had going for it. I should probably put [b]Kemeko-DX[/b] above Akane-iro, but I [i]really[/i] liked Akane-iro's character designs and voice cast. Whereas I at least loved those two things about Akane-iro, Kemeko-DX was just overall mediocre. The best thing about it was two of the side characters being voiced by Kugimiya Rie and Noto Mamiko. And then the second was Kemeko being voiced by Saito Chiwa. There are much better shows out there for the kind of stupid/ecchi humor that the series focused on and the only reason I didn't drop it was because I had too much time on my hands.[/color]

[quote name='Magus']Storywise, I'm not sure what happened at the end. Pacifica is suppose to be the world's end and everything, but [spoiler]the lady that looked like her was the one to restore everything, was she not? Was she a part of Pacifica[/spoiler] or something?Pacifica didn't do much of anything to show that she was suppose to be the harbinger of death. I don't really count freezing time doing much of anything. Reason I asked was because she was given a choice to choose the world's fate.[/quote][color=#4B0082]If I'm remembering things right, [spoiler]Pacifica being the harbinger of doom and destruction was just the church's propaganda. She was actually the key to unlocking the world but the church, which was set up by the Peacemakers who sealed the world, was trying to stop that with its prophecies. The unlocking was supposed to take place upon Pacifica's death but it required that she mature to at least sixteen years old for her power to be great enough to manage it. However, she ended up being killed [i]right[/i] before she turned sixteen, resulting in a sort of limbo where her power and the seal on the world were balanced. I think the girl that looked like Pacific was the one who put the whole unlocking plan in motion way back when the world was first sealed. Pacifica was sort of her reincarnation.[/spoiler][/color] [quote name='Magus']Characters were pretty good, although there were a few characters that, while they were shown throughout the series, I don't know much of anything about them. Outside of them being loyal to Christopher. Speaking of Chris, he's my favorite next to Ciz/Siz. (?) That girly is something else. I normally see a lot of guys with that kind of attitude, but seeing it come from a woman is a bit refreshing. Certainly beats out the typical damsel in distress. The other characters were enjoyable as well. Although the one character that has gotten on my nerves was Leo. The whole "I will/must protect Pacifica" was just too tiring to hear. Especially when [spoiler]Furet (Too bad I couldn't see more of that guy. I would've liked to see him and Shannon cross paths.)[/spoiler] stepped into the picture.[/QUOTE][color=#4B0082]Yeah, I agree, I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see more of Chris and his followers. I liked most of the characters but there were a number that looked like they could've been really awesome if they had been developed farther.[/color]

[color=#4B0082][b]Naruto[/b] and [b]Bleach[/b] are basically no-brainers when it comes to series-specific forums. Nothing else currently matches their popularity. [b]Soul Eater[/b] is one to keep an eye on; it's been really popular among fansub watchers and it just got licensed by FUNimation. [b]Fullmetal Alchemist[/b] is getting another TV series later this year so it'll probably get super popular again. I'm not sure what they're based on or how often they're cycled but, if the series-specific forums work out, it seems like a good idea to at least have ones for the featured series portals on theO. (Which are currently Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Fruits Basket, and Bleach.) Besides the shows being popular, it would also provide some more consistency between theO and OB. If I remember right, we had talked about an automated way to cycle forums based on theO portal activity before, but I think doing it manually this way would also be good.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]Like the others have said, there's not really any way to get around this right now, except for using PM's instead of comments. The problem is, it's pretty much impossible to make a good automated system that can determine the difference between spam and an on-topic comment. So that's not really feasible. I think the best solution would be to allow a single comment to be a reply to multiple people. That seems like it shouldn't be too incredibly difficult to do. I'll also bug Adam about it the next time I talk to him.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]Funky. It looks like it's trying to put the div with the time stamp and last post button on the same line as the previous div with the posted by name. But, even then, they're not quite aligned... I looked at the HTML and that really shouldn't happen, and since I'm not seeing it in my browser I'm pretty sure it's not a bug in the code. I'd try backing up your Firefox profile directory (normally found at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles) and then re-installing Firefox. Backing up and then replacing the profile directory once you re-install will save all your bookmarks and plug-ins and everything so you shouldn't lose anything. With this happening and then Facebook thinking Firefox is IE6, and disabling plug-ins not helping, I get the feeling something's screwed up in the core browser and needs to be replaced.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]Hmm. I'm running Firefox 3.0.5 and not seeing anything wrong. If you think it might be a plug-in problem, you could try disabling or uninstalling the plug-in at least temporarily and seeing if that fixes it. Which icons, exactly, are you seeing the problem with, though? (The ones on the front page, on forum thread lists, etc.?) Does it happen with all of the skins, and if not which ones? A screen shot of what it looks like would also be helpful.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]I'm not sure a version of it without the backup vocals exists. There is a piano version of it without any vocals at all floating around on the net but I don't know where it came from.[/color] [center][youtube=God Knows (instrumental)]RjNM9DYjwcs[/youtube][/center]

[color=#4B0082]I'm mainly surprised the game allows those words in the first place. Every version of Scrabble I've ever played doesn't allow slang.[/color]

[color=#4B0082]I went on a YouTube/Nico Nico excursion a couple days ago and turned up some amusing Lucky Star and Clannad videos. Of course, I must share. [youtube=Super Konata World]zdhygTXzMo0[/youtube] Konata meets Super Mario World—this is just utterly crazy and I love it. In fact, it makes me wish there was a hack for Super Mario World to replace all the music tracks with versions like this. There are also Kagami and Tsukasa versions of this same song but the Konata version is definitely the best; you can't beat that electric fan scene. [youtube=Spinzaku (Code Geass) Lucky Star OP]AklJbg4u_i8[/youtube] I managed to get a Lucky Star-related video into Shinmaru's favorites with this. That's a victory in my book. [youtube=Lucky Star Metal Version]PgdceJrhM6I[/youtube] The Lucky Star OP, Motteke! Sailor Fuku, remixed as a metal arrangement. It's pretty epic. [youtube=Dango Daikazoku - Rock Version]g1z7CyPFtq0[/youtube] The Clannad OP, Dango Daikazoku, remixed as a rock arrangement. Whereas the above video worked because the lyrics actually kind of fit with the new arrangement, this one works because it's so incredibly opposite the original.[/color]
