1. Rima-centric episode for 40, yay! She's become my favorite character (and not only because her hair is, like, half her body mass). I love the way she's usually quiet and doesn't give a crap about stuff, but then also teases Amu—the blowing in the ear thing to freak her out is especially hilarious. I'm getting a bit impatient to see what's going to happen with Dia, though. It's been weeks since she was introduced but things are only just now starting to move. And, on that note, I love Utau's BLACK DIAMOND insert song. I got the single for it and have been listening to it a lot. I'm listening to it right now.

  4. Nintendo releasing the DS in multiple colors and providing an ergonomic redesign is worse than Sony putting out, like, fifty billion different PS3 SKUs that get obsoleted within months as new models are released at the same price? Wut? Also, the point of most console redesigns, like the PS2 Slim, is to save on manufacturing costs, not to try and get people to re-buy them. And here's an interesting interview with Satoru Iwata. It includes some questions about the MotionPlus that are relevant to the discussion:
BIZ: Regarding the new Wii MotionPlus attachment for the remote, where did the idea come from and how long has it been in the works? Iwata: The idea [for Wii MotionPlus] is something we've been contemplating for quite a long time. My understanding about the timing, the reason we are announcing this kind of attachment right now, is because we have come to the stage where we can purchase a significant amount of the gyroscope technology at a reasonable price point, and the stability of this kind of technology itself has been confirmed, so that's why we're making this announcement today. BIZ: Is this kind of functionality what Nintendo really wanted to launch the Wii with from the get go, and now you're finally realizing that complete design? Iwata: As a matter of fact, this kind of design was first conceived only after the initial Wii Remote design had been completed. And of course, as Wii Sports has already proved in the marketplace, the Wii Remote itself is pretty interesting [to consumers]. But as we came up with a great idea like Wii Sports, every other software producer and creator started to think about something more. That's the reason why internally they started to demand that some more technology be brought to the Wii Remote.
5. That's Kagami cosplaying as Hatsune Miku so, if there is any singing, it would likely be done by Katou Emiri (Kagami's voice actress). Which I also think would be pretty awesome—insert song gogogo!
  6. Lucky Star OAV art I just discovered this page on the official Lucky Star site and started geeking out big time. It seems the OAV is going to be full of more win than I could have ever imagined. The release date is September 26th. It's so close yet seems so very far away.
  7. The MotionPlus attachment has a pass-through port that allows the Nunchuk to also be plugged in, so no worries there. During the E3 press conference Reggie was using both for the jet ski game in Wii Sports Resort.
  8. Hah, yes, I think I do know the scene you're talking about. I considered posting it in there as well but I didn't get around to it. So very much innuendo, yet Haruka is so very clueless. :animeswea
  9. That was my first thought when I read about this, too, but there could also be a decent reason for it not being included in the remote when the Wii launched. (Nearly two years is a long time for technology to change and become more affordable.) So I'm trying not to jump on the, "Nintendo is just trying to suck more money out of us," bandwagon too fast. I save that for crap like the Wii Zapper.

There are plenty of references scattered around, some obvious and others that are more subtle. It's gotten better with every episode so far and turned into one of my favorites of the season.

  15. Going by system, I think I'm going to have to list two favorites for most or else it would turn into a list of Zelda games... NES The Legend of Zelda is definitely my first pick on the NES. It's not as good as some of the later Zeldas but its gameplay has still held up incredibly well. It also remains the hardest Zelda game, other than Zelda II which I will never bother playing again. When I manage to slaughter an entire room of blue Darknuts, dodging fireballs all the while, without getting hit it's just so damn satisfying. Super Mario Bros. 3 also deserves a mention here. After LoZ, it's the game I played most on the NES and it's actually held up better against later games than Zelda did. Super NES My favorite game of all time, Zelda: A Link to the Past, resides on this system. It's by far the best 2D Zelda, featuring the best in level design, bosses, and difficulty of the entire series. I've played LttP a dozen times and I never get tired of it. My second favorite game ever, Super Metroid, is also on the SNES?in fact, a lot of my top favorites are. It has such an incredible amount of depth in its physics and play control that there's always new tricks to be learned and honed. And the open-ended level design allows for some crazy awesome sequence breaking. PlayStation Chrono Cross takes the cake here because it has one of the most fun, turn-based battle systems I've played (even if it was pretty easy), it has a very weird and interesting story. The way it tied into Chrono Trigger was odd and not at all what I was expecting. Nintendo 64 I've criticized Zelda: Ocarina of Time a fair bit when comparing it to later 3D Zeldas but, while I do think it's overrated, OoT is still a great game. Even if other parts haven't aged so well, its dungeon designs remain top-notch. Super Mario 64 is a very close second on the N64; I borrowed my friend's copy of it many times, then got Super Mario 64 DS, then finally got it on the Wii Virtual Console when the DS version's control turned out to be less-than-great. It's one of those games I can pick up and play anytime and have fun with. Game Boy Color Yes, yet another Zelda game, Zelda: Link's Awakening DX comes out on top for the GB/GBC. LA tried very hard to match the depth of LttP and it came very close to it, which is incredible for an original Game Boy game competing with a SNES game. The item combos you could do (bomb arrows!) added a lot of fun and new types of puzzles to the game. Pokémon Yellow comes in second because it was my first Pokémon game and I'll never forget its magic. Game Boy Advance Metroid: Zero Mission (holy crap, it's not a Zelda game!) was better than I ever expected and really impressed me. It improved the original Metroid so much that you had to be really familiar with its level design to tell that Zero Mission was a remake and not a whole new game. It still doesn't quite match up to Super Metroid but it comes very close. GameCube If you own a GCN and call yourself a Zelda fan but haven't played Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, you should slap yourself right here and now. Even in single player mode this is the best 2D Zelda since LttP. Its level design is great, the puzzles are very creative, the combat is amazing, and, if you can manage to get some GBAs hooked up, multiplayer is an absolute blast. I played through the game four times in a row when I first bought it, once in multiplayer mode with friends and three times in single player mode. I'm going to skip Zelda: The Wind Waker because listing two Zelda games for the GCN would just be silly. F-Zero GX is another under-appreciated gem on the GCN that I played a lot. It's by far the best F-Zero game out there, due in no small part to its absolutely perfect play control and well designed tracks. It's got a fairly steep learning curve but, once you get used to how sensitive the controls are, drifting and sliding through the twists and turns of the tracks feels incredible. Nintendo DS I haven't actually played the DS version yet but I expect Final Fantasy IV will claim the top spot as soon as I can get my hands on it. I love both the SNES and GBA versions of FFIV and the only reason I didn't list FFIV Advance under the GBA is because this version looks even better. I haven't played Mario Kart Wii yet so Mario Kart DS remains my favorite in the series. It's standard Mario Kart but with improvements over all the previous games?what else is there to say? I expect the Chrono Trigger remake will displace MKDS when it's released. It's another game that didn't quite make it into my SNES picks. Wii I didn't bother listing SSB or SSBM because Super Smash Bros. Brawl has surpassed them. It does have a few annoyances (tripping, anyone?) but, overall, I like it more than the first two. I'm not big on fighters but the easy-to-play, crazy-hard-to-master style, along with the freedom of movement during fights, really drew me into the Smash Bros. games. And the thing I like most about SSBB is the online play; even as flawed as it is, it still lets me beat down Shinmaru. Zelda: Twilight Princess took the best parts of OoT, MM, and TWW and wrapped them up into one game, creating what I believe is the best 3D Zelda game yet.

From what I've heard, the 360 port will be handled by a different team. So I doubt it will affect the PS3 version at all.
See, the thing is when has Square ever done a multiplatform release on any of its titles? I can't recall anything. I believe that if they had invested their resources solely in the PS3, they could have really hit the mark and put down a very impressive title because of the capabilities Blu-Ray discs offer. Not saying that people won't be happy with the 360 version or that it will be scaled back or anything, I just believe if they stuck with one platform, they could really reached a high level with this title. I guess time will tell the story for lucky number 13. And as for the Wii......
Is swapping discs really that bad? Because the only advantage Blu-ray has over DVD is capacity. Also, I'd rather play a version of FFXIII on the Wii that isn't quite as pretty than have to shell out [strike]$599 US Dollars[/strike] $399 for a whole new system. It's highly unlikely that the actual gameplay would be affected by the lower system specs, they'd just have to lower some graphics settings. Of course, it would be unlikely that I'd bother with FFXIII in the first place since I've yet to even play FFXII. But whatever.

    From Nintendo.com:
On Nov. 16, Animal Crossing®: City Folk lets players move into a fun community populated by quirky animals. Players can improve their community, chat with the locals or just spend the day fishing and collecting fossils. There is also the opportunity to catch a bus into the new urban city area. Though you’ll never see other players in the city, you can connect with them in new ways using WiiConnect24, such as bidding on your friends’ items at the auction house or visiting the Happy Room Academy headquarters to see the top-rated player house. Another new feature in Animal Crossing®: City Folk is the ability to visit friends’ towns and chat with one another using the new WiiSpeak microphone. The WiiSpeak microphone is sold separately at an MSRP of $29.99 and allows Internet voice chat among Wii Friends – not just from person to person but from room to room.
Yay for a release date. But, well, screw the mic—I'm not paying $30 extra just for voice chat, provided I buy ACCF at all. Also, N-Sider has a full picture of the mic and it does use a USB port.
  23. Indeed, this was announced yesterday, before Nintendo's press conference. And I also think it holds enough potential discussion (what games we'd like to see use this, for example) to warrant its own thread.

I managed to catch a live streaming video of Nintendo's press conference. Here's some highlights: Wii Speak Finally, they're releasing a microphone for the Wii. What's interesting, though, is that it sits up by the sensor bar and apparently picks up voices from the whole room. First, I'm wondering how well that's going to work, and second, is it going to take up another USB port? It should be pretty cool if it works well (and games actually use it) since it doesn't require a headset. It sounded like it would be launching and included with Animal Crossing: City Folk. Animal Crossing: City Folk They showed off the new AC for Wii, as expected. In addition to your village you can now visit the city, which has various shops like the hair stylist (who can let you use your Mii's face), Gracie's, an auction house where you can buy and sell items (from/to other people?), and a Happy Room Academy office where you can see other people's furniture setups, presumably streamed to you in the same way that you can get replays and stages in SSBB. It uses the aforementioned Wii Speak mic for voice chat when visiting friends so no more annoying typing to communicate. And mail will be able to be sent to people's Wii bulletin boards or even e-mail addresses. Other than that, it looked like classic Animal Crossing. So I really hope they've added more than the few bits they showed off today, since it wasn't really all that much. I enjoyed the first two games but I'm not sure a third would be worth it without more new features. Wii Sports Resort This will use and come with the new MotionPlus accessory. The activities they showed were frisbee throwing, jet skiing, and sword dueling (with shinai, of course, not real swords). The movements did indeed look very accurate, especially with the sword movement. I doubt I'll buy the game itself (unless it's not much more than a MotionPlus by itself) but I can't wait to see this sort of 1:1 movement used in other games—I'm looking at you, Zelda. Snowboarding with the Balance Board I didn't catch the title of this but it looked kind of cool. Maybe there will be some decent uses for the Balance Board other than Wii Fit after all. Wii Music If Guitar Hero and Rock Band attract casual players, this must be aimed at the ultra-casual crowd. Everything was extremely simplistic with no feedback whatsoever about how well you play. The drums did look like they was done fairly well, though, using the Balance Board for the foot pedals and the remote and nunchuck at different points in space to hit the various drums and cymbals. They had a professional drummer there to show it off and he could play it pretty well. Yeah, kind of disappointing. The MotionPlus accessory looks incredibly cool but Wii Sports Resort seemed to be the only game using it.
